Beta Zetas Past: Still Giving Us Butterflies

Where were you the last time you got

butterflies in your stomach? Were you nervous?

Excited? Happy? In love? Did your hands or knees

shake, and did your heart feel fluttery or jittery?

Thats how the members of the Archives Committee,

the Program Committee, the Music Committee, the

Social Committee, the hostesses, and I feel about

out Founders Day Banquet on March 28! The

program is about Beta Zeta pioneers, Irene

Spenrath, Lucille Rochs, and Helen Weiss! My heart

is all a-flutter thinking about the interviews done by

Evelyn Weinheimer, Janie Immel, and Donna Henke.

Helen Usener of the Archives Committee also helpedput this program together. We will keep these

interviews forever so that we can preserve our Beta

    Zeta heritage!

You wont need a net to capture a butterfly at

our banquet! Just pick a butterfly off our Texas

Treasure Tree so you know what to bring for

hospitalized children in the Valley. Our gifts of LOVE

will take flight to the McAllen convention, along with

    our prayers and good wishes!

Are you feeling the butterflies yet?

Know Our Beta Zeta HistoryCarolyn Otto has done a wonderful job presenting our chapter history complete

with pictures on the chapter website. Click here to view:

    http://betazeta.weebly.com/chapter-history.html. This history has been

updated every biennium through the years, usually by the outgoing president to

keep it up to date. You will enjoy the pictures and seeing how we have

changed in hairstyles and dress while still sharing our commitment to education

with our previous sisters in Beta Zeta. Read it today to learn the 76 years ofhistory of our Beta Zeta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.

Services for the MonthA special thank you to Tabitha Reeh, invited by

Jo Dodd, Human Growth & Services chair, for sharing

about "Special Olympics". Tabitha asked us to help at

training and events for individuals with intellectual

disabilities. This service will benefit us as well as many

special people. Helpers are needed at the area meet in

Marble Falls on Friday, April 8,10-3. If you can help,

    [email protected].

Once again you did an awesome job bringing

items for the Boys and Girls Club. We collected 50

books, 3 games, supplies and $10. Cash is always

welcome to fund their activities, and we invite you to

bring a $1 to the banquet. Thank you for all of your

support over the past year. We will continue to collect

    items through our April meeting.

Helping Our Sisters to the South

Beta Zeta has many opportunities to help make the 82nd Texas State Convention a success foreveryone. State conventions dont just benefit the attendees. They benefit every member by bringing

new ideas and leadership back to our chapters. Our Area VI is assisting the hosting South Texas

area. We will work at registration and as table hosts. What we do wont come close to what the

hosting area will give in both time and money. Each Area VI chapter will donate $75 to help fund the

Cultural Street Fair. You can help by donating $1.50-$2.00 for this event, which will showcase the

rich cultural heritage of South Texas and help us northerners learn about an area of Texas that

most of us know only in stereotypes. What a great way to encourage diversity and appreciation for

this unique area of Texas! Please donate at the banquet to help our hard working southern sisters.

    Let Your Voice be Heard!

    Mollye Long, Legislative committee

member updated us on the TRTA Day

at the Capitol planned for Wednesday,

    March 23rd. Retired teachers from

around the state will converge on the

capitol to let their views be known. The

state budget deficit threatens to cause

reductions in the state contribution to

TRS as well as changes to retireehealth coverage and premiums.

Thank you, Mollye, for the work

you do on behalf of retired teachers,

current and future. We look forward to

hearing about this special day from

Mollye and others who will represent

    us there.

    The Book Corner

I just finished reading SabineCrossing, A Story of EarlyTexas by Jacquelyn

Thompson, a sixth generationTexan. The story revolvesaround Letty Bradley, theauthors great-greatgrandmother. Thompson hasresearched actual events, courtdocuments, and family lore topiece together Lettys story andall of the Bradley family into ahistorical book about life inTexasits many hardships, adventures, and extremes of

love, greed, and generosity. Itwasnt until after I read thisbook and realized we arecelebrating Texas 175thanniversary this month that Ithought it might be a neatread for our members.

The book is availablefrom Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and AuthorHouse.

Beta Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma February 28, 2011 Minutes

Program- Our meeting opened with a program on Special Olympics presented by Tabitha Reeh. She told

us that Special Olympics is a non-profit organization benefiting people with special needs. It began in

Texas in 1969 with 350 athletes; now it has over 36,000 participants in Texas alone and is also nationwide.

Over 48,000 volunteers are needed and members were encouraged to volunteer. The next event is Track

    and Field, April 8th

in Marble Falls. Contact Tabitha Reeh [email protected] you can help. Jo Dodd

    was the program facilitator.

President Vitek then officially called the meeting to order with her gavel at 4:40PM in theFredericksburg Elementary Library. Janie Immel read two anonymous inspirational passages. One was

about Beatitudes for friends of disabled people and the other was a quote, The only th ings kids wear out

faster than their shoes are parents and teachers. The hostesses were thanked for a wonderful table full ofrefreshments.

Business Meeting- Jan. 24th minutes were approved as printed in the Beta Zeta Buzz newsletter. Tisha

Clements sent her Treasurers Report and it was filed for audit.

Grant-in-Aid/Scholarships- Janet Hext encouraged us to tell college students that will soon student teach to

apply for scholarships. Jerrie Dooley has worked tirelessly to get students to apply for Alpha State

Aspiring Educator Awards. Last year the state gave 10, 5 of which were local students! This year we have

six local non-traditional college students applying. Each one of them had a letter written by a Beta Zetamember. Thanks went out to all involved. Evelyn Weinheimer also spoke about Retired Teachers awarding

grants to classroom teachers for a class project they want to undertake- Donnie Finn was given information

to post on all campuses. Retired teachers are also encouraging relatives of Texas Retired Teachers

(majoring in education) to apply for scholarships.

Membership- Janet Hext conveyed that 35 chapter members were present at the meeting.

Legislative- Mollye Long reported in the absence of Lucille Rochs, who is home recovering after a fall.

She spoke about Filling the Gallery at the state Capital on March 23 with educators. Let Mollye know ifyou want to carpool.

Ceremonies and Archives will meet to plan for our Founders Day Banquet.

Unfinished Business- Members were encouraged to visit the Alpha State website to register for the StateConvention (in McAllen June 23-25) and make room reservations soon. We want a host of Beta Zeta

members to be there as our fellow chapter member, Joanne Davis, is sworn in as president of Alpha State!

New Business- Andrea Hudson informed us that our chapter received the Early Bird Award for our

yearbook. Evelyn Weinheimer made a motion and Janet Hext seconded that Founders Day Donations willbe donated to State Convention Cultural Street Fair. Motion passed. It was also okayed for another jar to

be at Founders Day to collect money/books for our local Head Start center which was flooded in thesevere cold (fire extinguisher lines above the kitchen burst) resulting in loss of computers, student

materials, and other items. Talk to Jo Dodd if you are interested in being a volunteer substitute teacher for

Head Start; they have no funds to pay substitutes but fill-in staff is still needed. At least 21 members turned

in checks for Founders Day Banquet to beheld in honor of Beta Zetas 76th birthday on March 28, 2011 atthe Memorial Presbyterian Church on North Milam. Please make a reservation by March 19

    thif you plan to

attend. Meeting was adjourned after we sang Lean on Me led by Lindy Haley assisted by KarenLoeffler.

    Respectfully submitted,
