Eco Fashion Week is pleased to be participating in Banner Bags this year. As more of us become aware of the realities of the environmental damage from the garment and textile industries, initiatives such as Banner Bags offer innovative solutions.

Thank you for taking an interest in our 3rd annual Beyond the Bag Eco-Fashion Showcase. Your contribution will help Banner Bags foster an environmentally conscious mindset for individuals in our community.

In its 6th year of operation, Banner Bags continually educates individuals make informative decisions on repurposing, recycling, and reusing. We started the program solely based on classroom presentations. Here, high school textile students learnt the importance of environmental sustainability and applied their new knowledge to transform ordinary street banners into beautiful handcrafted bags. The success of our education component is recognized with the 2011 Surrey Green City Award and the 2011 Scotiabank and SIFE (now Enactus) Go Green Champion at the Calgary SIFE Regional Exposition, an entrepreneurial exposition promoting volunteer programs that include a triple bottom line approach.

Banner Bags has transformed over the years to go far beyond creating innovative bags. Young fashion design students are encouraged to apply to Banner Bags’ Beyond the Bag Eco-Fashion Showcase. Here, designers are able to create unique, eco-friendly masterpieces through enhanced fashion skills and business knowledge shared by local industry professionals.

In order to expand Banner Bags’ environmental footprint, the Go Green Challenge was introduced in late 2013. This challenge inspires high school students across British Columbia to ‘upcycle’ waste items of no value into items with value.

Your contribution will help impact over 1000 students by allowing them access to necessary materials and other resources to create a greener, more sustainable future. In partnering with Banner Bags, your backing will go a long way to encourage aspiring eco-fashion designers to showcase their innovative and stylish garments to the community.

Enactus is a worldwide organization with over 1,600 university teams applying entrepreneurial practices to programs that create social, environmental, and economic impact in their local and global communities. Each member is an emerging leader striving to create change using business concepts and skills.

At Enactus SFU, our 98 active members are currently managing and supporting five other programs alongside Banner Bags. The Enactus SFU team finds a need, targets the audience that would most benefit, and creates a customizable solution for those we work with. At Enactus SFU, we dare to do.

Interactive workshops for low income single mothers across the Lower Mainland, teaching nutritional meal planning on a limited budget, providing dietary consulting, teaching fitness and instilling financial literacy skills.

Educates youth-at-risk on money management and financial literacy skills through a series of workshops on topics such as goal-setting, budgeting, savings and debt management.

O U R P R O G R A M S

Gears ESL students with video editing skills to create a mini self-documentary of their life, enhance storytelling abilities and increase students’ employability through teaching video skills.

Provides pro-bono consulting services, executing cases and implementations for organizations to positively increase environmental, social, and economic impact in the community.

Assists aspiring entrepreneurs at Simon Fraser University to expand their business ideas and businesses through the Annual Competition and the Jumpstart Accelerator.

At Banner Bags, we educate individuals to adhere to environmental sustainable practices in their everyday lives.

E D U C A T I O N

Through the delivery of seminars at high school textile classrooms across British Columbia, students are taught about the importance of environmental sustainability. Students immediately see the reduction of waste as they apply their new knowledge to repurpose wasted city street banners that would otherwise end up in the landfill. Textile students craft these into beautiful, one-of-a-kind bags.

In order to impact the students this year from the education presentations further, we introduced the Go Green Challenge. The new component of Banner Bags allows schools to upcycle useless products into products with environmental value while taking into consideration our judging criteria to make their projects well rounded and increase the impact. The schools are judged based on creativity, environmental sustainability, human impact, and social media popularity.

I M P A C T

Banner Bags has significantly impacted the Burnaby, Surrey, Langley, Vancouver and Richmond communities and its youth since its debut in 2005. Since then, the program has visited 42 classrooms in over 30 different high schools across the Lower Mainland. As of January 2012, close to 820 banners worth over $37000 have been reused by 1200 students in the program.

Our 3rd annual showcase, which is set for March 16, 2014, aims to support a young generation of aspiring fashion design students from grades 9 - 12 by providing opportunities for them to network with members of the fashion industry and receive scholarship and internship awards.

Showcase finalists will have the opportunity to learn and improve on their business and textile skills. We hope that this mentorship experience will not only inspire the contestants’ work, but will eventually blossom into a network for their future fashion careers.

A B O U T T H E S H O W C A S E

To empower students further, Banner Bags started the Beyond the Bag Eco-Fashion Showcase and workshop series three years ago. This component of the program encourages aspiring fashion designers to turn ordinary street banners into glamorous garments. First, designers participate in a series of seven workshops, which focus on fashion and business concepts led by industry professionals. Garments are then presented in front of a panel of judges at the Beyond the Bag Eco-Fashion Showcase.
