Simple Math
Despite what countless self proclaimed experts
will tell you, body weight management is a
matter of really simple arithmetic.
Calories In = Calories Burned + Calories Stored
Written another way (your grade 6 teacher used
to say that, didn’t she).
Calories In – Calories Burned = Calories Stored
So if it is that simple why is it so
difficult?
• Studies have shown that humans tend
to underestimate their food
consumption and overestimate their
exercise.
• We also believe that we are eating
healthy foods that may be healthy but
they also contain a lot of calories.
Balderdash You Say! Take a
Look Below.
Food item Amount Fat (g) Calories (kcal)
Almonds 24-28 whole dry roasted (1 oz) 15 170
Walnuts 15-20 halves (1 oz) 16 175
Roasted peanuts 30 large 14 165
Soy nuts ¼ cup (1 oz) dry roasted 6 130
Peanut butter 2 tablespoon (1 oz) 17 210
Mayonnaise 2 tablespoon (1 oz) 22 200
Blue cheese dressing 2 tablespoon (1 oz) 16 150
Ranch dressing 2 tablespoon (1 oz) 18 180
Olive Oil 2 tablespoon (1 oz) 28.5 256
Polish sausage 4 oz 32 360
Our Point is This…
• We all know that Polish sausage is
not something that healthy dieters
eat; but what about those almonds
that may be full of omega 3’s but...
• Ounce for ounce almonds contain
twice as much fat and calories as
Polish sausage.
• Now there’s a revelation!
I only put a little olive oil on my
salad.
• Yeah, we get that a lot.
• 1oz of nuts and an ounce of olive oil
and you have a “healthy” salad with 45
grams of fat. That’s ½ of the average fat
consumption of a typical daily diet.
1oz of almonds sure
doesn't look like much!

management or need to lose
