Best-selling Psychoanalysis Books in Mexico City

Patricia Gonzalez Duarte1

IntroductionIn Mexico, as in other Latin American countries, access to books is in general hampered by socio-economic problems: the high cost of production, distribution, promotion and advertising.

There are two phenomena speci c to psycho-analysis texts, however: rst, most books writtenby renowned Mexican psychoanalysts are pub-lished by university presses, and often remainclassi ed as internal publications, which meansthat they are promoted almost exclusively throughthe personal efforts of the author or psycho-analytical group responsible, and never reachbookstores. The second phenomenon is that if thebook is published by a known publisher it is oftennot reprinted when the rst edition is sold out.

Sources of InformationThis information was obtained from interviewswith individuals who are involved in book pur-chasing and who directly handle requests fromcustomers in the eld of psychoanalysis. It coversan area of four major Mexico City bookstores. Thelists of best-selling psychoanalysis books werecompiled between January and May 2000. We didnot look into sales through the Internet but we areaware of widespread complaints from those whohave used this system to buy books from abroad.Three bookstores have branches in numerous partsof the city, with outlets close to universitycampuses, in the north and south of Mexico City, downtown, and in two cities elsewhere in Mexico.

I researched the background, organization andfunction of the bookstores, as well as the processesfor producing and promoting books, in the contextof a profound crisis in the Mexican publishingindustry.

The process of waiting while my contactssupplied the necessary information within theirown time frames, or being supplied with more data

than I requested, of spending long periods openingand perusing books to nd the country where theywere published, to complete the author’s name orto determine whether or not they dealt withpsychoanalysis – was a process that gave me asense of serene enjoyment. It broke my normalroutines and allowed me to gain a quick butcomprehensive overview of the situation as itstands today. Admittedly, my conclusions arepersonal both about the interests of both experi-enced psychoanalysts and students with varyinglevels of academic accomplishment in psychology, psychoanalysis and related areas, and about anumber of the most important psychoanalyticaltrends in Mexico today. I assume that anyone ofmy colleagues looking over this list may reach hisor her own conclusions.

In closing, I would like to repeat a remark madeby Ernst Junger (1895–1998): “Any book worthyof its name must be expected to have changed thereader. After reading it, they can never be thesame.”
