Both for attend- ees and my colleagues ferrying books between venues—fine weather does make a harbour-side festival. I'm hoping to see Andrew Solomon after read- ing his book Far From the Tree—a great read. This month Lost for Words by Edward St Aubyn (p.4) looks like good reading for a festival month, and I look forward to the new Michael Cunningham. His Pulitzer Prize winner The Hours is a favourite re-read of mine. On the crime pages there's a new Vargas, a novella collection featuring a story by Andrea Camilleri for the fans. Gillian Galbraith delves into some more Catholic Church scandal and for a bit of New Orleans colour, Axeman's Jazz with Pinkertons secretary/ Sherlock-Holmes-aspirant Ida sleuthing the Big Easy with friend Louis Arm- strong looks like it could be fun. I think I'll let everyone else read Bob Carr and instead dip into Malcolm Fraser's new book, Dangerous Allies—how times have changed. Then on to Matt Taibbi's The Divide and Barbara Ehren- reich's new book, Living With a Wild God—Ehrenrich is always a stimu- lating writer. James Wolcott has been a rewarding essayist companion this month with his no quarter given collection Critical Mass, and I'm thinking next month's browse will be David Bromwich's Moral Imaginaton (p.19).
