• Born 9th July 1937, Bradford, England. • Painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer,

photographer, digital artist. • Important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the

1960s. • 1948 – won a scholarship to Bradford Grammar School (one

of the best schools in the UK) • 1953 – enrolled in the College of Art. This is where he

began painting with oils. • 1961 – traveled to New York. At this stage in his career his

artwork was poetic and told a story. It was in NY where he met and became friends with Andy Warhol.

• Between the years 1982 – 87 Hockney experimented heavily with photocollage.

• Which he referred to as ‘Joiners’. • A joiner consists of a series of photographs

taken from different viewpoints, arranged (overlapping) to form a single piece.

• Hockney has been able to change the apparent shape of space and introduce the element of time into the work.

• Strong links to Cubism • His motivation for producing them was

to introduce three artistic elements which a single photograph cannot have: layered time, space, and narrative.

• The first two of these are central Cubist themes. – “Cubism was total vision: it was about

two eyes and the way we see things. Photography had the flaw of being one-eyed… My joke was that all ordinary photographs are taken by one-eyed frozen man!”

• First explored the use of the camera, making composite images of Polaroid photographs arranged in a rectangular grid.

• The theme of narrative is present from his earliest works.

• My House, Montcalm Avenue (1982), the series of photographs are a journey through his house.

• Later moved to regular 35mm prints to create photocollages, compiling a ‘complete’ picture from a series of individually photographed details.

• In Fredda Bringing Ann and Me a Cup of Tea (1983), the photocollage shows Fredda at all stages of her journey from the house, down the steps to the garden; a simple narrative.
