BPHS Students Win At German Day Competition Bethel Park High School German students won three First Place, two Second Place and two Third Place Awards at the 2017 German Day Competition at Washington and Jefferson College, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German. BPHS students won more awards than any of the 12 schools competing.

BPHS Students Earn Extra Effort Award At Steel Center

Four Bethel Park High School students earned the Extra Effort Award for the third quarter of the 2016-2017 school year from the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education.

Cassandra Biancaniello Inducted Into National Technical Honor Society

Bethel Park High School junior Cassandra Biancaniello was one of 13 area students who were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society at the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education. Cassandra is a student in the Cosmetology Program at Steel Center.

BPHS Students Participate In Youth Action Sessions

At Disability Fair

Bethel Park High School students Duncan Warner, Brennan Carrozza, Andrew Dixon, Jessica Greene, Shyhyelle Jones, Luke Snyder, Giovanni Bernardi and Nolan Rosemeier participated in Influence to Youth Action Sessions at the Disability Summit. They were able to:

• Meet students from other school districts;

• Participate in self-advocacy activities;

• Learn how to network with potential employers at the Employment and Transition Fair;

• Interact with elected officials.

Ceramics Students Make Bowls To Help Feed The

Hungry

A group of Bethel Park High School Ceramics students made bowls and donated them to the Empty Bowls Dinner, a fundraiser that benefits the work being done by Just Harvest and the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank to feed the hungry in the area.

Making the bowls were: Taysean Boyd-Williamson, Natalie Brandt, Abby Collavo, Caroline Colligan, Maddie Condie, Elena DeFelice, Jake Diel, Hannah Fleming, Lori Gatz, Dylan Lauritzen, Jorge Llanos, Damien Maclay, Steph Marfisi, Danika Moody, Mike Musciano, Madison Ottaviano, Leah Sanpietro and Rachel Wolff.

Carolyn Cook Represents BPHS At SHASDA Student Forum

Bethel Park High School senior Carolyn Cook represented BPHS at the SHASDA Student Forum at Upper St. Clair High School, sponsored by the South Hills Area School Districts Association. Carolyn joined representatives from all SHASDA-member high schools to share experiences and to discuss issues.

Five Bethel Park High School vocalists were selected to sing in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s All-State Chorus, which will perform in April at the PMEA State Conference in Erie, PA.

Bethel Park High School musicians Bruce Deal (tuba) and Joe Mueser (trumpet) successfully auditioned and have been selected to play in the PMEA All-State Band, which will perform at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s State Conference in Erie in April.

Three BPHS Musicians

Selected For All-State Orchestra

Bethel Park High School musicians Emily Cowser (Viola), Ethan Tabler (Cello) and Jenelle Wu (Violin) successfully auditioned and will represent Bethel Park in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association’s All-State Orchestra, which will perform at the PMEA’s annual conference in April in Erie, PA.

BPHS Band And Orchestra Musicians Work With Professional And Collegiate Musicians

Bethel Park High School Orchestra Musicians had the pleasure of working with Dr. Mark Laycock, Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras at Wichita State University, when he was in Pittsburgh for a conference. Bethel Park High School Orchestra and Symphonic Band Musicians had the pleasure of attending a performance by the Baldwin-Wallace University Orchestra in the BPHS auditorium, followed by some side-by-side experiences with the collegiate musicians. These experiences were possible because both Orchestra Directors were aware of the quality of BPHS musicians and wanted to work with our students when they were in town.

BPHS Drama Club Students Help Elementary Students To ‘Feed The Need To Read’

Bethel Park High School Drama Club students made the rounds of the District’s elementary schools to help students to kick off Read Across America Day or their Accelerated Reader Programs, with a new version of “Feed the Need to Read,” an original production of skits and songs, featuring some of the younger students’ favorite story book characters, including The Cat in the Hat, Captain Underpants, Fly Guy and Munch the Moose!

Varsity Hockey Team Skates With Adaptive

Physical Education Students

For the 17th consecutive year, members of the Bethel Park High School Varsity Hockey Team spent an hour at the Spencer Family YMCA teaching Adaptive Physical Education Students at Washington and Neil Armstrong how to ice skate.

Following the skate, everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch together.

The Adaptive PE students thanked the hockey players by making them banners to cheer them on in the Penguin Cup Playoffs.

Winter Sports 2017 Recap

CHEERLEADING

• State Champions in the Small Varsity Category.

WRESTLING

• Nino Bonaccorsi finished in Second Place at the PIAA State Wrestling Championships.

• Nino Bonaccorsi is the WPIAL and Section Champion at 182 pounds.

• Hunter Kernan is the Section Champion at 145 pounds.

• Jason Montgomery finished in Seventh Place at the State Wrestling Championships at 160 pounds.

• Nino Bonaccorsi won the prestigious Powerade Wrestling Tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL • WPIAL Runners-Up. • Participated in the PIAA State Playoffs . SWIMMING AND DIVING • Sadie Coda finished in 10th Place at the WPIAL

Diving Championships. • 11 Swimmers qualified for the WPIAL Swimming

Championships. HOCKEY • Qualified for the Penguin Cup Playoffs.

INLINE HOCKEY • The Varsity Team are the PIRHL Champions.

IMS Students Compete At Fluid Power

Challenge

Two teams of Independence Middle School students competed at the Fluid Power Challenge, where they were tasked with building a hydraulic arm that could move the greatest number of cylinders in two minutes.

The team of Jane Baronak, Demetrios Patrinos, Toby Roule and Jon Traud won the award for Best Teamwork.

Memorial Third Grader Wins District Spelling Bee

Memorial Third Grader Andre Abeskharon won the Fifth Annual Bethel Park School District Third Grade Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bethel Park.

Andre defeated 71 other spellers to win a $350 Toys R Us Gift Card and the opportunity to represent the Bethel Park Rotary Club at the Rotary’s District Spelling Bee to be held at Seven Springs in June.

Finishing in Second Place and earning a $200 Toys R Us Gift Card was Franklin Third Grader Bryleigh Burke. Franklin Third Grader Cayleigh Shannon finished in Third Place and received a $100 Toys R Us Gift Card.

Lincoln Students Wear Crazy Socks To Show

Support For Down Syndrome

Lincoln students commemorated World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 by wearing crazy socks to school.

The socks symbolized their commitment to raise awareness and tolerance for individuals with disabilities.

Teachers incorporated activities such as drawing, reading a story or watching a short video about disabilities to foster a culture of respect, tolerance and acceptance.

First Graders Enjoy Dr. Seuss-Themed

STEAM Activities

First Graders in Mrs. Clancy’s room at Franklin Elementary School enjoyed participating in a variety of Dr. Seuss-themed STEAM activities, including making oobleck after reading Bartholomew and the Oobleck, doing science experiments with a green egg made from baking soda after reading Green Eggs and Ham, and making a hat for The Cat in the Hat out of plastic cups and note cards.

Students also enjoyed a variety of language arts activities including reading, rhyming and phonics practice.

BPHS STAND Students Make New Friends At

Washington

Bethel Park High School students who are members of STAND (Standing Together Against Negativity and Discrimination) visited Washington Elementary First Grade Classrooms to read stories to the students and to talk to them about friendship, kindness and making good choices. They also answered the students’ questions about how to correctly handle difficult situations they may encounter on the playground, bus or with friends.

Penn Students Get

Inspired To Be Problem Solvers

Penn students were inspired to create solutions to real-world problems during their time in the Library, by using LittleBits and other STEAM/STEM learning activities.

The project began with the reading of the story, “What Do You Do With An Idea?” and the students worked together using the STEAM materials to explore through inventive activity.

They learned that they have the power to become scientists, engineers and problem solvers!
