    It is now the seventh time the issue Intro published by theDepartment of Machine and Product Design gives publicity to thehighest quality works done by students attending the IndustrialDesign Engineer program. Besides presenting the best projectstaken from Industrial Design courses and courses on IntegratedProduct Development, which series of courses are in the main focusof the education program, this edition also provides a selection ofdegree works.

    Thanks to the interdisciplinary character of the program thecolorfulness of the themes shown by this issue will hopefully raisethe interest of the companies and enterprises, also institutes ofhigher education nationwide and abroad who recently had a lackof information about our education program having an almost 15year tradition. Those are the ones, to whom by this edit ion, besidesinforming, we would like to offer an option to establish contacts withus aiming a useful and fruitful cooperation.

    We believe that everyone nds fresh information in the booklet, letthem be industrial partners or educational organizations with whichwe maintain a partnership for years on common projects, degreeworks or even on the elaboration of the educational materials.     It is a tough challenge for the designer to fulll the aestheticalfunction at a high level and at the same time to meet the technicalfunctions in a reliable and economic way. The main characteristicof the Industrial Design Engineer program is the parallel educationof aesthetic, technical, ergonomics, marketing and managementknowledge, which are then integrated in project tasks.

    The project works of the two main groups of multi-semestersubjects, the Designing and the Integrated Product Developmentshow nicely how it is possible to reach for innovative shapes alongwith the unity of form and technical content.

    The results of Designing projects represent the individual creativityand the visual experience establishing ability of our students. TheIPD projects create an innovative atmosphere of real team-basedengineering activities by combining individual and team work.

    The results of those projects, besides the product documentation,are the self-made physical or virtual 3D model and a presentationposter of the product.

    Golyra is a skill developing toy for 4-6years old children. It improves manual skills,perception and concentration skills. Toys withcomplex rules often make children uninterested.To avoid this problem we created a simple rule,the goal is to separate the balls by colour in thetwo segments of the toy. We intended to give aminimalist and geometric but also showy shapeto the product; therefore we chose the rotationalhyperboloid shape.

    The product is a toy-robot for 8-14 years old chil-dren, which can be made to walk. You can giveinstructions to it with the light of a simple ash-light, thanks to the photodiodes on the coverthat activate the motors through a Darlington-connection.

    The Mszka has six legs and two engines,each operating 3 legs. Changing the direction of

    the light affects the diodes on its back, we canforce the toy to change the direction of its walk.At this time only 3 legs move on one side.

    The product may be released with covers ofmany different colours and graphic decorations,so that every child can choose the one that tshim the best. Our aim was to create a productwhich attracts the attention of children for scien-

    tic issues and traditional moving toys.

    The product is intended to promote SONYWalkman MP3/MP4 players. All of the fourbranches of the product line are representedby a player and to each of these players belongone pair of stepdancing shoes. With the helpof a control unit and 4 motors the actuatingmechanism is able to move the shoes eitherseparately or simultaneously. Each of the justmoving elements is lighted from above by acolourful led. The product was designed to tthe windows of Sony stores. When preparing thebasic concept and the shapes of the product wepaid high attention to the dynamic and elegantstyle of Sony.

    Our assignment was to design a load-controlleror load-relief equipment which would help therehabilitation process of patients gone throughleg injures, fraction or surgery, or amputation.The unit could be attached to the shoes of thepatient, and able to control if the limb is overor under loaded, the degree and distribution of

    load, indicates if the patient over- or underloadsthe limb, and it is also able to contemporarilysave the data for further evaluation. The producthas two main parts: the shoe insoles with built-inpressure sensors, and the control box which isto be attached on the ankle. The measurementof the load is done by FSR sensors on fourpoints according to the right walking pattern.

    The over- or underload is normally indicated byvibration, and in a critical situation by beeping.

    In the framework of Integrated Product DesignII we had the task of designing toys. Our groupof three, called Kidd, chose and realized theproduct concept of Ariel Lvay.

    The group worked together from pitching ideas,elaborating and developing details until produc-ing the nished working model. The structure

    itself is controlled by two knobs, one to move thefork vertically and another to steer the vehicle.Three pallets also belong to the ensemble,stored together with the forklift in the eco-friend-ly box designed by the group.

    The model is made of wood and metal andnished with sprayed paint and varnish.

    After nishing the term project we tested the toywith success in a group of children.

    The LG HI-MACS Design Contest was orga-nized in 14 countries with the title Light. It wasa condition to use the new translucent HI-MACSmaterial. Different elements from this materialcan be joint seamlessly, so objects with impos-sible looks can be created. I was the winner ofthe Hungarian round of the contest. The idea ofeach national winner was turned into a prototype

    and was shown on the Milan internationalfurniture exhibition in the Zona Tortona event.My presentation was very successful; I receiveda prize for the best presentation. The name ofmy prototype is BBL, which stands for Big BangLamp, because it opens from a sphere to agalaxy- or a ower-like lamp and this is also theway to change the intensity of the light. It is suit-

    able for hotel halls or conference rooms.

    Tricsukli is a multi-function tricycle for 2-5years old children. The seat-height is adjustable,adapting to the fast growth of children at thisage. By changing the gage of the rear wheels,it can be transformed into a bicycle, helpingthe child learn the real cycling. Being foldableit is easy to store and to carry - a great help inhouses without elevators. Its dynamic forms lift

    My design is a set of furniture (containing aspecial operative chair a mobile standingsupport and a desk) mainly for special schools inthe Hungarian education.

    The form of the chair allows the moving for thestudent, so they can concentrate on the lessonfor much longer time. The lack of moving andexcercise is a common problem in most schools

    but its even more important in some specialcases.

    I created a kind of furniture which can be their ownof every single student. Everybody has a chair andtable with different height, a certain colour and onevery chair there is a small case for articles forpersonal use.

    The aim was to design a vehicle which is able toexpress emotions and to behave actively.

    In this way it becomes a part of the trafc, theintentions, direction or motivations of which maybe read of its movements.

    The independent suspensions and the bug-likebody enable the product to react to different

    situations with different body language. Thesesituations are for example the start, expressingfear or happiness, or in this way we can makedifference between slow walking or fast speedrunning. The active behaviour is important forexample in the bend, when a regular vehiclewould lean out, this vehicle holds against thecentrifugal force. It makes it stable, and theheading can be read in a glance.

    For this chapter of this years edition a selection was done fromthe best diploma projects of the last ve-year university grade andthe degree works of the rst seven-semester BSc graduates. Thenal projects in both educational forms conserving the practicalfeature of them focus on solving real, company-hosted problems.Depending on the rst assignment from the pillars of the programsometimes the designing, sometimes the technical design is moreemphasized, besides the integrated application of the other elds

    of science.In comparison of the diploma projects to the BSc degree worksit can be stated that the difference is not in the quality of theelaboration but in the spread and complexity of the tasks, as it isproven by this selection.

    This joyful fact, and the Industrial Product Engineer MSc program,which was just started in the fall of year 2009, the number andpreparedness of applicants, and also the experience of teachers

    could guarantee that the switch to the bi-level education will notresult in a decrease of level in the domestic industrial designengineer education.

    I think that the most important point in addi-

    tion to the execution of the basic functions is tocreate a perfectly usable bus shelter, which canbe placed in different downtown areas. This is a

    junction which merges into its environment andshows simplicity instead of striking. It gives infor-mation about the services in many ways, so itsdenitely recommended for the popular districts.Its built up from modules with the use of qualitymaterials. Its internal parts efciently provideticket booking, passenger information system,and waste gathering in one compact block. Thebus shelter can be enlarging to the desirablesize because of the backside and roof modules.Double-roof structure can be built too, whichcan be used at the middle-platform stations. The

    damaged parts could be changed in a faster andsimpler way.

    My degree work is part of a larger scalepublic transportation project on the Danubeat Budapest, called Duna Express. I had tointegrate the Duna Express ship line into thevisual (symbolic) and transportation (logical)system Budapest with the central ship stop.The square and the riverbank area provide avery unique environment. I put the ship stationon the lower quay of Buda, right next to thesquare in Northern in the level of the upperquay. This way it saves space and doesnt af-fect the view from Batthyny square. It is easyto connect it with the nearby METRO and sub-urban railway lines.My principals for creatingthe visual elements were sensibility, elegance,clarity, transparency and speed. I made a verycraggy geometric, still organic concept, and I

    designed every part I could to t this image,trying to make a total design.

    My goal was to design a mobile child seat thatmeets the standards of the Design for Alltheory and that is equally useful and appropriatefor both healthy and handicapped children. Theproduct is a safety seat of which the main advan-tage lies in its comfort features. Since the seatcan be turned to the side by 90 degrees, the

    My task was to design an air therapy Jacuzzi

    using salty water. After identifying the existingtrends and solutions, I made substance andcolour studies, onto the already tested andsaleable products. I started to generate ideas intwo directions: organic and geometrical forms.

    I prepared the ideas in proportion of 1:20 to seein the space how the forms develop. I examinedthe applicable standards. With the selection

    of the structural elements and machines, Iprepared a assembly drawing which helped inthe additional planning. I made patent researchnally, and I did not nd similar product orsolution yet in the Hungarian or in the Worldpatent database. I prepared a cost calculationin which can be visible that the realization of theproduct comparing to the other luxury tubs onthe market, is realistic.

    In my degree work my goal was to bring back theatmosphere of the old times, when the disheswere served on gueridon tables. I intended torecall the time when the food was served asidethe table right in front of the guest, when theservice was more spectacular and more intimatethan nowadays.     Topic of my thesis is developing a penthouse

    with solar collector. The task is to construct asolar collector, which has similar power param-eters as the competitors but needs substantiallylower investment. As a basic type I have chosenthe type of the solar collector, called pillowcollector. It is an absolutely simple constructionwith many good qualities, for example the longexpectation of life. The calculations veried the

    practical experience, that each m2 of the pillowcollector is able to serve the daily need of hotwater for one person, weather depending. Thedesign of the penthouse needs to suit to thestyle of the house. For this reason I suggest toapply two sheet metal wings for the two sides ofthe penthouse, which can be designed for theactual demand of the customer.

    The task of the degree work was to design anew, innovative lighting, the spectacle of whichis built on the special phenomena of light.To reach realistic results a special imagingsoftware, based on physical calculations, wasused called Maxwell Render throughout thedesign process. TRINITY atmospheric lightutilizes the refraction ability of prisms. Differentshaped and colored lights are projected on the

    wall by the optical system of 6+1 bent prismsand the 9 high-performance LEDs. To reach thedesired refraction it uses a special lens designedfor 9 LEDs, which focuses the rays in a 10degrees range. All prisms are easy to remove,therefore their number could be varied to ourtaste. Using an appropriate piece of accessorythe light source could be mounted on the wall or

    even on the ceiling.

    The assignment was to design a modern indoor

    shading system which breaks with the ordinarymethods. The product was developed on the ba-sis of my idea. I realized that there is potentialityin this eld of design because the shades beingused nowadays are quite simple ones and justdiffer in small details. I decided to create an in-door blind which pieces together with an outdoorshutter. My aim was not to absolutely dim out, just

    to strain the incoming light. I made up this productinto home surroundings. In my opinion I couldreach my goals since the product is modern, cre-ative and variable. It consists of petals which areeasily adjustable by hand. It can be positionedanywhere in front of the window by the help of theinner handle.     I had the idea to promote Hungarys mineralwater by the water fountain. Hungary is rich inmineral water, we can be proud of our naturaltreasure. Every distribution has its own fountainsupplied by its own mineral water, to maintainit and in exchange for advertisement. I want toattract the attention to the healthier life. My taskwas to design a modern special water fountainin the city of Budapest. This water fountain is

    different from the usual city fountains, both inits function and form. I intended to recall theoriginal role of the fountains: meeting point forthe citizens. The main advantage is that it canbe installed anywhere you want since it is amobile fountain, which should be suitable for thecity life..     My work was aimed at developing a newaccessory part for a vacuum-cleaner to bettermeet the consumers demands. The toolwas created for cylinder machines of the topcategory. Three suction nozzles are combinedin the product: an electric rotating brush, acorner- and an edge-head. The essence of myidea is that we do not need to lean down in orderto change the nozzles, we can simply push abutton on the handle of the vacuum-cleaner

    to rotate the nozzle in the right position. Thismovement is produced by a small stepping-motor. Completely new ideas appear on thesuction nozzle, for example a dust-sensorcombined with the digital display. The easy-to-move function is supplied by three ball-shapedwheels. My concept combines solutions thathave not appeared on the market yet. With theuse of them, vacuum-cleaning will be more

    comfortable, more efcient and more enjoyable.

    The aim of my thesis was to design a set of furni-

    ture for kindergarten, which makes monotonousday nursery environment more diverse due to itsmobile pieces, inspires children to spend theirtime more creatively and, as a result of its con-guration, eases the life of pedagogues. Piecesof MANO furniture give nursery-school childrengreat freedom in forming the required space forplaying on their own. The pieces of furniture are

    capable of following the constant movement ofthe children, thus enabling the different playingprocesses to be linked more easily and makingthe utilization of the playing area more efcient.Mobile childrens houses may be adjusted to thenumber of playing children, encouraging mutualgames which constitute the basics of socialisa-tion. Because of their ergonomic form MANO

    nursery chairs are suitable for children at allages from three to six.

    In my thesis I created a concept, that is - in spiteof the market being saturated brings along acompletely new solution in mechanism, shapeand visual experience as well. The fundamentalidea was a tap which is brought into motion by thepower of water an idea that is not yet presenton the market. In the focus of the motion there islens shape. The lens is split into two halves. Byusing rails, the upper half can slide forward ontop of the other, as more water ows out from thearced opening. The geometry was constructedin such a way, that it drives the uid allowingthe water to leave from the tap even in the closedstate, at the beginning of the motion. The tap cre-ates a one-of-a-kind visual experience, and themotion makes usage exciting.

    In private homes curved walls are used es-

    pecially in living rooms, which is a hard taskfor an interior designer because there is no orinsufcient amount of proper furniture. The ele-ments of MODIVA furniture can be combined inmany different ways according to users wish. Itcan also be used as an interior space separa-tor. Maximum six (opened, semi-opened and/or closed) shelf units can be built upon each

    other vertically and two neighboring shelf unitscan be skipped in a row. Frames allow rotationon the centerlines by axial ball bearings. Thecurve of the furniture can be xed by fasteningthose bearings. Most of the parts are made ofAlucobond. It is a lightweight material with asandwich structure, which consists of two 0,5mm thick aluminium layers on the sides and a

    polyethylene core.

    In my diploma thesis I redesigned the suspen-sion of the Traxxas Slayer radio controlledmodel car using the reverse engineering meth-od. By the aspect of failures I dened the mostcritical elements of the suspension with the aidof FMEA analysis (suspension arms). In the nextstep I digitized the physical model of the originalSlayer suspension arms with a 3D Scanner, and

    transformed the result (a spatial pointcloud) tosolid bodies. In order to improve the mechani-cal strength of the suspension arms I optimizedthe geometry. Before manufacturing the partsI tested them with a computer load simulation.The prototypes of the suspension arms wererealized by Polyjet rapid prototyping technology.The components were made of carbon bercomposit by small series manufacturing (siliconmould and vacuum casting).
