I’ve been a rabbi for almost 26 years now, and, sometimes I find myself thinking that I know everything there is to know about the rabbinate. But then, a community like yours comes around, and I realize that I’ve still got a lot to learn. This has happened here in Baton Rouge, for during the months I’ve been here, the members of Beth Shalom have helped me identify where the power of the rabbinate truly lies. When I was a little boy, I thought that the rabbi’s greatest power was in his hands. After all, all my rabbi needed to do was to turn his palms upward and say “Please rise,” and, just like that, a thousand people would all stand up in unison. Later, as a teenager, I came to think that the source of the rabbi’s power was in his or her “coolness.” That’s because at regional and local youth events, I saw plenty of cool young rabbis sit down with small groups of teens, and say “Don’t call me Rabbi Goldenson, call me Dave.” Then they’d proceed to get those teens to talk about things that were really important to them. When I became a rabbi myself, I came to think that the rabbi’s power was in his ability to teach and inspire. Wasn’t that what the communities I served had hired me to do? True enough. But here, I’ve realized that, at least in communities like this one, the rabbi has an even more powerful tool – the telephone call. Yes, I can teach up a storm. I can also organize a meeting, and visit the sick, and preach until I’m blue- in-the-face when asked to do so. But when I make single telephone calls – ah, here at least, that’s where the magic happens. Here at Beth Shalom, all I need to do is make a single phone call, and a sick person gets visitors at the hospital. Here at Beth Shalom, all I need to do is make a single phone call, and an elaborate spread of goodies shows up at a shiva minyan. Here, all I need to do is make a single phone call, and gift baskets show up to places where they are needed most. This, of course, says nothing about me and my own abilities, but it says everything about you. Beth Shalom, in other words, is the kind of community that has its Jewish values in the right place. It’s the kind of community that always stands poised to do what’s right and what’s holy. It’s the kind of community in which a rabbi is set up for success at every turn. Beth Shalom is, in other words, truly a kehillah kedoshah, a sacred community doing sacred work at every turn. We can always do better, of course, but for now, you’re doing really, really well. You’ve shown me all that a community can do 9111 Jefferson Highway Baton Rouge, LA 70809-2496 225-924-6773 Rabbi Mark Glickman President Mark Hausmann 1st Vice Pres. Michelle Levy 2nd Vice Pres. Dear Beth Shalom Synagogue Congregants,Please accept this as the first of many correspondences between us, and the first since I was chosen to be your newest rabbi. For those of you who I did not meet last month, my name is Natan Trief. I am finishing my 5th year of rabbinical school in just a few weeks, and am beyond ecstatic and honored to be serving your congregation beginning in August. The placement process was an intense and action-packed time, all the more so because I am also married to a soon-to-be rabbi, going through the same process. Her name is Samantha, and for those of you who have not met her yet, she is definitely my better half, and can’t wait to meet y’all. After an intense few days, Sam decided to accept an assistant rabbi position in Atlanta. Though it was very difficult for me, I supported her, and decided we would move to Atlanta. Thankfully, with the help of the Beth Shalom Synagogue search committee and board, we were still able to find a compromise, a solution that honors and sustains the strong bond that I felt toward your community. I would like to be very clear about something at the outset. I consider myself your full-time rabbi. Though I will not be on-site in Baton Rouge all of the time, I will be working remotely and available all the time. In this age of technology, that will not be difficult and I look forward to finding and exploring new ways of developing this relationship. Whether that is a phone call, a Skype-class, or any other number of options, we will always be in touch. I know that many of you still may have some concerns about how this arrangement will work. In order to address them, please allow me to briefly mention two of my biggest passions as rabbi: Prayer and Pastoral care. Prayer: I cannot wait to learn your needs and desires as a

Communication from Natan Triefcommunity, and help lead prayer in Baton Rouge. Prayer is an important part of my life, and as soon as I sat in services at Beth Shalom Synagogue, I knew that we would be a great fit. I was so impressed with your passion and your literacy, and I look forward to working with Joel, the ritual committee, and everyone else to continue to develop and enhance the worship experience. Thankfully, there is a strong group of congregants who can help lead services in my absence. A prayer leader’s name in Hebrew is a shaliach tsibur, something that roughly translates to public messenger. This “messenger’ need not be a rabbi. Anyone can lead services and I can assure you it is a tremendous and meaningful experience. My passion is to work with all of you, empowering you to be leaders of your own community. Thus, even when I’m not there on some Shabbatot, you will be in good hands. Thankfully, we have worked out a calendar that enables me to be with you on all Jewish holidays as well.Pastoral Care: I view this as my primary obligation and responsibility as a rabbi. Please know that I am always just a phone call away, even when I am not in Baton Rouge. In the event of any life-cycle emergencies, I will be on the first plane or car over. As I said above, I will be your full time rabbi, and am so honored to fill that role. These two passions are only a couple of the reasons I chose this path in life. I cannot wait to get to know each of you individually, and learn about what motivates and drives you in this world. Together, we will embark on a journey of exploration, study, prayer, and growth. Most importantly, we will strengthen our own sense of belonging and community, something that I already view as one of Beth Shalom’s greatest strengths. With gratitude and excitement,Your rabbi, Natan

Helping a Refugee FamilyRefugee and Immigration Services of Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge and the Baton Rouge Jewish Taskforce on Immigration are asking for Beth Shalom’s help for a refugee family that arrived in Baton Rouge on Thursday April 28. The family, a single-mom and her three children, fleeing the Congo has suffered unimaginable hardships. Now they have an opportunity to live peacefully without the threat of violence or persecution.Arriving with very few belongings, they were taken to an apartment provided through Catholic Charities. Beth Shalom members donated items and helped set up the apartment with basic necessities (sheets, pillows, towels, kitchen items, cleaning supplies, alarm clocks, etc).During this family’s transition to life in Baton Rouge,

Catholic Charities will provide many additional services to them, including language training, social and medical services, counseling, & job placement. But there are so many more needs that this family will have as they settle into their new life. Volunteers and continued donations are essential. If you are able to assist this family, then please contact Julie Hoffman at 225-229-5645 or [email protected] just celebrated Pesach, we ask that you walk in the footsteps of the One who delivered our people from bondage by taking action to welcome this family not as strangers but as fellow human beings.

In early April I had the honor of participating in the 18th Annual Scheidt Seminar in Peachtree City, Georgia with 110 URJ synagogue presidents from across the country.Learning from and with the leaders of the Reform Jewish Movement, including URJ President, Rabbi Rick Jacobs was invaluable. Sessions on synagogue governance, leadership, finances and fundraising were pertinent, and Shabbat worship was innovative and meaningful. Very wisely, the seminar planners included plenty of opportunity to networking to allow us to share our congregational successes and challenges with each other. Finding commonality with other synagogue presidents was not a challenge. It was reassuring to discover that about one quarter of the congregations represented were in the process of a recent or upcoming rabbinic transition.Being introduced to the many URJ resources that exist to enhance our Beth Shalom community was one of the

highlights of the seminar. The most significant of those resources, with respect to our upcoming transition, is the Had’rachah Seminar for Lay Leadership in Ritual Life — a four day program at the URJ Camp OSRUI in Wisconsin. Beth Shalom is fortunate to have secured 2 of the 20 available spots for this very sought after experience. Joel Goldman and Gus Levy have graciously agreed to attend the program, so that they can help us to maximize our potential during those alternate weeks when Rabbi Trief is in Atlanta.Beth Shalom is strong thanks to the leadership of members like Joel and Gus, and the support and resources of the URJ.

April was an adventurous month as we celebrated Passover and Rayner hosted its school wide Passover Seder on April 28th. All who attended had a wonderful time. In April, we learned about dinosaurs, plants, ABCs and 123s, science activities, Jewish values and manners, colors and shapes, and Pesach. The themes were explored through song, stories, and art.We had parent teacher conferences the week of April 11th. Our families and friends enjoyed a schoolwide picnic on Wednesday, April 20th. We also received a visit from the Baton Rouge Police Mounted Police on April 21st, which our children thoroughly enjoyed, and an educational visit from the dentist on April 22nd. The month of May will be full of excitement for the Rayner Learning Center as well. We will gain knowledge of different aspects of Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Mother’s Day, marine life, ABCs and 123s, Jewish values and manners, colors and shapes, and a science activity. Students will also complete an End of the Year project. We will be celebrating Teacher’s Appreciation Week for our lovely teachers and staff throughout the week of May 9th. On Thursday, May 26th the Alfred G. Rayner Learning Center will host its “Moving On Ceremony” for our Pre-K class at 7:00 p.m. We ask that the families join us in making this a special and unforgettable event.Todah RabbahRabbi Glickman, Steven Winkler, Rayner Center Council, Beth Shalom’s Board Members, Cathy MelansonA thank you to all of Beth Shalom congregates for all of their love and support!

Greetings fromTheRayner Center

when it devotes itself to holy work, you’ve shown me the great things that a rabbi can achieve when serving such a community. And you’ve shown me how easy synagogue success can be when a congregation lines itself up just right. And additionally, you’ve also shown me that sometimes, the rabbi’s greatest power is to be found in his or her simple ability to make a phone call.

Rabbi Mark Glickman

Rabbi’s Message (con’t)

BrotherhoodBy the time this column appears, the Synagogue will have hired its new Rabbi, Natan Trief. He appears to be very knowledgeable in Torah and Judaism, and I am sure everyone who has met him agrees, is very personable. His relative youth should work in our favor in retaining our twenty- and thirty-somethings and attracting more of them.We are all looking forward to his leadership moving our Synagogue forward to being even better than we are already. The Brotherhood has formally presented to the Board the Mission Statement plaque and it should be installed by the time you read this column. Look for it on the wall by Cathy’s office just inside the main Synagogue doors.Gary Baum

RegaRding Hospital Visits

Our Rabbi is eager to keep in touch with members of the congregation who are in the hospital or recuperating at home. As recent legislation prevents hospitals from circulating patient’s names, we rely on you to call the synagogue office and let us know when you, a family member or friend are in the hospital and would welcome a visit from Rabbi Glickman.

May He who blessed our ancestors grant all who are ill

a complete and speedy recovery.Joanne Kleiman
