We’ve done it for youagain! The National

Locksmith covert operationsteam has uncovered a newGeneral Motors column to bereleased this fall. Check outpage 11 for Tom Mazzone’sexpose on this new GM hightech ignition lock and securitysystem. And remember, it wasbrought to you first by TheNational Locksmith!

This month marks another ‘first’ for The NationalLocksmith. In this issue you will find the results

of our Reader’s Choice Awards for which you votedback in January.

The rationale of our idea was simple. We printed aballot in the January magazine, and invited you, thelocksmith, to choose your favorite companiesmanufacturing products for our industry. The basisof the award is quality, design and application of theproduct, and we asked for your votes in a variety ofcategories.

Well, the results are in! Although we had decided topermit you to confer the Reader’s Choice Award onas many as 100 companies, only 87 received enoughvotes to qualify. That shows that this is a selectgroup of winning manufacturers. Furthermore, wehave decided that next year we will make theReader’s Choice Award even more exclusive byfurther decreasing the number of possible winners.

So, enjoy this issue’s profiles of award winningproducts! And we’ll alert you as to when you’ll bevoting for next year’s candidates. But be ready tosharpen your pencils. The 1996 decisions will behard to make since you will only be able to vote for afew selections!

Congratulations to all the winners of this year’sReader’s Choice Awards!

Not too long ago I received a call from alocksmith in New England. He told me that at a

locksmith seminar he was approached by anotherlocksmith who was selling copies of our new

AUTOSMART manual out of the trunk of his car.

It was clear to the man who called me that thelocksmith selling the books had copied them on aphotocopier, and that they were not legitimatecopies. I appreciate the fact that he called to warnme of this situation. In fact, he gave me the namesand phone numbers of several witnesses who toldme the same story.

So, as a reasonable person, I decided to call the copymachine artist as a first step. All I wanted was to askhim to admit that he had been violating ourcopyrights, and to agree to halt his illegal activities.

Well, this “gentleman” totally denied everythingeven after I told him about the eyewitnesses!

So my next step was to initiate legal action, and file agrievance with the Ethics Committee of ALOA sincehe is a member as am I. Clearly, this is a violation ofthe ALOA Code of Ethics.

The locksmith quickly rolled over, admitted hiscrimes, and has agreed under threat of severepenalty never to violate our copyrights again. Heasked us to agree to a confidentiality clause, so noone would ever learn what he had done. This Irefused to agree to. When you commit a crime, youhave to pay the price. The ALOA grievance will notbe withdrawn.

Why am I telling you all this? Because if youhappened to be one of the people who purchased acopy of the AUTOSMART from a locksmith basedin Maine, chances are you may have an illegallycopied book. If that is the case, I am sorry to tell youthat you will not be able to purchase updates foryour book. That means you, too, are a victim, andfor that, I am sorry.

However, we can only sell updates to owners whopurchased their books through legal means, eitherfrom The National Locksmith, or a legitimatedistributor. If you have any questions, please giveme a call. And stay tuned for a whopping, big updatefor the AUTOSMART on sale in July!

More Than SchlageDear Marc:

The article on locks was great. Butwhy did you choose Schlage? Let’s seesome further reporting on how Arrow,Kwikset, Medeco stand up.

I’m just now getting used to usingE-Mail. It’s the greatest thing sincevanilla ice cream. With E-Mail, why dowe need fax anyway?

Please put me on your E-mailmailing list.

Get Real!Dear Marc:

I was glad to finally see someonedo an article on the differencesbetween deadbolts. However, I wasdeeply concerned that this article wasso biased towards the products thatlocksmiths sell that you wouldcompare a direct manufacturersproduct, namely Faultless, to adoctored up Schlage product. Thiswas a gross example of comparingapples to oranges.

Why not compare both locks onequal terms installed with only factoryparts just like in real life or at leastwith the same non factory parts. Whywould anyone buy the extra stuffwhen they can buy an Abloy for aboutthe same price and get key controland drill resistance as well. In thefuture please conduct such tests, butplease at least conduct your tests on

equally matched products that wouldnormally be seen in real life. Notconducting tests fairly only degradesthe whole industry.

Jeff N. HartsellNorth Carolina

Editor’s Note: Jeff, You missed ourpoint! As some locksmiths have sentsimilar letters, let me try to answer allof your concerns.

First, you are correct in saying thatwe compared apples to oranges. Thatwas the point. The general publicdoesn’t know the difference between anapple and an orange. When a customerwalks into a home builders supply storethey don’t understand the differencebetween the apples - Schlage, Kwikset,Lori, Master Lock locksets - being soldand the much less expensive oranges -imports. That’s why it’s important foryou as a locksmith to show them thedifference.

Another apple/orange comparisoncan be drawn by what mosthomeowners (and, judging by mostAmerican neighborhoods, manylocksmiths) consider adequate securityfor a door. From the apple sack, adequate security requires a qualitydeadbolt plus appropriatereinforcements. From the bag oforanges, adequate security is anydeadbolt placed on the door.

Our test, in a fun way, simplyillustrated what the industry has beenpreaching for years - Proper securityworks, improper security doesn’t! Thetest and subsequent article now give thelocksmith clear, impressionable andindisputable evidence that this is true.

In other words, apples aren’t orangesand we proved it.

Second. Why didn’t we comparelocks on equal terms?

Because we weren’t comparing locks. We were comparing a properly secureddoor and an improperly secured door.

Third. Why would anyone buy theextra stuff when they can buy an Abloyfor about the same price and get key

control and drill resistance? Most residential doors are composed

of wood or wood/steel with woodframes. Roughly 85 percent of theunauthorized entries made, are madethrough the front door. Of that 85percent, a vast majority are forcedentries. This leads me to believe that formost unauthorized entries, the violatoris not overly concerned about keycontrol or retaining the door’sappearance. Whether Abloy, Medeco,Schlage Primus, ASSA, etc. are used, adoor and frame not properly reinforcedis not secure.

While there are applications forusing drill resistant and key controlledsystems, when placing the odds on myhome security, I’d probably put mymoney on the less expensive extra stuff.

(It should be noted that there areareas where pick resistant locks arepreferred and necessary for residentialuse. Art Paholke, retired Chicago policeofficer and forensic locksmith, statesthat the incidence of surreptitious entryin areas like New York city is prevalent, requiring the use of pick resistantlocks!)

Finally, conducting tests on equallymatched products seems a littlesenseless. I like apples. My wife likesapples. I like Delicious Apples. My wifeprefers Macintosh. Can I compare thetwo and state that one is better than theother? Not really.

Likewise, there are many fine, equally matched locks from which tochoose; Abloy, Schlage, Medeco,Kwikset, ASSA, Titan, Lori, MasterLock, etc. Each has strengths andweaknesses and will appeal to differentlocksmiths per their varyingapplications.

any of the advertisements on theInternet for locksmithing supplies, butjust the very idea scares me whether itseems harmless or not.

Our company does a lot ofautomotive locksmithing and weservice several auto clubs. In doing so,we have learned that the towingindustry does much more automotiveunlocking than any locksmith evendreamed of. They are being educatedby many of the suppliers thatlocksmiths buy tools from. As muchas I don’t like it, I have to admit thatthere is a need for towing companiesto do some lock-outs. But for them tobe supplied with automotive locksmithmanuals, pick sets, key codes, etc., isgoing too far!

I used to think that I was in favor oflocksmith licensing, because I thoughtit would prevent this kind of thing. Now I do not. I would like youropinion.

Looking For HelpDear Marc:

I am the lead locksmith for TucsonUnified School District #1 in Tucson,Arizona. We have 122 schools andsupport sites located within Tucsonand the surrounding areas. I am in themiddle of retrofitting all lockingdevices (a $1.2 million projectinvolving approximately 50,000 locks)to ASSA High Security Locks as partof a bond funded project. At presentthere are five locksmiths involved inthe retrofit, and I have been cleared tohire two more.

These are currently temporarypositions, meaning they do not atpresent have any benefits (medial, dental, etc.....) This bond is fundeduntil May 1997, which means a steadyjob until that date. There is apossibility of a permanent positioncoming open any time soon, so thechance of coming on full-time is good.

I have looked locally for alocksmith with some experience inhigh security but, of course, anylocksmith worth his (or her, I havetwo female locksmiths) salt arealready in steady positions. If youcould put me in touch with anyonethat would like to come to the“Sunshine State” (it was 80 degreestoday), I will sure appreciate it. Locksmiths In Year 2000Dear Marc:

I just finished reading a letter inyour March 1995 issue titled “AboutFace.”

It would seem that Mr. Seager isunaware of the changes that areaffecting the locksmith industry.

In Dade County (Miami), Florida, the automotive industry attempted toregulate only one portion of thelocksmith industry. After months ofnegotiation and the hiring of aprofessional lobbyist we were able towin an exemption from this ordinance.

Furthermore the alarm industry hasbeen nibbling away at out industry formany years. Until about seven yearsago it was lawful for a locksmith toinstall hardwire alarm systems. Over-night the alarm industry passed statestatute requiring alarm installers to belicensed by the State of Florida. Noteven one locksmith was informedprior to or even after enactment of thislaw. From that day on any locksmithwho had been installing alarmsystems as part of their daily businesstransactions could no longer do so.Companies that were exclusivelyalarm installers were grandfathered in... but not locksmiths.

How long are we supposed to sit onour hands and watch this happen toour industry? Well, I can tell you wehave sat still long enough.

Last month the locksmiths of DadeCounty were successful in passing anordinance that will regulate theprofession, institute testing that willmake certain that all locksmiths willbe proficient in their skill, and it willprevent other industries from takingbits and pieces from our industry. Theordinance outlines the specific areasof our field and that will ensure theProfession of Locksmithing a futurebeyond the year 2000.

I think that it is important toremember that locksmithing is aprofession and not a part-timeindustry.

The customer that calls out a part-time locksmith should have theconfidence that although he/she is apart-timer they meet the criteria of aprofessional locksmith... If thecustomer is paying for a professionaljob they are entitled to a professionaljob.

Marc, at first when I saw that youchanged your mind I was somewhattaken aback. I commend you forhaving the courage for changing yourmind in an open forum such as TheNational Locksmith. Your support isintegral to assure the future existenceof our industry.

We Want LicensingDear Marc:

Here in Georgia there is nolegislation concerning locksmiths. This means that anybody can walkinto a local auto parts store and buycar opening tools, rocker picks (the

part folks call them “wiggle keys”) andpick sets. One local store in my hometown even sells pick guns. I believethat licensing is a necessary evil inorder to protect the trade and thegeneral public. Sure everybody has tostart somewhere, but there needs tobe some sort of checks and balances.

I also believe that the installation ofalarm systems should be regulated aswell. I have heard many locksmithscomplain about being cut out of thisbusiness and, frankly, I have nosympathy for them. The process toobtain a low voltage license is not thatdifficult.

The way electronics are growing inour business the license is going to bea necessity anyway, if you don’t wantto be left behind.

Simply get the license hang it onthe wall and keep on working. I quiteenjoy walking behind the local alarmcompany and taking the job away fromthem because I can handle ALL of mycustomers security needs.

I agree with Mr. Nunberg, it takesa lot of courage to do an about face ona subject like this. We appreciate you.

Protecting The PublicDear Marc:

Every once in a while I get thenotion to take pen in hand and writeabout something that bothers me. I’mreferring to the license issue and thelocksmith. So far all I’ve read about ishow one group is trying to shut outanother group, per se, the alarminstallers locksmith problem. I couldfill this page with what I’ve read andheard but so can most of us in regardsto licensing.

One area untouched so far seemsto be “what about what is good for thepublic interest”? For example, I’m arural locksmith in Wisconsin. RecentlyI was called by the Postmaster of asmall town near by because the locks, newly installed, just didn’t work right!Didn’t work right? I found a B162installed upside down and backwards. One of the tail pieces was short anddidn’t connect properly with the latch. The door closer, new, didn’t close thedoor, nor did the new surface doorinsulation insulate. Surely, this is anamateur, not a locksmith, Surely itoccurred just this once, wrong. So farfive post offices have been reworked. Ican hear some “hard liners

commenting” So what your makingmoney.” The faucet can be shut off!

Have we forgotten what this is allabout? Our jobs? Our futures? Thewell being of our families? Being alocksmith is much more than money. It’s trust! The buck stops here and it’sstopped with the locksmith for 5,000years! Good work and reasonableprices brings more work. The publicaren’t stupid!

Yes, licensing will protect us fromthe alarm installers etc., but whoprotects the public from us. A licenseshould not be a purchased piece ofpaper. It should be earned byexamination and state regulated bythe Department of Licensing andenforced by Department of Industry,Labor and Human Relations. We mustremove the butchers and tinkerersfrom our midst or require them togain knowledge through education sothat all locksmiths can receive thesame status before the public, ourcustomers, will receive knowledgeableand well qualified professionals.

There’s an old saying “Everyday Ilearn something!” Let’s all learn! Let’sget licensing, then educate fromwithin our ranks. Together we can behere for another 5,000 years. If youare still reading this I thank you!

Locksmiths AlreadyLicensed

Dear Marc:Everywhere you look someone is

complaining about the possibly havingto get a license to do lock work. Ibelieve most of us already have alicense, its called a business license. Its a shame that millions of dollarsworth of what used to be our businessis now shared by so many others. Iguess if we just sit around arguingabout things we can look forward tomore of our services being eroded.

I wish ALOA would concentrate onpreserving our profession instead oftesting our knowledge. The only testthat counts is the one your customersgive you. If you pass that then you area locksmith.

The enactment of legislation

affecting the art and craft oflocksmithing should be carefullyconsidered before support is given toany legislation.

In California we bought the ideathat it would be beneficial to requirefingerprinting before the issuance of astate permit. The legislation that wasdrafted gave that authority to theCalifornia Department of ConsumerAffairs. It was to assure the public

(and those in the trade) that therewere no burglars, etc., practicinglocksmithing.

But then something happened. Thedepartment of Consumer Affairs, afteradditional legislation was passed, wentfrom an agency that screensapplicants and then issues permits, tosomething entirely different. The“Permit” has been replaced with astate license. Believe me, there is adifference between the two. We nowhave rules and regulations on alladvertising, including business cards, telephone book advertising, etc.... Thebusiness name is also controlled. Youhave to apply for a name and if it’s notin use state wide, then they can/mightallow it’s use. (Prior to this change abusiness name was screened on acounty by county basis. That fit nicelywith the telephone book area ofcoverage).

In other words, legislation that hadthe backing of most Californialocksmiths and the CaliforniaLocksmiths Association, in it’s originalform, went from a law that screens toone that controls, a much broaderfunction than what was originallyintended. Paperwork and licensing ofemployees, advertising, notification ofchanges in employees, etc, etc, ... arenow the order of the day.

Our failing and that of ourassociation was not in the originalintent, nor was it in the enactment ofthe original legislation. Our error was, first, not realizing how it could bechanged into something not intended. And, secondly, in not developing anability to watch for legislative changesthat would surely follow and wouldgreatly effect us.

The lesson? I absolutely believethat if legislation is needed it ought tobe narrow in scope and not an attemptto correct all that is felt to be wrong. In other words, the saying “Keep ItSimple, Stupid” has real meaning. Thewider the proposed legislation, theharder it is to keep it to its intendedform. It would seem to be preferableto separate the issues that needlegislation and put them through oneat a time.

After legislation is law, anotherproblem exists. That is the naturaltendency for the regulating agency tosuggest refinement of what is nowlaw. Then, of course, there arelegislators that will surely becontacted by alarm company owners(as an example) about the neededchanges. And the legislators will, ofcourse, contact the regulating agencyto get input so that the legislativeassistants can draft the additionalneeded legislation. The point I’mtrying to make is that once you havestarted the involvement ofgovernment, you had better be able tomonitor the situation from then on.Because you will have the problem offighting to keep the law in theintended form.

I, too, wish it were possible to passa law that solves our problems. But,just like the work we do teaches, allthings do not function as designed.Perhaps we need to think about the“cures” to our problems before we putsomething into motion that we thencannot control.

Thanks for allowing the discussion,Marc. It’s good for us all, no matterhow it finally turns out.

There’s a new

lock on theblock - or shouldwe say - a newi g n i t i o n l o c ksystem. And, ofcourse, it’s going toappear on noneo t h e r t h a n aGeneral Motorsvehicle - the late1995-1/2 (1996) Chevrolet Cavalier Z-24 and Pontiac Sunfire GT. (At thispoint, other versions of theCavalier/Sunfire are not affected bythis change.)

On the negative side we have a newlock and service procedure that wemust learn. On the positive side, thisturn marks the end of the dreadedAlpha Technologies ignition. Which, despite its limitation to the 1991through 1994 J car (Cavalier) and the1992 through 1993 N car (Achieva,Skylark and Grand Am), the numberof Alpha Tech locks on the road is byno means small. Models like theGrand Am have had sales over the lastfew years exceeding 500,000 per year.Multiply that times the other modelsand the number of years they wereproduced and we have a whole bunchof Alpha Techs to deal with in ournear future.

Based on current information, however, the new system - dubbed theVehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) orPasslock system - does not appear allthat difficult to work on. In fact, thesystem is incorporated into the 1994GM 10-Cut Module Ignition locksystem, a lock that has proven to beextremely easy to service and/orreplace. Both systems are producedby Strattec Security Corp., the formerBriggs & Stratton Technologies. So,this system should be as easy toservice even with the addition of a HallEffect Sensor to the lock body and amagnet to the plug.

While quite similar in name to thePasskey, the electrical/electronic aswell as the mechanical operation isquite different. Mechanically, thissystem is an integral part of the lock

and not the key, eliminating the needfor a resistor pellet in the blade of thekey. In fact, any correctly cutmechanical key can be used to operatethe vehicle. The absence of the pelletsubsequently eliminates the need forcontacts in the keyway of the lock andwire leads coming off the lock plug. All in all, the new design circumventsmany of the service problems presentin the Passkey system - i.e. bad or lostresistor pellets, bad contacts, leadsbroken due to turning the plug, etc.

Additionally, this new system offersGM the ability to inexpensively createa single key car that still utilizes apassive security system. Under thePasskey (VATS) system version(currently used on the G car - Aurora,Riviera) while the 10-Cut system isused on all the locks, the resistorpellet in the ignition key cannot passthe dust covers on the door and trunklocks without extensive redesign ofthe locks. Therefore, a separate 10-Cutkey is issued for these locks. With thisnew system, however, without thehindrance of the resistor pellet, a keycan now be used that fits the ignition, door and trunk locks.

Electrically/electronically the

system is comprised of the magnetand Hall Effect sensor in the ignitionlock, ignition switch, ElectronicInstrument Panel Cluster (IPC), andthe Powertrain Control Module(PCM). (See illustration above.)

Starting a vehicle employing theVTD system is dependent on twocriteria - a proper Resistance Code (R-Code) and the presence of the R-Codewithin a given window or time frame. If either of these two conditions arenot met, the vehicle cannot be started. It should be noted that the R-Code iscomprised of both an actual resistanceand a series of pulses or a “signature”distinct to the electronics of the HallEffect switch components in the lockshell. Early reports on this systemindicate that each ignition lock has itsown resistance and signature. We willkeep you apprised as moreinformation on this system isavailable. Here’s how it works.

A mechanical key is used to turnthe plug, starting two synchronizedsequences. From the ignition lock, amagnet in the plug turns past a HallEffect switch in the lock shell, generating or producing the R-Code

that is sent to the IPC. At the sametime the ignition switch starts a timingcircuit in the IPC opening a window oftime in which the R-Code must beseen by the IPC.

If the correct R-Code is seen by theIPC within the window, the IPC sendsa coded password to the PCM. If thePCM receives a correct code it allowsthe fuel injectors to operate normally.

If the IPC does not receive the R-Code within the window (indication ofa bad timing cycle), the VTD goes intoa Short Tamper Mode, where thevehicle cannot be started for four

seconds and a telltale light on theinstrument panel flashes. After threeconsecutive failed timings, the VTDgoes into the Long Tamper Mode. Inthis mode the fuel injector system isshut down for 10 minutes and thetelltale light flashes. (It should benoted that service procedures indicatethat under the Tamper Modes thevehicle may start for a brief momentthen die.)

If the IPC receives an incorrect R-Code the VTD immediately goes intothe Long Tamper Mode.

The fun does not stop here,

however. Not only do incorrect signalsto the IPC create a Tamper Mode, butincorrect signals to the PCM alsocreates Tamper Modes. Similar to theIPC, two factors effect the operation ofthe PCM - a timing window and thecoded password from the IPC. Likethe IPC, if the PCM does not receive apassword from the IPC within thepreset window, it enters a ShortTamper Mode. In this mode thevehicle is not allowed to operate forfour seconds. If the password isincorrect, the PCM goes into the LongTamper Mode.

Here’s an interesting note. Shouldthe line that carries the data from theIPC to the PCM become disconnectedor become open while the vehicle’sengine is running, the PCM goes intoa Fail-Enabled Mode. In this mode thetelltale lights continuously and thevehicle can be restarted irrespective ofthe timing window, R-Code andpassword. How is this system serviced?

Let’s start out by saying that shouldany part of this system fail, it will bedifficult for the locksmith to determinethe actual cause. Thus far, the onlyknown method for troubleshootingand determining the source of aproblem in this system is through theuse of a TECH 1 scan tool and is bestleft to the trained mechanic.

Should the problem be from amechanically inoperative ignition lock(i.e. keys missing, vandalism/theft,etc.) the locksmith can make keys orreplace the lock. In doing so, however, the VTD must learn the data or logicoffered by the new lock. To activatethe learn mode on the VTD, simplyturn the vehicle to START. Thisshould activate the Long TamperMode, locking the fuel injectors outfor 10 minutes and flashing the lighton the instrument panel. Once theLong Tamper Mode has beenactivated, let the ignition lock returnto the ON or RUN position and let thevehicle sit until the telltale stopsflashing, usually this will be the full 10minutes. Do not shut the ignition OFFat any time during this procedure or itwill have to be restarted.

As stated earlier, the informationhere is based on early releases of thissystem. We will keep you abreast ofchanges and addendum as theyappear.

This is not myf i r s t e x p e r -

ience with a Plasticand Steel in-the-floor type of safeinstallation. Manyyears ago the firstsafe that usedplastic and steelbars was manufac-tured by Build-A-Safe, Inc. (BASINC). They featuredsingle and dual locking systems in asmall diameter lift out type floor safe.

Recently there have been newinnovations in this market, andConceal-A-Safe has many models andsizes available with a new dial SecurityMask Feature. The idea of a steel doorwith cement sides and a plastic box isthe logical step for protecting the bodyand contents of a safe from rust andwater.

The Fire Safe Mini Vault, wheninstalled, is constructed of fourconcrete walls and one concrete floor. The steel door locks to a steel frame

that is securely attached to all fourwalls. The body of the safe is linedwith soft protective plastic. (Seeillustration 1.)

One of the nicest features of thisunit in whatever size andconfiguration you need is thedisappearing money drop slot. This isestablished by using two steelinterlocking doors. The first door, which has the combination lock, covers 70 percent of the actual dooropening. The second plate comprises

4. Mystery revealed. Removable and turnable upperplate has offset Money Drop slot. It can easily bechanged back and forth in about one minute with notools.

C O N C E A LC O N C E A LA-SAFEDale discusses

the latest plastic and steel entryinto the in-the-floor type of installation

for safes and vaults.

30 percent of the door opening and isheld in place by the first door. Themoney drop slot is cut into the fronthalf of the second door.

The back half of the second door,on the money drop slot door, slidesunder the safe body. This door can beremoved, then turned 180 degrees andreplaced. When the door is positionedthis way, the money drop slot iscovered by the safe body. (Seephotograph 2.) Reverse the door andthe money drop slot is exposed. (Seephotograph 3.)

Consequently at night, or onweekends or vacations, the moneydrop slot can be eliminated by the waythe door with the slot is positioned.(See photograph 4.) This is a real timesaver, and can be quite useful insituations where maximum security isneeded.

One of the nicer innovations is thestandard Security Mask Plus thatthese units are now equipped. Themask consists of a steel plate overlay,a removable outer dial knob, and largeeasy to read numbers. (See photograph5.)

The mask cannot be easilyremoved from the outside of the safe.It must be drilled or Dremeled off.Because of the way the Mask isconstructed, removing it accomplishesnothing of value, but is a necessaryfirst part to remove this safety featurebefore opening the unit.

First, the outer knob can beremoved with an Allen wrench ofappropriate size. Then the upper rightand lower left corner of the mask mustbe either drilled with a 5/16” drill orcut off using any type of cut off wheel. This allows the outside cover to beremoved uncovering the numberplate.

This number plate is welded to thespindle hub and cannot be removedwithout cutting it off with a hole sawor Dremel tool. When the plate isfinally removed, the safe can be drilledunder the dial. The repair requires thecomplete replacement of the SecurityMask.

The Mask is available fromConceal-A-Safe either with or withoutan Anti-Auto Dialer Feature. Thisadded feature protects against the useof the computer-controlled automaticdialer to open the safe and isaccomplished by welding a steel

bracket to the Security Mask. Thesteel bracket covers the top of thedial’s knob, preventing the hooking upof the dialer to the knob.

Conceal-A-Safe is a low cost slidingdoor floor safe that incorporates aunique concept. Present day safes usean expensive sliding bolt work systemto secure the safe door from beingforced open. Instead of sliding bolts, this safe door entirely slides under thetwo opposite edges of the safe body. The door becomes, in effect, one bolt, many times larger and stronger thattwo or more small bolts handing from

the inside of the safe door. Thecombination or key lock is used tokeep the door from sliding and beingopened.

Another standard feature of thesafe and Security Mask is the ATD orAnti-Triggering Device. This is thelarge hub attached to the securitymask dial spindle. This protectsagainst the burglar driving the dial’sspindle into the combination lock, andthus activating the two relockersystems. (If the relockers aretriggered and the dial removed, thecost of opening and repairing the safe

could be as much as the cost of a newsafe.)

The two relocking systems includean internal relock trigger located inthe safe lock, and an externalrelocking device. The back of theLaGard 3300 combination lock isshown in photograph six. The relockcover is held on by the lock cover casescrews. The lock is mounted on a steelhardplate. An Allen cap screw can beseen above and to the right of thecombination lock. This is one of the

two cap screws that hold on theSecurity Mask Plus.

Once the cover is removed, boththe internal and external relockersactivate. The external relocking deviceis spring loaded and fires into awelded plate on the frame of the steelsafe door plate. This plate also blocksthe movement of the sliding doorwhen the combination lock bolt is inthe locked or “Out” position. (Seephotograph 7.)

The relocking device, when fired is

hard to retract. Luckily, the bolt itselfis threaded, and this facilitatesresetting it if you have to work on thesafe lock itself. This is a double-dutyrelock system prevalent on most safesand chests today.

The proper way to install this in-the-floor safe is in the floor. Howeverthere are many different ways toinstall this unit other than digging upthe cement floor with all the presenthazards that this may offer. First, there is an added option for installing

this unit in a wooden floor.

The way I installed this particularmini safe was in a large plastic refusecontainer. First I anchored the barrelto one wall and also to the floor usingcement anchors and threaded rods. These not only reinforced theinstallation of the outer container, butalso will reinforce the poured cement.Photograph eight shows the unit priorto pouring the cement. Also used toreinforce the pour was hardware clothwith 1/4” holes.

Although this is not therecommended installation, thismethod worked for a largecommercial car wash where cuttingand digging the reinforced concretefloor was more than the customerwanted to pay for. Also, with the coveron the container, no outside personeven knows that the safe exists.

These plastic and steel safes comein many sizes and configurations, withsingle and dual custody available. Both combination and key locking

systems are available. The safes arefinished in a rust preventive paintedcoating. Since the body is plastic, thoughts about using these safes tostore hand guns is also an option.Install, Open, and Prosper!!!!!

Mul-T-Lock, though based inIsrael, is a lock company which

has expanded with leaps and boundsinto five continents. The factory hasdeveloped locking systems for locks, doors, automobiles, and padlocks.Their mortise locks can throw bolts inup to four different directions, securing the top, bottom and bothsides of a door. If that’s not enough, they can manufacture a steel securitydoor and jamb around their mortise

lock in a finish to suit from the mostcommercial to the most elegant ofdecor. Their automotive transmissionlock is quite unique, and available instyles to be more or less noticeable, depending upon taste. The morediscrete version relies on warningdecals to reduce the possibility ofattempted theft. The Principles

The front line security of theselocks is their pin tumbler cylinderwith telescoping pins - the “pin within

a pin” concept. Simply stated, whilethis cylinder’s operation is based uponthe conventional pin tumbler principle, the tumblers have been “drilled out”and an additional set of tumblers havebeen placed inside the “drilled out”tumblers.

For the cylinder to turn, both setsof tumblers must meet the shear line. With this in mind, while technicallythis cylinder only houses four or fivetumblers, conceptually it containseight or ten. The keyway is horizontal

to the pin chambers, meaning the sideof the key rather than the top of theblade activates the pin tumblers. (Seephotograph 1.) Mechanically, thisreduces the amount of effective spaceto insert picking tools. Coupled withthe pin within a pin concept, this lockcylinder is traditionally resistant topicking.

The key is side milled with“dimple” cuts. Close inspection of thekey will show that each larger dimplecut has a smaller cut inside the middleof the larger cut. This special cuttingrequires a special key machine fororiginating keys. (See photograph 2.)

Because the cylinder plug’s keywayis offset either right or left, the keysmust be cut in respect to the keyway. As the key is held with the tip facingupward, the cuts on the key will beusually be either left or right of center. This will identify the key as beingeither left or right handed. (Seephotograph 3.)

On some occasions, there will becuts both left and right of center. Those keys will operate key systemswhere locks of right and left handkeyways are mixed. This is known asa double face system. While mostkeys are designed to be conveniencekeys, because the lock tumblers areunidirectional, a combination might becut into one side of the keyblank and adifferent combination may be cut intothe opposite side of the keyblank. Thiskey can operate two differentcombinations. It could be useful to keyan apartment building’s main entranceto a single combination, the tenantspace to a different combination, butonly issue one key to the tenant.Because the bow of the key has aprotrusion on one side, it is easy todistinguish by sight or feel which waythe key must be inserted into the lock

when using “dual” combinations on asingle key. Of course, the locks willhave to be memorized whether theprotrusion will face up or down wheninserting it into the lock.

NomenclatureWith the uniqueness of these pin

tumblers, it should be expected thatthe manufacturer designate thetumbler parts with unique names. (Seephotograph 4.)

What are known as bottom pins inthe United States, are known as PlugPins with Mul-T-Lock. There are twotypes of plug pins, outer or externalplug pins and inner or internal plugpins. (See photograph 5.)

The external plug pins are 4mm(.1575”) in diameter and come in fourlengths. These lengths are nominatedfrom A through D. External plug pinsare “drilled” to accept the internalplug pins. (See photograph 6.)

Internal plug pins come in fivelengths and are nominated 1 through5. They are 2mm (.0787”) in diameter. They will fit into the top of theexternal plug pin, cone first.

What we refer to as top or driverpins, Mul-T-Lock calls combined pins. This pin is actually an assemblyconsisting of an inner pin and spring

encapsulated by an external pin. Thecombined pin is either straight ormushroomed shape. (See photograph7.) Because it is a complete assembly, its diameter is the same as all externalpins, 4mm (.1575”). Its inner pin actsas a driver for the internal plug pins.

Master pins or wafers are to U.S.locksmiths what the Mul-T-Lockrefers to as disks. There are threetypes of master key disks, ExternalSolid, Concaved External, and Internaldisks. (See photograph 8.)

Both external disks are 4mm(.1575”) in diameter and have threelengths. The solid disks are listedfrom +1 through +3. Concaved disksare simply listed 1 through 3. Theconcaved disk has a hole in the centerwhile the solid disk is closed.

The internal disks are 2mm(.0787”) in diameter and are availablein four lengths from 1 through 4.Identification

A key card is supplied with thecoded key. (See photograph 9.) Thiscard should be presented to the Mul-T-Lock locksmith dealer beforeadditional keys are made. The cardnot only is useful to cut keys, but tohelp key lock cylinders. The card willtell the locksmith which key blank touse and what cuts to cut. Our examplecode is 006 ADDBA 14431. “006”represents the keyblank number,

“ADDBA” represents the externalplug pin codes from bow to tip, and“14431” represents the internal plugpin codes. The code will be “decoded”as A1, D4, D4, B3, A1. (Our cylinder isdrilled for only four pins. We willdisregard the first “A” in the code aswell as the first “1”. But remember, even though the code is listed frombow to tip, the tumblers are measuredfrom tip to bow. The key is tip gauged. This will yield an effective code orbitting of D4, D4, B3, A1).Cylinder Combination

Our intention is not to go intomaster keying in this article, butbriefly, master keying can beaccomplished using an IBM orcompatible Mul-T-Lock master keyprogram or listings provided by Mul-T-Lock. The total number of pinvariations counting all external andinternal plug pins and master disks is43 for each chamber.

While Mul-T-Lock produces a widevariety of cylinders, from profile topadlock, we will provide ourdemonstration on a mortise cylindertypical to those frequently used inNorth American locks.

1.) Pick our key and our code.Remember, our card told us our keyprofile was a 006, our codes would bea A1, D4, D4, B3, A1. As we examineour plug, it is drilled only for fourtumblers so we will drop the first A1,even though our key has been cut forit.

2.) Load the spring in the shell.Load a combined pin into the chamberwith the spring. Be sure that thelarger end of the inner pin will facetoward the plug. (See photograph 10.)Repeat this step until all of the shellchambers have been filled. It’s easiestto start at the middle of the plug using

a follower and work to each end.3.) Load the external plug pins into

the plug.4.) Load the internal plug pins into

the external plug pins. Note thehardened pins designed to resistdrilling. (See photograph 11.)

5.) Using the cut key, make sure allinternal and external pins meet theshear line. Push the key only to theend of the plug. Remember, this key istip gauged against the cam andwithout the cam it is possible to pushthe key too far. This will effect readingthe tumblers. (See photograph 12.)

6.) Slide the plug into the cylinder.Remember to insert the plug slightlyturned so the combined pins will notfall into the wrong chamber if the keyslips during assembly. (Seephotograph 13.)

7.) Attach the tailpiece to the backof the plug. Use a thread sealer orstake the screws to prevent the screwsfrom backing out with lock use. (Seephotograph 14.)

The tailpiece acts as the key stop. Ifit loosens, the key will insert too farand will not allow the tumblers toproperly align. Also note the design ofthe tail piece. The tailpiece is solidwhich prevents a bent wire fromsliding through the cylinder plug andreaching the lock case to unlock thelockset.

Last month we showed the ways to service the locks on the Mercedes 190E. This month we will cover making a key to thecar. As you know this car uses a Two-Track High Security keyway with 13 cuts on one side and then the same cuts on the

opposite side. The way to make a key to this car is to remove the door cylinder, disassemble the cylinder and then make a key with cuts 2

through 13, and then progression the one missing cut in position one on the key. Use the following procedure to remove a doorlock and generate your key.

1. To remove the door lock cylinder without a workingkey you must remove the door panel, I suggest usingthe passenger side door.

2. Remove the trim around the inside release andelectric seat controls.

3. The three seat control buttons are removed bygently snapping them off. Below the second largestbutton is a small black plastic ring that must be gentlyremoved.

4. Once this is done, slide the trim piece forward andoutward to remove.

5. Remove the two Phillips-head screws that hold theseat control unit in place. It is necessary to removethese screws to give the inside handle release someroom when removing.

6. Remove the black plastic trim piece that goesaround the arm rest/handle, it unsnaps with a littlegentle pry from a small screwdriver. Behind the trimpiece is a l0mm bolt that must be removed.

7. Next, pull the inside handlerelease assembly forward toremove.

8. Remove the screw and trimpiece around the latch assembly.

9. As with most Mercedes builtbefore 1993, the door panel isheld on by plastic hooks instead ofthe more common push-in typeplastic clips. The hooks lock intocut-outs on the door.

10. To remove the panel you mustlift upward on the panel to removeit. I have found some to be easilyremoved and then some it maytake a minute or two of steadyupward pushing pressure to freeup the panel.

11. Next, remove the 4mm Allenretainer screw on the edge of thedoor. Disconnect the alarmconnector.

12. Next, remove the three latchscrews, you will need a #3 Phillipsscrewdriver.

13. The long tailpiece on the endof the key cylinder will have a“winged” tip on it. The wing tipinterconnects with the latchassembly, and can only beremoved by rotating the key in thelock cylinder and gently pullingoutward.

14. Since you do not have a key itwill be necessary to gently pull outthe key cylinder as far as it will goand then gently rotate the latchassembly in one direction whileturning the cylinder in the otherdirection. It may work better tohave the latch in the lockedposition or in the unlockedposition

15. Be careful of the alarmconnector wire. The part in thelatch assembly that the keycylinder operates in is made ofplastic, be careful.

16. To keep the tumblers fromjumping out of the lock insert akey with all number 5 cuts on it.Remove the two tension roll pinsby tapping them through the lockhousing with a pin punch.Separate the front section of thehousing from the rear section. Besure to mark all pieces. In thisphoto a tumbler fell out becausethe prepped key was not insertedto hold them in place.

17. The plug must rotate in orderto remove it from the shell. Usetwo small pieces of metal (likelock picking tension tools) to reachdown in the tumbler chambers tobring the tumblers to the shearline and turn the plug. Be patientas this may take some time to getall tumblers to the shear line.

18. After you have removed theplug you can then decode thewafers to make a working key tothe doors The tumblers will bestamped with a depth number. There should only be one missingtumbler, as the door lockcontained tumblers 2 through 13.Progression position 1 in the trunkto make a complete key.

CCTV seems very simple whenonly the camera, lens, and

monitor are considered; but whencomponents such as multiplexers, switchers and quads are added to theCCTV vocabulary, many of us seekthe comfort of more familiartechnology. There is no reason to letthis relatively new technology drive usaway from this profitable niche of thesecurity industry.

The goal of this article is tofamiliarize the reader with thecomponents of the CCTV system thatcreate the magic in a “regular” coaxial/BNC system .

SwitchersThe basic switcher is a simple

device that allows several cameras toconnect to one monitor and the viewerto see each scene in sequence. Theswitcher will display the scenescaptured by four to 32 cameras in anumber of optional modes.

The manual switcher simplyconnects four to 32 cameras anddisplays the camera of choice on themonitor by allowing the viewer tomanually press a switchcorresponding to that camera.

The homing switcher (also referredto as a homing sequential switcher )allows three types of switching modes.First, the automatic sequencingsimply switches from camera tocamera in a logical pattern, pausingfor a brief time to dwell on each scene. The dwell time may range from 1 to 60seconds or more and is optional to theviewer with about 5 seconds being avery popular range. Once the range ofcameras has been viewed thesequence begins again. This activityrepeats itself over and over unless oneor more cameras have been bypassedby a switch, or unless the homingmode is chosen, in which case theviewer can concentrate on oneparticular scene.

The bridging sequential switcherallows two monitors to be utilized. One monitor may operate in theautomatic sequencing mode while theother monitor is in the homing mode. This setup allows the viewer tocontinue to view all camera locationsin sequence while either closelyinspecting the activity of one chosenscene and/or recording that scene forany length of time.

Other features allow time/dategeneration and on-screen cameratitles to fully reference the activitybeing recorded or viewed. The mostrecent models of switchers areoffering freeze frame and 2Xenlargement options. During theplayback mode the viewer can chooseto display as many as 16 cameras onone screen simultaneously. Bothblack & white or color signals may betransmitted through the sameswitcher. The alarming features onsome switchers allow the cameras tooperate in conjunction with motiondetectors or other types of alarms soas to signal through the switcher toactivate the VCR and record theactivity at that location.

The advantages to using switchersare the lower cost and fewer monitorsto view. The disadvantages are thedependence on a limited number ofmonitors and the loss of observationtime while viewing only one scene at atime.

QuadsQuads have become very popular,

and rightfully so. The quad combineror compressor allows up to fourcamera signals to be displayed on onescreen simultaneously. The quadcombiner is compatible with alarmsand will switch from the four imagemode to a full screen display for closerinspection or more detailed recordingat the viewer’s discretion. The quadaccepts signals from cameras, VCRs,switchers and other devices andcombines them to create the display.

Many of the monitors on themarket today feature built-in quadand/or homing sequential switchers. These monitors allow up to fourcameras to be connected to thesystem at a time and are becomingvery popular with small businessowners and even home owners.

The splitter/combiner is anotherpiece of CCTV magic which allows thescenes captured by two cameras to bedisplayed simultaneously in a splitscreen or picture in a picture format. The screen may be split in a vertical orhorizontal display and reverted backto full screen display at will. Thepicture in a picture split can beadjusted for picture size with theinserted picture occupying 1/4 of thescreen being one example.

MultiplexersThe king of the magical devices in

the CCTV arena is the multiplexer. To understand how the multiplexerperforms its magic, we need to reviewa lesson learned in the last article,“Unwinding the Mystery ofRecording.” In that article we learnedthat the CCTV camera captures many“still images” and transmits themrapidly so that when they arereproduced onto the monitor screen, they appear to have a fluid motion. This reproduction is at such a highrate of speed that the human eyecannot detect the change from “still”to “still”.

The multiplexer captures theimages (fields) from each of severalcameras (up to 16) in rapid successionand assigns each an identity based onthe source. These images are in turntransmitted to a monitor, VCR, videoprinter or other device and recreatedto form the picture. This process isknown as encoding and decoding. The multiplexer can recreate theseimages one at a time or up to sixteenat a time, and do so in an orderlyfashion by assigning each camera aportion of the viewing screen or a fullscreen as desired by the viewer.

The multiplexer can also arrangethese signals in an orderly fashiononto recording tape via the VCR andthen retrieve them and create animage on the monitor screen inwhatever format is desired. Anexample of this is retrieving thesignals from the recording tape andchoosing to display any one camerascene and/or switching from camerato camera during playback. Themultiplexer can also be directed todisplay more than one scene duringthe playback mode. Just as you havechoices for viewing during normaloperation, you also have choicesduring the playback of recordedinformation. The multiplexerperforms much in the same way thatyour computer stores and retrievesdata depending on the commands yougive it.

The multiplexer is the product of anatural progression of devices startingwith the switcher and growingthrough the quad compressor.Tomorrow promises to bring moredevices to make the CCTV field moreeffective and easier to operate.

Video PrintersThe final device we will talk about

in this article is the video printer. Thisdevice allows hard copies of anyimage to be created for a permanentrecord that might be used to identifyobjects and/or individuals. Therecreated photographs taken duringthe commission of a crime which wesee on the nightly news are productsof the video printer. The taped recordof activity may be played back byothers (police or video services) andthe hard copies produced by theprinter within their system.

The implementation of thesecommon devices will allow you todesign a more useful and effectivesecurity system for your clients. Ihope that some of the mystery ofCCTV has been eroded and the magichas appealed to you and yourconfidence elevated.

The author would like to thank andacknowledge the continued assistance ofSean Horenstein in preparation of thisseries of articles.

Don’t take any-thing for gran-

ted. That was thelesson I learnedthis week.

A maintenancebuilding with asmall weak hasphad been burglar-ized, and I wascalled to repair it.The shackle on the hasp had been cut, tools and a generator had been taken. The building was secured by replacing

the burgled hardware with a hardenedmonster hasp, that included a thick, hardened shackle and through bolts. The hasp was secured with the AbusDiscus padlock.

I assured members of the complexassociation that no one could get inthe building as they couldn’t cut thelock or hasp. Guess what happened?Someone came along with a monsterbolt cutter and cut the shackle of thehasp, in two places, to get the lock off.

The hasp was still intact. Luckily, nothing was stolen. Someone musthave interrupted the robbers as thelock was left laying on the ground andthe doors were still closed.

Now, the problem was to find sometype of shackle guard to prevent thisfrom happening again. Then whilelooking over some of the AmericanLock products, I saw the AmericanSeries 2000 rekeyable padlock. Itlooked perfect for this job.

This padlock completely hides theshackle of the hasp. (See photograph1.) There is a slot in the back that thehasp shackle enters. The lock'shardened steel pin or locking boltgoes through the hole in the haspshackle locking it in place. (Seephotograph 2.) When the lock is onthe door every thing is concealed, soall you see is the lock its self.

This padlock is described asshackleless. The body width is 2-7/8”in diameter, 1-1/2” in thickness andthe locking bolt is 13/32” diameter. Itssolid body is chrome plated with a

WWhen you get a compliment from a Locksmith on aproduct, you know you've really done something

right! That's because Locksmiths are out in the fieldeveryday, and when a product doesn't perform asexpected, the Locksmith is the one who must spend timeto make it right.

That's why The National Locksmith's Reader's Choice(Top 100) Awards are so important. In our January issue,we asked you to vote for your favorite Locksmith Industryproducts. In this section, we profile those companieswhose products you selected for their excellence indesign, quality and performance.

We decided to permit locksmiths to select up to 100companies for this honor. However, only 87 received

enough votes to qualify, making this an exclusive honorindeed. For next year's Reader's Choice Awards, we willbe narrowing the number of possible winners, makingthis an even more exclusive award.

Worthy of special mention are five products includedin this section. The following products received anextraordinary number of votes: Gardall Safe Corp.'ssafes, HPC Inc.'s 1200CM Code Machine, MedecoSecurity Locks' Biaxial cylinder, Simplex AccessControls' Unican 1000 pushbutton lock, and Von DuprinInc.'s Series 99 Exit Device.

You will notice that these five products each have aspecial "Top 5" Logo next to them. This shows thespecial honor our readers conferred upon these winners.

JJ u s t a s l o c k -smiths come inmany shapes

and sizes, so dolocksmith shops. There are manydifferent specialtiesthat locksmithsprefer. Some speci-alize in Automotivework, others preferCommercial or Industrial customers. There are those that offer a full rangeof services - covering everything fromAutomobile locks to Commercial/Industrial hardware as well asResidential locks. Others service onlyResidential customers. No matterwhat type of customer you service, there are outside influences trying totake away a piece of your market.

The Automobile manufacturers areconstantly coming out with new locksthat are non-serviceable. Fortunately, there is a large group of aftermarketlock manufacturers supplying theindustry with the complete locks andservice parts required to repair andrekey these newer locks.

In the Commercial/Industrialmarket the competition comes fromthe manufacturers and distributorswho sell direct to the end user. Whilethey do have a noticeable percentageof this market, they are limited by thelack of after-the-sale service that theycan provide. These customers needprompt, reliable service and theyrecognize that the locksmith is stilltheir best source for this service.

The Residential market is different. Here there is nothing preventing non-locksmiths from eating up a largepercentage of this very lucrativecustomer base. The mass merchan-disers have been steadily taking awaymore and more of the residentialhardware sales. They do this byselling them locks and other hardwareat prices near or below the price thatthe locksmith pays for the same itemthrough traditional distributionchannels.

The residential lock customer fallsinto one of two categories:

1. The customer who is looking forthe least expensive lock that can befound. He is guided to the massmerchandisers by extensiveadvertising campaigns.

2. The customer who is looking fora lock that provides good security andholds up to daily use and abuse. Hecomes to the mass merchandiserbecause he is unaware that thelocksmith is his best source for bothquality and service.

Why is this happening? Lack ofknowledge on the part of the public.By and large, the general public doesnot know the difference between agood lock and a poor one. Thelocksmith must first educate thecustomer before they are willing topay a little more for a much betterlock.

How can the independentlocksmith compete with the lowpricing and marketing of the massmerchandising giants? By choosinghis weapon very carefully. Just asDavid slew Goliath, the locksmith cancompete for and win back theresidential customer.

What is this powerful new weapon?A new channel of distribution. Onethat provides quality hardware atcompetitive prices. Referred to as‘Private Label’ or ‘Distributor Brand’hardware, they are much more thanthat. It is a wide variety of hardware atvery reasonable prices.

There are several companies thatfall into this category (USCAN andU.S. Lock, for example). Because theywant your business, most of themhave developed a rather extensive lineof products. Remember, though, thatno matter how extensive a productline is or how low the cost is, it mustmeet your needs in order to beprofitable for you to stock. After all, which costs you more ... a $15 lockthat is sold a few days after it arrives,or a $5 lock that sits on your shelf fora year (or longer)? The trick is to finda product that is both cost-efficient

and sells quickly. Here are some questions that you

should ask when considering adding anew product line to your inventory. These Private Label locks are noexception. In fact, many locksmithsare asking these very questions rightnow.

•Will it easily replace existinghardware?

Yes, these locks are made to fitstandard door preparations. They areavailable in both 2-3/8” and 2-3/4”backset. In some cases, they haveadjustable backset latch and bolt units. If the door is properly prepared for astandard lockset, you should have notrouble installing the lock in yourexisting opening.

•What keyways are available? These locks are available in all

popular keyways. The suppliers knowthat your customer wants to be able touse his existing key in the new lock.Because of this, many of these locksare available on a wide variety ofkeyways. Other locks havereplacement cylinders available toallow keying to your customer’s key.

Some of the keyways availableinclude: Arrow, Corbin 60, Dexter,Kwikset, Lockwood, Russwin D1,Sargent (several sectional keywaysare available), Schlage C, Schlage E,Schlage C-K (composite), Weiser,Weslock, and Yale 8.

Not all of these locks are availableon multiple keyways. The ones thataren’t usually come with a Kwikset orWeiser keyway cylinder. Some areonly available on Schlage C keyway. These will key to the majority of locksin Residential use today.

•Is it attractive?Again, the answer is yes. As with

any product line, these locks areavailable in a variety of knob styles to

closely match existing lock designs. While the names of the designs maydiffer, the look is the same and manycustomers won’t even notice theminor differences in appearance. Thedeadbolts also closely resemble name-brand locks.

Private Label locks are alsoavailable in bright brass, antiquebrass, and brushed chrome finishes tomatch other existing hardware.

•Is it available in the function Ineed?

These locks are available in thesame functions as any otherresidential lockset. Passage, privacyand entrance locks are standardstocking items. Many locksmithscarry entry sets from several name-brand manufacturers but only carryone or two brands of passage andprivacy sets. Because of the lowercost, you can now afford to keep eachof these functions in stock.

The deadbolt locks are, of course, available in both single cylinder anddouble cylinder models.

•What about durability andwarranty?

Obviously these locks are not asdurable as Grade 1 locks costing over$200. But, they do compare favorablyto other residential locks currently onthe market. The durability variesdepending upon the type of lock youare looking for.

A relative newcomer to the PrivateLabel Residential grade knobset is theGrade 3 tubular knob lock. These arevery similar to some of the lighterbrand locks being sold at homecenters and hardware stores.

More popular with locksmiths isthe Grade 3 cylindrical lockset. Theseare sturdier than the tubular sets yetare priced low enough to allow thelocksmith to compete with the mass

merchandisers.Warranties will vary from supplier

to supplier but all distributors areeager to stand behind their sales.

•What exactly do these supplierscarry?

The lockset shown in thephotograph is a perfect example of aPrivate Label Residential gradelocksets available to the locksmith. This unit is a Grade 3 cylindrical lockmarketed by USCAN. This lock has anentrance function, an adjustable latchunit and uses the Weiser keyway. Thissame lock is also available inStoreroom, Passage, and Privacyfunctions. Standard finishes are 605 -Polished Brass, 609 - Antique Brass,626 - Satin Chrome, and 630 - SatinStainless Steel. The cost of this lock islow enough to easily sell itself tobargain-hunting homeowners. Is thisversatile enough for you?

In addition to the Grade 3 andGrade 2 residential locks, manyPrivate Labelers offer Grade 1 knobsand key-in-lever sets. Padlocks and filecabinet cylinders are also available atthe same low pricing. Replacementlocks, lever handles, and paddles forglass doors are another popular item.In fact, many Private Labelers carry awide range of quality hardware andsupplies for the locksmith.

Do you still think the locksmithcan’t compete with the massmerchandisers? Think again! It alldepends who is on your side. WithPrivate Labeling companies likeUSCAN and U.S. Lock as our allies, the tide will turn.

No longer will it be: The IncredibleShrinking Locksmith. Soon, a newgiant will emerge to reclaim itsrightful place in the residential lockmarket: The Amazing ColossalLocksmith!

II read somewhere that there havealways been thieves among us, butit took the invention of the

locomotive to create train robbers. The same line of thought would

suggest that without computers therecould be no “hackers.” Withoutairplanes there could be noskyjackers. Without the invention ofthe automobile, there would be no carthieves. And, without doors ... therewould be no need for me to write anarticle on door protection!

Why door protection? In mostinstances (especially residentialburglaries), statistics show that thethugs prefer - about 60 percent of thetime -to kick in the front door. Nofinesse - just brute force. Breach thebarrier, grab the goodies and ... git!

As locksmiths, part of our job is toadvise our customers how to bestprotect themselves from a directphysical assault on their front door (orback door as the case may be) by aheavy footed felon or a crowbar totingcrook. To help you help yourcustomer, and maybe slip an extrashekel or two into your pocket, thefollowing is a list of products designedto strengthen any door and keep the

bad guys and gals at bay. But! The first step in helping your

customer evaluate their doorprotection needs is a thoroughexamination of the door, the doorjamb and the hinges. No matter howstrong a lock, locking bar or auxiliarylock you put on a door, if the door is inpoor condition - you’re wasting yourcustomers money.

If the door is thin (under 1-1/2”thick) flimsy and weak then you haveto do something (up to and includingreplacing the door) to strengthen thedoor itself.

If the jamb is split or cracked, orthe strikes are loose or missing then, obviously, you need to recommendcorrective measures before going anyfurther.

If the hinges are loose, bent orhave screws missing, then you mustto correct those problems as well, ifyou’re going to give your customertheir money’s worth.

One of the first things that comesto mind is installing a deadbolt. Noone would deny that a deadbolt offersexcellent protection against kick-inattacks, provided it is properlyinstalled on a strong well-fitted door.

Frequently the amount of woodsurrounding the bolt is only 3/8” thickon either side of the deadbolt’s faceplate. Not much of a safety marginwhen Tommy Thug is working on thedoor with crowbar

To help strengthen the door in thiscritical area try a wrap around plate tomeasurably increase the strength ofthe door. These plates are offered byseveral manufacturers and vary inprice from about $10 retail to around$22 retail. The various style plates aredesigned to prevent the door edgefrom splitting, thus preventing the boltfrom being broken out of the door, when force is applied.

TT o further enhance the strengthand security of an entry door, latch guards are made by various

manufacturers. Latch guards aremade for outswing or inswing doorsand some models have interlockingfeatures that make the latch guard, and subsequently the door, a part ofthe jamb.

Mainly, latch guards prevent thugsand thugettes from “loiding” locks andtake away the thugs pry point aroundthe latch. Latch guards force thecrowbar toting crook to try to pryaway from the area around the latch

There are several products that can be used to increase the strength and security of a door - Wrap Around Plates,Latch Guards, Reinforced Strikes, and other accessories can be used. Pictured (left to right) are the Door Club, TheMAG 747 Heavy Duty Strike and the Don Jo Wrap Around Plate.

Safer Doors Thicker Wallets&Installing extra hardware doesn’t only make you money, it really does protect your customer.

where the door is most vulnerable tothat type of attack. Latch guards retailfrom $5 or $6 and all the way up to$90 for more advanced guards.

Latch guards can be used inconjunction with wrap around platesor as stand alone security. Either way, they are a viable alternative for yourcustomer and a profit maker for you.

Wrap Around Plates and LatchGuards are available from variousmanufacturers including HPC, Lori,Don Jo, MAG Engineering, andothers.

Using a Security Bar utilizes thetried and true wedge theory to keepsomeone from kicking in yourcustomer’s door. Simply place thebar under the knob, adjust thelength, push the pad firmly on thefloor -and the door is secure.Master’s Lock offers a security barretails for about $45.

Another way of strengthening adoor against kick-in attacks is byutilizing the Door Club by WinnerInternational (retail about $55). TheDoor Club is a blocking device thatmounts at the bottom of the door andcan withstand upwards of a ton offorce applied to the door.

Both Master’s Security Bar and

Winner’s Door Club are auxiliarylocking devices and can only be usedon the inside of the door. However, ifyour customer chooses either of thesedevices for their door security needsthey can be rest assured that inconjunction with a good, well installed, deadbolt, they can’t buy bettersecurity.

TT he next step in strengthening adoor is to check the door jambitself. Make sure that the jamb is

solid and not cracked or broken andthat the strikes (more on strikes later)are securely fastened to the frame. Ifthe jamb is loose - secure it. If it iscracked, splintered or broken - Then, fix it.

I have found that the fastest, simplest and most effective means ofrepairing a jamb that has beendamaged from a burglary attack orsplit because the structure settled is touse the Jamb Jacket by MajorManufacturing. Jamb Jackets come invarious sizes to fit either 1-3/8” doorsor 1-3/4” doors.

Once you have installed a JambJacket on a customer’s door jamb, thatjamb is repaired permanently! JambJacket prices vary according to sizeand length. A 36” long Jamb Jacket fora 1-3/4” door will retail for about $30.

If you’ve ever closely looked at theway a strike is mounted on theaverage wooden door, I’m sure you’venoticed that the strike is held to a 3/4”piece of soft lumber by 3/8” longscrews. And, if you’ve ever seen adoor jamb that has had the strikesbroken completely out of the jambafter the door was kicked in, you canunderstand why Jamb Jackets wereinvented!

In my opinion, if you can’t sell yourcustomer on the idea of letting youinstall security strikes on the door, you should, at the very least install theregular strikes with 2-1/2” screws. Atleast the longer screws will anchor thestrike in the jackstud surrounding thedoor and frame.

Heavy duty strikes like MeisterAtlanta’s 1280B ($18), 2000B ($25) orMAG Engineering’s Strike 3 ($12) and747 ($15) all magnify the security ofthe locks that they are designed toreceive. The ability of these strikes towithstand aggressive entry attempts isdue to the fact that they either screwedinto the studs behind the frame orhave a hardened pin that fits into ahole drilled in the stud for the strike.

F i n a l l y , i n m a k i n g y o u rcustomer’s door as strong andsecure as it can be, you need toexamine the hinges. If they areloose, tighten them and use 2-1/2”screws or longer to secure them tothe studs behind the frame.

If the hinge pins are exposed onthe exterior of the door, then drill asmall hole through one of the hingebarrels on leaf and into the hinge pinitself. Then insert a small roll pin inthe hole until it is flush. This willprevent the pin from being removedand the door taken down from thehinge side. Insert these pins in at leasttwo hinges on each door.

Also, Lori makes hinge mount (BP-1185 and 86) and door mount (BP-1180) hinge pins that will prevent awood or metal door from being priedout of the frame from the hinge side.Lori’s Hinge pins retail for between$2.70 and $6.60. Any way you look atit, that’s economical security.

So, The next time a customer callsyou and asks you to install a deadbolt, take a look at the total door and seehow you can increase your shekelintake by doin’ it with doors -Ya’llheaho!

INDUSTRY INTERVIEW…This month we were able to grab long time manufacturer

and locksmith Adam Weinraub. Adam is the president ofWeinraub Enterprises Incorporated, Pro-Lok division, amanufacturer of locksmith tools and manuals since 1986.

Adam, can you describe a little history on how you cameinto this field?

I was 10 years old and working at a community centeroperating the score board for the men’s basketball leaguewhen I was fortunate enough to meet Irv Postove, areferee for the games.

During this time I was also constantly losing the key tomy house. And, so that nobody would know I took mylone key up to the local locksmith to get some extra onesmade (I knew at 10 years old that a key made elsewheremight not work). When I walked in I was surprised to findmy friend Irv owned the lock shop.

I stayed and visited a while and when customers camein, Irv ordered me around to help him out. (I think hethought we were still at the basketball court.) This iswhen I realized that I was fascinated with locksmithing. From that day forward I spent every free momentpossible at the lock shop. The next four years were spentwith Irv and Ted, two of the bestlocksmiths that I will ever know, helping me perfect my skills.

What direction is this industryheaded in and what do you feel thefuture holds for the locksmith and hisrole in security?

I believe it is important to qualifymy response. I believe that there areseveral types of locksmiths that haverange from no change to significantchange.

We have Hobbyist locksmiths. Wehave Rural locksmiths (small city). Wehave Metropolitan locksmiths (bigcity). We have Security Professionals.

Each type of locksmith playsimportant, but different roles. Thebiggest change is the evolution inthese different types of locksmiths.

The hobbyist will show the leastamount of change. They’re here, theyhave always been here and will alwaysbe here.

The rural locksmith is the toughest spot to be in.These locksmiths work in small commun-ities. They, many times, have to perform several services for thecommunity in order to make a living. These locksmithsgenerally do not have other locksmiths to call and helpthem when they have a problem. Education is tough forthem to get unless they live near a large metropolitanarea. Yet, their communities depend and expect them toknow everything.

The metropolitan locksmith is the typical locksmith. Many people in this industry predict this segment of ourindustry will become extinct. I do not. The consumer willalways have a need for locks being rekeyed, unlockingcars, deadbolts installed, etc.... Yes, the security industryis and has been going through its own evolution withhigher technology and electronics.

The fact of the matter is, however, that as fast as thehigh technology and electronics segment is growing, thebasic needs of locksmithing will always be here.

I believe that the security professional is the newestsegment of our industry. This segment will handle themore sophisticated parts of security. Electronic security isthe wave of the future. It is exciting, challenging andprofitable. It is a step that many metropolitan locksmithswill be making. It will require additional training. This is

not an area to be afraid of, it is just thenext step on our evolution ladder.

When GM introduced the lockingsteering column, most locksmiths werefrightened by it. Now, because oftraining it is no big deal and secondnature to most locksmiths. When highsecurity locks such as Medeco startedto become prevalent, many locksmithswere frightened of them. Manylocksmiths confuse fright andpessimism with lack of education.Once the locksmith is properly trained, the fear will be replaced with profit andexcitement.

The bottom line is, that changesonly take place if there is a need. Thelocksmith will be forced to decide whatoptions and services they are going toprovide for their customers.

What changes do you see necessary ifthe locksmith is to be successful in thefuture?

One word. Marketing. I certainly

…INDUSTRY INTERVIEW(continued)

cannot provide marketing advice in acouple of paragraphs. The days ofplacing an ad in the yellow pages andwaiting for the phone to ring aregone. I have seen some locksmithcompanies do a terrific job in thewhole marketing department.Generally speaking, there are a lot ofgreat locksmith companies but, not alot of great locksmith companies thatknow how to market.

The average locksmith does nothave the expertise nor the resourcesavailable to them to do an effectivejob marketing their services. TheTrade magazines, Manufacturers and

Distributors are going to have to do abetter job providing marketingmaterials and training to thelocksmith.

On the other hand, locksmiths aregoing to have to wake up and realizethe importance of marketing. Thiswill not do any good, however, if thetime for education and implemen-tation of marketing plans are notfollowed through by the locksmith.

The Security Professional Councilis going in the right directionproviding much needed consumerawareness for the locksmith. Still, like the yellow page ad; thelocksmith can’t afford to expect thisto be the perfect answer to theproblem. Marketing is not whatothers do for you, Marketing is what

you do for yourself.Any additional comments?Yes. Pro-Lok started as a hobby,

not a business. I have always enjoyedmaking little tools that would makemy job as a locksmith easier. As Pro-Lok has continued to grow by leapsand bounds, there are someimportant things that we will neverlose sight of. If our company is tocontinue to grow and prosper, somust the locksmith. We will continueto provide education and assistancein any area that we can be of benefitto the locksmith. This includes allphases of locksmithing, whether wemanufacture tools for that area or notmakes no difference to me.

There I was,

trying to bal-ance our demonic-a l l y - p o s s e s s e db a n k a c c o u n t ,when Don’s wordspenetrated myconcentration.

“...So the pro-ducer and camera-man will be herearound four, tomorrow afternoon toshoot the first sequence,” Don wassaying.

That roused me from mybookkeeping stupor. When I hadmentally tuned Don out, he waschattering on about some newadvertising scheme – a frequent areaof conversation, lately. Had hechanged subjects while I was tunedout? Obviously, I had missedsomething.

“Wait, wait, wait!” I interrupted.“Cameramen and shooting sequenc-es? You mentioned a producer? Whois it? Disney? When did my agentcall?” Pawing my way throughcanceled checks and computerizedstatements, I grabbed the phone andbegan punching in a Los Angelesnumber. Don calmly removed thereceiver from my hand and firmlycradled it.

“What are you doing?” I said, tryingto repossess the phone. “I’ve got tocall my agent and find out which oneof my screenplays he sold.”

“Were you listening to anything Isaid?” Don patiently inquired.

“Well, of course I was. I heardevery word.”

“Then tell me what the cameramanand producer will be doing here, tomorrow afternoon.”

“Here? They’re coming here to ourstore?”

“Aha! I knew you weren’t payingattention. I ought to make you waitand find out when they get here, butthey’ll need some kind of script to

work from. Think you can whipsomething up for them by then?”

“You know it! Which script willthey be filming, and how long doesthis first sequence need to be?”

Don glanced at a note pad in hishand. “No more than ten or twelvelines of dialogue, according to Jan,” hesaid.

I was puzzled. Why would aHollywood movie producer come allthe way to Uvalde, Texas, at fouro’clock on a Tuesday afternoon, toshoot a ten-to-twelve-line filmsequence? Frowning, I looked intentlyat Don. I suspected we were notcommunicating, here.

“Clear me up on a couple of pointshere, will you? I think I must havemissed something,” I said. “They’recoming tomorrow afternoon to shoot ahalf-page sequence? Why?”

“So they can get us on cable by thefifteenth,” Don replied.

He made it all seem so logical. Idecided one of us had finally

flipped, and I wasn’t entirely surewhich one.

“I think we need to start over withthis entire conversation,” I said. “Now,who is coming tomorrow?”

“The producer and cameraman. Ofcourse, Jan will be here, too, to keepeverything running smoothly. Andshe’s arranged for a semi-professionalactor to take the major part. We’resupposed to round up a half-dozenpeople for the non-speaking roles.”

There he went, again, chatteringabout things I didn’t understand.

“Whoa! Jan who?” I asked.“You know, that little gal with

CableTime,” Don replied. The light began to dawn.“Does this have something to do

with that advertising program you’vebeen talking about lately?” I asked.

Don sighed and rolled his eyes.“What do you think I’ve been talking

about for the past half-hour?”

Now it was my turn to sigh. “Youwouldn’t believe me, if I told

you,” I muttered. “I must admit, Iwasn’t listening very closely. So, nowyou have my undivided attention. We’re talking about shooting a coupleof thirty-second commercials that willair on area cable TV, right? Andthey’re going to be here tomorrowafternoon to shoot one. OK, tell mewhat you want this first ad to be about, and I’ll get started on the script.”

Writing a thirty-second TVcommercial would be a snap, Ithought. Having already written acouple of full-length fast paced moviescripts, ten to twelve pages aboutlocks and keys should present noproblem, right? Boy, did I have somesurprises in store.

It is truly amazing how little can besaid in thirty seconds. Even that maybe too much. The listening audiencecan absorb only so much in a halfminute, I learned. Take from that thetime you must leave at the end fordisplaying your business information(to remind the viewer who the ad wasabout), and there’s not much left towork with.

After a dozen false starts, we finallyhit upon an idea. We would establish atheme for all our original ads and letone feed upon another, so to speak. After much intense deliberation (someof it rather loud and interesting to ourbusiness neighbors) we decided upona negative approach: our maincharacter would be a burglar, trying toply his trade and being continuouslyfoiled by A-1 Lock & Key—you know, the old coyote-versus-roadrunnertheme.

We decided to establish the maincharacter—our burglar-in the

first ad by means of a shadowy“testimonial” format, similar to an adbeing run for sugar-frosted cornflakes. Jan made an appropriate blackmask for our actor, and I blocked outa script for him. A piece of cake.

Wrong again.That simple little one-character,

one-scene shoot took no less thanthree hours to perfect! Over and over, the burglar read his lines from the cuecards, testing pace and tone, inflectionand volume. Finally, after cutting andpatching a number of lines, we got thelength so it was not rushed, butmoved right along. Then the lightingwas adjusted, in preparation for initialshooting. The lights necessary tocreate the silhouette effect caused aglaring reflection on the burglar’sglasses (which he was wearing overhis black eye-mask, in order to readthe cue-cards).

We tried tying the mask over hisglasses, instead, but then his

lenses steamed up, and he couldn’tsee to read his lines. Finally, we gotthe mask positioned so it sufficientlycovered the glasses to modify theglare without obstructing vision. Thenwe had to work on Jan’s holding thecue cards close enough for the burglarto read them, without her appearingon camera.

That was the afternoon and theevening of the first day.

Camera call, the next morning, wasfor 8 a.m. The crew had another shootat 11, and wanted to be sure there wastime.

“Three hours? You’ve got to bekidding. After yesterday, we’ll haveeverything wrapped in an hour ortwo,” I predicted.

I think that one took three and ahalf hours.

I may never again be able to facethe half-dozen friends we conned intoassuming non-speaking roles. “It willtake just a few minutes before you goto work,” I had said, believing it.

We’re confident this form ofadvertising will benefit our businessgreatly. However, I’m not sure we’llever recoup the cost of all the dinnertabs we’ll be picking up in the way ofthank-you’s for those who helped usaccomplish it.

That night, as I closed my eyes, Isighed, remembering how I had feltwhen I thought I had sold ascreenplay to Hollywood. Then Idrifted off, dreaming of hearing Don’svoice again: “The producer andcameramen are coming tomorrowafternoon,” he said. Only this time, headded, “Hurry! It’s Spielberg on thephone!”

FFor a variety of reasons,

servicing high securityautomotive locks has been the

focus of only a small number oflocksmiths throughout the country. The biggest reason by far is thelimited number of opportunities thereare for working on high security in theUnited States. For some locksmiths, the number of high security jobs hehas a chance to do in a year does notjustify the expense of a specializedmachine and the investment inpreviously hard-to-come-by parts.

Still, as the trend for more securevehicles continues, the more newlocking systems the locksmith isintroduced to each year. And witheach passing year, there are morehigh security systems that are laid atthe locksmith’s door step. And despitea reluctant market, growth in highsecurity is actually expected toincrease dramatically over the nextfew years; This growth being theresult of a couple of factors: Automanufacturers’ developing vehiclesfor an international market, and astringent European auto securitystandard.

Despite the rather slow transition, the auto industry has been movingtowards an international market.Barring the cultural differences of thevarious countries (driving on the leftor right side of the road, etc.) thataffect car design, it is much moreeconomical for a manufacturer tocreate one vehicle for all internationalmarkets than it is to create a vehiclefor each market. This, of course, means that even the locking systemsmust pass an international standard ofacceptance.

Who sets these standards?Actually, no one individual sets them. However, the European market

employs probably the most stringentrequirements for vehicle security andlocking than any single entity in theworld. And until the need for openinginternational markets became anecessity, the United States enjoyedrelative independence from theserequirements, and thus insulated thelocksmith from much of the strangeand exotic keying and locking systemsused abroad. Today, however, as webecome less and less isolated, themore and more these new systemswill become a part of our life here.Current Systems

There are two means by which tocreate a “high security” lockingsystem - physically or electronically.

In the States, manufacturers havetypically left electronic security up tothe auto alarm industry, and onlyrecently have started incorporatingsystems that integrated locking with

alarming.Probably the most successful

attempt at creating an electronic highsecurity locking system has been theVATS/PASS system by GeneralMotors introduced in the 1986Corvette. The colossal success of thissystem in deterring auto theft has leadto the use of the system in more andmore GM vehicles.

In principle, VATS is simple. A keyincorporating a resistor pellet is usedto turn the ignition lock to ON. Inorder to start the car, the resistancevalue of the pellet must match thevalue required by the vehicle’sonboard computer.

While the VATS key is nothingmore than a simple single sided keyfrom a mechanical perspective, theincorporation of the resistor pelletelevated the key to high securitystatus.

FFortunately for the locksmith,

keys and diagnostic equipmentare available through

companies like Strattec (VATS OEMand formerly Briggs & Stratton), andAll-Lock (who has just introduced afull line of single and double sidedVATS keys and VATS diagnosticequipment).

The introduction of GM’s VTD(Vehicle Theft Deterrent) or Passlocksystem for 1996 is another example ofintegrating electronics andmechanical systems to deter theft.Fortunately, this system may havelittle effect on a locksmith’s ability toservice the vehicle. (See GM’s VTDsystem on page 11 of this issue.)

While still only on paper, there areindications that Ford will beintroducing the Passive Anti-Theft(dubbed PATS) system, underscrutiny in Europe for several yearsnow, on the new 1986 Taurus.

Developed in conjunction withtechnology developed by TexasInstruments, this system utilizes amechanical key with a specializedtransmitter in the bow. When a key isinserted into the ignition an RF signalis transmitted from an antenna locatedaround the face of the lock and intothe key, the blade serving as the key’santenna. The signal from the vehiclecharges a special electrical device, called a transponder, on board thekey. The charge is then used totransmit a 128 bit encoded messagefrom the key back to the vehicle. If theproper code is transmitted, the vehicleis allowed to start.

Still, electronics is a very small partof the high security picture. Morehigh security systems are developedor built around varying mechanicalattributes of keys, locks and lockingsystems, most of them brought infrom overseas. Those used in theUnited States include the dimple cutkey used by Fiat and BMW;sidewinder systems used byMercedes, Lexus, Mazda, BMW,Volvo and Saab; Tibbe system used byFord/Merkur and Jaguar; and thePorsche High Security system thatuses cuts placed at 45° to the keyblade.

Used widely in Europe and broughthere on the BMW is the deadlockfunction. With this feature, the doorlock is turned passed the normal lockposition (typically 12/6 o’clockposition) and rotated to a deadlocking

position (typically 9/3 o’clockposition). When deadlocked, thelinkage for all door locks and trunklock are mechanically locked intoposition, making any manipulationwith an opening tool almostimpossible without damaging a part ofthe system.

With the enormous number ofthese cars on the road today, there is agreater need to find qualifiedlocksmiths to service them. Sure, most of these manufacturers make italmost necessary for the owner of avehicle to go back to a dealer for evena duplicate key. However...more oftenthan not, the dealer himself does notwant to be bothered with the work, and gladly passes onto a locksmiththat does work for him.

Plus, dealers often need on-the-spot, gotta-have-it-done-today keying. The sad part of the dealer industry isthat when a customer needs a lockrepaired or replaced, unless the dealeris already using a competentlocksmith, the customer either endsup with two separate keys, or pays fora whole new set of locks. This is ouropportunity!Get With The Program

There’s no question that gettingstarted in servicing High Securityvehicles will cost a little bit: There’sthe manuals and training, the newmachines, the new locks and supplies.Eventually, however, with propermarketing and planning, thisinvestment will make more than itsreturn.

For example, the first three yearsin business I received fewer thanthree calls to do a high securityvehicle. After turning down the thirdjob due to lack of equipment andsupplies, I purchased all the necessaryequipment, took several classes onhigh security automobile locks, bought the proper manuals, and thenmarketed my new skill and ability tothe dealers in town. The first year Iserviced in excess of 15 high securityvehicles. At this point the equipmentand supplies paid for themselves andeverything from that point on wasprofit.

Plus, the dealers now referred meto customers and other dealers thathandled vehicles with high securitylocking systems. I keyed locks to theircustomer’s cars; making the dealerrich and the customer happy. Inaddition to this, all the lockouts

fielded by the dealer were referreddirectly back to me.Getting Started

To get started, get knowledge.Follow The National Locksmith andThe National Locksmith AutomobileAssociation as we train you inservicing these high security systems.Take as many seminars on thesevehicles as possible. Purchasemanuals, etc.

Probably the largest purchase willbe the key machine. Severalmanufacturers make excellent highsecurity key cutting machines atvarying cost: HPC, Silca, Framon, andBorkey to name a few.

As for supplies, at this point, theonly supplier of aftermarket highsecurity locks, lock components, keying and service kits, etc. that Iknow of is Auto-Security Products(ASP). A catalog, application guideand pricing can be obtained from anASP distributor.

Keyblanks are manufactured bySilca and Ilco. Contact a Silca or Ilcodistributor for information and cost.

Normally, I would not considerresponding to any anonymouscorrespondence that was critical innature. In this instance, I’ll make anexception (without naming thetipsters or the tips involved) sincethis is an issue I’ve wanted toaddress for sometime.

Yes, there have been instanceswhere tips by the same author haveappeared simultaneously in TheNational Locksmith and other tradepublications. And, yes, there havebeen instances where tips, again bythe same author, which appeared inThe National Locksmith laterappeared in another publication.

On a practical level, there’s reallynothing that can be done to preventsuch duplications from occurring. Why not?

Mostly because of the printingschedules that any publicationfaces. What you are reading here -right now - written back in March. There may be tips in this current

Technitip column that were sent tome as early as January - or before!

Consequently, if a tipster sendsme a tip in January and sends thesame tip to another publication atthe same time or at a slightly laterdate; the chances of the tip beingused by both magazines would befairly good since the separatecolumns are being written monthsin advance of their actualpublication date.

Now, if I were to receive a tipthat I knew for certain had appearedin one of the other publications, Iwould not use it. If, on the otherhand, I receive a good, usable tipand I have no indications or proofthat it has been or will be submittedto, or used by, another publication... you can betchur boots I’ll print it.I believe other column editors feelthe same way.

The only realistic way this sort oftip duplication can be avoided byany publication is if each tipstermakes it a matter of personalconscience to submit their tipexclusively to one magazine.

I feel the majority of tipsters arehonorable and submit their tips to asingle magazine. No doubt there aresome tipsters who submit identicaltips simultaneously to multiplepublications in an effort to getinformation to as many locksmiths

All Lock Auto Service Lists WinnerRestricted Keyway LockReplacement

Have you ever been called to alockout where picking the lock justturned out to be impossible? Thisrecently happened to me on a servicecall to a post office. Normally, in thissituation, I would reach for my drilland drill the plug at the shear line, install a new plug or lock and be donewith it.

The reason that I did not followthat course of action in this case wasbecause the keyway was a restrictedkeyway and if I had destroyed theplug, it would have taken six to eightweeks to get a new one. My customerdidn’t want to wait that long, andneither did I.

Fortunately, I found a way to savethe restricted plug, get the customerthrough the door and, get therestricted lock back in service almostimmediately. All without destroyinganything but the mortise cylinder.

I inserted an uncut keyblank in thekeyway and, as shown in illustrationone, I drilled a 5/32” hole just abovethe plug and shearline.

After carefully drilling througheach of the six top pin chambers, Iremoved the uncut blank and used acurved pick to push the bottom pinsdown past the shearline, whichallowed me to turn the plug andunlock the door.

Then I simply replaced the drilledmortise cylinder shell with anothershell from the same manufacturer (thespacings are the same on both therestricted and non-restricted plugs),rekeyed the lock to a new combinationand had a very happy customer.

STRATTEC Pinning Kit And JacketWinnerEasy Code Machine Check

Next to my key duplicator, I keep aSchlage cylinder pinned to 99999 witha key that is code cut to those depths. This specially pinned cylinderprovides me with a fast and easymethod of frequently checking theaccuracy of my key machine withoutwasting any blanks.

It is especially helpful whenduplicating large numbers of keys at atime for one customer. If yourmachine loses it’s adjustment duringthis situation, you can wind up with alarge number of miscuts in a veryshort time.

So, periodically, I grab a key out ofmy throw-a-way can and duplicate the“9” key. Then I try that key in my “9”cylinder. If it turns smoothly, then Iknow my machine is duplicatingproperly and I continue on with mycustomers keys.

If try the key and the key and itturns hard, then I know my duplicatoris cutting high. If the key sticks, andthen turns easily, I know the machineis cutting low. Regardless, themachine needs adjusting.

I also use this handy method forchecking the spacing when I changecutters. If the key turns hard aftersetting the depth adjustment, I turnthe plug about 90°, leave the key inplace and, while holding the cylinderin my hand, I hit the top and bottom ofthe key bow on my vise a couple oftimes.

When I turn the key back to theremoval position and take the blankout, I will either see impression markscentered in the cuts or up on theramps. If the dimples are centered onthe flats then the machine is justcutting high but the spacing is O.K. Ifthe marks are on the ramps, then thespacing is off.

If you try this tip you might want touse test cylinders for the morepopular locks that you are likely tocome across in your area of thecountry.

Here’s a way that I have found tokeep my work area clean and free ofmost of the shavings that aregenerated when I find it necessary todrill a safe door, or try to keep myhole in a in-floor safe debris-free.

Get several barrel-type magnets(like the ones used in contact switchesfor alarms or enunciators). When youdrill a floor safe, you can use one toremove the shavings from the holeand keep it clean. When you drill aregular safe door, you can place oneor more under your drill point to keepthe shavings from falling to the floor.

Technitips Handbook WinnersRenault Slot Key Fix

A customer complained that theirignition key could not be insertedcompletely into the ignition, thuspreventing them from starting the car.The key was an RN30 (X147).

Normally when you insert this keyin the ignition, the key lifts the lockingpin in the back of the ignition andallows it to fall through the hole in theblade of the key. Something was

obstructing the movement of thelocking pin and I couldn’t determinewhat without disassembling the entireignition.

The customer did not want to go toany expense on this nine-year old carand asked me to try to find analternative to the expensivedisassembly.

As shown in illustration six, I filedthe hole out to a slot. This allowed thekey to bypass the locking pin andallowed the customer to start the car. They drove off happy, and I haven’theard of any problems with their new-style key.

Editor’s Note: The lock you arespeaking of belongs to the Renault andis known as the slot key. The smallobstruction they had is the steeringwheel lock mechanism. TT ake a lookat the alltime tough-

est linkage systemto come off theFord design boardsince General Mo-tors introduced theheavily guardedmodular lock sys-tems in the mid-eighties. This challenging vehicle, originally produced by Euro-Fordunder the name of Mondero, is nowbeing mass sold under the banner ofFord and Mercury here in NorthAmerica with essentially the same

body style and carrying two newversions of tag names known as FordContour and Mercury Mystique.

Last winter, my technicalassistance hot line advice was toforget the quick remedy of lockouttooling and instead go through thedrawn-out process of obtaining thecorrect key code. If the caller was notequipped to do code work or didn’thave extensive picking experience, then I simply advised them to turn thejob down until better information onthe vehicle was obtained.

That was when conditions werecold. Now we’re able to research thesame vehicles again during a seasonof above 45°F temperatures. This timearound proved that the wintercautions published in the 1995 Z-ToolSystem Manual do not apply above the45° threshold. Revealing Research

After removing both passengerside door panels, I realized why somany encountered so much trouble in

getting the vehicles opened. Both theContour and Mystique have incommon a new linkage system. Theunique design does not use thecommon linkage rod to connect themanual lock button to the lock latch, but instead uses a throttle like cablemuch like those used on motorcycleswhich houses both the manual locklinkage and the door handle linkage.(See photograph 1.)

The use of cables encased within aplastic sheathing is not a new idea andhas been worked around on othermodels, resulting in quick damagefree openings, but this fortified systemgoes a step further. The front doorcable feeds through a grommet whichleads the cable into a white plastic boxthat houses the lock latch assembly, obscuring all latch components from

It is very easy to remove this strip;however, there is an extra expense thecustomer must bare in doing so.Before executing the removal of thefront door weatherstripping, makeyour customer aware that this Fordmodel uses a lead-like center coreweatherstrip that is not reusable onceremoved. This is due to unavoidabledistortions to the part caused by theremoval. (Fords Probe also utilizes thesame soft core design.) Any Fordbody man will tell you that even thegentlest of care will not save the $21part.

In addition, there is yet anothervalid reason to remove excessivepressure. The windows installed onthese models are of the all timethinnest I have noted in the 12 yearsI’ve tracked the how-to art of caropenings. Thin, cold or hot windowscombined with tool and wedgingpressure also increase the chances ofa broken window.

Once you have completed the firststep of entering the door cavity then, depending on your particularsituation, use one of the followingoptions for unlocking the vehicle.

Option 1 - If the vehicle is equippedwith power locks, and the battery isstill good, simply depress the top ofthe power lock switch. (Seephotograph 4.)

Option 2 - Depress the manual lockbutton. This may require some degreeof tool twisting, but it is possible toaccomplish. (See photograph 5.)

Option 3 - As a last resort positionthe tool behind the inside releaselever and twist the tool to move thehandle. Because this is an activerelease lever, the door will unlock andopen. (See photograph 6.)

TT his article will provide a briefdescription of DORMA’s ED 800“low energy” power operator,

then explore the many optionsavailable for activating the device.

The ED 800 differs from “high-energy” automatic operators whichare typically difficult to install andwhich power open and power closewith significant force and speed. When actuated, the ED 800 operateswithin the parameters of ANSIA156.19, Standard for Power-Assistand Low-Energy Power OperatedDoors. The low energy units do notrequire complicated safety mats, safety beams, guide rails and otherdevices necessary for the high-energyautomatics, as the operational speedsand forces of these units present nohazards to pedestrians. The differencebetween low and high energy units issufficient that the fully automatic unitsare governed by a separate standard,ANSI A156, Standard forPower-Operated PedestrianDoors.

The ED 800 is based on theDORMA TS 83 surface applieddoor closer. It offers the sameoperating features as the TS 83,including sweep, latch, backcheck, and adjustablespring power. Under normaloperating conditions whenassistance is not required, theED 800 functions as a manualdoor closer.

The “brain” of the ED 800 is the on-board microprocessor. At firstapplication of power, the ED 800completes an initial “learn cycle”which communicates all importantoperational characteristics about theopening to the microprocessor.Thereafter, the microprocessorconstantly monitors opening andclosing speeds/forces. If it detects theslightest deviation from its operatingparameters, it will immediatelyrespond to ensure user safety andconvenience.

Power failures present no problemsfor the ED 800... it simply operateslike a standard door closer. Whenpower resumes, the unit completes alearn cycle and returns to itsoperational state.

The ED 800 microprocessorincorporates two slide selectorswitches and four user adjustmentsthat are configured at the time of

installation. This permits the unit to beuniversal for virtually any opening, assimple adjustments are all that arerequired to tailor it for each individualapplication. One of these field-selectable functions provides eitherlow-energy or power assisted opening.Low-Energy Function

In the low-energy mode, the door ispowered open upon activation withinthe ANSI A156.19 speed and forceguidelines. The door opens to aposition that is adjustable between 85degrees and 115 degrees, and stays inthe hold-open position for a periodlasting from five to 60 seconds, afterwhich the door begins its normalclosing sequence.

The ED 800 is notable for its safetyfeatures. In the opening cycle, thedoor exerts a maximum of 15 lbs atthe latch edge. If an obstacle isencountered, the power to the door isreduced, allowing the door to stop and

remain stationary in abalanced state from which itcan easily be pushed open orclosed, as needed. The doorremains in the balanced statefor the selected hold-opentime, which begins at the pointthat there is no doormovement.

The maximum forcegenerated at the latch edge ofthe door during the closingcycle is also 15 lbs. Again, thedoor balances if an obstacle is

encountered, and remainsbalanced for a predeterminedperiod prior to initiating theclosing sequence.Power-Assist Function

The power-assist functionallows the door user to exertonly minimal opening force inorder to negotiate the opening. When the power assist isactivated, the unit responds byopening the door approximate-ly 1”, thereby alerting the userthat it is active. The door canthen be opened with a reducedopening force that is adjustablefrom 1/2 pound to 5 pounds, asmeasured from the latch edgeof the door.

The power-assisted reduc-tion of opening force remainsactive for a period equal to thetime the unit senses doormovement, plus the duration ofthe time-delay setting, after which thedoor begins to close under the controlof the TS 83 door closer.Activation Options

Activation of the ED 800 can be byany normally open circuit that ismomentarily closed to signal the door.Activation options include hard-wiredswitches, radio frequency transmit-ter/receiver units and both motionsensors, and a wide variety of otheroptions including card readers, keypads, palm readers and othersecurity-related access controldevices.

There is also a push and go featurefor doors fully dedicated toaccessibility which must assistopening at all times. Push and go is astandard, field-selectable option thatactivates the door when it is openedmore than 1”. Activation can be bypush and go only, or by push and goin conjunction with other options.Push and go will “abort” when thedoor is opened rapidly by an able-bodied pedestrian, saving wear andtear on the unit. Activation By Hard-Wired Switch

Wall or frame switches are oftenhard wired directly to the ED 800external connector. These actuatingdevices should be located at asufficient distance to allow time for thedoor to open after the signal is sent. They are normally installed 32” to 42”above the finished floor.

The ED 800 has an externalconnector located on the side of the

controller module that can beremoved to allow easy access to theterminal block screws. (Seeillustration 1.) When wiring, remember to provide sufficient wire(maximum 18 gauge wire) to reachthe connector when it is plugged backinto the controller.

The wall switch should be mountedat a junction box (provided by others);two wires are then run from theswitch to the operator. Each wire isconnected to a switch terminal and theswitch backing plate is attached withthe screws provided.

The 800 FS-1 frame switch isspecifically suited for installation in 1-3/4”x4” frames Installation of the 800FS-1 is equally straightforward. (Seeillustration 2.) A junction box isgenerally not used with this type ofswitch.Radio FrequencyReceiver/Transmitters

DORMA’s 800 RFR-12 radiofrequency receiver is intended for useon applications where hard wiring isnot practical such as on retrofitinstallations or where it provides aspecial convenience over hard-wiredactuators. The receiver can be used inconjunction with wall-mounted, hand-held or key chain transmitters, all ofwhich are available from DORMA.

To insure the receiver is onlyactivated by the intendedtransmitter(s), it must be encodedwith a sequence of numbers thatmatch those of the transmitters. The

code is determined by thepositions of the 10 smallswitches located on thereceiver board. Any combina-tion of on (closed) or off(open) positions can beselected by using a smallscrewdriver or ball point pen. After selecting the code, besure that it is recorded so thatit can be duplicated in anytransmitter intended tooperate the door.

The receiver antenna isinstalled by threading it to theconnector on the ED 800. Thereceiver should be located inclose proximity to the ED 800unit, away from directmoisture, and permanentlyanchored. The antenna shouldbe positioned to be clear ofany metal structures. (Seeillustration 3.)

Transmitters should providereliable operation from a distance ofabout 50’ from the receiver, thoughthe environment and location of bothtransmitter and receiver will affectrange.Transmitter Options

Radio frequency transmitteroptions used in conjunction with the800 RFR-12 radio frequency receiverinclude both permanently mountedand portable units. The 800 WS/RFT-1wall switch with radio frequencytransmitter is, like the receiver, suitable for outdoor use, but shouldnot be exposed to direct moisture.Installation is a simple matter ofanchoring the backplate of the wallswitch securely to the mountingsurface at a height approximately 42”above the finished floor. Afterselecting a transmitter code thatmatches that of the receiver, the nine-volt battery should be connected.

Hand-held and key chaintransmitters provide flexibility inapplications where a limited numberof known individuals will require theassistance of the ED 800. Thetransmitters are battery operated andcan be made operable simply bysetting their codes to match that of thereceiving unit.Motion Sensors

Motion sensors activate doors thatare dedicated entirely to accessibility. The 800 MS-1 Motion Sensor detectsonly approaching traffic and ignoresdeparting traffic, allowing the door to

The motion sensor must becentered in the opening andmounted at a height between6’6” and 9’8” above the floor. Itshould not be exposed directlyto precipitation. If it is for thepull-side of the door, it shouldbe located so the detectionpattern is beyond the swing ofthe door. To avoid falsesignals, it should be fastenedsecurely and should notvibrate.

The sensor cannot beplaced behind panels or othermaterials. No objects which mightmove or vibrate should be in thedetection field, nor should there beneon signs in the field.

To install the sensor, remove thecover by inserting a small screwdriverbetween the base and the cover andgently prying them apart. Prepare themounting surface according to the full-size template packaged with thedetector, then run the wire providedwith the detector from the ED 800 toit.

Remove the plug connector fromthe detector and wire according to thewiring diagram provided. Replace theplug connector and fasten the detectorbase securely. Select the detectionpattern according to the instructions.Presence Sensors

External safety devices such asmats, guide rails, and sensors are notrequired with the ED 800. However, asafety circuit is built into the unit. Useof the optional 800 PS-1 presencesensor connected to the safety circuitprohibits opening of the door if anobstacle is sensed at the time ofactuation. The 800 PS-1 presencesensor is an active infrared detectorwhich is driven by amicroprocessor. This allows fora detection zone very close tothe floor (approximately 12”),regardless of what thebackground or target condi-tions are. Using a pulsed, infrared signal, the presencesensor continuously scans adetection zone that has apyramidal shape with arectangular cross section. Thesensor’s photodiode contin-uously measures the reflectedsignal. As soon as an object or

person enters the detection zone, thereflected signal changes and adetection signal is sent to the ED 800.If the person or object stands still inthe detection pattern, thedetection/response continues for aperiod of time ( adjustable from threeto 25 minutes). After this time, thepresence sensor determines that theimmobile object is part of thebackground. The unit adapts to thenew background, and the door closes.

The presence sensor must bemounted at a height of 6’3” to 8’ abovethe floor. The sensor should not beexposed to direct rain. It cannot beplaced directly behind false ceilingpanels, and should be located in thecenter of the opening overlooking thehinge side. When the door is openedto the 90 degree position, there shouldbe no obstructions in front of thesensor.

Installation begins with theremoval of the left end cap. The setscrew is loosened to allow removal ofthe mounting bracket, which is thenanchored to the wall or ceiling.

To run the cable, locate the plugconnector on the left side of the

detector. Each of the plasticend caps has two pre-cut slotswhich can be popped out forthe cable to pass through. Ifnecessary, there is a recess onthe back of the mountingbracket to allow the cable topass from one end of thedetector to the other. There isno need to drill any holes inthe aluminum housing.

It should be noted that the800 PS-1 Presence Sensorrequires an independent 24volt power supply. TheDORMA 08039980 Transfor-mer 120 VAC is recommended.Remove the orange plugconnector from the presence

sensor and make the electricalconnections as shown in illustrationfour. Then slide the sensor into themounting bracket, selecting one of thethree mounting angles. For the initialsetting, the 26 degree angle isrecommended.

Tighten the set screw and replacethe plug connector, then followinstructions for selecting the detectionpattern.Maximum Flexibility

The ED 800 is a highly flexible,cost-effective solution to the problemof making buildings accessible to thephysically challenged and to thosewho need only occasional assistance. Its flexibility derives in part from thefact that it is available in one universaldesign with a choice of two armoptions that permit it to be configuredfor all installations, push-side and pull-side mounts and left- or right-handdoors.

Full-size templates and simple doorand frame preparation makeinstallation of the ED 800 a one-persontask. The wide range of activatingoptions can further ease installation

and enhance the value andfunction of the ED 800 fortruly barrier-free access.

We’ve all heard :“You worked onmy so-and-so andnow my this-and-that isn’t working.”

Well, for thebelieve it or notcolumn there aretwo procedures(one avoidable theother correctable) that may leave thecustomer angry and the locksmithscratching his head. Here are thecomplaints -

#1. Avoidable - You opened my carand now my battery’s dead.

#2. Correctable - You made keys formy car and now it doesn’t run right.

While these problems may notappear right after service or seem tobe related to the service youperformed, they very well may be.According to separate bulletinsreceived by technical writer TomMazzone, locksmiths should be awareof the two following service problemswith GM vehicles.

1. Parasitic Battery Drain causedby damaged alarm switches isprevalent on vehicles with factoryalarms where the security system isarmed/disarmed by switches attachedto the door locks. During an openingthese switches often become damagedand stick in a permanently closedposition. This, in effect, causes aminute yet constant drain on thebattery (thus the term “parasitic”).

When opening a vehicle locksmithsshould always question the vehicleowner about previous attempts atopening the vehicle. A wedge andlight should be used and inspection ofthe back of the lock should be madewhen possible. If damage is evident, inform the customer beforepreceding.

2. Driveability Problem after aservice procedure requiring batterydisconnection. On GM vehicles, keeping the vehicle running smooth isaccomplished by the Idle Air Control

(IAC) and the Electronic ControlModule (ECM), creating the correctfuel/air mixture and idle speed basedon information received by varioussensors throughout the fuel andemission systems. The correct logic ordata is retained in the ECM as long aspower is available. When the batteryhas been disconnected, thisinformation is lost. For locksmiths, this may happen while doing serviceon an airbag equipped vehicle.

Once the battery is reconnected, and with the loss of the correct logic, the vehicle may experience bouts ofhigh and wildly fluctuating idling. Tocorrect the problem, start the vehicleand let it idle for 20 minutes or let thecustomer take it for a four or five miledrive. This allows the ECM and IAC toreadjust and record the settings again.

As a tidbit, an automotive supplyhouse, S&S of Elmhurst, Illinois, intends to offer a new service to theauto dealers who have auto alarmsystems purchased and installed byS&S.

Should a customer who owns avehicle with an S&S alarm systemever get locked out of the vehicle, theowner can simply call S&S. Uponverification of ownership, S&S willtransmit a signal via satellite to unlockthe car.

Is this service a wave of the future?I doubt it, but I’m not going to bet thefarm on it not happening either.

For mystery lovers, try this out. Anovel involving locksmithing bysomeone who knows the trade! “TheWright Special” is a mystery in whichan antique bicylce collector and aforensic locksmith join forces toinvestigate a murder. Written by MaryEllen Cooper of Stillwater, Oklahoma(Wife of Charles Cooper, RL, andmother of Ralph Cooper, CML) thebook is available for $7.95 (plus UPSshipping charges) by calling theauthor toll-free at (800) 619-4771.Coming soon to area bookstores.

Bill Gray of Bill’s Lock & Key,Spencer, Indiana, reports to us on anew American made motorcyclecoming out of East Troy, Wisconsin -Buell. With close ties to HarleyDavidson (they own 49 percent ofBuell), the Buell is available throughHarley distributors but is a far cryfrom the low rider image created andowned by Harley. Instead, the Buellhas the sleek tour/race profile, typicalof many of today’s bikes.

As for us locksmiths, the ignition isHarley - using the tubular highsecurity key and lock. Codes andbittings are not released on this FortLock produced lock.

According to Gray, who is quitefamiliar with the Harley line, the gascap and fork keys may be made byNeiman, with the fork lock possiblyusing the Silca NE5 or NE44 key.

Bill and The National Locksmithmagazine will keep you posted on thisnew bike.

From the rumor mill: The NationalLocksmith technical writer MichaelHyde has word from inside Ford thatthe 1996 Taurus will be incorporatinga new transponder security system. After extensive testing on FordEurope vehicles in the U.K., thesystem is apparently ready to beintroduced to the States.

According to early releases on thissystem, a data chip located in the headof the key will transmit a 128 bitencoded RF signal to a receiver withinthe vehicle. Even with a correctmechanical key, the vehicle will notstart without first receiving the signal. And, as might be expected, keys areonly available from Ford, and attemptsto replicate the correct signal for anygiven vehicle is currently unrealistic.(But, remember, nothing isimpossible.)

Before you turn the page, just areminder to take a look at TomMazzone’s article, page 11, on GM’snew security system to be introducedin late 1995 and 1996.

Q: Would you discuss the rekeying ofthe Dexter key-in-knob lockset.

From my understanding, Dexter is nolonger around? Pat Garity, MI.

A: You’re right Pat, Dexter wassold a while ago to Master Lock

Company. Initially the Dexter namewas retained and eventually replacedby master. Until recent years, the

hardware itself has remained thesame.

As regarding the lockset, rekeyingprocedures depend on which modelyou have. As this is not included inyour letter, let me state theprocedures for the 3000 seriesDEXLOCK followed by procedures forthe 7000 series Duralock.

It should be noted that both ofthese procedures, along withphotographs, are part of “The NationalLocksmith Guide: Door LockEncyclopedia” by Bob Sieveking. Thisguide contains service and keyingprocedures and specifications for themost common residential andcommercial knobsets and deadbolts.

Cold Weather Clip WarmerI think that anyone who works on

automotive locks in very cold weathershould carry a blow-type hair dryer intheir truck.

When the temperature is wellbelow freezing, the plastic clips usedto hold lock linkages in place becomebrittle and can break under very littlepressure when you need to removethem.

I use the hair dryer to warm thisclips up before trying to pry theseclips loose. It works very well.

Directional Lube TubeThe plastic tube that comes with

aerosol spray lubricants is fine forspraying lubricant horizontally intothe keyway of a lock.

I modified my tube to spray in anupward direction by cementing ahypodermic needle into the end of thetube and then bending the needle to aslight angle with a pair of pliers.

By spraying the lubricant upwardsto the top springs and pins, I feel thelock is better lubricated.

COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS:The 2000 is an extremely easy lock toinstall, program and use.

Offering alternate keyways and adeadlatch may make it a little moreversatile.

Offering this same unit in Grade 2and Grade 1 versions is equally asappealing, and may open more doorsfor commercial applications.

While designed primarilyfor the the residentialmarkets, this unit is assaleable to small commercialaccounts as a means forcontrolling single doors.C O N C L U S I O N :Considering the ease ofinstallation and operation, there’s no reason thelocksmith should not takeadvantage of this lock’spotential for residential andcommercial security.
