and family. Once again, this year will be a free event, so look for us in Lot 10, by the river. On Friday, December 8th, we will be hosting our 3rd Annual Christmas Party from 7:00PM until 11:00PM. This is absolutely our showcase event with the location in the Libbey Mansion, all dressed up for the holidays. This has been my favorite event of the year, with everyone getting a bit dressed up while enjoying fine food, upscale beers, and fine wines. We are already acquiring items for the silent auction, and I can guarantee that the silent auction this year will be the grandest ever. If you have anything you think would be a good silent auction item, please let me know. We sincerely appreciate your generosity. Now’s the time to say good bye. At the end of this calendar year, I will be stepping down as President of the ΑΣΦ Beta Rho Alumni Association. Our by-laws state (yes, we actually have bylaws) that all officers’ positions are two-year terms. So, I have over-stayed by a year. I have some very genuine and heart-felt thank you’s: To Gordy Wilson for being a very supportive vice president. He rarely missed a meeting. To Jim Layman for being an outstanding treasurer. He is the best at what he does! To Aaron Dau for all his work taking notes at all our meetings. I don’t know how he does it with everyone talking at once. To Chuck Kreutz for allowing us the use of his house for all our meetings. And of course, his incredible generosity to the Old Gal . To Adrienne Patterson who always takes the initiative to provide the best edibles at our functions, and helping us dumb men keep our act together. To Steve Dixon for running the golf outing. But much more importantly, his incredible generosity, which is too extensive to list on this page. To Greg Fretti, Mike Webber, Don D King, Jeff Traudt, and Dave Kanarowski for all their time, effort, and hard work to make this alumni association the best in the land!!! And thank you, all of you, for your tremendous support and generosity to the Old Gal!!! To Better the Man, Sigs Baby !!!

Grand Chapter Advisor’s Active Chapter Report

Beta Rho Alumni, I cannot believe that summer is already almost over. It has been both fun and eventful for me personally, and the active brothers as well. A big congratulations goes out to those actives that attended the Elevate Leadership Conference and bringing home a Silver Cup for the Beta Rho chapter!

A commendable effort that shows all the hard work that was put in through the running year, despite the difficulties getting down to Carolina! Another honor of congratulations to our current active president, Ja’vawn Marbury. He was offered and accepted a full-time position with the 3M Company for after his undergraduate curriculum.

A big thank you again goes out to Dave Fockler, and his team of Alumni Association officers and members who assisted in putting on the annual golf outing to help support the undergraduate chapter at UT. The handful of brothers who returned for the event that were also active during my time in the chapter had nothing but positive things to say and also enjoyed their time. We look forward to fall, football, homecoming, and the Christmas party now!

As the fall semester approaches, I ask that if you in any way would like to help, contribute, or assist these actives during the recruitment period please do not hesitate to reach out to me at: [email protected]

Hope to see everyone at the upcoming Alumni events!

Jared Claar (S’06) Sigs Baby !!! Go Rockets !!!

1815 W Bancroft – The Old Gal There are lots of AZQ Brothers who have fond memories of 1815 W Bancroft...... our home away from home from 1963 until the mid 1980's. Thanks to Brothers Tom Davis (S'65) and Dave Fockler (F'75), they have "acquired" a limited supply of 50 bricks from the house -- these bricks are from the column that supported the small roof over the driveway. Brother Davis took a tour of the "Old Gal" when he got the bricks -- he said the basement still smelled like beer!!! Thanks to Brother Dave Glore (F'83) who made the plaques for the bricks --

The bricks are being offered first come first served for $20 each -- when they are gone they are gone..... Profits go to the Beta Rho Scholarship Endowment Fund. For local brothers who pay for a brick, you can get your brick at the 2017

Christmas Party, one of the monthly Brotherhood Breakfasts at Uncle John's, or we can arrange a time to meet up and get you your brick. *** Just because of logistics, we don't want to ship them to brothers outside of the local area. (However, if you are from out of town and are really really really interested in a brick -- please call Bill Weber 419-297-7720 to discuss costs and shipping details before paying). ***

Pete Monaghan (F’77) and daughter Morgan with a part of Alpha Sig history. (good thing the bricks can’t talk!) To buy your piece of Alpha Sig Beta Rho history: Pay $20 by Venmo: UT AZQ Alumni or Send a check for $20 made out to Alpha Sigma Phi Alumni Association to Jim Layman 4435 Todd Dr. Sylvania, OH 43560

Active Chapter Update

Dear Alumni Brothers, Thank you for all the support and efforts you put towards the active chapter during the 2016-2017 school year. Your efforts are very much appreciated and we cannot thank you enough for everything you all do for us. This past year for us was one of a lot of growth, prosperity, and most of all a lot of national recognition for our active chapter both at UT and at the national level. On April 1 this year, I was lucky enough to get tapped into Blue Key, the highest honor an undergraduate student can receive at UT. I joined a long list of great Beta Rho men who were awarded the same honor. I will be the Songfest Emcee next year (first time in a while it hasn’t been a smeg) and am looking forward to this. But it gets even better. During Elevate, the national conference for Alpha Sigma Phi, we were awarded the Silver Cup, placing us in the top 20% of all Alpha Sigma Phi chapters in the country. Next year we are looking to do even better.

(Left to right) David Scarberry (F’13), Josh Blohm (F’15), Tyler Girt (F’15), Neil Young (S’15), Luke Gayer (F’15), Ja’Vawn Marbury (F’13), Evan Reed (F’15),

Trevor Daniels (S’16), Ross Planson (F’14) with Silver Cup Award To top off that weekend, former HSP David Scarberry (F’13) was inducted into the Undergraduate Hall of Fame, joining Aaron Dau (F’09) as the only Beta Rho men to have this honor. Overall, the year was spectacular, and next year will be even better. On September 23rd, we will be having our Family Relations Night on campus inviting all parents and friends. Recruitment week will be September 4-9, and the Homecoming tailgate will be on October 7th as we take on Eastern Michigan. Thank you all for everything, and we look forward for another year of awards, brotherhood, and positive movement for the Old Gal. To Better the Man,

Ja’Vawn Marbury (F’13) HSP, ΑΣΦ

UT Football Celebrates 100 Years

Fall is almost here and that only means one thing – FOOTBALL!!! 100 years ago, Toledo University fielded its first football team and a Beta Rho brother was the first coach. Dr. John B. Brandeberry (longtime faculty advisor, Beta Rho Roster #1), served as Toledo football coach for just one year, and started one of the University's greatest traditions even before there was a student newspaper, a yearbook, and before we were named the “Rockets” (the nickname "Rockets" wasn’t used until 1923). Brother Brandeberry was a native of Alliance, Ohio and a 1913 graduate of the town's football powerhouse--Mount Union College. Brother Brandeberry was no stranger to college football as he played football for Mount Union's Coach Robert Dawson who racked up a 49-24-4 record in a program that started in 1893. A group of Toledo University men had been trying to form a football team on campus when Brandeberry volunteered to be their coach. That first team had only 15 players – they had no playing field and there was no athletic department. Brandeberry funded most of the season out of his own pocket. Brother Brandeberry did not have the same success he experienced while a player at Mount Union as Toledo lost all three games in the inaugural season. The rag-tag team was concerned about paying for their own uniforms individually so to help raise funds they arranged an October 10 game with the U of Detroit and were defeated 145-0. Worse, four players were lost to injury. Things would not get much better with a 90-0 loss to Ohio Northern and then a 27-0 loss to Findlay to end the season. The 1917 team was out-scored 262-0. After the 1917 season, James Baxter

Alpha Sig Athletes

Alpha Sigs have always been known for our athletic prowess. The All-Sports trophy was in the ΑΣΦ trophy case for many years with a streak in the 1960s into the 1980s where the All Sports Trophy resided in the Sig house for more than 25 years in a row. While there were lots of great athletes in the chapter, several brothers stood out as UT Varsity Athletes with three Sigs honored by being selected into the UT Hall of Fame as athletes – Clarence “Red” Palm (S’37), Tom Beutler (S’65), and Paul Peer (F’79). Brothers John Brandeberry (S’37) and John Savage (S’51) are also in the UT Hall of Fame. Brother Palm (S’37 Roster #2) played both offensive guard and middle line-backer for the early Toledo football squads. His tenacity as a middle linebacker won him All-Ohio Conference and second-team All-Ohio honors during his senior year. Leading the team as co-captain in 1936, Palm let his actions as the team's top tackler speak for him. He played on teams that won seven straight games - at the time the longest streak in school history at his position, according to an edition of The Collegian in 1946. Clarence "Red" Palm was a true scholar athlete. He was a member of the debate team and was elected to The ARX (Blue Key) national honor fraternity. Brother Palm was elected to the Varsity T Hall of Fame in 1998. (source: UT Athletics utrockets.com/hof)

____________________________________________________________ Brother Beutler (S’65) went to Central Catholic High School in Toledo. He saw limited playing time on the football field during his junior year at Central. At this time he found weightlifting and bodybuilding both of which were relatively new to the Midwest. He worked out on his own and by his senior year in high school he had developed both his strength and his speed. Tom was a starter his senior year and he had a very successful senior season. Tom had three scholarship offers – Clemson, University of Findlay, and Toledo. He chose Toledo. At the time, freshmen were not eligible to participate in varsity athletics – they played on their own freshman team and played other freshmen teams and a very limited schedule (4 or 5 games). Prior to the 1965 Rocket football season, Tom’s freshman coach Jim Flynn went to head coach Frank X. Lauterbur and suggested that the varsity

Volume2Issue1 Fall2017took over as football coach and Brandeberry continued teaching mathematics. One of the members of the 1917 football team, Wayne Dancer, would be key to starting our Chapter on January 16, 1922 as an early "local" fraternity called Zeta Omicron. Dancer and would later donate his rare 1917 Football team photo to the University's Football Coach's office – it is the only know photograph of the 1917 team. At the time of his sudden death in 1953 Brandeberry was the Dean of the College of Engineering at Toledo and the President of the Mid-American Conference. In 1993 on the hundredth anniversary of Brother Brandeberry's birth, loyal Beta Rho Brothers gathered in homage with his widow graveside at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park to pay tribute to a great Beta Rho and Toledo man. Today, he is still remembered with the Dr. John B. Brandeberry Scholarship awarded to Juniors and Seniors in UT's College of Engineering. Brother Brandeberry was elected to the Varsity T Hall of Fame in 2005.

should switch its defense to a 5-3 and move Tom to middle guard to take advantage of his speed, quickness, and strength. Tom doesn’t know why Lauterbur agreed to a switch to a new defense. But Tom said the change to a new defense and his move to middle guard made his career. Tom’s senior season found the Rockets finish with a 9-1 record and a MAC Championship establishing a record more most wins in a season at the time. Tom was named first-team All-MAC as a middle guard three times, in 1965, 1966 and 1967. In 1967 he was named the MAC "Linemen of the Year" and was awarded the Nicholson Trophy in 1967 as "the player contributing

the most toward the success of the team." He was also recognized as a first-team All-American by Central Press and second-team All-American by Newspaper Enterprise Association. He started in the East-West Shrine Bowl Game in San Francisco and blocked a field-goal attempt to preserve a 16-14 win for his team. Beutler started in the Coaches All-American Game in Atlanta, GA. (source: UT Athletics utrockets.com/hof) Following his college career Tom was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and played four seasons

with the Browns and Baltimore Colts. Tom played in the very first Monday Night Football game vs. the New York Jets on September 21, 1970. The Browns defeat Joe Namath's Jets 31-21. Tom was out of football for several years and then had the opportunity to play for the Memphis Grizzlies in 1974 for the upstart World Football League. He was reluctant at first to get involved in this new league but when the Toronto Northmen signed three Miami Dolphins players, fullback Larry Csonka, halfback Jim Kiick, and wide receiver Paul Warfield to what was then the richest three-player deal in sports, Tom decided to give it a shot. His salary was $28,000 for a 21-game season. Tom was also active in other activities on campus besides football. He helped found the Toledo Chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ and even in college he was a frequent speaker to high school and youth groups about his religious faith, which still today is the most important thing in his life. He was also selected as a member of Blue Key. Tom also found time to be an active member of ΑΣΦ. Like all brothers, Tom said he did jump off the top porch at 1815…. Once! He also met his future wife, Elly Pankratz (UT Homecoming Queen and Chi Omega President) in the basement of the house at a party. After retiring from football owned a successful CPA business, Beutler & Associates. Brother Beutler was elected to the Varsity T Hall of Fame in 1977. Tom will be honored as a member of the Toledo All-Century Team at the Toledo vs. Tulsa game on September 16. Let’s be sure we give him a great big cheer when he is introduced.

Brother Peer (F’79) was a Toledo High School standout at St. Francis de Sales High School. Paul followed his brothers Jim (F’69), Dave (F’73) and Jeff (F’75) and pledged Alpha Sig in Fall 1979. Paul originally came to UT on a full football scholarship as a linebacker. But after arriving on campus, participating in several preseason practices, and seeing how big the guys on the football team were, Paul said he decided pretty quickly that baseball would be his sport! Paul has great memories of his time playing baseball at UT despite the fact that the facilities were not the greatest. During the off season and in bad weather the team practiced in the Field House which was dark and cold. The batting cage was up in an upper level of the Field House with little light – pretty difficult to try to hit a baseball. It was like practicing in a cave. One of their sets of uniforms was hand-me-downs from the Mud Hens – and their other uniforms weren’t much better.

Paul loved having the baseball field on main campus (where the Rec Center is now) because it enabled more students to just walk up and take in a game on a sunny spring day. He is glad to see that the baseball field will be moving back to main campus. Paul earned three letters in baseball from 1980-1982. He cut his collegiate career short to join the New York Yankees after his junior season. Peer had 105 career RBIs, 280 total bases and 23 home runs. During his years with the Rockets, Peer was both a consistent and powerful offensive threat, leading the

team in total bases and home runs in each of his three seasons. As a first-team All-MAC selection in 1981, Peer led the Rockets in several categories that season including runs (50), hits (60) and doubles (16). (source: UT Athletics utrockets.com/hof) In the Yankees system, Peer was named Player of the Week in 1983 with their minor league team in Painstville, NY. It was during Paul’s first year in the Yankees organization that the Yankees decided to stop fielding two of their minor teams and also started a youth movement under new manager Gene Michael. Michael’s idea was to find teenage players in Caribbean countries and sign them as 14 and 15 year olds. It was just a numbers game and at age 22 Paul was too old for the Yankees. He decided to return home to Toledo. He joined Sofo Foods and now serves as their Director of Multi Unit Sales. Paul was inducted into the St. Francis de Sales Hall of Fame in 1994 for both football and baseball. He was elected to the University of Toledo Varsity T Hall of Fame in 1995. Paul is married to Lisa Ambrosetti, who played varsity tennis at UT.

Beta Rho Omega Chapter

The Spring 2017 Alumni Signet featured a story about Brother Eugene “Gene” Zytkus (F’1938 – roster #49) Beta Rho’s oldest alumni. I recently received a note from Gene’s son Dennis, that Gene entered Omega Chapter in May. Gene Zytkus was born in 1918 (98 ½ years old), grew up in North Toledo, and attended Woodward High School. Gene attended The University of Toledo and was initiated in Alpha Kappa Pi on September 10, 1938. He served as chapter president as well as president of THE ARX and also the Panhellenic Council. Still Hanging Out More than 50 years since their days at 1815 Bancroft, the “60’s Sigs” get together 4 or 5 times a year to reconnect, tell stories, have some adult beverages, and enjoy that great AZQ Brotherhood. Their most recent event was a Mud Hens game.

Endowment Progress

To celebrate the 80th year of Beta Rho, the Beta Rho Chapter Endowment has set a goal to raise $80,000 by Beta Rho Founders Day on March 13. Reaching our goal of $80,000 will provide approximately $5,000 that will be used for scholarships and professional development activities for active Beta Rho brothers every year in perpetuity. Over the past two years the Beta Rho Chapter Endowment has awarded $2000 in scholarships to Beta Rho undergraduates.

Thanks to the following Beta Rho brothers who have decided to Pledge Beta Rho ... Again with $19,350 in the Beta Rho Endowment fund and have also pledged another $7,500 in future donations.

Stay Connected with the Present - Look Back at the Past One of the purposes of the Beta Rho Alumni Association is to create and perpetuate the Alpha Sig Brotherhood. The Alumni Association has held several events each year and it is important to share pictures and updates with brothers who couldn’t attend an event. We are working to keep in contact and share updates will all Beta Rho brothers. This has proven to be quite a challenge as brothers of different ages communicate differently. We are reaching out in many different ways – hard copies of newsletters are sent to older brothers, email communications, a Beta Rho webpage, and postings on Facebook. We hope we find the way to best communicate with you. It is also important to notify the Alumni Association if your email, phone number, or address changes.

One of the best ways to keep in touch with ΑΣΦ Beta Rho Alumni is on Facebook - Alpha Sigma Phi-Beta Rho Alumni (www.facebook.com/groups/4818342897/).

One of the projects The Beta Rho Alumni Association is undertaking is trying to gather and then archive historical items from the 80 years of the Beta Rho. We have been successful in gathering items thanks to many brothers who have shared pictures, scrapbooks, oral/written histories, trophies, chapter minutes, composites, and other odds and ends. Special thanks to John Hall (F’63), Jim Layman (W’77), Larry Dietrick (S’65), Gregg Darah (F’77), Pete Isaacs (F’81), Bill Weber Sr. (F’55), Val Farnham (S’42), Paul Blake (F’78), Denny LoConti (F’74), Mike Meyer (F’78), Pete Hess (F’67), and Tom Davis (S’65) who have shared items - sorry if we missed anyone. If you have any items, pictures (pictures will be scanned and returned), scrapbooks, composites, trophies... contact Bill Weber 419.297.7720 or [email protected] Many of these historical images and articles were archived on the Beta Rho Alumni/Active webpage at www.utalphasigs.org. However, within the past month the domain name and the web hosting service expired and we didn’t get notification so the website is temporarily down. But we are working to get the website rebuilt and also the domain name reactivated. It should be done in the next several weeks. We will notify everyone when the website is back up and running. This is the best place to see both historical things (old composites, yearbook pictures, pictures from different eras) and also lots of pictures from Beta Rho Alumni Events like Homecoming, Golf Tournament, Christmas Party. It will be up and running soon……..
