Why is folding so important(and awesome)?

Ponder this:

Now ponder this:

• An error caught in the bindery is the most expensive error you can make

• Folding, done right, is a powerful way to communicate a message

• It’s dimensional, and always a surprise

• There are many, many more options than you think

Broadside folds vs. Short folds

Automated vs. Semi-automated vs. Hand folding

• Automated or mechanical folding is done entirely by machine

Semi automated folding is done partially by machine

Folding 101: Folding Lingo

• Semi-automated folding is done partially by machine, partially by hand

• Hand folding is the solution when a fold is too difficult to produce by machine, difficult and small quantity, or if required finishing equipment is not at the facility

• Almost all folding styles can be automated if the quantity is high enough

What is folding compensation, and why should you care?

Paper is dimensional, and for one panel to fold into another,

Folding 101: Folding Compensation

the fold-in panel must be slightly shorter

7

Folding compensation – general guidelines

• Single sheet compensation averages 3/32'' (+/- 1/32)

• Double sheet compensation averages 1/8 – 3/16''

Folding 101: Folding Compensation

• Ask your printer for a diagram, or use a template for best results

Folding 101: Folding Compensation

Guidelines for file setup

• DON’T float your layout on a larger sheet with crop marks – build your file to trim size

DON’T send two files one for side A one for side B• DON’T send two files, one for side A, one for side B –send one, two page file (or one page if one-sided)

• DON’T work backwards – get the file right at the start, rather than planning to go back and fix it later

• DON’T expect your printer to fix your file for you –that’s not cool (and you’re handing over control)

Folding 101: Folding Compensation

Do you really want to give up control?

Folding 101: Folding and Paper

Understanding grain direction and folding

• A fold with the grain offers good dimensional stability

• A fold against the grain has greater potential for i / t ti d t l fl t f ldexpansion/contraction, does not lay as flat as a fold

made with the grain, and can cause cracking

• Not every fold can be with the grain, but your printer will try to make the most critical folds with the grain

• If you must fold against the grain, scoring can help

Folding 101: Folding and Paper

When should you consider scoring?

• First of all, what is scoring?

• In what situations is scoring recommended?

• Is there only one way to score?

• Is scoring expensive?

Folding 101: Folding and Paper

Choose wisely when it comes to paper

• Keep your audience and end use in mind

• When in doubt, order a paper dummy

• Is it going in the mail? Consider size, weight, auto insertion, and envelopes

• On a tight budget? Ask for a “house” sheet or a recommendation

Other notable design issues

• Beware of color breaks and heavy ink coverageat the fold

Pay attention to your proofs• Pay attention to your proofs

• Investigate first, sell second

• Make friends with your printer, your postal service, keep the dialogue open
