Monthly Ministry Highlight Get to Know the BLC Council

This month in getting to know the church council the focus is on Sandy Woodruff, Council Chair for Missions, and Art Holm, Council Chair for Property.

Sandy and her husband Jim joined Bethlehem in 2001, commuting to church and activities from the foothills above Boulder until 2014 when they moved to Longmont. Like so many others, Sandy thinks the two best things about our church are Pastor Mark and the congregation. At Bethlehem Sandy feels surrounded by “caring angels.”

As the council chair for Missions, she wants to inspire more people to volunteer whether it be to help serve lunch at the OUR Center, sign up for a Habitat Build Day, participate in a mission trip, join the quilting group, or jump in some other way.

A lifelong Lutheran, Sandy continues to feel comfortable with Lutheran theology and loves the hymns and liturgy. Landscape painting, mostly in oils, drives Sandy’s creative juices. She derives plenty of inspiration for painting on mountain walks or being anywhere with a mountain view. When not painting or hiking, Sandy might be found reading the Smithsonian magazine or a good novel, such as The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry.

Of course, love of family figures prominently in her life. Sandy and Jim, married 62 years, have five children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Frequent travelers, Woodruffs may journey to Israel and Petra Jordan.

Relative newcomers to Longmont, Art and wife Linda have been members of BLC for two years. Bethlehem’s people, the pastor, and the worship services had an immediate appeal, and Bethlehem became a church home for the Holms. Currently, Art leads property ministry while managing the sanctuary and east bathroom remodeling. New gutter installation is in progress as well as day to day facility maintenance.

Art grew up a Lutheran in Texas, Illinois, and Wisconsin. To Art, peace, cheer, and love are the mainstays of being Lutheran. So many activities model “God’s Work, Our Hands.” A member of the Kentucky mission trip in 2017, Art plans to participate in the 2018 service week in Houston. He participates in the Our Center meal serving, Dining for 8, First Fridays, Thanksgiving meal shuttle for the Our Center, Living Nativity, and other charities.

Art’s reading tastes are Christian-based; on his nightstand are the Bible and a daily reader as well as numerous American history books. He wants to get back into golf. He enjoys playing bridge and traveling, wanting to revisit Nepal someday. When he’s not doing something at church, you can find him helping out at his wife’s antique shop.

Pastor Peterson’s Pericopes

As my retirement approaches, it has become a time of lasts:

• My last confirmation class

• My last church council meeting

• My last Thursday Night Bible Study

• My last time to read Bible stories to the beautiful kids at Cornerstone Preschool

• My last worship service at the Peaks and the Atria

• My last jazz worship service

Before when I was changing calls, going to another church, those lasts were different. I knew I would have more meetings, more Bible studies, more worship services in that new place. However, this time around, they are really lasts.

Of course, there is some relief in that. I won’t miss all those meetings in the evenings. I won’t miss all the deadlines.

But I will miss the challenges, the interactions, the learning, and especially the people on those councils, committees, and Bible studies. I always tried to start those meetings with prayer, to remind those good folks and myself that we were doing the Lord’s work. We were being the body of Christ. It may be a budget meeting, but we were doing the Lord’s work in this place.

What I will miss the most is the gift of people opening their lives to their pastor, to this pastor. I never took that for granted. It was always a privilege and honor to hear those confessions, those tales of woe, and those smiles of joy. I hold those memories dear. I can’t tell you how many times your courage and your faith has been a witness to me.

As I said in my sermon today, “The Holy Spirit works through people, for people”. And many, many times, I witnessed the Holy Spirit working through you.

By the way…I “stole” that quote from Pastor Keith Prekker who will be your new Interim Pastor. I have so much respect for him. He will be a blessing for Bethlehem.

So…this is my last Star article.

Blessings, Pastor Peterson

Member’s Corner

Challenge to Church Council

By Greg Schumann

On confirmation Sunday, I was struggling to keep Zander on an even keel. He was very nervous about having to read his faith statement. He had already decided to shorten it and was trying to convince me that he simply was not going to do it. I was trying to come up with the right words, control his temper, and allow this to be a memorable experience for all.

I asked Zander if he had any idea what was going on inside Pastor Mark. Oblivious, he said, “No, why?” I said that Pastor Mark is going through a lot of lasts at the moment while trying not to let that show or affect anyone. This was his very last confirmation class he would teach and watch graduate. He has recently had his last Thursday night Bible study. Between now and June 10, he will continue to have last moments. Yet through all of this, he is trying to keep his composure, keep everyone upbeat, and keep everyone moving in a positive direction. Zander changed. The day got better, and all of the confirmands had an amazing experience.

As communion was ending, I was watching Pastor Mark organize the Credence table. Pretty much the same as always, chalices were placed (some with pacificator’s covering them), the bread was wrapped in linen, and all was carefully covered. (Anne would be proud.) I also noticed that Pastor Mark did the juice today. Normally, he does the bread, but not always. Some days he leads; some days he follows. Intentional or not, Pastor Mark was allowing the new, in this case Deaconess Sarah, to take the lead. Then it came to me—I felt a chill as the Holy Spirit came into me!

As tonight will be Pastor Mark’s last church council meeting before his retirement process begins, we should share communion together. We can share bread and wine; body and blood—share the Holy Spirit. As we break bread and each receives a piece with the words “the body of Christ give for you,” I want us to remember those moments when Pastor Mark has given to us: the sermons, the Bible teachings, the wisdom, the humor, the hard work, the knowledge to deal with the daily grind as well as the knowledge to continue to move forward and carry on.

As we pass the wine with the words “the blood of Christ shed for you,” I want us to remember what Pastor Mark has left for us. He has left us with hearts filled with love, minds filled with thought, memories filled with joy, eyes filled with the desire to seek, and thoughts of even greater things to come.

In a few short weeks, Pastor Mark will be retiring and leaving our congregation—not by choice, but by practicality. We, as the current church leaders, are being charged with beginning the process of finding a new Pastor. We are NOT finding a replacement for Pastor Mark, rather we are finding an enhancement. This is most definitely NOT a moment of out with the old and in with the new. It is a moment to be filled with the Holy Spirit. We are blessed to be a blessing. We shall stand strong, confident, and focused. All of our actions will be watched by others. Some will be scrutinized while others will be graciously accepted. With prayer, guidance, and inspiration we will keep Bethlehem moving forward and standing strong.

Amen.

Bethlehem’s Newly Crowned Taco King

One of our members Eric Kittelberger recently made waves when he went on a social media campaign to correct a glaring discrepancy at the local Sam’s Club, which was promoting tacos, even though the store had no taco shells available for purchase. His poignant remarks on Facebook caught the attention of many and brought about the change he was campaigning for. Not only does the Longmont Sam’s Club now sell taco shells, but Eric was also officially named Sam’s Taco King. Special thanks to Eric for this good service to the community. Let them eat tacos!

Tribute to Pastor Mark

By Jamie Jurkovich

Pastor Mark has changed how I think of pastors.

It was about four years ago when we first stepped foot inside the doors of Bethlehem, and admittedly our feet were dragging a bit. Trying a new church always comes with some level of uneasiness. And due to some of our past church experiences, we had a greater level of foreboding and even dread about what we might encounter inside these doors.

Very much to Bethlehem’s credit, we were welcomed warmly. And even though the worship culture and context were quite different from where we had been, it wasn’t too awkward for us to catch on. Pastor Mark even remembered our names after our first visit. However, it was on our third Sunday visiting, when Pastor Mark asked if he could pay us a call that we really had to do a double-take. I’m pretty certain we had him repeat himself two or even three times. The pastor wanted to visit us? In our experience, this was outside the context of what a pastor usually does. We agreed but figured it would either be a high-pressure recruitment strategy or else a veiled screening process.

Though neither is what happened. Pastor Mark was genuinely interested in our story and how we had landed at Bethlehem. He wasn’t offended by some of the difficult questions we asked him or even turned off by the suspicious volume of questions we had. We were pleasantly surprised to feel accepted and welcomed. It meant a lot.

Over the few short years that we’ve been here, Pastor Mark has changed how I see the role of a pastor from the lofty man in pulpit to the humble shepherd that isn’t afraid to meet people where they are. In his forty years of ministry, I’m sure that he has walked with many on their darkest roads and through their most difficult trials. He has been a steady example of faith on all those ordinary, unexceptional days when God doesn’t seem especially apparent. And he has shared in the congregation’s joy and celebrated with us in our life's sweetest moments.

In other words, he’s been doing life—just like us and with us—in all its varied terrain, but while offering us the steady gift of encouragement, hope, and grace. This simple consistent presence leaves quite a legacy. Pastor Mark, through your humble service, you have blessed us all. Eloquent sermons, kind visitations, even doing dishes in the church kitchen—we’ve seen you do all of this for us.

It is with the sincerest appreciation that we wish you every good thing in your retirement. You will be missed and remembered, but we rejoice with you as you have with us so many times.

Numbers 6:24-26: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Mission

Piggy Bank Collection Goal Met

Thanks to all who contributed to the Sunday School Piggy Bank collection project this year. The children were very faithful in bringing their money each week and through that generosity we exceeded our goal of $240 to raise $265.41 for a scholarship for Jose Medida Idaquez in Nicaragua for the upcoming school year. We are thrilled to be able to offer such an impactful gift.

Bike to Church OR Get a Car Wash Day

BIKE TO CHURCH DAY! Or bring your car, and the youth will wash it while you are in worship on Sunday, June 3. (And we hope you’ll donate to the ELCA Youth Gathering.)

In order to make an effort for caring for God’s earth and reducing emissions, we encourage you to take an alternative mode of transportation to worship this morning. If you are unable to do so, please consider allowing our youth to care for your vehicle by washing it and earning your donation toward their trip to Houston for the ELCA Youth Gathering.

How this works: If you ride your bike to church, great! Thank you for reducing emissions! If you do not ride your bike to church, as you pull into the parking lot, we will ask you if you would like your car washed. If you say yes, you will give the keys to an adult supervisor, go to worship, and the youth will wash your car while you worship. When you come out, you will get your keys to your sparkling clean car and the youth who lovingly washed your car will be happy to accept your donation. Thank you in advance!

Summer Softball Fans

The BLC Summer Softball season is right around the corner, and we’d love to have some fans come out to support us at our games. Unfortunately, the game schedule is highly volatile and changes frequently. However, if you’re interested in cheering us along, please ask Deaconess Kristen ([email protected]) to add you to the email update list to receive notification about the time and date of the upcoming games. You can also follow the BLC Member’s Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/groups/BLCLongmontMembers) for updates as well.

Bathroom Remodel Update

The bathroom remodel is moving right along. The small amount of asbestos that was found in the wall texture has been safely removed. We had a great team of volunteers who helped clean out janitor closets to relocate supplies and furniture to facilitate the remodel work. We were also able to give bathroom tile and pew cloth to Habitat for Humanity. Unfortunately, the noisy part of the project has begun—cement and floor removal, but it won’t be much longer now. Thank you for your patience and support.

Thank You

Words cannot express the profound gratitude we have for the embracing support of our church family. Meals, hugs, cards, funeral arrangements and serving, communion serving, words of condolence, taking us for walks, tea and meals, memorial gifts, presence at John's funeral, singing, choir anthems, public words of remembrance, words of wisdom for times of grief—just to name a few of the many ways we have been and continue to be held and supported through this challenging grief process. God's spirit moves through each and every one of you and surrounds us, reminding us of His love. You are all a blessing.

~Cathy, Racheal, and the entire Goodman Family Office Helpers: Betty Bluhm, Mary Fjeld, Jenny Kelly, Nancy McLeod, Doris Slinger, Sue Smith, and Shirley Wayne
