Rise Up Together! ELCA National Youth Gathering ~ 2015 ~ Detroit, Michigan

As you can tell by the quotes from our youth and leaders, the trip to Detroit was

meaningful and energizing. In fact, the group has already planned three events to get our youth

from our three congregations together so we can all be inspired by what happened in Detroit!

We want to keep the energy going and find ways to continue to do God’s work in our own

neighborhoods.

This year, our group was able to clean up two abandoned lots in an otherwise

beautiful neighborhood of Detroit. Several neighbors stopped by to talk with and thank the

youth for their hard work and energy. (continues)

“Detroit was awesome and was lots of fun.

We grew closer to God and as a youth group.”

~ Gabe Chovan-Spence

“Being in a building with 30,000 youth all

there for the same reason, which was to

do God’s work, was truly amazing. I’ve

never felt that way before.” ~ Matt Psick

“Our trip to Detroit was very inspiring.

My favorite part was always being

around 30,000 of your closest family

whom you’ve never actually met.”

~Jessica Alberts

“The trip to Detroit was very fun and also very humbling. It was great to be able to spend

time with the kids in my youth group, and seeing/working on the abandon homes made me

value my life at home much more. I am definitely glad I went on the trip.” ~Josi Alberts

“The youth gathering was one of the most spiritual

experiences of my life. It felt great helping people

in need and praising God at the same time.

Life changing.” ~Nick “Big Wiz” Krogh

“Detroit was inspiring, eye-opening, and overall amazing. It made me realize my values

and hopes for the future and gave be the courage to find my call to do God’s work.”

The two houses on those lots will eventually be demolished and the city will complete the clean up to get it the

lot ready to sell for new homes to be built. Our bus load of youth did a great job in cleaning up this area and could have

done more cleanup had time allowed. We found hope in knowing that we were one of thousands of youth groups making a

difference in Detroit.

The evenings in Detroit were spent in Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions NFL football team. During those

evenings we prayed, heard motivational speeches, sang praise songs, listened to various musical groups, danced, and

thanked God. The “building bridges” night was especially memorable with Pr Jerbi, Motown music, and a closing that brought

tears and cheers to our lives with a 10-year old singing “Love Can Build a Bridge.” That was an incredible night!

On Sunday morning, sharing Holy Communion with 30,000 other Lutherans was overwhelming and wonderful.

It is amazing to me that we were all served communion while only singing three hymns. We were served two rows at a time

and by hundreds of serving stations that moved throughout Ford Field. Indeed, the body and blood of our Lord was shared in

earnest by all present.

Learn more about this trip by talking with our participants, looking at the Bethel Facebook Page, watching

some videos at www.elca.org/youthgathering, and coming to our presentation about this event on Sunday, October 4th at

9:15 am in Nazareth Hall. We will likely rap for you again!

Thank you for all your support and prayers! With you, for Christ!

School bags School bags are urgently requested from Lutheran World Relief (LWR). School bags are sewn from sturdy cloth and filled with basic school supplies. Earlier this year LWR supplied school bags to 6550 Syrian refugee children. Each bag contains: 4 70-sheet spiral notebooks 1 30 centimeter ruler 1 pencil sharpener 1 blunt scissor 5 unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers 5 blue or black ballpoint ink pens 1 box of 16 or 24 crayons 1 2 ½ eraser How many bags can we sew and fill with requested school supplies? Currently 26 bags are sewn, 15 more are in process. Anyone wanting to sew bags can contact Sharon Rodi or the LWR website for in-structions. (http://lwr.org/schoolkits) The bags will be filled with school supplies on Sunday, September 13. School supplies and bags can be brought to Bethel anytime. Check Bethel’s website where the number of school supplies needed will be posted each week. Another option is to make a donation using the Special Offering Envelope. How many bags can we sew and fill? 50? 70? 100?

Music at Bethel Bulletin Board I would like to use this space to let everyone know what is happening at Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church. If anyone has any questions or suggestions regarding the music at Bethel, please feel free to contact Hsu-hui at [email protected] or call at 612-724-3693. Please mark on your calendar: August 2: Pick-up Choir August 9: Outdoor worship at Minnehaha Falls at 10:30 am (along with 4 other neighboring churches). August 30: Hymn Sing Service

Reflections from the Montreat Conference First of all, I want to thank Bethel Lutheran Church for sponsoring me to attend the Montreat Worship & Music Conference in Montreat, NC, a week long event in June. It was a great educational experience I will not forget. I learned many new ideas from the conference and would like to incorporate some of them into our worship service someday. The theme of the conference was “You Are My Beloved”, and the lectionary readings were covered from Advent through the Transfiguration for the daily worship. Different classes were offered to all age groups, from preschool through the adults; from lay leaders to the pastors and everyone in between. Classes included the Bible Study, different levels of musical groups (choral, handbells and instrumental), liturgical drama, and more. What struck me the most was the daily worship. I was surprised how much I was looking forward each day to the worship. From the aesthetic displayed in the worship space, to the hymn singing, to the scripture reading/acting, to the sermon and the communion, everything was well planned and presented. With each dif-ferent daily theme, the esthetic changed accordingly. The giant hanging banners were the first thing I saw when I entered the worship space--a dark blue curtain in the background with the cut out white banners hanging in front of it; elegant and yet simple. As an example of the cohesive and multi-dimensional worship, on the day of the Epiphany theme, the hymn “We Three Kings” was woven with the scripture reading from Matthew and the procession of the wise men. Between each verse, there was a dramatic reading and acting of the scripture from the Three Kings, then the congregation sang the verse while the Star of David lead the Three Kings in search of the baby Jesus. The hymn was not just for singing anymore. To those who were there, this hymn became a story tell-ing, a journey of searching; and most of all, we were within the story and witnesses to the story simultane-ously. What a powerful experience! Have you noticed the Suggestion Box in the Narthex?

Give us your thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions and solutions!

Here, in our very own Sanctuary:

the floor is beginning to be sanded.

It will get worse before it gets better.

But when it gets done,

you are going to love it.

Through the combination of visual art, theatrical application and music, the worshipers received the message not just from the sermon, but also through the hymns, scripture reading, spoken words, even during the moment of the communion. Every step was connected. After each worship, I felt I had a feast, spiritually and emotionally. My wish for you is that I hope you will have a similar experience someday--feeling that your spirit has been fed with a big feast. Joyfully, Hsu-hui

Board of AdministratorsBoard of AdministratorsBoard of AdministratorsBoard of Administrators I recently read this quote “There is space for everyone.” There are so many opportunities for you to take part in the life at Bethel. Take a look around and see where your interests are and share your talents. You are needed and appreciated. There are many projects being worked on during the summer. The parking lot has been repaired and resurfaced. The sanctuary face lift is well underway. The old pews have been removed. They have found a new home at another church. The floors have been resurfaced and carpeting in the chancel area is ready to be installed. The new seating is being built and we are ready for the new look. Soon the water garden project will get started. Exciting times are happening at Bethel. Signage for the Labyrinth will be installed soon. Please stop by and see what has been created. Thank you to Bryan Entzel for sharing his talents in creating the signs. Your Board of Administrators continues to keep busy working on many projects during the summer. Should you have any suggestions on projects you would like us to address please let us know.
