TRANSCRIPT
Volume XXXIII Number 3 July 2020
Newsletter of the Isaac Knapp District Dental Society
It’s now late spring, we are deep in the middle of
the Corona Virus Pandemic, George Floyd
passed at the hands of police officers, and our
futures seem all but certain. I am pretty sure
that no one could have imagined 6 months ago
that our lives would be in this current state of
upheaval. With that said, I am pushing forward
with my theme for this next year for our dental
society. My hope is this will move us all away
from the uncertainty, and begin to move us back
toward a feeling of hope, and at least some
control, in our lives. At the All-Day Meeting, I
announced the theme as Better Every Day.
This idea can help us to refocus our minds
and thoughts back to the parts of our lives
that we can control and at least influence.
The Better Every Day theme helps me to focus
my energy on the parts of my practice,
relationships, and personal life that I can most
influence. The continuing education planned for
this year will be focused on teaching all of us to
work toward some level of improvement in all of
these areas. We have the IDA OSHA training
on October 7, 2020, a Financial Practice
Management Meeting on November 11, our
Dine & Learn featuring a Mental Health
Program and Discussion on January 13, 2021, a
YDC Winter CE event in February 2021, and
our All-Day Meeting with a Customer Service
and Communication Workshop by Zing Train on
April 30, 2021. This will give us plenty to
remain focused on throughout the coming year.
Staying focused and true to our missions will
help us all to move in the right direction during
this time.
The Better Every Day theme also provides a
great backdrop for considering the COVID-19
Pandemic and George Floyd. These are topics I
did not even consider when thinking of my
theme for this year, but I would be remiss if I did
not discuss these. The pandemic makes us
consider, in a much more thoughtful way, all of
the infection control procedures we already use
every day. I am amazed how many times I have
heard people say over the last few weeks that
now we are more aware of how we put on our
masks or how much more attention to detail I
have when washing my hands. This is great that
we have been refocused on this important part
of our profession, but now we realize we must
remain focused on these ideas over time
and try to improve on them every day.
Finally, I feel I must dedicate this last paragraph
to George Floyd. Wow, what a moment in time
we are living! It really feels the American society
has realized how deeply rooted some ideas of
racism and injustice are. I hope we are now all
able to improve our “practices” in this area too.
So many disparities have been brought to light
in the weeks since Mr. Floyd’s death. I am
certain these have had an impact on our
profession and on the professional services
available to minority populations. With this new
and raised level of awareness and consideration,
I hope we can help to keep the focus and
attention on this topic until we truly do all see
each other as equals.
Keeping focused on the things we can control
will help us in the weeks and months ahead, and
working on improving something along the way,
will only make things that much better. Let’s all
try to make something Better Every Day.

FROM THE EDITOR - By Dr. Ben Clinkenbeard
We all face setbacks in life that we don't understand. The
ongoing virus issues, illness, loss of a loved one, depression,
financial strife, loneliness. When we go through loss and
disappointment, it's easy to get discouraged and think that's
the way it's always going to be. But our God is a God of
restoration. He doesn't stop every difficulty. He doesn't keep us from every challenge. But
He promises He will be with us every step of the way.
Psalm 71 says "You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but You will
restore me to even greater honor." I interpret this suffering as a setup, a preface of
things to come. God allowed the difficulty, not to make you miserable but to restore you to
greater honor. God never brings you out the same. He makes us stronger, better, more
prosperous…not always on our time, but rather His.
When we are in tough times at home or the office, we have to remind ourselves that it's
NOT how the story ends. The loneliness, the bad break, or the anxiety is not your destiny.
Greater is coming—greater joy, greater strength, greater relationships. The
setback in your finances, or the illness or the current difficulty at the office didn't stop your
purpose. Greater opportunities are coming. Greater favor. Greater influence. That hardship
was put there to set you back. That hardship did not realize it's setting you up for God to
show up abundantly in your life. It was meant it for your harm; the Man upstairs is turning
it to your advantage.
When you're in difficult times, keep this phrase in your spirit: "Greater is coming." God
didn't bring you this far to leave you. He wouldn't have allowed it if it was going to keep you
from your destiny. It's just the opposite. It's going to launch you into your fortune.
The trouble is temporary; the glory is permanent. The key is: Don't stay focused on the
suffering; stay focused on the glory that's coming. It may be tough right now. Life
has dealt you an unfair hand. That suffering is not in vain. It's serving a purpose. It's leading
you to greater honor, greater favor, greater victory.
If we are going to see, feel and live the greater good, in the middle of the difficulty we must
start believing, "Greater is coming." (excerpts included from Lakewood Church)

I know I speak for the entire dental community in expressing our deep and
profound sense of sadness upon the passing of our friend and colleague,
Dr. Lloyd Hagedorn. We extend our collective and sincere condolences to
Lloyd’s family as they mourn his sudden and unexpected death in late May.
Within the Isaac Knapp Community and beyond, the name Lloyd has been
synonymous with many commendable qualities. We knew him as a gifted
clinician, tireless leader and spokesperson for organized dentistry at all lev-
els, loyal and humble servant for many worthwhile causes that benefitted
our profession and the community at large, world traveler and adventurer
who seemed equally at ease in the South of France or the South of Allen
County where he lived and worked for over forty years, devoted husband
and father, devout Catholic who lived his faith tradition every day.
Lloyd was a role model and mentor in our midst for many years and we will
miss him. His warm smile and firm handshake made it obvious he was gen-
uinely glad to see you. He was forthright but always gracious and respectful,
self-effacing if made to feel too important. However, he has left an indelible
legacy to lead our lives with joy, service, grace, humility and civility. And if
we do, the world will undoubtedly be a better place. Job well done faithful
servant!

Thank you to those who contrib-
ute to make our community and
our society stronger!
Hoping
everyone has
navigated
through the
stormy days of
the virulent
virus and
moving
forward with strengthening and favorable
winds assisting. These past months have been
through uncharted waters and I trust each of
you is finding calmer times now. It has been
an education to filter through all the details of
not only dental/medical information but also
business management. Could all of this be
credit towards an MBA? I think I will rest on
what I have learned through this and not
pursuit this new degree any further. Are you
listening royal corona? Stay in the background
and leave us alone!
Our April foundation meeting was held via
Zoom and I am happy to report that all
showed on the screen, (some looking like they
had been living on a secluded island for 3
months) and we were able to conduct
business. Joining our board in September for
a three year term will be Sonya Shively and
Andrew Hobbs. I appreciate their
willingness to serve. Thank you, Ryan
Holmes, for your work with the foundation.
The spring golf fundraiser was canceled but
we did touch base with all our partner vendors
and members to inform you of all the good
things that have been accomplished. Thank
you goes out to all our partners and
each of you for your continued support
of our community through your
foundation. Please remember to keep
the foundation on your dues statement
next year. Thank you.
Finally, the board recognizes all the
dedication and hard work our friend and
colleague, Dr. Lloyd Hagedorn provided
selflessly to Isaac Knapp and to this
foundation board. Those who knew him
understand that words fall short to describe
his tireless effort to always help and be a
friend, whether it was through business
relations or personally. He carried his
endearing smile and warm personality
everywhere brightening the day for everyone
he met. Dr. Hagedorn will be missed. Our
thoughts and prayers are extended to his
family and friends as we remember that
timeless smile.
Stay calm but focused and keep on rowing,
staying on course even if you encounter some
head wind again. Good things are on the
horizon and the shoreline is in sight.

On June 9, 2020, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) issued a news
release announcing the opening of an advanced provider portal for an additional $15 billion
in distributions from the Provider Relief Fund for eligible Medicaid and Children’s Health
Insurance Program (CHIP) providers.
In addition to being an eligible Medicaid or CHIP provider, recipients cannot have received
any funding from the Provider Relief Fund General Distribution to be eligible for this
distribution.
To access the funding, providers will be required to provide information within the
Enhanced Provider Relief Fund Portal, including annual patient revenue, which will be used
as a factor in determining the Provider Relief Fund payments received.
Please note that application for this funding must be completed by July 20, 2020.
The HHS news release announcing this Medicaid and CHIP Provider Relief Fund funding

DR. WAYNE WALKER
Wayne D Walker, DDS
2009-2010 IKDDS President
Family: Dr. Walker and his
wife, have one daughter, Dr.
LaQuia Vinson and two
grandchildren, Cole and Arian.
Education: University of
Illinois at Chicago
IKDDS/IDA Involvement:
Previously: IKDDS Board
Member, Treasurer, President.
Served on Peer Review
Committee
Currently:
IKDDS Delegate to IDA HOD
IDA Membership Committee
Community Involvement:
Speaker of the House for National
Dental Association
Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne
Biggest Influence: Dr.
Walker’s Step-dad was his first
mentor. He only had an 8th grade
education, but always wanted to
make himself better. He worked
hard and was an amazing
individual.
Interesting/Fun Fact:
Originally attended IU and then
was drafted. He spent three years
in the military and was a dental
assistant. He was able to serve in
Hawaii and then returned to Fort
Wayne and worked in business.
His interest in dentistry remained
and was able to attend the
University of Illinois in 1981.
After working in Chicago for
awhile, he eventually found his
way back to Fort Wayne.

What led you to step out of your comfort zone
and run for IKDDS President in 2009?
Dr. Dan Schmidt asked me to be on the board and so
I spent my time on the board. About the time I was
ready to step off the board, he said “Wayne, what do
you think about going through the chairs?” I did not
think that was for me, but of course, with his encour-
agement and support, I agreed. I served as Treasurer
for a couple of years before becoming President. It
was a great experience where I got to meet a lot of
people. There are so many older dentists who were
truly mentors of mine during that time; Dr. Stetzel,
Dr. Hagedorn, who always treated me fair. There
may have been people who did not agree with me
being in my position, but no one ever said anything
to me.
You are also active with the American Dental
Association. Can you please describe your
involvement with them?
It is an organization of African American dentists,
which is important and close to my heart. During the
pandemic, it was interesting to see how they worked
through the same issues as IDA and ADA even with
the decision to have a virtual convention.
How were you able to pursue your love for
dentistry even with roadblocks placed before
you at a time when there where very few Afri-
can Americans pursuing dentistry and may
have even been discouraged?
Affirmative action truly was a big part of any minori-
ty trying to advance in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. For me
to get into the University of Illinois, there was an
affirmative action program where they were trying to
get 17 minority students to attend the dental school.
Some dropped out and didn’t graduate, but 13 of us
finished the program. That brought 13 African Amer-
ican dentists out into the world because of affirma-
tive action, in our age group, to be given the chance
to do anything. We hope we don’t need those pro-
grams now to help people get on the same plane.
What areas do you think are better than when
you entered dentistry?
In terms of students themselves, trying to prepare.
Education was important in my household, but some
people didn’t think education was as important to
them. Now, younger people (and I use my daughter
as an example), ever since they started school, they
want to do well. We encouraged her, of course, but
didn’t push her because she has an incentive of her
own to want to do better than other people. I was the
first African American person in my family to gradu-
ate college. Subsequently, other people have gone.
My sister has an education degree, my daughter, and
my wife went back to school to get her degree.
Sometimes you just need to see somebody to
say, “Okay. I can achieve that.” That is why it is
important to me to mentor young people. I love
going to talk to young people. You may ask 7th-9th
grade kids what they want to be and they will re-
spond, “I want to be a basketball player.” That’s fine
now, but what if that isn’t an option. One of the
things I try to dispense to them is to get their educa-
tion. If they get their education, whatever you do
athletically, it will support that, but if they don’t
make it on the athletic part of things, they still have
something to utilize for themselves. They can’t take
away what’s between your ears. If you have educa-
tion, they can’t take that away.
What inspired to you start your journey into
dentistry as a minority?
When I was in middle school, they had a school
called Smart School on the corner of Pontiac and
Smith. They had a program where dentists would do
dental screenings. That sparked an interest with
having to go to the dentist as a child. As I got older, I
realized that I wasn’t a corporate type person. I need-
ed to do something independently and dentistry was
an option for me to work for myself and do what I
needed to do and when I needed to do it without
punching a clock.
ADA, along with the NDA, recently made a
statement regarding no more and taking an
active stand against racism and the recent
acts of violence. There was a charge of action
to not just embrace diversity and inclusion as
words, but to also live each day with inten-
tion. From your perspective, what does living
with intentionality look like in this area?
Regardless of how far we grow up as people, I think
people are starting to see things they didn’t before,
especially with cell phones recording interactions.
People can now see what we have been saying for
years. Once you see things, it puts things in a
different light and it’s hard to turn your back
and walk away. That is what’s happening now. Life
as a black man has not always been the most joyous
thing for a lot of reasons. It’s something you deal
with as you live life and young people are now seeing
the same people struggling for 400 years and they
ask when do we stop struggling? Now they want to
do something about it. You hate to see them burning
and tearing things down because that doesn’t help
the situation. I don’t believe in that. I believe that
protesting for a cause is important. It’s just as im-
portant for the protestors to give the right actions in
order to make a change. If there’s no action, you’re
just making a lot of noise. But, I also think people
will continue to protest and try to get their point
across, and they should. My protest days may be
behind me, but the cause is still at the forefront be-
cause I have grandkids. Their challenges will be
different than mine because the world is different,
especially with the pandemic. Some things are just
not right. Something needs to change. In their life-
time, that is all they’ve seen. Sooner or later we
have to change it. There’s only one race—
human race. We bleed the same blood.
How can we encourage minorities to become
involved?
One of the ways, locally, is the representation. Not
everybody is not fit for leadership, but we
should have an opinion about what happens
in the society. I didn’t want to be president, but I
did it because people encouraged me and I felt that

A year ago, I
began my role as
Executive Director
for IKDDS.
Previously, I had
only known of its
existence from
pure mention and
didn’t know what and who Isaac Knapp
represented. As I reflect on this past year, my heart
is overwhelmed with appreciation and fascination
to who YOU are!
I didn’t know upon acceptance of this role that I
would meet such amazing people and the rich
history that Isaac Knapp represents. I didn’t know
that I would also be thrust in the middle of a
difficult year identified by a pandemic. While trying
to navigate my way through learning a new role, I
had the opportunity to witness many of you
experiencing the most difficult time in your career.
Often, we recognize that a person’s true character
comes through during hard times. You did not
disappoint me at all. My experience through this
difficult year solidified my admiration of the
commitment that you have for your
profession, your patients, and the
community.
I want to take time to express my gratitude
to all of you! You have welcomed me with open
arms and been available to answer questions. I
could not have made it through this year.
I am forever grateful to Dr. Angela Becker. She
believed in me and invited me to apply for this
position. The blessings I have received in just one
year has been abundant to last a lifetime. I also
want to thank Dr. Catherine Periolat. I feel it
was a divine appointment of her coming into my life
and contribute many of the accomplishments over
the past year because of the feedback and freedom
she constantly provided. Thank you, Dr. Rob
Chenoweth for being a solid and consistent voice
of reason to our society. Your input is so helpful and
greatly appreciated! To the remaining members of
the IKDDS Board, THANK YOU! You guided
me, listened, and showed me the true spirit of
serving. It is wonderful to be led by people who
truly care about making a positive change.
This year greets me with excitement and a little bit
of nervousness. My first year had a sense of
regrouping and reorganizing. Now, we look at
building and refining. I will need your help
even more this year because we have BIG
goals. We are looking at our committees and
wanting to make the membership more engaged. If
there is an area that you are interested with
stepping up in, please reach out. We don’t expect
perfection, just a willingness to serve.
Please know that I will try to continue to make
myself available for you and that I’m always a
phone call or email away.

the need was there. To be involved is a good
thing because if you’re not on the table,
you’ll be on the menu. I wish others would
become more involved. As our population
changes and becomes more diverse, we need
representation to reflect the diversity. I
would encourage everyone to attend
the meetings and support the organi-
zation. If there is something that comes up
that you have an interest in and you want to
do, do it and support the organization be-
cause that will help everybody.
What do you recommend we do to
bring more voices to the table?
You need the voices and the numbers. The
number of African Americans and other
minorities applying to dental school is drop-
ping. That is a problem. My daughter used
to sit on the admissions committee at IU
and saw that some other schools offered
more financial assistance to encourage mi-
norities to apply out of state. This leads to a
fewer minorities applying to local dental
schools and going out of state.
You shared how Dr. Schmidt encour-
aged and mentored you while serving
on the board. Do you feel that is what
is needed to encourage others to step
up?
We look in the mirror and we get different
perspectives of ourselves. We don’t know
what other people’s perspective is and when
they see something in you that you may not
see in yourself, that gives you encourage-
ment to do something. That’s the way it was
with Dr. Schmidt. Most of the time when he
saw me, he asked, “Wayne, are you ready?”
You finally reach a point where you’re as
ready as you’re going to get. Knowing him
and respecting him as much as I did, his
encouragement meant a lot. He saw some-
thing in me that I didn’t see in myself.
I needed to either find it or prove to
him that I didn’t have it in the begin-
ning.
After serving on IKDDS board, what
led you to decide to step up in leader-
ship at the IDA level and serve on the
Membership Committee.
I didn’t decide to go for it, I was told to do it.
Joking aside, there again, you have people
who care about you, support you, and re-
spect you. When they ask you to do some-
thing, it’s hard to say no. So when Dr Ellin-
wood asked me to do it, I said “No prob-
lem.” I’m not the most outgoing person, so
when people persist and ask you enough,
you say agree to do it. If you see someone
who has potential, don’t give up on them.
IU put a report out last year that
showed areas in Indiana that are un-
derserved in dentistry. Your office
sets in the heart of one of the under-
served areas. What would you suggest
to those interested with serving those
areas?
I’m one of the few Medicaid dentists
around, and with reason. The program
doesn’t pay out. No doubt, there is still a
need for that population to be treated. I feel
some obligation to the community
around me to make sure I serve the
people who really need to be treated
because they aren’t going go to differ-
ent areas of the city because they can’t
get there. The community has been sup-
portive of me the last 35 years, but there still
is a need to serve those populations. It’s
important to understand that a lot of the
people who are on those programs are not
on them because they don’t want to do
things. It’s because stuff has happened and
they are in a position where they need help.
Not everybody is a deadbeat person looking
for a handout. Economic times are currently
not as good as they once were and there will
be more people who have that need.

IDA made histo-ry on Saturday, June 13, when it held its first remote House of Delegates meeting via a Zoom web con-ference. The meeting served as culmi-
nation of Dr. Steven Ellinwood’s year as president. Acknowledging that his year was disrupted, he stated his legacy will always be associated with the year of the COVID pan-demic. He extended his thanks to the IDA staff and also the COVID Task Force stating, “This group was instrumental in get-ting us over the hump and back into our offices. I will never be able to thank them enough for the burden they lifted from me and the IDA team.” Dr. David Wolf (IDDS) assumed his presi-dency at the close of the meeting. Dr. Steve Hollar (NC) advanced to President Elect, Dr. Jill Burns (EI) advanced to Vice President. Dr. Thomas Blake (IK) advanced to Vice President Elect. Dr. Rebecca De La Rosa (IDDS) was unopposed and will be the 2020-21 Speaker of the House. Dr. Jenny Neese (BH) was unopposed and will be the 2020-21 Vice Speaker.
Other actions of the House included: New members of the IDA delegation to the 2021 and 2022 ADA House of Delegates were elected: Drs. Lorraine Celis (NC), Steve Ellinwood (IK), Vanchit John (IDDS), Matt Kolkman (IK), Heather Maupin (IDDS), and Daron Sheline (NC) were elected to two-year terms; Dr. Mark Mihalo (NW) was elected to a one-year term for the 2021 meeting. The House approved a proposal that aligns IDA’s dues structure with changes made by the ADA in 2019. This reduces the graduated dues structure for new graduates from four to two years, and removes the 25 percent dues discount for Active Life Members. Peer Review and Well Being were des-ignated programs of the IDA Board of Trustees, moving them from subcommit-tees of the Dental Practice Committee and bringing them under direct oversight of the Board. The House voted to join the Coalition for Modernizing Dental Licensure, an organization that has the goals of replacing single encounter, procedure based license exams with modernized clinical assess-ments, and increasing licensure portability.
The House referred IDA’s existing policy on Best Management Practices for non-accredited dental assisting programs for additional study and a report to the 2021 House. The House also referred IDA’s exist-ing policy on Mid-Level Providers for additional study and a report back to the 2021 House. The House called for legislation that will allow teledentistry to be a reim-bursable service. The House called for legislation that will allow dentists to administer cer-tain vaccines. An amendment to the Constitution and Bylaws was passed that estab-lished Vice President Elect as an IDA officer.
