BCSC TWILIGHT MEET Our Twilight meet in January was a huge success, I know that visiting clubs were shocked to see such a big carnival and a big team from Blacktown.

With some 65 swimmers from our club we showed the visiting clubs that Blacktown is back and we rock.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers who raced and represented the club with pride both in and out of the water. To those who represented the club for the very first time we are proud of you.

To the parents who helped with various duties in time keeping, as runners, selling raffle tickets, presentation and medal table etc, THANK YOU! Many hands DO make light work.

Thank you to Jill Burrows for being our official photographer at the meet. There are some beautiful pics of our gorgeous kids.

And lastly, thank you to the technical officials from MSW who always give so freely of their time to ensure that the meet was the success it was. Special mention to Kathy Thompson from MSW for assisting our new Race Secretary Belinda Havron with the entries for the meet. Thank you Kathy.

2015 NATIONAL OPEN WATER by Kerri Tiems The 2015 Australian Open Water Swimming Championships was set down for Bathers Beach in Fremantle from Friday, 13 February, to Sunday, 15 February. Bathers Beach is a well-known swimming & recreation area in Fremantle which is located about 20kms from the heart of Perth CBD, Western Australia. My mother, older sister & I decided to find accommodation as close to the venue as possible, so that we were within walking distance.

We left home very early on Thursday morning to make sure we got to the airport on time, but of course, our flight was delayed, so it ended up being a very long day. By the time we got to our room, we were exhausted, but we decided to go for a walk down to Bathers Beach which was only 5mins away. It was quite windy, so the sea was a bit choppy, but not too bad, so I wasnít too concerned about my training the next day. Fremantle looked beautiful, so we decided to go for a long walk to take-in the scenery, and check out the eateries. We fell in love with this unusual port city. Fremantle is a mix of the old & the new, in what looks like a fishing village in parts, with great food & lovely people.

After an early night, and some ìencouragementî the next morning, I completed a brief training session at Bathers Beach, and I felt reasonably comfortable with my 5kms swim to come on

Sunday. However, by Friday afternoon, conditions had changed dramatically, and on Saturday morning, we woke up to the news that the Championships had been postponed until further notice. A briefing session later that morning confirmed that the Championships would resume that afternoon, however, at Rockingham Beach, 30kms away. Swimming Australia organised buses to take competitors & their families to & from the new venue for those that didnít have their own transport. We raced back to our room to research Rockingham Beach. It looked beautiful, but we did read up on some of the dangers ñ sudden change in sea conditions with strong & unpredictable currents, and jellyfish a little further from shore that give a sting that causes a very painful inflammation which takes weeks to heal. Suddenly, I was terrified about my swim the next day.

We decided to make our own way to Rockingham Beach the next day, so that I could sleep in a little more. I had a restless night, thinking about the uncertain day to come. However, when we arrived at Rockingham, it looked like paradise. It was a clear hot day, low tide, and the sea was virtually completely still & flat. Suddenly, my swim didnít seem so terrifying. There was no sign of sea-life other than some gorgeous starfish, and fish that came up to us on the shoreline. At 11:15am, it was time for the 15yo girls to start their 5kms swim. My race suit was ripped by another competitor during the usual chaos at the start, but other than that, the event was proceeding well. I got into a nice rhythm early, and by the 2.5kms mark, I was in about 7th place. I felt comfortable, but aware of the sudden change in conditions to come when I started to spot lots of big jellyfish swimming below me. Until the 3kms mark, there had been no withdrawals from either the 15yo boys or girls races, and then suddenly, we were surrounded by jellyfish, and the currents began to get stronger & stronger. It was too difficult for me to swim in a straight line. I was being thrown around all over the place, and after struggling to remain calm, I began to swallow water & had to be rescued back to shore. Swimmer after swimmer withdrew, and the shoreline suddenly looked like a battlefield of wounded soldiers. Surf Lifesaving, First Aid Officers & Paramedics were kept very busy. I was relieved not to have been stung by any jellyfish as I was able to recover quickly, but I was extremely disappointed not to have finished a National swim in which it looked like I would have finished Top 10. However, I did the best I could do under the circumstances.

Since returning from Fremantle, I have dramatically reduced my training sessions as I battle illness, juggle school assignments, and consider my swimming future. I have already qualified for National Open Water next year, so I need to regain the passion to resume training for this event and/or pool Nationals. My school commitments are very high, but it is difficult to give up a sport that I have been a part of for so long.
