Beth Hillel is an egalitarian Conservative synagogue rooted in the ancient traditions of the Torah while growing to meet the changes and challenges of our world. Its core are the many people of different ages and backgrounds who have chosen to make it their spiritual home, joining together for prayer, learning, and celebration. The many branches of Beth Hillel’s community provide support to its congregants, reaching out to each other and welcoming our neighbors as together we learn from the past and teach for the future.

From Rabbi Atkins’ Desk Early in April, at a
Friday night service, we
had as a guest speaker
Michal Abramoff, who is
a shalicha, a
representative of Israel,
for our Greater Hartford
Jewish community. She is a
knowledgeable and capable young
woman, well able to present
information and inspiring teachings
on Israel today. It was a wonderful
presentation by our Israel Affairs
Committee, headed by Leon Carr.
Throughout the year, Michal has
been working towards the
community-wide celebration of Yom
HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence
Day. The exact day on the Hebrew
calendar is the 5th of Iyar, but when
that falls on a Friday, as it does this
year, the observance is moved
forward one day to avoid the
celebration running into Shabbat. So
the day for celebrating is actually
Iyar 4, May 12th. Let me review with
you the basic facts re the birth of
Israel:
On May 14, 1948, the fifth day of
the month of Iyar on the Jewish
calendar, Jewish leaders gathered in
Tel Aviv to sign the Declaration of
the Establishment of the State of
Israel—Israel's Declaration of
Independence.
This extraordinary document states,
"By virtue of our natural and historic
right and on the strength of the
resolution of the United Nations
General Assembly, [we] hereby
declare the establishment of a
Jewish state in Eretz-Israel, to be
known as the State of Israel."
With this bold declaration, the
modern State of Israel was born. And
so it is that every year at this time
Israel Independence Day is
observed. Yom HaAtzmaut, as it is
known in Hebrew, is a day of
jubilation—a day for Jews to mark
the re-establishment of their
sovereign nation after generations of
exile, and to celebrate the history
and accomplishments of the modern
State of Israel.
From the very beginning, Israel
extended a hand of friendship to
neighboring states, encouraging
them, as Israel's Declaration of
Independence puts it, to "establish
bonds of cooperation and mutual
help with the sovereign Jewish
people." Despite this, most of
Israel's neighbors still do not
recognize the Jewish state. Some, in
fact, are preparing themselves for
the day that they can, in the words of
the Iranian president, "wipe Israel off
the map."
Even in the West, with its values
of democracy and personal liberty —
values fully embraced by Israel —
her legitimacy is routinely
questioned in academic circles, on
newspaper op-ed pages, and even in
some churches. Almost seventy
years after its birth, it seems Israel is
still the only nation on earth that is
continually called on to justify its
existence.
For Israelis and friends of Israel—
indeed, for any fair-minded person
who values democracy and
freedom—Israel Independence Day
should be, first and foremost, a day
for celebration. On this day, let's
thank God for a nation that stands as
a beacon of democracy in the midst
of authoritarian regimes… for a
nation where every day scientific
and technological advances are
made that benefit the entire world…
While Israel's Arab neighbors
reacted with hostility to the founding
of the Jewish state, the U.S. became
the first nation to recognize Israel. I
like to remember that the man
primarily responsible for this was a
devoted Christian—President Harry
S. Truman.
In Truman's administration, there
were those who spoke forcefully
against U.S. recognition of the new
Jewish state. One of these, Secretary
of State James Forrestal, summed
up this viewpoint by saying, "There
are thirty million Arabs on one side
and about six hundred thousand
Jews on the other. It is clear that in
any contest, the Arabs are going to
overwhelm the Jews. Why don't you
face up to the realities? Just look at
the numbers!"
Harry Truman was not without
his faults. He occasionally displayed
in his private correspondence some
of the anti-Semitic prejudices that
were all too prevalent at that time.
But, ultimately, it is to his everlasting
credit that, as far as the right of
Israel to exist was concerned,
Truman was unimpressed by "the
numbers."
In his memoirs, Clark Clifford,
who was special counsel to Truman,
remembers Truman's strong
counterpoint to Forrestal's position:
"From [Truman's] youth, he had
detested intolerance and
discrimination. He had been deeply
moved by the plight of the millions
of homeless of World War II, and felt
that alone among the homeless, the
Jews had no homeland of their own
to which they could return."
Truman never regretted his
decision to recognize the Jewish
state—a move he took just eleven
minutes after Israel declared its
independence. "I had faith in Israel
before it was established, I have faith
in it now," he said in 1952. "I believe
it has a glorious future before it—not
just another sovereign nation, but as
an embodiment of the great ideals of
our civilization."
The Mandell JCC has printed a
beautiful brochure describing the
many activities planned the week of
May 8-15. Copies are available either
online or at the Synagogue. I invite
you to

The President’s Column
Over the last few months, Beth Hillel has had some setbacks. Our first set back was the announcement of Rabbi Atkins retiring on June 30, 2016. Although we will miss Rabbi Atkins as he enjoys his retirement, we as a synagogue must move forward. Our rabbi search committee has completed all the necessary paper work and submitted the materials to the Rabbinical Assembly. I am happy to say that we have already received some resumes. The committee will be reviewing the resumes and setting up interviews. The second setback is that our computer system crashed. Since that fateful day, the system has been running well one day, and then down the next. As I write this, the computers are being worked on and hopefully the problem will be solved. I would like to personally apologize for any inconveniences that may have occurred. Our third setback was that the sale of our building to The Word Empowerment Ministries fell through. The bank who issued the financing, with a contingency, has pulled the financing. Apparently, the church was unable to meet
the contingency. I am still in touch with another church that showed an interest in our building. Even with this latest setback, our Future Planning Committee is still moving forward. If you have not sent in your questionnaire to the committee, please do so. Your opinion does matter. There are many programs scheduled for May. Friday, May 13
th is the annual
Morrison Shabbat Dinner. Please SAVE THE DATE and enjoy Shabbat Dinner with your friends here at the synagogue. Sunday, May 15
th is our annual
fundraiser featuring the music of The Hot Cat Jazz Band. By now, you have all received information about this exciting event. We really need you to participate by attending and placing an ad in our journal. Wednesday, May 18
th is Sisterhood’s annual
Spaghetti Dinner and Fashion Show. Enjoy the beautiful fashions, and the top notch waiters who will be there to serve you. The following week we have our annual Congregational Meeting, Thursday, May 26. This will be your chance to have your say. All in all, a very busy month. I mentioned at the
beginning of this article that Rabbi Atkins is retiring. His last Shabbat with Beth Hillel will be June 17-18. Please come and join him as he davens for the last time as our rabbi. Hope to see you all soon. Alan
