NORTH STARS SPECIAL HOCKEY EXPANDS Submitted by NB North Stars Hockey

Eighteen-year old Matthew Tignanelli's been playing hockey with the North Stars Special Hockey for seven years.

Now his younger brother Luca will have the chance to get in the game too.

President Sharon Fung announced the North Bay North Stars will launch a new Initiation program beginning September with the help of an $8,600 grant from GoodLife Kids Foundation. Funds were raised by staff, members, family and friends from the local GoodLife Fitness Club through their annual Spin4Kids fundraiser. The North Stars have partnered with Community Living North Bay to give younger children with special needs the opportunity to be physically active and join in a quintessential northern pastime – hockey.

The new team means the North Stars are able to offer a full path for players with special needs.

“For the past couple of years, we’ve had to turn away younger players because of numbers, but also because of a widening variation in size and ability in the Intermediate program,” says head coach Dave Nadeau. “We’re excited to offer an entry point into the North Stars for kids as young as six, who are of the age to start playing but whose needs wouldn’t be met in a mainstream minor hockey program.”

The Initiation program will focus on fun, instilling a love for the game, fundamentals and learning the rules of play with lots of individual attention and coaching support.

“Matthew’s teammates are some of his best friends and supporters,” says mom Kristen Tignanelli, whose sons are both diagnosed with autism. “His confidence has grown so much through hockey and being part of a team. We can’t wait to make it a family affair and to have Luca join next season!”

Families interested in the Initiation program can contact North Bay North Stars President, Sharon Fung at [email protected] for more information.

GREAT RESULTS AT CROSS EVENTSSubmitted by Elite Alpine Ski Cross

A busy month for Elite Alpine Ski Cross resulted in several visits to the podium.

A few of our FIS athletes entered their first FIS NOR/AM SX race recently at Calabogie and continued at Sir Sams. EASX's Cameron Grey managed to stay in the top 15 throughout the two events, and Trevor Smith stayed in the top 20's.

O-Cup Race #3 was at Horseshoe Valley. Elite Alpine entered in its third O-Cup SX event with some great results. Despite the less than perfect conditions, the team walked away with several medals. Both Leah Dufresne (U16) and Ben Dufresne (U14) won Bronze and Austin McLaren-Stewart (U12) earned Silver.

Colton Eggert and Cameron Gray qualified and entered the Ontario Winter Games in Orillia. Over a three-day period, the event hosted a Panelled Slalom, Ski Cross and Slalom.

Both placed top 15 in Panelled Slalom, despite not racing Slalom in the last two years.

In the Ski Cross event, Eggert fought his way to the big finals placing fourth in the exciting race with two different crashes.

Colton got tied up with another racer, costing him second place. Gray, who was not 100%, had a tough day finishing in the middle of the pack.

The event had amazing racing and was very exciting for the athletes and spectators.

Both athletes pulled out of day 3 to allow for rest and time to prepare for the O-Cup Series Provincials at Beaver Valley.

SILVER IN ORILLIASubmitted by West Ferris Minor Hockey Association

The East Side Mario's atom Trappers won silver in the Family Day Festival Tournament, hosted by the Orillia Terriers.

The Trappers qualified for the championship game by winning all three round robin games, including a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 shootout win over a team from Ilderton.

However, Ilderton came back for the championship game and edged The Trappers by one goal, scoring the winner with just 12 seconds to play.

A well played tournament. Congrats to the East Side Mario's atom Trappers for earning silver.

22 WING DEFENDS TITLESubmitted by Major Serge Palin, 22 Wing North Bay

Five teams from across Ontario participated in the Ontario Region Curling Championship located at CFB Kingston.

The 22 Wing Curling Team, Major Jim Burton, Captain Eric Emanuele, Corporal Chris Chartrand, and Major Serge Palin, was the only team with at least 3 returning members from the 2017 Championship - making them the team to beat.

In round-robin, North Bay got rid of early jitters to defeat CFB Borden 9-5. CFB Trenton showed resiliency but with a strategy change in the 8th, North Bay held on for an 8-6 win. Game 3 saw 22 Wing blow it open in the 7th end forcing CFB Kingston to concede, 8-3 final. CFB Petawawa handed North Bay a 4-2 loss to end preliminaries.

22 Wing met 3rd seed CFB Kingston in the semis. After a somewhat slow start, North Bay put the pressure on, capitalized on every chance, pulled ahead in the score and never looked back.

The final was set - versus Petawawa. Both teams started with an aggressive strategy in the first end. Coming down to the last rock, with most stones in play, Petawawa had two well-guarded stones with almost no way to remove them. North Bay executed a perfect “angle raise double take out” to score three. This play shook the Petawawa team, putting them on the defensive the entire game. Even though Petawawa made valiant efforts to come back, they could not match the North Bay players’ level of execution. After seven ends, and a score of 9-2, Petawawa decided to shake hands.

The 22 Wing Curling Team is now a three-time defending champion at the Ontario Region Curling Championship!

Thank you to the CFB Kingston Personnel Support Programs staff for a very well organized event enjoyed by all participants.

THINK SPRING – THINK ULTIMATE FRISBEESubmitted by North Bay Ultimate Players Association

What's Ultimate Frisbee?

Ultimate is a non-contact sport played with a flying disc. Points are scored by passing the disc to a teammate in the opposing end zone.

Other basic rules are that players must not take steps while holding the disc. Interceptions, incomplete passes and passes out of bounds are turnovers. Rain, wind or other adversities can make for a testing match with rapid turnovers, heightening the pressure of play.

Ultimate relies on the sportsmanship of players and invoking the "spirit of the game" to maintain fair play. Players call their own fouls, and dispute a foul only when they genuinely believe it did not occur. Playing without referees is the norm for league play. Observers are sometimes used in competitive events to resolve disputes, keep time and make some line calls.

The league is about to embark on a new season. For information and/or to join this fast-paced game, visit nbupa.com.

SILVER WEEKEND FOR HAWKSSubmitted by Powassan Minor Hockey

Powassan Minor Hockey House League teams were in playoff action at various rinks throughout the Northeast.

In Mattawa, the Powassan Hawks Novices started with a hard fought victory over host Mattawa, 3-1. Saturday morning's game against East Nipissing Freshmart Vipers saw the Hawks struggle offensively in a tough 1-0 loss. A 5-hour break recharged the Hawks. They came away with a big win over East Nipissing (Callander Animal Hospital) 9-1.

The Hawks were on to the semis against North Bay Ice Boltz. One big goal and superb defense was needed to get past the Boltz 1-0. In the finals, the Hawks met arch rival Temiscaming. The game went back and forth, but the fairy tale didn't materialize. The Hawks were defeated 3-2, but went home proudly

with silver. Weekend scorers were Rowan Grant, Jessie McGill, Jamie Thompson, Warren Little and Dwante Fernandes. Special mention to Austin Marriot for his first point ever.

The Powassan Hawks Atom 'Black' team were in East Nipissing for their playoff weekend. They upended the town-rival 'White' team 2-1, beat the Atom Boltz, 4-0 and Peewee Boltz 5-1 to reach the semis. The hard fought 5-2 win over East Nipissing gave Team 'Black' a chance for gold. The final was all it was advertised though the 6-1 loss didn’t do the game justice. Team 'Black' took silver. Goal scorers include Maddox Gedanitz, Allen Huang, Preston Bailey-Inglis, and Barrett Holotuk.

The Peewee's were in South River. Though the result was not what the team expected, the coaches were thrilled with the progress of the team all season. A tough East Nipissing team shutout the Hawks 2-0, then hot Almaguin goaltending stymied the Hawks 4-0, a disallowed goal in game3 made the difference in a 4-3 loss to East Nipissing. The last game had the Peewees against nemesis Mattawa. Despite playing hard and not quitting, it was not meant to be. Their playoffs ended with a 4-0 defeat.

Temiscaming hosted the Bantam playoffs. A tough first game against Mattawa saw the Hawks victorious, 4-0. The strong Temiscaming squad beat the Hawks 6-2. The 3rd game, against the Ice Boltz, was a must-win to advance. Out working and out hustling the Boltz led to an all-round 10-1 team victory. The semi against East Nipissing saw goalie Patrick MacGlauchlan earn his 2nd shutout of the weekend, 3-0. The Hawks earned the right to play for gold against Temiscaming. A tight contest, Temiscaming led 2-1 midway through the third, when they pulled away for a 6-1 victory. Tournament goal scorers included Derek Mogridge, Kaleb Grant, Nolon Robinson, Zeke Conrad, Jaden Giesler, Crystal Odd, Connor Koski and Thomas Klunder. This silver will be memorable for the Hawks. They played most of the season with only 8 skaters and one started playing hockey in January while MacGlauchlan learned to play net at the beginning of the season.

Sportsmanship, hard work, teamwork and friendship were common themes with the Hawks teams this season. Though no team took gold, they all played with a heart of gold.

The North Bay Granite Tennis Club is set for another exciting season - opening day is April 28. There are programs and

playing opportunities for children as young as two and no limit on how old you can be to come try it for the first time.

BOTH PEEWEE TRAPPERS ON THE EDGESubmitted by North Bay Trappers Hockey

The North Bay Savignac General Woodwork Ltd. Major Peewee AAA Trappers finished the regular season with a 3-game sweep of

the Soo Greyhounds, outscoring them 25-5. Highlights included Mya Lamorea take the league lead in most wins by a goaltender and forward Chase Thompson notching 8G and 3A in the series.

Finishing in 2nd with a 17-9-6 record, one point behind Nickel City, would see the Trappers face Timmins in the semis.

Game 1, the Trappers fore-checked Timmins to 4 shots in the 1st, but were down 1-0. North Bay struck back. Nolan Masson netted a power play goal off a great feed from Justin Turgeon. Then Masson added another from Riley Wolfe and Thompson in the 3rd. An end of game penalty kill with game winning saves by Lamorea secured the 2-1 win.

Game 2, all offence. A grip on the series took hold following the Trappers 5-0 win over Timmins. Aiden Lucier, unassisted, and Justin Rosseau with help from Finn Gould and Lucier started the attack in the 1st. Masson and Thompson each added unassisted markers in the 2nd and Lucier got the lone goal of the 3rd jamming home his second of the game. Vaughn Thomson collected his second shutout in a row for the decisive win.

With brooms in hand, the Trappers headed to Timmins for game 3. Sure enough, they swept away the North Stars with a 4-1 victory. Lucier was the offensive force notching a hat trick while Carson Laronde potted an empty netter to secure the win.

North Bay (at press) awaits the winner of the Sudbury/Nickel City series for the finals.

The North Bay Nipissing Reader Minor Peewee AAA Trappers secured top spot of their division, taking 2 of 3 games on the last weekend over Nickel City.

Losing the first game, 4-1, the Trappers bounced back with 3-2 and 6-1 victories. A good roll leading into the playoffs.

"Our team ended on top with most points, least goals against, most goals for and the best record," said head coach John Couch.

The Trappers got off to a great start in the semi-finals with a pair of impressive wins over the Sudbury Wolves.

It started at home with a 7-1 triumph. Zach Major potted 2 with Mathieu Turgeon, Davis Anello, Nate Gravelle, Ethan Desjardins and Nolan Newton each adding one.

A trend started. The 2nd game of the weekend, the Trappers rolled to an 8-2 win and a stranglehold on the series. Desjardins and Gravelle tallied 2 goals each, singles to Grayden Robertson-Palmer, Jesse Lefebvre and Newton.

Sudbury was promptly swept away the following weekend when the Trappers put a bow on the series with an 8-0 win. That set up the finals versus Nickel City, who themselves had swept The Soo. Both squads were rolling.

The Sons energy carried into game 1 as they opened up a 3-0, 1st period lead. Cue comeback. Newton with a pair, Desjardins and Tyler Moore tied it at 4s. Turgeon's tally in the 3rd gave the Trappers their first lead and, eventually, the 5-4 win.

Game 2, momentum swing. Turgeon tallied a trick with Newton adding a single in the 4-1 victory, which gave North Bay a 2-0 series lead heading back to Nickel City.

TOUGH GAMES FOR RINGETTESubmitted by West Ferris Ringette Association

Eighteen of northeastern Ontario’s top ringette players travelled to Orillia in early March to compete in the Ontario Winter Games,

facing teams of elite players from six regions of the province. The competition was tough, games were fast and the stands were full for five round-robin games and playoffs at the Brian Orser Arena.

The Northeast team consisted of five players from each Timmins and Sudbury, six players and a goalie from North Bay and a goalie from Sault Ste. Marie.

The team came out strong in their first game of the tournament, tied with Team United at the end of the first before falling back to a 4-2 loss.

A hard and fast tilt against Central Ontario saw the teams match goal for goal in the first until Central took the lead in the second on their way to a 5-2 victory.

The game against Team Western was tough, but Northeast made their opponents work hard for their victory, scoring in both periods.

Team Northeast narrowed the gap a bit against Team Eastern in the morning and Team Southern in their final game, but still came up short.

Team Eastern defeated Team Western in sudden death overtime in the finals, an outcome that summed up how tight the competition had been throughout the tournament.

Reportedly players were being scouted at the Winter Games for possible invitations to Team Ontario camps later this spring as a lead up to the Canada Winter Games next year. While the team didn’t bring gold home this time, the Ontario Winter Games could have set the stage for some of the Northeast’s fine players to move on to an even tougher challenge next year.

NORTH STARS IMPRESS

AT TOURNEYSubmitted by NB North Stars Hockey

The North Bay North Stars headed south to participate in the 3rd annual Kitchener Ice Pirates Friendship Tournament at the Activa SportsPlex. Out of town tournaments are a real highlight for the teams as they rarely get a chance to play other teams in the Special Hockey International League.

Each team played three games capped with a banquet and dance party.

“Weekends like this are great for the team” said manager Sharon Fung. “It’s a great team bonding experience and good for the group to play their peers for a change. The North Stars are still the only special hockey team in Northern Ontario so they get game ready by playing community groups throughout the season.”

Both A and B teams were up against some good southern Ontario talent but they played with their usual enthusiasm and skill and enjoyed the experience while demonstrating good Northern Ontario sportsmanship. Both teams ended the tournament with a special medal ceremony on the ice.

SHOOT FOR THE STARSSubmitted by West Ferris Ringette Association

The West Ferris Ringette Association’s U-12 team made it to the Provincial Tournament in Niagara Falls early March.

They played strong throughout the three day event.

The U12s were a young team. Six of fourteen players were in their first year at this level and four were underage. Tournaments were tough, almost always facing older, larger and more experienced teams.

But, the U12s were more than a match in grit, determination and team spirit. Their development through the year was phenomenal.

They came a long way from the start to their final game at the Provincials. The season started with a number of shutouts and wide spreads in scoring. The players worked hard to develop their skills and made a big impression on older team members and parents. They showed true-blue West Ferris colours celebrating their achievements

after each game – a tough check in front of the net, a pass well-received with challengers bearing down. Off-ice, these players were in the stands cheering on fellow West Ferris players in the older age groups. If there was an award for cheers, this team would win!

The Provincial Tournament was a great success. Their progress was to the point where other coaches and tournament organizers commented on the team’s growth. Even since the team’s last tournament in Burlington 6 weeks prior, coaches and parents have seen the growth of their skills, confidence and the bonds between players on, and off, the ice.

Most importantly, this team never gave up. Some future Ringette stars will evolve from this group.

Team members include Robyn Lefebvre, Stella Nixon, Caitlyn Seidler, Addision Grasser, Halle Webster, Abby Elvish, Payton Houle, Kalea Bissonnette, Kenzie Webster, Layla Lefrancois, Grace Cassidy, Gabi Kendall, Bryn Read, Delaney Crowe.
