TYPE OF DOCUMENTARY

This documentary is a mix documentary as it involves interviews, archive material such as Beyonce’s music video, observation such as the Billboard awards and narration.

THEMES

The documentary is about music, the music industry and Beyonce’s music and personal life. The narrative structure open up on Beyonce and what she actually is. It portrays her childhood and the successful woman that she has became. The narrative structure also conveys her decision on leaving her dad music label and to be herself and becoming independent. Moving on to the middle of the documentary, it portrays how Beyonce is doing after she has left her father’s music label. It portrays Beyonce’s issues with the music industry and how she has over come it. Within the middle of the documentary, Beyonce also reveals her miscarriage and how music has helped her go through such a difficult time. The documentary then ends with how Beyonce has moved on and how she got back up to her feet and doing what she love the most. It also reveals Beyonce becoming pregnant again and introduces us to her Baby, Blue Ivy.

CAMERA ANGLES

Within this documentary, there are some simple camera angles that were used. For example, high angle shot was used when portraying Beyonce, this was done to portray a powerful and significant impression towards her. High angle shot was also used in archive material of the Billboard Awards to shot how full the place and the concert was. This represents how important and how successful Beyonce was. There was also a long shot when portraying Beyonce’s house at the very beginning of the documentary, while portraying this, slow motion was also used to portray and enhance the importance of the place. Panning shot was also used to portray her house, to convey a journey. Throughout the interview, middle close up was used to portray their body language. Close up was also used to enhance the interviewee’s facial expression and emotion. Close up and foreground focus was also used when portraying Beyonce writing a song, this conveys how important this part of Beyonce’s life is. Long shot and panning shot was used when portraying Beyonce’s fans queuing up to get into the event, this implies how her fans are dedicated and how popular Beyonce is. Long shot was also used when Beyonce was in a meeting, this allows everyone to be on the screen which create an impression that she is focus and determined and it gives us an insight on what she has to do to become succesful.

MISE EN SCENE

Within the documentary the mise en scene was set in awards, music videos, music industries, private home, on vacation and on set with Beyonce. This documentary reflects on Beyonce’s and what is happening. It portrays exactly what she has to do in order to be successful and how she deals with the troubles that she has faced. Mise en scene within this documentary is relevant as it reflects on the music business. For example when portraying Beyonce in rehersal, it shows equipment as microphones, instruments mirrors etc. It is also relevant when interview was being portrayed, the background was in Beyonce’s house and it conveys what she really is behind the music. Mise en scene was also relevant on Beyonce’s private life such as when she was in vacation. Mise en scene was also relevant when portraying Beyonce’s personal videos that she has taken; it portrays where she is exactly and what she is doing.

SOUND

There was diagetic and non diagetic music throughout the documentary. Diagetic sound such as narration was used throughout of Beyonce’s voice, this was relevant as the documentary is all about Beyonce. This also allows us to know what exactly is going on and what she is feeling. Diagetic music such as the concerts, radio and beyonce singing was also used. These diagetic sound was relevant as it is all about music.

Non diagetic sound such as soft piano playing or violin was used throughout the video, specially when Beyonce is speaking as a narration, this creates an atmosphere and compliments her emotion and what she is saying. Her music is also being played on the background when portraying rehearsal. This is relevant as the song on the background is Beyonce’s and it reflects to what is portraying on to the screen.

EDITING

Within this video simple editing technique was used. For example on the interview, slow motion zoom was used. This enhances the emotion of the interviewee and to also compliments what they are saying, specially when Beyonce is talking about a difficult period of her life. Simple cuts was also used when moving on to next scene and part of the documentary.

GRAPHICS

Within this documentary simple graphics were used. For example at the very beginning of the documentary, it used texts to portray who the creators of the documentary as and to also portrays the title of the documentary. The fonts that were used were simple and an appropriate size, which enables to give out a simplicity impression. The font was also in white to make it stand out from the clip that was portrayed on the background.

ARCHIVE

Within this documentary, many archive materials were used such as music awards ( Billboard award and MTV award ), personal videos that Beyonce filmed her self using laptop, video camera and mobile phone. This involves footage of her on vocation, at hotels, at music meetings etc. This was relevant as it shows evidence of what exactly she has to do to become successful. Archive materials such as childhood videos was also used to show Beyonce in her childhood. Archive materials such as her concert in Atlanta was also used in this documentary to give insights on her music life and her tour life. Archive materials such sonograms was also used when Beyonce was talking about her baby. This is relevant as it gives evidence to the narration.
