From everyone at Bexhill AcademyMerry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Bexhill Beacon Bexhill Beacon

As 2018 draws to a close, we can all reflect on another fabulous year at Bexhill Academy. We

pride ourselves on pursuing our key aims in all that we do, students remaining focussed, aspirational, becoming more independent learners and recognising the value of resilience.

In November we saw our Class of 2018 for the final time. Students from our old Year 11 came in to collect their exam

certificates that they had worked so deservedly for. They talked of courses that they had started and how important it was to maintain focus and to be resilient in the face of even more challenging Post 16 Courses at college. The term also gave us an incredibly memorable 100 year anniversary of the end of World War One. Our traditional “Bugle on the Balcony” of the Last Post is both haunting and beautiful. We take pride as our student body stand

in silence and remember the sacrifices that were made.

With successes in both sport and academia across the county, we are becoming renowned as the school to beat. Our numerous table tennis and rugby teams have been out and about representing the Academy and upholding our motto, “Be Remarkable”. We are also delighted that three of our current Year 11 students have won scholarships to Eastbourne College; an incredible achievement.

And finally, we have been fortunate this school year to welcome our new Head of Music, Mr Lewis, who has put musical performances at the forefront of his work. To date students have performed at the local church, the De La Warr Pavilion and this week in the Christmas Concert. This was a delightful event, with the new Contemporary Orchestra and ensembles from the GCSE and BTEC groups in Years 9 and 10, and soloists including violinists, pianists and singers. The evening finished with a standing ovation. What a super and fitting end to the year!

I hope that you have a fabulous Christmas and I look forward to welcoming you back on Thursday 3rd January 2019.

Students’ VoiceHead Students’ Report - Term 2

This term our Year 11s were thrown into a full term of revision, mocks and UCAS college

applications.

The mocks were a great chance to show off their skills and identify key areas for improvement. Whilst it was challenging, it was a great opportunity for the Year 11 students to get used to the layout of GCSE exams, which they will be facing come May and July.

As a school, students and staff, all took part in a 2 minute silence in remembrance of those who fought for our country in previous wars. Year 7s also paid a visit to St Stephen’s Church to show their respects and partake in a Remembrance Service.

Within this term there have been several sporting successes – huge congratulations to Hope Sankey, who came first in this year’s cross country. In addition, the Year 10 and Year 7 football teams remain undefeated and they look to progress into the semi-finals. Our school badminton team recently had varying levels of success as the girls’ doubles reach the final and narrowly came second. Towards the end of the term Year 11 watched a road safety production by Box Clever Theatre. It demonstrated the need for concentration as both a passenger and a driver. This opportunity was enjoyed by all and made students aware of how their actions can affect what happens on the roads. Thank you to the staff at Box Clever Theatre who put on the show for us. More recently, in the build up to Christmas, our senior student leaders and ambassadors took part in the festivities, decorating Christmas trees. Our Christmas PTA quiz was very popular – a massive thank you to all who took part. Now, in the run up to Christmas, we are looking forward to our annual Christmas show and our well-deserved break! We wish everyone a brilliant Christmas, and we will see you in the New Year!

Remembrance Service – Friday 9th November

It was with great honour that Music and Drama students commemorated and remembered all those fallen in the 1st World War, and other conflicts, in our annual Remembrance Service at St Stephen’s

Church in early November. Our students were exceptional in their presentation and demeanour throughout. They performed exceptionally and gave the congregation (of our Y7 students and the general public) a thoroughly thoughtful and experience to remember. A wide range of performances were delivered with true style. Special mention must go to soloists, readers, vocal ensemble, contemporary orchestra and drama club for their wonderful performances. For many, this was the first opportunity to perform. Thank you all to all involved, students and staff. Mr. Lewis (Head of Music)

Report by Anvita Kopparthi (Y8) – Vocal Ensemble MemberRehearsalsOur day started with rehearsals when the vocal ensemble, contemporary orchestra, drama club, readers and musician soloists all arrived at St. Stephen’s Church to prepare for the service.

First the vocal ensemble practised the song ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth’ by Jill Jackson and Sy Miller (a song about the world being peaceful with no wars), as well as practising getting up professionally which included walking down and assembling ourselves in orderly rows. Then came the turn of the readers, soloists and musicians, who also rehearsed their partc and worked out where they sat and how to present themselves.

After that, the Drama Club rehearsed their performance called ‘We Will Remember Them’, which told the sad story of a family who had lost their father to the war. Next, the vocal ensemble practised ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ by Bob Dylan (a song that seems quite jolly at first but has a serious political meaning – it is a protest of sorts against people who keep fighting amongst themselves without seeing the bigger picture).

Then the Contemporary Orchestra rehearsed their song with all of the musicians playing at the correct times and practising when and where to come on and sit back down. In between rehearsals, we had lunch and amused ourselves with quiet activities such as reading or learning parts! We also had the moment of silence at 11am for all those fallen in war.

Before we knew it, it was time to take our places and Year 7 also came in to join us along with parents and the public.

The ServiceThe service started at 2pm with an introduction given by Mr Lewis and the Rev. Renee Durndelle, in which they spoke

about remembrance and why we remember those who had fallen to

give us our freedom.

The first performance was given by the Vocal Ensemble with ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth’. The Vocal Ensemble sung the whole song through first

and the congregation, as well as Year 7, were invited to sing along for the second time round.

After that, a reading called ‘Four Years’ War’ was read out and gave a background of the war, again highlighting the importance of Remembrance Day.

The second performance was that of a skilfully executed solo performance of ‘Nights in White Satin’ by Logan Streets-Mcleod.

Yunus Eshekh-Alonso then took to the stage with a well-played solo violin performance with ‘Minuet 1&2’

by JS Bach.

Then came ‘Why Do We Wear Poppies?’ (two separate readings). These readings gave us some history on why poppies were so symbolic of WW1

and why we wear them to honour the soldiers that died in battle.

Bexhill Beacon Bexhill Beacon

The third musical performance so far was given by the Vocal Ensemble. We performed ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’. The song carried a really strong message – it isn’t right to fight and there shouldn’t be suffering because of war.

Another great solo performance came next by Yunus – a piece called ‘Long Long Ago’ by TH Bayly.

The Drama Club’s turn was next with their touching performance of ‘We Will Remember Them’. It ended with a beautiful monologue and had many people in the congregation in tears.

Following this, a wonderful poem by a student in Year 8 was read out which outlined war and motives.

Next came the stunning vocal performance of ‘Vieni, Vieni O Mio Diletto’ – a beautiful Italian operatic piece performed by Maya Godlonton-White in Year 9. It spoke of a wife calling out for her husband to come home from war.

Finally, to end on a powerful note (so to speak), the Contemporary Orchestra gave an amazing performance of ‘Run’ by Snow Patrol. It was really impressive.

The service ended with some final prayers where everyone had the opportunity to reflect and remember those who had lost their lives defending

our country and our freedom.

Academy Music

As ever, the Christmas term is extremely busy for the music department!

We have hosted and been involved in a variety of successful concerts. All of us in the music department are incredibly proud and impressed with our student performers at these events, as they have put in an exceptional amount of rehearsals and effort to produce such successful performances. Well done to all involved! Watch this space for details about upcoming concerts and events…

Secondary Schools’ ‘Big Sing’3rd December

Bexhill Academy Vocal Ensemble had the privilege to perform as part of a large

ensemble of vocalists from three other local secondary schools at the De La Warr Pavilion.

After a workshop from Lee Reynolds (from Glyndebourne) all three schools got together in an informal concert to experience singing together. The ‘Mad

Moon’ song in particular was a hit and great fun! Bexhill Academy Vocal Ensemble had the opportunity to take to the stage to perform their beautiful rendition of ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ (Bob Dylan) and the premiere of the 4 Chords (A Choral Medley). A huge success! The 4 Chords Medley featured 28 popular hits all together in less than 4 minutes – no mean feat to learn so many words and melodies. It was a huge hit with the audience and other secondary schools, they really watched in awe of your performance – congratulations!

Bexhill School’s Concert – 6th DecemberBoth our Contemporary Orchestra and Vocal Ensemble attended and performed at the Bexhill School’s Concert at the De La Warr Pavilion alongside some of our local primary schools. It was a wonderful event where, again, our students performed with exceptional professionalism and musicality. The contemporary orchestra made their debut at the theatre performing their rendition of ‘Run’ (Snow Patrol) and a traditional German song – ‘In Dulci Jubilo’. What a challenge this piece is to play as it features very quick chord changes and speeds up over time. It was handled by our talented Contemporary Orchestra with ease and the audience greatly appreciated the performances. Our Vocal Ensemble got to experience singing as part of a very large ensemble again, this time supporting the primary school choirs with several festive songs and carols. Great fun was had by all! They had the opportunity to showcase their 4 Chords (A Choral Medley) and Blowin’ in the Wind again – expertly demonstrating to primary school students the standard and progression of singing into secondary school. After the performance, many younger students were visibly and audibly excited about moving to secondary school to continue making exceptional musical progress. Well done to all involved – a busy week of performances but your standards were incredibly high throughout!

The Christmas Concert 2018Congratulations and well done to all those involved in our highly successful Christmas Concert! It was a wonderful evening of entertainment which was full of a variety of musical acts which were all expertly performed with professionalism! Acts features incredible solos on a variety of instruments, to bands and our vocal ensemble and contemporary orchestra. All performances were professionally and musically delivered. The Y9 and Y10 class

ensembles wowed the audience with their ensemble skills and the finale of ‘Purple Rain’ was a huge hit! The audience were on their feet! In fact, the audience were highly appreciative throughout and looking forward to our next concert! A huge thank you to all those who were involved and for all the hard work and support from our staff who helped to make the evening so successful. We look forward to welcoming you all back to concerts in the near future.

Finally, we wish you all a very happy Christmas and a musical new year from all in the music department!

This year students in Cambridge House at Bexhill Academy

chose the Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance service as their House

Charity.

Students raised money by holding a variety of fund raising activities: tutor fairs, a football tournament, cake sales,

sponsored silences and many other events. Staff also got involved and Mr Brazier: Cambridge House’s Pastoral manager made the ultimate sacrifice and shaved off his beard after raising a magnificent £100 pounds for this worthy cause.

In total a wonderful £871 was raised for the Charity and delighted representative Colin Kelvey attended Academy on the 28th November to collect the Big Cheque. He congratulated the students on their fantastic efforts, explaining that over 2000 potentially lifesaving missions have flown this year.

Pictured are students from the Cambridge House with Pastoral Manager Edward Brazier, Head of House Mrs Beth Andrews-Dawson and Colin Kelvey representing Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance.

Appeal for assistance dogs for the blind and partially sighted: mufti day and sponsored walk blasts through

£1500 target raising £2055.69 In one day

Students at Bexhill Academy recently raised money for the Guide and Assistance Dogs Charity with a multitude of activities.

Many students joined in the mufti day and enjoyed re-cycling their toys and games at the stalls which operated during break and lunchtime.

In the afternoon a sponsored walk took place and students and staff alike participated and completed the challenge; using a route planned around the Academy fields.

Academy Associate Principal Vicky Norris-Wright stated “It was wonderful to see the community working together and the attitude of the students and support of staff was truly outstanding throughout.” When the final amounts collected were added up they came to an amazing £2055 and students were able to vote to name one of the Charity’s puppies: “Gizmo”.

On the 8th of November, Battle Abbey School opened its doors to a selection of Year Eleven students from across the county who

wished to learn more about the variety of subjects on offer to them whilst also being able to look around the historic site on which the school is located. The event showcased many aspects of the school and the educational opportunities within.

Walking in, we were immediately greeted by an older student who helped us sign in before giving us a tour of the academic site. Beginning in the state-of-the-art science labs, we were led around the building, getting the chance to have a taster of each subject on offer. The teachers each stressed the positives of picking certain subjects whilst the students gave a more realistic viewpoint.

At the end of the evening we attended a talk given by Headmaster Mr. David Clark who emphasised the school’s community values, then four Battle Abbey students also provided their outlook on attending the college. Afterwards, Mr. Clark invited parents and students to ask any further questions .

Over the previous years, Battle Abbey School has generously granted one full scholarship and two half scholarships to the students of Bexhill Academy, providing them the chance to attend the school without the financial burden they might otherwise face. This year is no different.

Eastbourne College offers a fantastic opportunity for scholarship in both sports and academics. I was

lucky enough to be chosen for the assessment day after applying with my reference from the Head Teacher.

A warm welcome from friendly staff met me as I entered the college with Eastbourne students who acted as guides.

After meeting up with the rest of the potential scholars, I sat my exams. These were academic and related to the specific scholarship I applied for. On another day the sports scholarships had their exams. Once the exams were done, there followed a tour of the campus to view the wonderful facilities and meet some scholars in the current Sixth Form. These students were willing to answer any questions and gave me a picture of life within Eastbourne College.

After a fully catered lunch, I then had two interviews. One was with the head teacher, another with the Head of Chemistry. Here I got to talk about my hobbies and talents both in and out of school. This offered the chance to really show why I should be chosen for the scholarship.

This was an amazing opportunity to not only get into a fantastic college, but also experience what a potential interview day would be like for a job or college.

Our three teams were faced with playing matches against teams from St Leonards Academy, Claverham, William Parker, Buckswood, Helenswood and St Richards.

Our girls’ team won four out of their five matches and finished in second place overall, just behind St Leonards Academy.

Our two boys’ teams both won their group without losing a match and faced each other in an ‘All Bexhill Academy’ final. At the end of a dramatic match our ‘A’ Team ran out 3-1 winners against a ‘B’ Team that pushed them all the way.

All three teams performed extremely well as we managed to retain our under 16 boys’ district title despite fielding a team of mainly Year 9 students.

Bexhill Academy’s under 13 table tennis teams followed in the footsteps of their under 16 counter-parts by achieving very successful results at last

night’s district competition.

In the girls’ competition Bexhill Academy won two and drew one of their matches ,which led to our team being named Joint District Champions with Claverham.

Our two boys’ teams missed out on meeting in the final by one single game, with our ‘B’ Team finishing second in their group, behind St Leonards ‘A’ despite a 2-2 draw between the teams.

Our ‘A’ Team comfortably won their group and faced St Leonards ‘A’ in the final. After a closely fought match, Bexhill Academy finally triumphed 3-1 to win their second district title in two days after the success of our under 16 team on Wednesday. The ‘B’ team finished a very creditable joint 3rd after a 2-2 draw with St Richards in the 3rd and 4th place play off.

Both the boys’ ‘A’ team and the girls’ team will join our under 16 boys’ side in the regional table tennis finals, to be held at Willingdon School in December.

NETBALL

Staff v Student: Report by Lillie and Rosie Wright, Year 10.

C1 and C7 decided to come together to organise an event for charity.

To try and do something different, we decided to organise an event that we could get all the school involved in! We decided we would play a teacher v student netball game. We had both our Year 10 and 9 netball team wanting to take on the teachers and a group of teachers that were very up for playing.

In the first quarter the Year 9s played first and it was very close, finishing at 1-1. Considering that we thought we were going to win easily, we started to get a little worried. Then in the second quarter it was time for our Year 10s to come on and try and get a better lead. They succeeded and within a few minutes, we were 3-1 up.

We were happy with this lead and going into the third quarter (when our Year 9s came on) it was game over, the girls scored a further 5 goals to make it 8-1. The changes to the staff team only hindered their performance and one English teacher in particular should stick to teaching English! In the last quarter when we (Year 10) came back on it was already over but the staff team did manage to get another goal with the score finishing 10-2.

Everyone had a great time and the staff have challenged us to a rematch, once they have

had some training!

ACROBATICS

On Saturday 1st December students competed at

the Sussex Schools’ Sports Acrobatics Competition.

They worked extremely hard, especially considering for the majority of them it was their first ever competition.

We arrived at 8.30am to register, plait everyone’s hair and warm up and then the competition started.

It was a long day for the students as it continued on until 4.30pm but they were all really supportive of each other and showed great team spirit. The novice and advanced large compositional groups both received bronze medals, and Evie and Mya just missed out on a medal by 0.1 in category of 17 pairs.

Well done to all who took part. Miss Baker

Annette from Chartwells Catering emailed out a challenge to all forms to create a poster/

poem around the theme of recycling and as always, Oxford 8 love a challenge.

We discussed different ideas and several form members volunteered to write a poem, we also decided to create a recycling bin out of the rubbish taken from the students in the heart space. The collecting of rubbish only took one break time, and there was more than enough to produce our poster. All of Oxford 8 got involved, from cutting up empty bags and wrappers to working out how to create the collage. It was a real team effort over several form times and a lovely first competition to include our new 7s in, they were really keen and this project helped them talk to lots of their peers in form and settle in as valuable new members of Oxford 8.

Ruby wrote about the experience:

‘On Mondays I attend gym club. We recently had a competition. Our advanced group and novice group came third. It was really good fun and we all enjoyed it.’

Natalie Seddon has also spoken about her role in pantomime this year.

‘I auditioned for Cinderella and got a part as a villager. I will be dancing, singing, acting and speaking. Every Monday and Sunday I attend rehearsals in Battle. The company I am performing with are all nice and very good performers. I have made great memories and I want to do it again next year!’

Lastly, a big thank you to Claire Lear for designing the Yale Christmas cards.

Did you know? It has been proven that children who do not attend school

regularly are more likely to: Fall behind in their school work Find it difficult to make and keep friends Be unhappy at school Misbehave so others cannot see that they are finding the work difficult Get into bad routines that can affect them getting or keeping a job later in life

IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY PROCEDURES Good attendance at school is linked to academic success, we are therefore asking for all par-ents/carers support in ensuring that students achieve the highest possible attendance. You can do this by ensuring your child is in school EVERY DAY. Unless your child is too ill to at-tend. We have dedicated members of staff that support families who experience difficulties in ensuring their child’s full attendance. If you are experiencing difficulties, please do not hesitate to contact our dedicated staff who can offer you support. If your child is ill, please take them to the doctors and bring an appointment slip at your earliest convenience so we can make a copy for our records. You should phone school EVERY morning that your child is absent so that their attendance records are kept accurate and up to date. It is harmful to a child’s education achievement to miss school regularly for minor illnesses such as colds, coughs, headaches or tummy aches. Although children may feel mildly under the weather they can often be well enough to attend school. If they are complaining of this kind of thing please bring them to school and if they deteriorate we will call you to collect them. Please only keep them at home if it is absolutely necessary. The school day starts at 8.30am. The teachers are waiting in their class from 8.25am. The stu-dent entrance gates close at 8.30am. Please ensure your child is in school before the register closes. If you child arrives after 8.30am then they MUST report to the main reception to sign in late. If your child arrives after 8.30am in the first session you will receive a text from the school. These late procedures are in place so that every child is entered onto the register and can be accounted for in the event of an emergency. To ensure the safeguarding of YOUR child, please make sure that these procedures are followed at all times. Tips to help you get to school on time everyday Make sure your child understands why school is important Show your child that you are interested in what they have done at school Get everything ready the night before school Arrange appointments where possible before or after school or during the school holidays Set your alarm and your child’s alarm clock. See who can beat the clock! Attend breakfast club Catch an earlier bus or set off a little bit earlier if you walk Holidays during Term Times They not only affect your child’s friendships and sense of belonging but also their academic progress. Whilst they are not here the rest of their class are still here and learning. When your child returns they may have fallen behind. They may not understand what the rest of the class are doing and therefore, fall further and further behind. This will affect their confidence and may put up barriers to learning altogether. Your children only attend school for 190 days out of 365. This leaves 175 days for holidays. Please book your holidays during these 175 days. Attendance Rewards Get rewarded for outstanding attendance! Students who achieve 100% will receive instant termly awards. Here are some of the rewards on offer: Certificate Carrots Voucher Pizza party for 100% at end of term 3 Best form per house weekly biscuits/sweet or drink vouchers for students
