As we say goodbye to the infernal Indian summer, everyone is looking forward to respite in the form

of June showers. The lovely monsoons come with their own fair share of trouble. Of course, we knowthere would be innumerable potholes, water logging, bumper to bumper traffic… but still, I am sure,

just like me, many would agree that rains are magical. The sweet scent of the dried earth when itdrizzles, children playing in the water, paper boats floating by, clouds gathering over the sea, raindrops on flowers and leaves, colourful umbrellas, ginger teas, plateful of bhajiyas… countlessmemories are attached with this wonderful season. But then, there are a string of rain checks too before the downpour happens and everyone at home, especially the lady of the house is ready with a list. For instance, my own mother is preparing thehouse against the onslaught of moisture. She is keeping aside all things heavy that will take ages todry. It is just one of the many things all Indians do in anticipation of wet weather. So dear reader, whilewe all get ready to welcome the monsoon; we bring you some design ideas to enjoy this season offresh energy, regeneration and prosperity in style — without the worry that comes with the weather

Scan through our numerous picks in the Bazaar  section (from furniture, to furnishings to beautifulaccessories) which echoes the colours of the season — sexy stark greys, blissful soothing blues, andearthy energizing greens. Travel with us to lifestyle brand Home Town’s Mumbai location to take

cues from a setting styled by the in-house team of furnishings brandTangerine. This bedroom setup showcases the brands latest monsoonrange of bed and bath linen. Simultaneously, there’s alsocontemporary bedroom furniture from Home Town. Teamed withblue and green accessories; this DIY feature will urge you to stay in bedfor a lot longer! Dryers, we all need them during these wet months —we feature the five best tumble dryers from leading brands across thecountry in our Hi-Five pages. Don’t miss out on our special feature ondoors and windows in our In Focus section.

And yes, the residential projects we feature this month are wow-inducing… read it at leisure and revel in their design intricacies; while Igo and pay homage to the rain gods we so eagerly wait for every year.

LETTER OF THE MONTHThe 10th Anniversary issue of Better Interiors is simply fantastic. And what made it so special was the theme — introducing 10 young, dynamic and talented women in the field of architecture, design andart. I loved the way the theme was explored through variouscategories in design, each of them written in detail and well laid out.But I must confess I was in complete awe of the beautiful productsdesigned by Valerie Barkowski for the brand No-Mad. Having saidthat, I think all the women featured in the issue are exceptional. Thisissue definitely makes it to my archives. Congratulations oncompleting a decade in print!KRITIKA JOSHI, AHMEDABAD

VERY GRAPHICMamagoto is one of my recentgo-to restaurants. The food(especially the caramel spongecake), the fun ambience and

decor together makes it a veryenjoyable dining experience forme. I always used to appreciatethe decor and the graphics herebut never really bothered to knowwho had designed the space. Ithink this is the case with mostrestaurants most of us visit. Butwhen I read the article on graphic

ART AND CRAFTFrom all the stories featured thisAnniversary issue, I felt thatDakshyani Gowda’s journey andher work with Sanchali was themost interesting read. Very rarelydo we come across people whoare trying to make a difference

with their work and this one isdefinitely applaud worthy. I amglad that the magazine broughtDakshyani’s story to the forefront.Thank you and congratulations oncompleting a decade.ROSE FERNANDES, BANGALORE

SUNNY HOMEThe article titled, The Light Housefeatured in theHabitat  section ofyour incredible 10thanniversaryissue made me write this letter. Iabsolutely loved the way thearchitects at Khora have turned adull, introvert house in Bangaloreinto one that is full of light, warmthand vibrancy. The courtyard, theentrance, the verandah andstaircase are all filled with lushgreen trees and plants and addfreshness to the space that is sohard to have in metropolitan cities. So in a way it makes me envioustoo and I hope I can have a homelike this one someday. For now, I just I’ll just make do withappreciating this one.FATEMA MERCHANT, MUMBAI

designer Chetana Vij Sharma, Irealized that a restaurant is not just about the food… the decor ofthe space adds to the entire

experience and is not somethingto be easily neglected. The nexttime I like a restaurant, I will makeit a point to find out who hasdesigned it.KARAN VERMA, NEW DELHI

PICTURE PERFECTMy husband and I are big on decorand have a penchant forcollecting artefacts from acrossthe globe. We also follow yourmagazine diligently andappreciate all the work the teamputs in month-on-month. The 10th anniversary issue was a great

BEAUTIFUL HOMESThe Habitat  segment of BetterInteriors is my favourite. My

friends and I have gone throughthe homes featured in themagazine countless times andhave tried to pick up ideas fordecorating our homes; be it afurniture piece, upholstery or acolour scheme. This issue too theteam has done a splendid job andall the articles were a great read.

read. However, it is only once ayear that we get to see the facesof the team behind the working ofthis monthly magazine. So, I

thought of writing to you tocongratulate each member of theteam for the milestone achieved. Ialso noticed that the location isoutside The Great Eastern Homewhich we visit often and I neverthought it would make for such alovely backdrop for a picture.Great stuff!SANAM MATHUR, MUMBAI

Especially loved the projectsdesigned by Amee Vora, InkArchitecture and Chrysalis DesignStudio. While each space has adistinct design style and identity, Iwas impressed with the approachthat each firm/designer followedto bring the homes to life. Lovedthe tree branch-shaped bookcase(featured in Ink Architecture’sarticle) and plan to use the designfor my daughter’s bedroom.Great job!GUNJAN LAKHANI, PUNE

    The New Sri Lankan House

THE NEW SRI LANKAN HOUSEAuthor Robert PowellPhotography by Sebastian PosingisISBN 9781780675749Essays by David RobsonPublished by Laurence KingPages 224Availability Amazon IndiaReviewed By Varna Shashidhar

DISCOVER BEAUTIFUL BESPOKE HOMES BY SOME OF SRI LANKA’S LEADING NAMES IN

    ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN TODAY.

    THIS INSIGHTFUL BOOK HAS

been penned by Robert Powell, the prolific author of over 30 titleson tropical houses around Asia. The New Sri Lankan House is acomprehensive collection of theworks of Sri Lankan architects.

Geoffrey Bawa, the legendaryregionalist architect is well knownand much revered across Asia, butothers from this spectacularisland country remain side-linedas their work is small in scale andoften private in nature. But thenthis book comes along tointroduce their extraordinarycontemporary work — 26 homesby 21 such ingeniousprofessionals. It acquaints us witha new generation of Sri Lankanarchitects who are undoubtedly

charting a new direction forpost-war architecture inSri Lanka.

It’s clear from the projectsfeatured that the new generationSri Lankan architects share agenuine concern for climate, ecology and harmonious living. The tome is divided into sectionsbased on the location — from the

coast to the suburbs and includescity dwellings. There is attentiongiven to aesthetics and serenityimbued in projects such as theGuava House designed byarchitect Ranjan Aluwihare — itsports a sensational pool thatextends to meet the hills. Thenthere’s the focus on simplicitythrough a delightfully modernistentertainment pavilion in urbanColombo which is designed byarchitect Palinda Kannangara.Architect Channa Dasawatte’s

own house built around personalhistory (such as windowssalvaged from a Bawa project) is

another interesting projectfeatured here. This book clearlyindicates that the architects inSri Lanka have a rich, individualistic oeuvre that hingeson a balance and respect foropen plan as much as it does of

the built. Evocative photographsby Sebastian Posingis providea fresh perspective ofthese projects. There are some other perks too.David Robson, who has authoredauthoritative books on Sri LankanArchitecture including ‘GeoffreyBawa: The Complete works,Beyond Bawa’ has contributed anintroduction and an essay on theLegacy of Geoffrey Bawa.Additionally, there are projects byfamous Sri Lankan architects,C Anjalendran, Vijitha Basanayake

and Madhura Prematillake. Not just that, three Sri Lankan familyhomes designed by celebratedarchitects Tadao Ando, Kerry Hilland Shigeru ban also finds placehere. Then there is RobertPowell’s essay on Tropical

Architecture in Sri Lanka whichdiscusses Geoffrey Bawa’sCinammon Hill House atLunuganga as an exemplaryapproach of how living withnature can be embraced insteadof having the two conflict. This book which is devoid of anyexcessive theorization will be aperfect discovery for readers whoadmire beauty, simplicity andeloquence. One hopes that anequally compelling volume ofpublic work from this country willsoon emerge.

MUMBAI-BASED ARTIST DHRUVI Acharya is influenced artistically byIndian miniature paintings, contemporary comic books andTakashi Murakami’s Superflatmovement — her paintings are afusion of various artistic genres.

Employing a subtle, dark and wryhumor she creates beguiling imagesthat convey the often-contradictorylife of the modern urban Indianwoman, privileged, but withunderlying discord from the socialand environmental constraintsaround her. This artistic journeybegan when she started painting hermemories attached with thehomeland after marrying and settlingdown in the US in 1995. Thesepaintings were an extension of herdrawings sensitively chronicled in a

LEKHA WASHINGTON TELLS US ABOUT HER BRAND AJJI, AND WHAT INSPIRES HER TO KEEP A

BALANCE BETWEEN HER ACTING AND DESIGN CAREERS.

When in life did this passion for design engulf you? I’ve been keen on creating things for as far back as I canremember. I would design my own toys and games at seven, make moulds out of flour and generally obsess about details.

An established actor, a product designer and an artist…how do you balance all these arts at the same time? Picka favourite… I love all three, and am only truly balanced when I have a littleof everything in my life. That’s a tough act to juggle, sometimes I get it, and sometimes I don’t. No favourites, I love

    it all!

The profile on your webpage states that you are aproduct designer, sculptor, actor and teller ofsilly stories. Tell us one of those silly stories whichresulted in a fantastic product design…Well, my very first chair, the Pink Sink, was made when I wastrying to make the worst chair possible. You see, at a course atNID called Bad Design we were trying to make products thatlooked highly impractical — a chair that looks like it can’t holdyou, something really uncomfortable was what I was tryingto create.

Tell us about Ajji, who/what is the inspiration behind

the brand and what do you plan to create and retailthrough Ajji?Ajji is what I used to call my grandmother, who was one of themost formidable, talented yet kind people I knew. I hope that Ican create truly original design and ideas in the best possibleway through my brand. Manufacture of one idea allowing forthe prototyping of another idea is the model on which thiscompany is built.

The sculpture Phases of the Moon debuted at the KochiMuziris Biennale 2015… are you working on moresuch beautiful creations? Is there an exhibitionlurking somewhere?Yes! We hope to have an art piece of a floating iron ball in apublic space in Mumbai at the end of the month, then   A   N    C

    FrameStory

Imagine gazing at a Gothic cathedral in

England, a skyscraper in Dubai or apalace in Jaipur from across the street. The first thing noticed in all the threestructures are the doors and windows…each having a distinctive identity and

architectural style. Irrespective of the country, era or structure, it is the doors and windowsthat give us an idea of what lies inside, makingthem the focal point. Thanks to successfullychosen doors and windows one can create acomfortable atmosphere and stress on theuniqueness of a design.

A beautiful door is one of those subtlenecessities that can make a big difference in

your home's style. Like trim or moulding, most

doors go fairly unnoticed, but they can have adramatic effect on the look of the room. Sincemost of us purchase or rent homes with thedoors already installed, we often look rightpast them. But an entrance door is a vital partof a house and there should be a good amountof thought that goes into choosing one. Ifyou're building, remodelling or redecorating aroom, the entrance door is an important step.Style, materials, soundproofing and swing are

just some of the points to consider whensorting through the endless options available.

Similarly, windows too have an enormousimpact on your home. Besides the obvious

windowsmanufactured byEncraft feature fixedpanes, top openingfanlights and sideopening lights. Thesystem comes intwo profile depthsEN42 (42 mm) andEN62 (62 mm).

(size and location), the windows in your house

can give your home personality. Whether it’sskylights or enormous fenestrations that allowlight to stream in — they’re portals to theoutside, and also help control temperatureand insulation.

Another important consideration whilechoosing a door or window is safety.Companies are therefore manufacturingproducts that meet this requirement. One suchexample is Rehau’s window systems which canaccommodate several shoot bolts and securityhinges available in the market. Due to theEurogroove in their sash profiles, all multi-

point locking hardware can be installed tofurther deter break-ins. In addition, thewindows supplied by its fabricators andinstallers are internally glazed. This meansthe glazing beads that hold the glass inplace are on the inside and cannot beremoved externally.

    TYPES AND STYLES

Be sure to pay attention to the overall size andatmosphere of a room. A massive and ornatedoor may overwhelm tiny spaces, makingthem feel smaller or a modern plate-glassfenestration will look out of place in a perfectlysymmetrical vintage area. Today, industry and

consumers alike are aware of the role a door

or window plays and therefore are coming upwith numerous options. Interior designers areknown to customize choices as per clientpreference and decor of homes. AIS VUEprovides solutions in various sizes dependingupon requirements. “We offer various profiledesigns for different applications —casement, awning, top hung, tilt and turn,French and sliding windows — to name a few.Apart from white, these UPVC profiles areavailable in wood finishes such as dark oak, walnut and mahogany,” says Vikram Khanna,CMO, CIO, Asahi India Glass.

“The UPVC casement, sliding windows andsliding doors offer excellent thermal andsound insulation, as well as efficient protectionfrom water seepage and dust ingress. Thedesign team of Fenesta designs a windowbased on the aperture size, wind load, heightof building and rainfall intensity. This makesthe best choice in terms of functionality aswell,” informs Saket Jain, business head,Fenesta Building Systems.

    MATERIALS

Getting the choice right for the material, especially for exterior-facing doors like thefront entryway is critical for its longevity and

Major players in thesegment vouch for UPVC doors and windows. The benefits of the material according toVikram are as follows, “UPVC or unplasticizedPVC offers superior benefits and allowsgreater design flexibility. Being a polymer,UPVC is resistant to wind, fire and water. It iseasy-to-maintain, prevents leakages, thermalinsulation and zero environmental impact asthey are lead-free.”

Throwing some light on the materials forwindows, Robert Hoellrigl President Research& Development Encraft India Pvt Ltd says,

CLOCKWISE, FROM TOP LEFT AIS Vue usesstate-of-the-art, functional hardware for its

    window systems as seen here.

AIS Vue offers a range of styles to suit everyneed. Two Sash Laminated Casement Window,Single Sash Casement and Two Track Two SashSlide are some of the options available.
