THE MAIN ELEMENTSof Beauty Retouching
Success in Beauty Photography begins in the pre-capture stage with the correct
choice of model with appropriate skin complexion skillful makeup and lighting
If you shoot and retouch your own images just like me I will recommend that you
focus on developing your photography and lighting skills first then your post-
production stage will become an enjoyable artistic activity that elevates your images
rather than a labor-intensive task of fixing the pre-capture mistakes

that can make or break your retouching results

BEAUTY PORTRAIT
According to Wikipedia A portrait is a painting photograph or
other artistic representation of a person in which the face
and its expression is predominant The intent is to display
the likeness personality and even the mood of the person
This means that your retouching should be as natural as
possible You may soften and minimize some aging signs
and skin imperfections but the goal is not to make the face
flawless rather to keep the subjectrsquos appearance looking as
realistic as possible while making the picture a little more

The difference between Commercial and Editorial
Beauty images is typically in their sole purpose - while in
Commercial Beauty the goal is simply to sell a product
Editorial imagery is all about an artistic expression
and exploration of beauty makeup and cosmetics by
creative professionals so the results do not have to be
as polished as in advertising
Stay observant and take mental notes on what degree
of perfection is considered adequate and is expected
in types of photography you are interested in
We often see absolutely flawless faces in Celebrity and
Commercial Beauty photography so retouching would
be the most time-consuming for these types of images
Fashion imagery is usually focused on garments
accessories and styling Often faces in them are
relatively far away from the camera and take
up a small part of the frame thus they require
less time for retouching skin and makeup given
everything was captured right in camera
These are general guidelines but how much
you should retouch in each specific job will
depend on
1 Your artistic style
2 Your clientrsquos expectations
3 The quality of the source material
4 Common viewerrsquos expectations as to how
perfect the details should be in a specific type
of image in your country or region
5 The output media
6 Your compensation for retouching work - per
hour per image or included in your photo shoot
fee

the main retouching tools amp techniques

Regardless of what Raw Converter you choose
to work in make sure you explore its functions
thoroughly
The goal is to take a file (or a set of virtual
copies of the file) with perfectly defined
highlights midtones and shadows as well as
pre-corrected colors to Photoshop for further
retouching So if you happened to slightly
under- or overexpose your shot try to fix that by
using the Basic sliders in your Raw Converter
Export a few variations of your shot from which
you will be able to mask out the ldquogoodrdquo parts
and combine them into one perfect PSD base
for your retouching

PREPARINGRaw File s
Donrsquot underestimate the power of the Raw file format There is so much
visual data in each of your Raw files that you can often fix imperfect lighting
and makeup by adjusting your image in a Raw Converter
ORIGINAL RAW CONVERSION FOR SKIN RAW CONVERSION FOR EYE MAKEUP
Add a new layer and work with the Healing Brush Spot Healing Brush and Clone Stamp
tool removing all of the smallest skin and makeup issues as well as flyaway and stray
hairs crossing the face Donrsquot rush zoom in very close and work with very small brushes
This is the main retouching technique that you need to master in order to perform
top quality skin retouching For this stage of the beauty retouching workflow my
recommendation is to do the opposite - zoom out and use midsize brushes as much as
possible
Train your eye to recognize correct skin tones so you are able to adjust colors in your
images without having to rely on numbers Keep an eye out for our new Beauty Retouching
video course where among other things we will cover working with colors
I try to avoid using the Liquify tool as much as possible But when I absolutely have to I do
it at the very end of my retouching keep the changes very subtle and compare the before

So how do you know what to retouch and how much time to invest into retouching an image
First you need to identify the purpose of the image yoursquore working on
BEAUTY PORTRAIT
According to Wikipedia A portrait is a painting photograph or
other artistic representation of a person in which the face
and its expression is predominant The intent is to display
the likeness personality and even the mood of the person
This means that your retouching should be as natural as
possible You may soften and minimize some aging signs
and skin imperfections but the goal is not to make the face
flawless rather to keep the subjectrsquos appearance looking as
realistic as possible while making the picture a little more
flattering
COMMERCIAL amp EDITORIAL BEAUTY
Commercial Beauty images are used to advertise and sell a
product or a service such as skincare products cosmetics
beauty supplies hair styling products perfumes jewelry
and etc Beauty retouching for commercial purposes is
about creating a perfect face pristine skin flawless makeup
However the more natural the resulting image looks the
higher quality of retouching it is considered to be Our job
is to make the face skin and makeup look flawless while
keeping the retouching itself invisible

The difference between Commercial and Editorial
Beauty images is typically in their sole purpose - while in
Commercial Beauty the goal is simply to sell a product
Editorial imagery is all about an artistic expression
and exploration of beauty makeup and cosmetics by
creative professionals so the results do not have to be
as polished as in advertising
Stay observant and take mental notes on what degree
of perfection is considered adequate and is expected
in types of photography you are interested in
We often see absolutely flawless faces in Celebrity and
Commercial Beauty photography so retouching would
be the most time-consuming for these types of images
Fashion imagery is usually focused on garments
accessories and styling Often faces in them are
relatively far away from the camera and take
up a small part of the frame thus they require
less time for retouching skin and makeup given
everything was captured right in camera
These are general guidelines but how much
you should retouch in each specific job will
depend on
1 Your artistic style
2 Your clientrsquos expectations
3 The quality of the source material
4 Common viewerrsquos expectations as to how
perfect the details should be in a specific type
of image in your country or region
5 The output media
6 Your compensation for retouching work - per
hour per image or included in your photo shoot
fee

retouching in various genres of photography

Studying Vs Practicing
When you are starting to learn retouching After you have learned the software and
the main retouching tools amp techniques
Shift your focus from learning more new material to actually
practicing more Practice is what will make you a better
retouching artist not knowing dozens of tricky techniques
that you may use once in a blue moon
Remember that most of retouching tasks in beauty and
portrait photography can be tackled with the simple
retouching tools and the Dodge amp Burn technique alone
There is no magic recipe

Regardless of what Raw Converter you choose
to work in make sure you explore its functions
thoroughly
The goal is to take a file (or a set of virtual
copies of the file) with perfectly defined
highlights midtones and shadows as well as
pre-corrected colors to Photoshop for further
retouching So if you happened to slightly
under- or overexpose your shot try to fix that by
using the Basic sliders in your Raw Converter
Export a few variations of your shot from which
you will be able to mask out the ldquogoodrdquo parts
and combine them into one perfect PSD base
for your retouching
Check out my 3-part article ldquoMy Beauty
Retouching Workflow Before Retouching Even
Beginsrdquo to see how I prepare my images for
retouching in Adobe Lightroom
I try to avoid using the Liquify tool as much as possible But when I absolutely have to I do
it at the very end of my retouching keep the changes very subtle and compare the before
and after stages very carefully

I try to avoid using the Liquify tool as much as possible But when I absolutely have to I do
it at the very end of my retouching keep the changes very subtle and compare the before
and after stages very carefully
