Fall 2012
Beta Epsilon Gives Back With the end of the first semester coming to a close, the Beta Epsilon
chapter reflects back on all the accomplishments of the year. Something all the ladies pride themselves on is their ability to be actively involved in the Monmouth community, and this year has not been an exception. Nothing feels better than coming together with fellow sisters and helping for amazing causes. We have participated in activities ranging from voluntary classroom aiding to putting on their walking shoes on! One of the huge kickoffs for volunteerism has been the Saturday of Service. Campus wide both Greek and non-‐Greek students ban together to lend a helping hand to those in need. Alpha Xi came out in full force as sisters wore their letters with pride. Preforming duties such as raking leaves and horse care at Rainbow Riders, every woman did her part to help the citizens of Monmouth. A nonprofit organized to help those with autism, Rainbow Riders holds a special place in the community of Monmouth. Overall, this semester has truly been the season of giving thanks, and donating ones time to others. The sisters of Alpha Xi Delta should be proud of their efforts, and have truly shown what a positive influence we can create for
the Monmouth College community and its surroundings.

Alpha Xi Deltas everywhere gather around the drawing board in order to plan events in attempt to raise funds for Autism Speaks. The Beta Epsilon Chapter is no different. Every year our chapter puts on Xi Man, which is one of Alpha Xi Deltas AmaXing challenges. Beta Epsilon has been scrambling the past couple of years to find another AmaXing challenge that will grow into how successful Xi Man is for us now. We are certainly coming close to the buried treasure. Last year, as a sophomore, Courtney Jonsson opened up one more opportunity for students to take part in a fun way to raise money for our cause by planning Beta Epsilon's first ever Xi Marks the Spot. With only three teams participating in the event and only raising seventy-‐five dollars, our chapter saw a lot of room for improvement. Xi Marks the Spot is a scavenger hunt that is campus-‐wide. A week before the event, sisters sit outside of the cafeteria and kindly convince people to participate. All teams start at the Huff Athletic Center and are given a clue sheet. After this sheet of riddles is handed out, the race begins! Each team goes to the location identified by the clues

provided. Upon arriving at this station, the teams have to complete a challenge and take a funny picture. After this is completed, a puzzle piece is awarded to the team. The last puzzle piece is awarded when the team arrives back at the Huff. For here it is a race against the other teams on who can complete the puzzle the fastest. This year, on November 17th, Xi Marks the Spot hit campus once again. We decided to make the event pirate themed. Each sister wore an eye patch to the event and the teams were encouraged to dress up in the pirate attire. Junior, Melinda Craddock and sophomore, Haleigh Garrett planned and executed this event while serving as Philanthropy co-‐chairs. Nine teams
participated in this

event, tripling the number of attendants last year. Our chapter was very pleased and impressed by this. Prizes for the event were donated to the chapter by several businesses around the Monmouth and Galesburg area. We awarded prizes for first places for three categories: First Place Overall, Best Costume, Best Picture. Mitch Comstock's Peg Legs, one of the teams that participated in the event, won the first place prize, while the men of Zeta Beta Tau took home the prize for best costumes. Winning the prize for best photo was the ASAP Executive Board. Overall, the event raised one hundred and eighty five dollars. We hope that this event continues to grow on campus and becomes something that all Monmouth students look forward to
every fall semester.

During the 2012 spring semester, Alpha Xi Delta has been busy with all sorts of activities, many of which involving other fraternities and sororities. As a way of bringing our Greek community on campus closer, it was decided that each Wednesday all Greek organizations would their own Greek letters. It is an awesome way to not only show off pride for your own organization but also being Greek as a whole.
Aside from becoming a closer Greek community, the sororities showed off their pride by hosting their annual Trio Days, which gave all three sororities a chance to come together for three days. During tis time, many different events were held to bring us all together. On the third and last day, a banquet was held for all the sororities where

awards were given out to various members of each sorority. Alpha Xi Delta also held many exchanges with other fraternities on campus. With our fraternity men, we have done some very fun and exciting games, which might not be like your typical game night with the family. During the month of October, we had a Halloween exchange with the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Great fun was had by all as we celebrated the spooky holiday. We had yet another fright-‐filled exchange with the men of Phi Delta Theta. During this exchange, we were fighting for our lives as he spilt up into too enemy teams, hunters and zombies. Our other exchanges have been equally as fun with other fraternity men on
3
campus, such as one of our most exciting exchanges.
Our final exchange with the men of Zeta Beta Tau this year is one we do annually: Thanksgiving Dinner. This year we celebrated the food filled holiday on the Friday before break. The boys made two delicious turkeys, and the girls made all of the side dishes from stuffing to pumpkin pie. All in all this semester has been filled with fun, laughter, and growth of the Monmouth Greek community, as well as Alpha Xi Delta. However, this semester isn’t over yet! We are thankful to be able to have such a strong Greek family on our campus and look forward to doing more with the other fraternities and sororities.

Beta Epsilon through the years
Beta Epsilon: What was recruitment like when you joined Alpha Xi Delta? Isabelle Marshall: Well, the Alpha Xis were well thought of then, in the year that I was a sophomore. I didn't pledge or join when I was a freshman, but our sophomore year there was a big class of us, and we had a lot of fun together. Had what we called 'Pickle Mixes' when we didn't go to the dining room, we'd pick up our food over there and go to the room and eat together… It was fun, and we got along fine. Everyone did. BE: You knew one of the founders, correct? IM: Yes, I knew Alice Bruner. She lived out on Broadway, almost to 12th Street, and she used to have the chapter over to her house. Once a year she'd always have us over, and she was so pleasant. She was a tall woman and very... she didn't slouch around, she just stood tall. She was always very pleasant and... as a freshman, you were invited over to her house for tea. I don't think you have teas anymore, but she always had cookies and tea or water for everyone and it was very nice to go over there. She was a very nice woman and I always felt privileged to have known her. We always called her Mrs. Bruner, we didn't call her Alice, she was very gracious and you wanted to be like her because she was so pleasant to be around, so we enjoyed that. BE: Did she ever talk about what it was like trying to found Alpha Xi? IM: She used to talk about that. Her husband was a Sig Ep, I think, and they met in Galesburg when they were in school. He was a very kind and understanding gentleman and always welcomed us when we went over there to visit her. They were good images to remember and try to follow. It wasn't always easy, but I did. BE: Did you have a lot of mixers with the fraternities? IM: Yes we did. The fellas, the fraternities, would invite a sorority over for a meal, and the sororities would invite them over to the dorms to eat. They didn't like that very well because they didn't think we had enough to eat, but they got along. I think they probably went to Hawcock's, at that time the big restaurant uptown, and they probably went to Hawcock's and had a hamburger after they came to the dorms, but that's okay. BE: What was it like interacting with the other sororities? IM: There was a house on the corner of 9th and Broadway; it's not there now, but there was a house there, and the Kappas and the Pi Phis and the Alpha Xis each had a room. We all met on the same day, same evening or after school, and so the girls would pile out of there as fast as they can, but it was fun. We had our meetings in our room and doors were closed and you couldn't hear anything that was going on... It was fun that way.
Sisters connect with Alpha Xi Delta alumna Isabelle Marshall has been a huge influence on the Beta Epsilon chapter, and we got to speak with her this semester. Having graduated in 1936, the campus that she described was one of a very different
nature than the one that we enjoy now.

Alpha Xi Delta Formal
Recruitment 2012
1
The ladies of the Beta Epsilon chapter at Monmouth College are proud to announce the addition of 15 new members to the Alpha Xi Delta family. In total, we recruited two seniors, one junior, and twelve freshmen. This made the total girls in our chapter to our max at 55 incredible women.
The overall Panhellenic theme of the 2012 Fall Formal Recruitment was “Greek Girls and the Chocolate Factory.” Over the period of three nights, girls going through sorority recruitment were able to go to the three sororities to experience the themes that they have chosen. This year Alpha Xi Delta decided to have philanthropy night
2
for the first day of formal recruitment. During that night, we were able to show the potential new members how Alpha Xi Delta raises money and awareness for Autism Speaks. Our ladies prepared factual puzzle pieces and provided an Autism Awareness video to show
how we support this philanthropy.
The second night of recruitment was our semi-‐formal theme night called “You Will Blossom in Alpha Xi Delta”. This theme involved dressing blue and wearing flowers and telling potential new members how we have blossomed and realized our potential in Alpha Xi Delta. This night was for the girls going through recruitment
wanting to hear more about the girls in our chapter. A video slide show was prepared to show what we, the Alpha Xi Delta girls at Monmouth College do
throughout the school year, and sophomore Mackenzie Mahler and Senior Kim Boyd spoke about the Greek experience.
The third and final night of recruitment was our preference night. This involved the ladies wearing black dresses and pearls and having a ceremony that is similar to what the girls would do if they were
3
an Alpha Xi Delta. Sophomore Haleigh Garret and senior Michelle Hutchison gave testimonials about what Alpha Xi has meant to them.
Following recruitment was Bid Day. Though it was a rainy day, we all got our ponchos on and went to welcome our new members. We were all excited to see familiar faces that we grew to love during the recruitment process. All of our new members add something different to make Alpha Xi Delta so unique. After bid day and getting to know our new members even better, we are happy to announce that they have found a great and supportive home in Alpha Xi Delta.
Active members don’t let the rain stop them from attending the traditional run-‐out to

Xi Boutique on campus for MC Family Weekend
1
This year Monmouth College’s Family Weekend was special for the ladies of Alpha Xi Delta. Last year, we began hosting our own family weekend with events centered around our chapter, and we wondered what we could do for this family weekend as well. We decided to have an open house so everyone could share this wonderful addition with their families. Members had the opportunity to do fun things on campus with their families, like going to the football game or seeing a hypnotist. Then, they could come to the house to relax and enjoy the company of good friends.
During the open house, our Max Chair, Kelly Swann, was able to
2
arrange for Xi Boutique products to be at the house. This was the first time that items from Xi Boutique were sold on our campus, and we were so excited to have all of the products here for our families to look at. Because it was such a success, our chapter is hoping to do more with Xi Boutique in the future. We love the opportunity to show off our pride by wearing letters and sporting Alpha Xi Delta gear!

Monmouth College Throwback
1
This year the theme of Homecoming at Monmouth College was “Throwback.” It was a tribute to the traditions and history of Monmouth College, and that’s exactly what Alpha Xi Delta set out to achieve when welcoming alumni back to campus. We contacted our alumnae and found pictures of the ladies who had come before us. We invited the alumnae to come spend the day with us at our open house.
For the parade, we created a classic float inspired by traditional designs in Monmouth’s colors. Though the parade got rained out, we still won the honor of having the best float! We managed to make the best of the rain and all the girls gathered at the house to spend time with the alumnae.
In a sense, this was the epitome of the throwback theme, as we got lost in the stories and nostalgia with our alumnae. We even brought out scrapbooks from years past.
The night before homecoming was the Spirit Shout. The president gave a hearty speech, organizations on campus get together and perform a dance based on the homecoming theme, and this year the competition also had a
Homecoming 2012
2
chant. We paired up with the men
of Zeta beta Tau and had a great time performing our dance. With our original chant and extra points earned through the donation of canned goods to a local food pantry, we once again, won the all of Homecoming and were awarded with $200!
On top of that, we raised money for Autism Speaks through our second-‐annual Dancing Faculty/Staff Member competition. We were able to make a surprise donation to Autism Speaks with some of our winnings from Homecoming.
On the day of the game, Alpha Xi Delta helped support the Fighting Scots on the football field, and sisters handed out facts about autism to help raise awareness among students and alumni. Even though Monmouth lost the game, we didn’t let it dampen our
3
spirits. Homecoming is a time to be
proud of our school and our organization, Alpha Xi Delta. Luckily for us, we have so much to be proud of, and it’s always nice to have our alumnae celebrate with us. This year, Alpha Xi proved to Monmouth College just how much Fighting Scot spirit we truly have.
