1995 I took a trip to Comdex in U.S. – Largest computer tradeshow in the world

It was .com everything.

In 1995 I started a ISP to ride the new tech wave

In 1998 I gave a presentation about the future of the Internet

My talk centred around the Clicks and Mortar revolution and how ecommerce would change business

At the end of the presentation I was told by several attendees that …

The Cloud What is it?

Page 7: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

The Cloud:

“Services which run over the Internet instead of from your local computer”

Easiest way to remember is The Cloud is “someone else’s problem”.

The Cloud - Definition

Page 8: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

2006 Google's Eric Schmidt's reference to Google services as belonging

"in a cloud somewhere"

The Cloud - Past

Page 9: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

2001

Blogger, programmer Dave Winer may also have a claim for referring to the Internet in a 2001 NYT article as a "cloud" of computers, though an effort by a defunct company called NetCentric to trademark the term in 1997 predates him.

The Cloud - Past

Page 10: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

1996

Meeting of Internet and startup-company executives at Compaq offices in Houston who's imagineering team described:

“the universe being transformed by the Internet as one in which 'cloud-computing' enabled applications would become commonly available via the web.”

The Cloud - Past

IT professionals everywhere draw a fluffy cloud to describe ”The Cloud”.

Great marketing term that succinctly describes what it is and where it is.Some customer quotes:

“I don’t know where my data is but it is in the Cloud somewhere”

“Up there, in the Cloud”

The Cloud

Tim Butler
Need to describe it a bit better

We have see cloud technology evolve rapidly 15 years ago Conetix started hosting using container technology running Virtuozzo Now container technology for hosting is considered the next big thing.. Eg: Docker Google - spins up and down over 2 Billion containers a week

The Cloud – Present and Future

Page 13: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

So the next big thing may not actually be the new.

Big data and data analytics

Always had big data however it maybe about how we use it?

The Cloud – Future

Page 14: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Being sold to councils and town planners. Emergency services

- better response routes.Ipswich City Council

- purchased data to work out where they would put a mountain bike track

Designed as a simple riding and running app

Big Data Example

Page 15: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Coined by Cisco the term “fog” was introduced in 2015.

What Is It?

“The fog extends the cloud to be closer to the things that produce and act on IoT data“

Devices that are powering apps or small applications anywhere

No longer in a data centre or where the perception of where the cloud is or should be.

Is this Beyond the Cloud?

Edge of Cloud

Page 16: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Let’s retake for a second.CloudEdge of CloudPersonal Devices  running apps local and remote cloudFog IoT

All considered to be in “the cloud”

Cloud of Confusion

Page 17: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Fluid Cloud

Moving from local to location and having apps or personal information following

Using container technology to spin up you personal requirements likes etc

where you are in real time.

Targeted Advertising combined with IoT – eg bike tyre pressures

Cloud – What’s Next?

Page 18: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Heavily personalised advertising

Example – Clothing store

Facial recognition and pics accessories to your previous purchase

Gives you ideas based around previous purchases

AI to best determine what else you may purchase

This is already happening!

Cloud – What’s Next?

Page 19: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Cloud – Sharing of Personal DataLocational data - Google makes suggestions based on your interest and location

Finding your car park - Google already displays where you parked.

Fitness Apps – Weight loss

Connected VR – combined with a treadmill to make you fit while you play

Page 20: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Emergency response in health care

Diabetes monitoring – Real time alerts

Crashed car – Auto report of location to emergency responders, family

Older generation living longer in unassisted homes - Details such as household activity, power usage etc to determine health

Cloud – Sharing of Personal Data

Page 21: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Millions of connected devices Fluid movement between Cloud and Fog Personal information spun up and spun down Information shared everywhere

What’s the real big next thing that we should all consider?

Cloud – Sharing of Personal Data

Page 22: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

I believe it is going to be all about

Security Security Security

Cloud – Sharing of Personal Data

Page 23: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

The largest DDoS on record against Dyn DNS Services

21st October 2016 (two weeks ago)

Estimated attack of 1.2 terabits per second

Cloud – Security

Page 24: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Cloud – Security

Page 25: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

The DDoS attack - Compromised Internet of Things devices, including DVRs and webcams

More devices - More interconnectivity with homes, electricity every aspect of our lives

Cloud – Security

Page 26: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

The number of data breaches in past 12 months alone is staggering

- Estimated 30,000 websites are hacked each day – Forbes

- 78% were WordPress websites not updated.

Cloud – Security

Page 27: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security

In February, hackers threatened to, and ultimately did, dump the records of nearly 30,000 FBI and Department of Homeland Security workers.

Seagate

Seagate was one of the many victims of a W-2 attack this tax season, with security reporter Krebs reporting in March that the data storage company had been breached of all of its W-2 tax documents.

LinkedIn, MySpace

Within the space of two weeks in May, a hacker called Peace posted data on the dark web to sell, which allegedly included information on 167 million LinkedIn accounts and, in the following week, 360 million emails and passwords for MySpace users.

Cloud – Security

Page 28: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Not all doom and gloom

Hosting software companies like Plesk are building in security for your hosting

CloudFlare – Easy, Automatic DDOS Protection

IoT – Standards are evolving (but not there yet)

Two Factor Authentication – Nearly all major cloud providers support it

- Apple and others setting it as a default rather than an option

Cloud – Security

Page 29: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

Google are forcing the issue - The use of SSL certificates is now an SEO ranking factor to encourage wider use

Cloud – Encryption

Page 30: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

FREE SSL companies like Let’s Encrypt making it simple via a one touch install

New blockchain apps being introduced – decentralised ledger to protect integrity

Cloud – Encryption

Page 31: Beyond the Cloud - Click Digital Expo 2016 - Jamin Andrews

So I guess my take on the next BIG thing and Beyond the Cloud

Personal Data Security

The more we share, the more we need to protect the data

Is YOU and your data security

We have to think.

Go back to basics on what we share, when we share, why we share and how we share information.

A hacker only needs to get it right once
