Log Cabin Democrat readers named Flanagin Dental Service of Conway “Best Dentist” in the 2010 Best of Faulkner County Reader’s Choice Awards.

“We’re flattered we won. This

town is full of great dentists so we must have a great staff,” DDS Jimmy Flanagin said.

Eighty years of dental ex-perience back the Flanagin dental clinic, located at 800

Locust St. in Conway.“We have a group that works

well together and we try to have fun here,” Flanagin said. “We have a lot of people who have stayed with us a long time.”

After multiple runner-up fin-ishes, Steve’s Auto Center has been voted as the Best Wrecker Service in the Log Cabin Democrat’s Best of Readers’ Choice Awards.

Owners Steve and Tracy Gafner have been in business in Conway for nearly nine years. They see this award as an honor from their cus-tomers.

“We just appreciate all the votes,” Tracy Gafner said. “We’re proud they’ve selected us for our quality of work.”

It’s a quality of work Gafner thinks is getting more and more notice.

“We’ve been in business for almost nine years now,” she said. “We’ve done more advertising, and our name is getting out there.”

As customers have learned more

about the business, they’ve realized the wide selection of services that are offered.

“It took people awhile to realize we do more than just automotive repair,” Gafner said. “... We’ve been competing against (businesses) that have been out here for 30 years.”

With more people knowing more about the business, customers have taken notice to the variety of ser-vies offered at Steve’s Auto Center. That’s something the owners take pride in.

“The fact we can help customers customers with their whole auto-motive needs,” Gafner said. “We can handle anything from accidents to car locked to tire repair — no matter the size of the car. We’re ca-pable of meeting all the customer’s needs.”

Whether it be towing, car repair, maintenance or other services, cus-tomers have seemed to be pleased with their service, Gafner said. That’s helping Steve’s Auto Center not have too many ill affects from tthe down economy.

“Even with the economy like it is, we’re staying pretty level,” Gaf-ner said.

Gafner said the business was af-fected some by the Cash for Clunk-ers event that was held across the country in recent years.

“It’s a little more difficult for us to find used parts,” Gafner said.

Smokehouse Bar-B-Que was once again voted best barbecue by readers of the Log Cabin Democrat. The favorite barbecue restau-rant has been in Conway for six years, and this is its third year in a row to win best barbecue.

Britt Smith co-owns the restaurant with his dad, Don Smith. When asked what makes their barbecue business different, Britt said it’s that they have a family tradition of barbe-cue. They have had three generations, his grandpa, dad and now him, in this business, and the tradi-tion is what makes them different. Other barbecue restaurants owned by the Smith family were JoJo’s and The Shack.

Britt said he is defi-nitely happy about being named best barbecue, and he thanked those who vot-ed for voting for Smoke-house Bar-B-Que.

“There are a few other barbecue places in town,

so it lets us know we’re doing something right,” he said.

Some characteristics that Britt listed as rea-sons why customers are satisfied with Smoke-house were the family at-mosphere, friendly envi-ronment and their effort to make the best barbe-cue.

When customers come to Smokehouse they can expect to be welcomed by Britt and Don. The father and son co-own-ers greet everyone, one of the reasons why a lot of customers come in two or three times a week, Britt said.

Scroggins is the owner of Scroggins Law Firm, and spe-cializes in divorces, wills, trusts, healthcare directives, guardian-ship and child support, serving clients in Faulkner, Van Buren, Searcy, Cleburne, White and Pope counties.

Scroggins began her busi-ness in 1996. She had previously practiced law in Little Rock, be-ginning her career in 1988.

“I was a partner when I left there, and I really just made a decision and went out on my own, and I’ve been running the office there ever since,” Scrog-gins said.

Scroggins said that the staff at her office strives to be both sympathetic and professional.

“A lot of people are coming out of bad situations, so when people

come into our office we try to make if feel more like they are coming into someone’s home,” Scroggins said.

In addition to her regular du-ties, Scroggins has advocated for children in court for about 50 years.

“I was doing ad litum work long before the courts set up rules for ad litums, and I’ve done that on and off again for about 50 years. I still do some work with juveniles as far as representation in juvenile court,” Scroggins said.

Scroggins attributed the suc-cess of her endeavors to her co-workers.

“It’s not just me. It’s the other people there that make it work every day,” Scroggins said. “And I’d also like to say thank you to the loyal clients that have voted for us for multiple years.”

Shorty’s has the best burger in Faulkner Coun-ty, according to Log Cabin Democrat readers, and have for a number of years.

Owner Keith Leach said their success in the burger business can be attributed to their commitment to cook each order fresh. Leach said the same secret recipe has been used for more than 17 years.

“We’ve been cooking them a long time that way, and the way we do it is a se-cret,” Leach said.

Shorty’s is a family owned business located on Harkrider Street in Con-

way, and has been at their location for about 25 years, according to Leach.

When asked what his restaurant was doing right, Leach replied, “We cook it all fresh. The fries are hot, the burgers are fresh and our milk shakes

Log Cabin readers voted Sonshine Academy Best Dance Studio and Best Gymnastics and Cheer School again this year in the newspaper’s Best Of Readers’ Choice Awards.

It was also voted runner-up in the Children’s Birthday Venue category.

Scott and Elsie Rose Wright opened Sonshine Academy 19 years ago.

The business began in a building downtown during July of 1991 in a 9,000-square-foot facility.

Their vision a success, the couple now own a 32,000-square-foot state-of-the-art fa-cility that is unlike any other in the area.

Together, the Wrights have formed a business that offers a little bit of everything for both the young and young-at-heart.

“We just had a 67-year-old

woman take a tap class and perform in her first recital,” Elsie said. “And we offer swimming lessons for babies beginning at 9 months of age, so there really is something for everyone.”

Sonshine Academy offers affordable instruction in the areas of gymnastics, dance, cheerleading, tumbling, pre-school gymnastics, swimming and theater.

The facilities also host birth-day parties, parent’s night out, group events, after-school care and camps and summer day camps.

Scott serves as president of Sonshine Academy and over-sees the gymnastics program. He has over 35 years of experi-ence in the sport of gymnastics as a gymnast, girls and boys coach, men’s judge and busi-ness owner.

Elsie Rose manages the of-fice and oversees the dance and cheerleading programs. She has over 30 years of ex-perience as an athlete, coach, teacher and business owner.

Elsie attributes the success of the business to “an incred-ible staff of people who just love kids.”

“This is a tremendous honor from the folks in the area. We appreciate everyone voting so much. It’s just very humbling. It’s such a great honor to serve the people of Conway and the surrounding areas,” Elsie said.
