It is our pleasure to welcome you at the 4th Erasmus+ Staff Week in the state of Bremen!

We are convinced that you made a really good choice coming here! As a Free Hanseatic city Bremen offers a unique combination of international metropoli-tan fl air and the laid-back feeling of a small town. We enjoy short distances just as much as large-scale international events. Bremen state hosts over 500,000 inhabitants from whom 30,000 are German and international students from our four universities. From these numbers you can surely see how student life plays a signifi cant role in our city.

Being a maritime trade city, Bremen has historically always valued international cooperation and the same holds true for us, Bremen educational institutions. What we are equally proud of, however, is our inter-institutional partnership in the fi eld of education. The four universities in Bremen cooperate closely on various topics and in numerous projects that extend beyond internal institutional concerns. For example, the international offi ces represent jointly Bremen educational landscape under the label “Universities in Bremen” at the international networking conferen-ces such as EAIE and NAFSA. Furthermore, Bremen‘s public higher education institutions jointly run the “Fremdsprachenzentrum der Hochschulen im Land Bre-men (FZHB)“ or “Foreign Language Centre of the Universities of Bremen”. This is an outstanding example of a highly successful cooperation that allows FZHB to of-fer i.a. language courses in 20 languages and an independent language learning centre providing access to learning material for over 40 languages. Inspired by this fruitful cooperation we have decided to dedicate our 4th Erasmus+ Staff Week to the following topic: “Beyond English: Multilingualism and its Challenges”.

We hope you enjoy the university visits, discussions and presentations to be held during this week as much as we enjoy hearing your thoughts, ideas and experi-ences. Let’s join together in this new intellectual endeavor with the goal to leave Bremen equipped with new knowledge and fresh perspective on multilingualism.

This year, for the fi rst time, we offer two streams: one on the topic of “multilingu-alism” and another as a library stream. Why? The State and University Library Bremen (SuUB) has always been highly interested in an exchange of ideas and practices with its international colleagues. SuUB employees have regularly attended international staff weeks across Euro-pe. During the past staff weeks in Bremen we already hosted librarians from our partner universities. Therefore, it was a logical next step for us to organize an extra stream offering visits, workshops and sessions focused on library-related to-pics. We hope that the colleagues participating in this stream will enjoy the special programme offered for them by SuUB.

UNIVERSITY OF BREMEN

The University of Bremen was founded in 1971. In the course of its relatively short history it has developed into the science center of North West Germany. When it was founded it broke new ground in many ways, earning the label “Bremen Model”. Some of these breakthroughs have now become standard features of modern universities. For instance: interdisciplinarity, research-based learning in projects, and social commitment. With 290 professors and around 19,000 students, the University of Bremen is a mid-sized university offering a large spectrum of subjects; 100 different study programmes organised in 30 academic disciplines. The University of Bremen is committed to the declaration of Bologna, which aims towards the creation of a European university space. It fosters the exchange of students within the frame of international programs and partnerships on all continents of the world. Aspects of internationalisation are taken into account in the development of study programmes; for example, new forms of study (delive-ry of lecture classes in a foreign language, study modules), degree awards like Bachelor and Master, as well as courses of study with an international orientation and stays abroad. For many years now, the University of Bremen has been among the top league of German universities in the area of research. Research conducted at the University of Bremen is interdisciplinary. In other words: Bremen research tran-scends the borders of traditional disciplines and is embedded within six research concentrations, also known as high-profi le areas: Ocean and Climate Research, Materials Science, Information-Cognition-Communication, Social Sciences, Health Science, Logistics. Since June 2012, the University of Bremen is entitled with the label ‘University of Excellence’.

BREMERHAVEN UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES

The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1975 however the educational tradition of the institution can be traced back to more than a hund-red years ago. Its geographical location directly at the estuary of the river Weser and the maritime profi le of its 24 study programmes are just two of the reasons why it is called the „University by the Sea“. The maritime characteristics are refl ected for example in the close cooperati-on with companies within the fi eld of teaching and research. The Master program-mes „Wind Energy Technology” and „Integrated Safety and Security Management” were established in cooperation with regional companies and are good examples of the practically oriented education. The institutes and laboratories of the Bre-merhaven University of Applied Sciences are modernly equipped. Currently, there are around 3100 students studying at the university whose campus is located between the river Geeste and the pedestrian zone situated in the town centre of Bremerhaven - right next to the Alfred Wegener Institute, the Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the German Maritime Museum, the Historical Muse-um, the German Emigration Centre and the Climate House 8° East. Taking part in the contest „Excellent Teaching“, launched by the ‘Stifterver-band für die Deutsche Wissenschaft‘, Bremerhaven University of Applied Scien-ces received an award in 2009 for its concept called “GUUGLE: Gut und gerne Lernen und Lehren” („learn and teach well and with passion“) which is designed to strengthen the teaching approach within the university. In 2013 the university was awarded for its concept “study pioneers”. The project “Everyone on board!” supports prospective students and students from non-academic families through various offers and special courses on their way to a successful career. Furthermore, the Career Service Centre (CSC), a central contact point at the university, provides students with valuable support to fi nd work placements and to start their job careers. The CSC assists students in fi nding current adverts for work placements or for degree thesis projects as well as holi-day jobs or full-time employment. Through personal consultation at the CSC and special trainings regarding the application process, students may improve their professional qualifi cations and get into contact with companies - already during their studies.

Haus der Wissenschaft • Main station to „Haus der Wissenschaft“ > by foot: Go from the main station area in direction “Herdentorsteinweg”, follow this street, you will pass a little bridge before you reach a big crossroad.

• Now please follow the street “Schüssel-korb” for 300 meters. After 300 meters please turn right into “Wilhadistraße”, and then left into “Sandstraße”, after 20 meters you will reach “Haus der Wissenschaft”.

Martinianleger • Main station to “Martinianleger”:Take bus no. 25 direction Weidedamm-Süd. Get off at stop “Martinistraße”. Cross the street and head back 200 meters from where the bus came. Turn right into street “Erste Schlachtpforte”. After 30 meters turn left behind the church “St. Martini” and after another 70 meters you reach the landing pier “Martinianleger”.

• It takes about a 20 minutes walk from the Campus of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, and 5 minutes from the Klimahaus. First follow the same way as to the Klimahaus, then instead of turning to the Klimahaus keep following Columbusstr. along the waterside of the old harbour. The German Emigration Centre (Auswanderer-haus) is on the left side of the Columbus-str. after a crossing with traffi c lights.

Hochschule Bremen • Main station to Campus Neustadtswall:Take bus no. 26 or bus no. 27 direction Bremen Neustadt / Huckelriede or Tram No. 1 direction Bremen Huchting Roland-Center. Get off at stop “Hochschule Bremen”. Turn into street “Neustadtswall”. After 60 meters you have the HSB plaza and the entrance to the AB-Building on your left. The room AB S11 is located on the top-fl oor, please take the elevator, which can be found close to the entrance/information desk.

• Main station to Campus Werderstraße:Take tram no. 6 direction airport and get off at stop “Wilhelm-Kaisen-Brücke”. Turn into street “Werderstraße”, which is parallel to the river. After 300 meters you have HSB Campus Werderstraße on your right.

• Campus Neustadtswall to Campus Werderstraße: Turn left on street “Neustadtswall”, turn left on street “Friedrich-Ebert-Straße”, go straight on “Wilhelm-Kaisen-Brücke”, cross the street and turn right into street “Wer-derstraße”, which is parallel to the river. After 300 meters you have HSB Campus Werderstraße on your right. The ship simulator is located in the B-Building, room B 404 (4th fl oor).

• Main station to “Wohnküche Bremen”:Take bus no. 26 or bus no. 27 direction Bremen Neustadt / Huckelriede or Tram No. 1 direction Bremen Huchting/Roland-Center. Get off at stop “am Brill”. Head towards the bridge and turn right into street “Schlachte”. After 350 meters you have the entrance of the “Wohnküche Bremen” on your right side.

Jacobs University Bremen

• Main station to Jacobs University: Take train towards Vegesack from track no. 5 or no. 6 (both at the same platform), get off at Schönebeck station. Go up the stairs, turn right and walk along Schönebecker Straße, after 150 m turn left into Bruno-Bürgel-Straße.After 200 m: Main gate of Jacobs Univer-sity at the left, ask porters for directions to ICC Conference Room.

• Jacobs University to airport: Leave the main gate, turn right and follow Bruno-Bürgel-Straße, after 200 m reach T-intersection with Schönebecker Straße, turn right, and after 20 m right again into Grohner Mühlenweg > train station is right aheadTake the train towards Verden (Aller) , get off at Bremen Hauptbahnhof (main station), leave through the main entrance (towards the city centre). Go to the station F at the bus and tram station diagonally to your left. Take tram no. 6 towards Flughafen, get off at Bremen Flughafen.
