TRANSCRIPT
Once again, another calendar year draws quickly to a close! The last few months have been busy and productive for us here at BAPS. Our students have been engaged in deep learning, and we would like to recognize and celebrate all those who have supported our students – our teachers, secretaries, caretakers and volunteers. What shines through is the remarkable character of this community of learners. We cannot say enough about the stellar efforts of everyone here at BAPS. Everyone continues to be outstanding examples of caring, committed and thoughtful BAPS citizens.
We would particularly like to acknowledge the incredible work of all of our BAPS staff. They are an amazing group of dedicated and caring professionals who give their best every day to ensure that our students have a plethora of opportunities to learn, grow and succeed both, in and outside of the classroom. As part of responsible BAPS citizenship, our Student Leadership Team has already been hard at work with many initiatives. We are so proud of our young leaders who truly act with hand, head and heart inspiring so many important endeavours.
At our annual Remembrance Day Assembly, we were treated to moving performances of our talented students. Beautiful music and thoughtful readings helped us remember and appreciate those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that our country remains free and democratic. We greatly appreciate the creativity and efforts of our students under the direction of Mme Eberlin and her team of teachers.
Coached by Mme Harper, Mr. Fish and Mr. Halfin, our Boys and Girls Volleyball teams had plenty of opportunities to practice their skills during a number of Area events. We are so proud of our athletes! During the annual Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, November 17, BAPS Marching Band once again wowed the spectators and judges alike, earning BAPS the Top Band award! Many thanks to Mme Eberlin, Mme Doucas, Mme Chamberland, Mme Harper, Mme Tanna, and all the parents who came out in support of our young musicians! During Bullying Awareness Week in November, we focused lessons, conversations, and community circle discussions on inclusion and respect, encouraging empathy and celebrating our differences. We focused on building positive friendship and developing strategies to get help and reduce the power of bullying in our lives. As a staff, we continue to reinforce a positive and respectful community culture, and look for teaching points not just during that week, but continuously throughout the year across all subject areas. One of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school each and every day. To that end, once again, we would like to bring to your attention that we continue to notice unsafe driving practices on the street in front of the school and in the school parking lot (e.g. cars doing U-turns, parking on both sides of the street restricting traffic, blocking busses, etc.). If you drive your child to school, we MUST ENLIST YOUR COOPERATION. Parking on side streets, especially McConvey because it connects to the pathway to the back of the school, is highly recommended. The walkway to the back of the school on Lynett Crescent is a shortcut that leads straight to the school’s backyard. This will alleviate the congestion at the front of the school and make the drop-off and pick-up safer for all. Thank you, as always, for your understanding and cooperation in this most serious matter. We always welcome community volunteers to support our safe arrival entry procedures.
Once again, our November Student-Led Conferences were a hub of excitement with a real community feel! We thank all our families who attended the conferences and had important conversations with their children and their teachers. Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we make a difference in the social, emotional and academic lives of our students – your children.
We would like to invite you to join us on Tuesday, December 18 for our annual Holiday Concert at 6:30 p.m. Please check this newsletter for the participating groups and times.
As we move to the final weeks before the holidays and you look forward to whatever form your celebrations take, may peace, love and joy fill your hearts and your homes. To all our families celebrating Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and New Year in the next couple of months – we wish you the very best of the season’s festivities – Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Habari Gani! We look forward to the new year as we continue our partnership in support of student learning and well-being. Happy 2019 everyone!

Our Leadership Committees are continuing to thrive! Here’s what we’ve been up to lately:
The Eco Committee - The Eco Committee is now opening the doors to our Grade 6 students! By joining, students will
have the opportunity to become leaders in their school community. The committee encourages everyone at BAPS to be environmentally friendly by having a few students from each class empty their compost and recycling bins each day.
We are considering how we can improve our EcoSchools certification status from Silver to Gold. Based on the audits we
have conducted, it is clear that we can boost our performance in energy conservation, waste reduction, and school ground greening. We can do it, BAPS!
The WE Committee - The WE Committee has been very active in November - Through our annual WE Scare Hunger
food drive managed collected around 1000 items! The committee will be visiting the Richmond Hill Food Bank in December, to get a better sense of what the organization does to help the community and what we can do to help. As
well, we will be selling Rafiki friend chains from December 5-12. These handcrafted bracelets, made by women in
Kenya, support different causes, such as education, clean water, and health, while being wonderful gifts for the holiday season!
The Spirit Committee - Having dedicated a lot of time into organizing Movember, an event to raise awareness about
men’s health issues, the members of the Spirit Committee reminded everyone to wear a creative moustache on Friday,
November 30. We had some amazing and wacky moustaches sported by students from all grades. The committee is now working on our holiday display case in front of the office, and planning spirit days - Pyjama Day will take place on
Friday, December 7 and Wacky Sweater Day will be on Friday, December 14.
The Graduation Committee - The Graduation Committee is continuing to sell tasty treats every Wednesday, to the great pleasure of our students. They are also brainstorming ideas for the Grade 8 Graduation sweatshirts.
The Yearbook Committee - The Yearbook Committee continues to capture the precious moments of our 2018 to 2019 school year!
The Communications Committee - Advertising the new initiatives and providing help wherever it is needed, the
members of the Communications Committee have kept busy this past month. Members of the Communication
Committee ensure that information is communicated from the committees to BAPS students through morning announcements and posters around the school.

Our intermediate Boys Volleyball team participated in the Area Tournament at Alexander Mackenzie High School on November 13. It was a long day, filled with 5 hard fought games of volleyball, with a 6th friendly game being added on at the end. Our team finished with a 3-1 record in our Pool, finishing second, but drawing a tough quarter-final match against H.G. Bernard, the eventual champions. Our intermediate Girls Volleyball team participated in the Area Tournament at Richmond Green Secondary School on November 16. We had a challenging start to the day, facing the eventual champions from Beynon Fields in our very first game. However, the girls rebounded and put together 3 excellent performances finishing the Round robin with a 2 - 2 record. Unfortunately, much as with the boys, the girls lost in the quarter-finals to H.G. Bernard. Congratulations to both of our intermediate volleyball teams on excellent area tournaments, the teachers are looking forward to our match later this year.

The Canadian Children’s Opera Company is very excited to offer their community outreach and education program, OPERAtion KIDS, to our school. OPERAtion KIDS In-School Program is a 6-session educational program that invites students to participate in the magical world of opera. Students work together to create the story and songs to their very own opera, while learning collaboration, responsibility and self-confidence in an environment that fosters creativity. Students will write their own lyrics, learn to act and sing, and possibly make the props and/or costumes (depending on timing) for their opera. All sessions are in French under the direction of Adine Mintz. At the end of the 6th session, the classes will showcase their 5-minute operas for each other and other students in the school. This program is made possible through generous funding from BMO Financial Group and the Minstrel Foundation for Music & Arts Advancement.

Author Kathy Kacer Visits BAPS
November 13th was a special day here at BAPS, because we welcomed Canadian author Kathy Kacer into our midst. It is not every day, that students have the opportunity to meet such a prolific writer, and we were moved to hear her talk about the many important stories that she has written. This quote from Kathy’s website describes the motivation behind her many books: “My parents were both Holocaust survivors. My mother survived the war by hiding. My father was a survivor of the concentration camps. Their stories of survival were an inspiration to me as I was growing up. As an adult, I was determined to write their stories and pass them on to young readers. In that way, future generations would never forget that time in history.” She shared her mother’s story (“The Secret of Gaby’s Dresser” and “Night Spies”) with the Grade 4 – 6 students, while the Intermediate classes listened to an account of Oskar Groening’s trial, which took place in 2015 and whose conviction would set a precedent for war criminals of that time in history. Kathy spoke to us with compassion, knowledge, sensitivity and insight, touching our hearts and minds with her words. The underlying message and final words she left us with definitely made an impact on all of us, because of their simplicity and timeliness: “Be kind to one another.” Thank you Kathy for inspiring us all!

BAPS Annual Fundraising Drive
We would like to thank everyone who has participated in the School Council’s annual fundraiser – BAPS Donation Drive. As you know, the Donation Drive ended on November 23, 2018 - donations continue to be accepted on School Cash Online. One hundred percent of your donation goes directly towards student resources and programming. Any donation of $25 or more will receive an income tax receipt, which you can print from School Cash Online.
In November, a group of four BAPS students participated at the YRDSB’s QUEST conference. The team took on the challenge of building a self-watering system for a classroom plant or garden. The team worked hard to plan, design and build their prototype and used problem-solving strategies to overcome many challenges during the day. They accomplished their goal and named their prototype “STEVE”. Not only are they proud of their product, but also that they tried their best to meet the expectations created as a team. The QUEST conference was an amazing opportunity to learn from other teachers and schools with students from different grades.

On Monday November 5 and Thursday November 8, the grade 5 students travelled to Queen's Park to enhance their Social Studies unit on Government. The students toured the building, learned about the kind of work MPP's do, as well as the responsibilities of provincial government. They also participated in a mock session of parliament and learned about the Speaker of the House, the Clerk, Sergeant at Arms, as well as the significance of the Mace and how it represents the presence of the Queen. It was a fantastic trip! A special thank you to all the parent volunteers who accompanied us downtown through ridiculous traffic. The trip would not have been possible without your support.

Please pass on this information to anyone interest in registering their child for Kindergarten
Kindergarten registration will commence on January 18, 2019 for the 2019-20 school year.
Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Children who turn four or
five years old during 2019, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public
school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergarten information
session for parents is being planned for this spring. For more information please visit the
YRDSB website or contact your local school.
Kindergarten Registration
Page 8 Issue 4
Information Sessions
Information sessions for Grade 1 entry into the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at French Immersion schools that have a Grade 1 program on January 17, 2019 at 7 p.m.
Please visit YRDSB’s website in January 2019 http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/fi/Pages/Program-Locations.aspx) to find the FI program location for your elementary school location.
Registration FI registration will begin on January 18, 2019. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten
students entering Grade 1 in 2019, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call their home school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. This Office Index
Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to the designated FI
program location to register, between January 18 and February 8, 2019. Registration during
this period is not first come, first served.
Late Registrations Late registrations are those submitted after February 8, 2019. Late registrations will be
treated on a first- come, first-served basis and will be considered subsequent to registrations
received during the registration period should overflow be necessary.
Accommodation Plan YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all
students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety
of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our
schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. Space requirements at some schools may mean
that siblings are in different schools for primary dual track French Immersion programs due to differing grade structures. Like any of our schools across the Board, changes to school
boundaries, and/or the accommodation model for the French Immersion program may need to
be considered when new schools open, a school experiences enrolment growth, and program changes occur. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to
use existing space in schools.
More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the
FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward
the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time,
as defined in Policy #108.

On Tuesday, December 4th the Suzuki piano and violin students performed at a combined concert in the BAPS Music Room. The children worked hard on their concert pieces, and were very excited to perform. There were 2 concerts with a short intermission where snacks and refreshments. The wonderful music was enjoyed by all that attended. For more information about the Suzuki piano and violin pro-gram , please contact [email protected]
BAPS Suzuki Winter Concert
With the arrival of the cold weather, we would like to remind you that
students spend time outdoors at least twice daily for recess and they should
arrive at school with appropriate outdoor clothing, including a change of
footwear and socks.
Please make sure your child has a pair of indoor shoes for school. Outdoor shoes
track in mud and dirt and it can be very uncomfortable for the children to wear
wet shoes and socks all day.
Every student must have a clean pair of sneakers for their physical education
classes, which they can also wear as indoor shoes. Please help your child achieve
success in physical education and help us keep the school clean. Please also
send in a change of clothing for your child, since our students often need to
change into clean/dry clothes during the day.
Cold Weather Approaching
An inclement weather day is a day where road or weather conditions make it impossible to operate a school bus safely. On days that extreme weather warrants the cancellation of school transportation, schools will remain open unless also deemed an emergency because of a breakdown of essential services. The decision to cancel transportation is made by 6:30 a.m. A bus cancellation message will also be available at www.schoolbuscity.com and by calling 1-877-330-3001, or by following the YRDSB and YCDSB on twitter.
Bus Cancellation & School Closure
Winter break is right around the corner! This is a great opportunity to take time with your child and
connect math to the real world. Below are some ideas that will help get you started:
Grocery shopping can involve money, budgeting, estimating, adding, subtracting, and measuring
Cooking can involve weighing, measuring, ordering, estimating, adding, and multiplying
Organizing for a party can mean matching numbers of people to plates, cutlery, area of tables,
ordering food, and seating arrangements
Going on a trip by car or plane involves time, distance, budgeting, speed, comparing various routes,
and shape scavenger hunts
Completing a half finished symmetrical design using playdough (e.g., half a butterfly, tree)
Building a snowman can involve measuring, spatial reasoning, and estimating
These ideas will help your child see the importance of math in their everyday lives through fun and
interactive ways.
Art and Math
Art and math have a lot in common with each other. In fact you can see the math in art and the
art in math! Patterns, shapes, geometry, symmetry, spatial reasoning, proportional reasoning,
etc… are all a part of the arts (visual art, music and dance), as they are of mathematics.
Some of what you see your child doing in school in the arts, is also an engagement with
mathematical ideas at the same time! By blending mathematics and the arts, students learn in
ways that are intellectual, emotional and physical. Children learn in many different ways, and
research tells us that participating in the arts is one way that is very engaging for all of us.
A child stringing beads in a pattern on a string or creating a patterned bracelet is creating an
understanding of patterning, although to them it may look simply like a pleasing design. When a
child learns to play the piano, they are developing mathematical understanding of the relationships
between scales, notes and chords. Symmetry can be seen in the symmetrical features of a
butterfly or in a design when building. Children may notice patterns in wallpaper, tile tessellations
on the floor or on a phone cover, rhythmic beats or repeated choreography in music videos or
chords in a popular song. There is math everywhere!
How might you and your child notice and name the mathematics in the arts (visual, music and
dance) that you encounter? Making the links helps deepen the understanding of both!
Interested in more?! Search on the internet for “golden ratio” to see an example of
mathematics at work in nature and art!
Everyday Mathematics:
Daily Decisions
We all use mathematics daily in what we do. Involve your child in using numbers to solve
problems and make those everyday decisions with you. For example:
“Do we have enough plates and utensils for all the guests coming for the birthday party?”
“We are doubling this recipe. How much of all the ingredients will we need?”
“We are fertilizing the lawn. The fertilizer bag covers three square meters. How many will we
need?”
“This store is selling the game you want for 20% off of $27.00. That store is selling the same
game for $19.99. Where should we shop?”

Instructional Time Begins at 8:00
Our entry bell is at 7:58. When students arrive late for school, not only have they missed part of their program, but their arrival is disruptive to the other students in their class. Students are expected to attend school on a regular basis and arrive on time. It is essential that students learn the importance of being punctual as it is a life skill everyone needs to develop. We understand that sometimes late arrivals are unavoidable due to emergencies and special appointments, but the majority of late days can be prevented with some careful planning by each family. We know traffic can be a challenge, however, if your child is eligible for bussing, and there is a reason why your child does not take the bus transportation provided and you must drive him or her to school, please arrive by 7:45, before the buses. Supervision begins outside at that time, so your child can wait for the bell with their friends in safety behind the school. Thank you for your cooperation with this extremely important issue.
Beverley Acres Public School

School Visitors
Page 12 Beverley Acres Banner
All parents and visitors are required to sign in at the office and wear a visitor’s pass. Parents may not go through the hallways or out onto the school yard. We ask that all families wait for their children outside the exit door. Parents, if you need to speak to your child’s teacher, please send a note or call the office to request an appointment. Following these procedures fosters independence in our students and ensures a greater degree of safety for all. We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe!
Please remember that at BAPS, over 98% of our students take a bus to and from school. For this reason, writing notes to change buses is NOT permitted. This is to ensure the safety of your children. Thank you for your cooperation!
No Bus Passes
If you pick up your child at the end of the day, please ensure that you arrive by 2:20 pm. If you know that you will not be on time, your child will be supervised by our staff at the back of the school and not be left to wait unsupervised at the front of the school.
Your child will proceed to the front of the school at 2:35 along with our bus students. Students will not be left waiting for parents outside alone at the end of the day.
Please ensure that arrangements are made to pick up your child by 2:20 or 2:35, at the latest.
If you plan to pick up your child up early from school you must call and arrive at the school before 2:00 p.m. Requests after this time will not be honoured as they disrupt our dismissal procedure. Thank you for your assistance.
Student Afterschool Pick up
Please be reminded that traffic congestion in a school zone is not only an
annoyance, it is a threat to student safety as well as a violation of the
by-laws of the Town of Richmond Hill. Neal Drive is a no-parking,
no-stopping zone which is monitored by the illegally may face stiff fines.
At BAPS over 98% of our students ride school buses, as such there is no
accommodation for parent traffic on the school grounds during morning
arrival and at dismissal. Please do not try to enter the parking lot at these
times.
Traffic Congestion
This is a reminder to all parents/guardians/students that Beverley Acres
Public School is a nut-free zone.
Please, for the well-being of your child’s friends and teachers, make sure to
read all food labels THOROUGHLY before sending food to school with your
child. If you use alternatives to peanut butter, such as sunflower seed or
soy butter, please make sure to indicate that by placing a note with your
child’s lunch.
Reminder: Nut Free Snacks
Page 13 Beverley Acres Banner
Medication
Children who need to take medication at school require a Request for Administration of Oral Medication Form signed by the parent before the medication can be given. If your child requires medication during the school day please see the Secretary in the office. Also, we ask that parents keep the school informed of any medical concerns they may have regarding their child. It is important that we work together to ensure the safety of all our students.
Too Sick to Go Out for Recess?
Then you are too sick to attend school. It is an expectation at Beverley Acres that if your child attends school then they must go outside at the recess breaks. Supervision is not available in classrooms or the office during these times of day. If a student is well enough to attend school, then he/she will be expected to go outside for recess.
Parents, please remember to pack a spoon and/or fork in your child’s lunch as we do not provide cutlery.
Spoons & Forks
When visiting the school PLEASE check the Lost and Found for any missing articles (clothing, water bottles, shoes, books, etc.). Any unclaimed items will be donated to charities as of December 21, 2018. Your lost items will be on display during our annual Holiday Concert. In the meantime, we have quite a collection of smaller items in the office (a number of pairs of glasses from last year and this, USBs, watches, jewellery, etc.). Should your child be missing any small items please check with the office.
Lost and Found
December is an Exciting Time of Year!
The first day of winter falls in December!
Start of School Winter holidays!
Spending time with Family and Friends!
December is also a great time to get outside, have fun in the snow and discover the great outdoors! .
When the temperature drops, it is common for many parents to want their kids to spend time indoors.
However, there are many benefits for kids to be active outside in the winter, including:
Building different muscle groups and improving physical health
Engaging in creative play
Being messy and having fun
Fresh air and sunlight
Learning first-hand about nature, the weather and the seasons
When children are outside they move more, sit less, play longer and sleep more soundly at night. Being
active also helps to improve your self-esteem, social skills and mental health. Here are some December
challenges we invite your children to try leading up to the holidays (December 3rd to 21st):
1. Walk to and from school or the bus stop everyday
2. Wish the crossing guard or a classmate on your walk to school a great day
3. On your walk to school make a snow angel
4. On your walk to school complete 10 star jumps and 10 jumping jacks
5. Make someone laugh today
6. Check your local recreation center for fun activities that you and your family can do over the
holidays
7. Say something positive to one of your classmates
Active School Travel is a simple way to fit physical activity into your daily routine!
If you live far, consider parking a block away and walking. If active school travel every day is a challenge,
choose one, two or three times a week to make a change.
Sincerely,
YRDSB Active Travel Team and York Region Public Health

Blizzard Cup
We are pleased to announce that the Blizzard Cup continues at BAPS for the 2018-2019
school year!
For those families who are new to BAPS, the Blizzard Cup is a community building
program where students earn points for their team colour. Students earn these points by
participating in sports, clubs, volunteering within the school, earning “Bravo” for speaking
French and participating in various Spirit Days throughout the school year. Parents can
also earn points for their child by volunteering at the school.
Each student at BAPS is assigned to a Blizzard colour (blue, green, red and yellow). This
colour will be their team colour for the length of their time at BAPS.
The Blizzard Cup race has started already. We kicked off the season by visiting the grade
4 classes and explaining how the Blizzard Cup works. The grade 4 students have found
out what their colour is and as a welcome gift to the school, they have also received a
bracelet of their team colour.
Anytime a child or parent earns a “Blizzard Point”, the child must fill in the ballot and place
it in the box in the office. Throughout the school year, points will be accumulated and tallied
on the board near the office. Monthly announcements will be made keeping everyone
updated as to the standings of each colour. Random prizes will also be drawn, so stay
tuned for more details.
The team colour with the most points at the end of the school year, will be
awarded a “Blizzard” ice cream party from Dairy Queen!
We have had a very exciting couple of weeks with the Blizzard Cup.
Here are the official standings as of November 22nd, 2018:
The Blue team is in first place with 216 total points. The Yellow team is in second place with 205 total points. The Green team is in second place with 185 total points.
The Red team is in fourth place with 143 total points.
There are many months left in the school year! Keep participating andstay active!
Reminder to all students, please fill out your ballots correctly.
You MUST put your first and last name, your grade and team color on every ballot .
Thank you for your cooperation and participation!
We are looking forward to a wonderful Blizzard Cup race!

Treasurer’s Report
BAPS has been a busy place so far this year and the students have participated in some
wonderful, valuable programs. Funding for many of these programs has come from
proceeds of our pizza and pita lunch sales. We thank the generous support of parents for
supporting these programs, and personally, I love pizza days when I don’t have to pack a
lunch! Our donation drive has been happening for the month of November. Thank you
for all those who have contributed so far. We are well underway to our fundraising goal
of a minimum of $4000! Donations can be made all year through
www.schoolcashonline.com. Sign in and then click on “Make A Donation” button (Circled
Red in image below) to donate!
Please rememebr to select school name , “BEVERLEY ACRES P.S.-C323” under “Fund Destination” in the “Gift Information” section, so your money is actually contributed to Beverley Acres P.S. Once your payment is complete, a receipt will be emailed to you, or you can print it from the site. For donations of $25 and over, you can use your Donation Receipt for Income Tax purposes. Your donations will help ensure programs planned for the New Year get funded and become reality for our students. Please take a moment and make your donation today! Have a wonderful holiday season!

School Council Meeting Dates
Beverley Acres School Council is made up of many dedicated parents, whom work hard to coordinate and execute many different events throughout our school calendar year. Each and every parent volunteer dedicates their time by attending meetings approximately 6 times in the school year. With their support, we have managed to establish an effective and solid foundation between the school and home life for our children. Below are some of the available positions on School Council:
