Myissuewithbeing40isnotthatIfeelold,becauseIdon’t.Ithinkit’sthestarkrealisationthatlifeispassingbytooquickly.Therearestillsomanygoalsunattained,somanythingstodo,placestosee.SoI’vesubscribedtothetwinmantras: ‘lifebeginsat

40’and‘40 is thenew30’anddecidedtotake lifebytheproverbialandmakesomechanges(for thebetter).Asaresult,wehaveput togetherapurelyself-indulgent issuethatarmsyouwiththeinformationyouneedtoattainbetter

Bridget Benelam, senior nutrition scientist at the BnF, says: “It’s not just hot weather that puts people at risk of dehydration. when it’s cold, people may drink less. this may be due to a reduced thirst response or simply because we don’t feel like chilled drinks in cold weather. so it’s helpful to be aware of how much fluid you’re consuming each day. Plain water is a great choice, but water in the diet can come from many sources, some of which people may find surprising. we hope the guide will dispel some common misconceptions, as well as help people stay hydrated.”

IwasrecentlywanderingpeacefullythroughashoppingcentreinBrisVegasthatIhavebeenfrequentingsincemyteenswhenIneededtomakemyroutinevisittotheladiesroom.AsIshutthetoiletdoor,thefaceofaterrifiedwomaninanadvertisementstaredbackatme.Themessagepromotedaservicespecialisinginanxietytreatmentsandthesloganinferredthatyoucouldneverescapeit,thatitwouldbelikeaboogiemonster,alwayswaitingtogetyou,anytime,anywhere.

femalehormonereplacement, is that therearedifferentformsofhormonesandhormonalcombinations,aswellasdifferent formsofdeliveryofhormones.Therisksandbenefitsofeachcombinationaredifferent.WhenmedicalstudiesofHRTarequoted,theyusuallyreferto those reportingequineoestrogens–acollectionofpurifiedoraloestrogensderivedfromtheurineofpregnantmares,andanoraldrugderivativeofprogesterone.ThisformofHRThasbecomeverypopularoverthelast60years,particularlyinNorthAmerica,andhasbeenthesubjectofnumerouslargestudies,tothepointwherethetermHRThasbecomesynonymouswiththisformoftherapy.

Morerecentstudiesof this formofHRTindicatemodest long-termincreasedriskofbreastcancerandheartdisease,aswellasdecreasedrisksoffracturesandcoloncancer.However,itiscommonlyreportedthatnotalloestrogen-progesteronecombinationsofferthesamerisk-to-benefitprofile.InEurope,forinstance,transdermal(gel)oestradiol,whichisthemostimportantfemaleoestrogen,andoralprogesteronehavebeencommonlyprescribed

since1980.Long-termFrenchcohortstudiesofthishormonalcombinationhavefoundnoeffectonbreastcancerrisk,andasmallreducedriskover15years.Europeanstudieshaveshownthatoestrogensarebestappliedtopicallytoavoidadverseeffectsthatoccurwhentheypass through the liverupon ingestion.Bycontrast,bio-identicalprogesteronehasbettermetaboliceffectswhentakenorally.Increasedriskofbreastcanceroccurswhenoestrogenis takenorally and/or adrugprogestin issubstituted for natural progesterone. Thetopicallyappliedoestrogensandoralbio-identicalprogesteroneformofHRThasbeenreportedtohavethemost favourablerisk-to-benefitprofile.Obviously,therearemanycontributingfactorstobothbreastcancerandheartdisease,includingobesityandgenetic,diet,lifestyleandenvironmentalfactors.

Imagineyouhavejusthadanargumentwithyour loverandyoufeelsadandupset.Orperhapsyouhaveheardbadnewsaboutafamilymemberandyourmindstartsracinginpanic.Haveyoueverwantedtoswitchoffthesadness,thepanicortheupset?Haveyoueverwishedyouhadmorecontroloveryourfeelings?

Itisimportanttounderstandthatemotionsarenot‘bad’.Infact,inmyopinion,themostimportantpartofthehumanpsycheisourabilitytohavefeelings,becausetheycanultimatelyguideus inour lifemoreunerringly thanourlogic.Thekeywithfeelingsistoobservethemasiftheyaretools,indicatorstohelpusenjoyandsteerourlives.However,itisalsoimportanttokeepacloseeyeonthemtoensuretheydon’tderailourclearperspective.Althoughunpredictable,feelingsarehere

acidsandthemostimportantnutritionallyare:∂-lipopenicacid,eicosapentaenoicacid(EPA)anddocosahexaenoicacid(DHA).Omega-3fattyacidsarethe immediate

liquidatroomtemperature,butsolidwhenrefrigerated.Theyarealsomoreresistanttogoingrancidthanpolyunsaturatedfattyacids.ThemostcommondietaryMuFAisoleicacid,aΩ-9fattyacidfoundinvegetableandseedoils,nuts,avocadoandsomemeats.Mostofthesepossiblybeneficialcompoundsaredestroyedbyprolonged,high-temperaturecookingor frying,soconsiderdrizzlingonyoursaladinstead!Anumberofstudiesshow thatahigh

ourdietcontributestoheartdisease,morebecauseitraisesbad(LDL)cholesterolthanasaresultofthedietarycholesterolitself.Weshouldaimtoreduceourintakeofsaturatedfat to lessthan7%ofourtotalcaloriesbylimitingourintakeofdairyproducts,includingwholemilk,butter,cheeseandicecream.Themeatofgrass-fedanimalsandbirdsalsocontainsmuchlowerlevelsofsaturatedfatthanconventional,grain-fedanimals.

membranesofeveryhumancell,where itfunctionstokeepourcellmembranesflexible.Italsohasanimportantroleinthefunctionofbile,whichisimportantforthedigestionandabsorptionoffat,aswellasfat-solublevitaminssuchasVitaminsA,D,EandK.CholesterolisalsousedinthebodytosynthesiseVitaminD,aswellasanumberofhormonesimportanttotheageingprocess,suchascortisol,estrogensandtestosterone.

Everydaythebodymakesabout1gramofcholesterolandtakes inanother20-30%fromfood.Anyfoodthatcontainsanimalfatalsocontainscholesterol,especiallyeggyolk,beef,poultryandprawns.Thebodycontainsanumberofdifferent

formsofcholesterol.ThebestknownareLowDensityLipoprotein(LDLorbadcholesterol)andHighDensityLipoprotein(HDLorgoodcholesterol).LDLcholesteroldepositsinthewallsofbloodvessels,contributingtostiffeningandnarrowing,andultimately theirageing.ThehigheryourLDLcholesterol levels, thehigheryourriskofheartattack,strokeandotherdiseasesof thebloodvessels.Ontheplusside,foreveryonemmol/LthatyouincreaseordecreaseyourLDLcholesterollevel,yourriskofdeathfromcardiovasculardiseasechangesby20%.

AnotherwaytodealwiththeLDLproblemistooffsetitwithHDL.HDLparticlesremovebadcholesterolfromthewallsofbloodvesselsandtransportitbacktotheliverforexcretionor safer storagesites (reversecholesteroltransport).Peoplewithhigh levelsofHDLcholesterolhavealowerriskofheartdiseaseandstroke.

• Consideradrizzleonthesalad,liketheGreeksdo,notspabathforpotatoes(astheFrenchwouldfry).Fordressingsandflavour,trysesame,oliveorwalnutoils.Trysomefresh‘hand-picked’oils fromlocalproducers.Theytastemuchbetter.

• Chooseorganicorvirgin(notrefined)oils,asthesecontainmorepolyphenols.‘Firstcoldpress’meansthatitcamefromthefirstpressandgenerallycontainsthemostphytonutrients.‘100%PureOliveOil’isoftenthelowestqualityavailable.Goodqualityextravirginoliveoilshouldhaveadistinctgreentinge,andbestoredinthedark.Ifyouroil is lightoryellow,itspolyphenolcontentisprobablylow.
