History of Carton Boxes

The First Commercial Paperboard

• British are credited for creating the first commercial carton box in the year 1817

• However, cardboard packaging was done for the first time by Germans in the same year

The Patent

• Corrugated paper was patented for manufacturing liners and tall hats in the year 1856, in England

• On 20th December, 1871, Albert Jones of USA received the patent for cardboard boxes as shipping material

First Machine to Create Carton Boxes

• G. Smyth is credited with creating the first machine for producing large scale corrugated boards in 1874

• Oliver Jones improved his design and developed machine to produce corrugated boards with liner sheets, the one that’s still in use till date

First Pre-Cut Cardboard Box

• In the year 1890, Robert Gair, born in Scotland came up with the first pre-cut cardboard box accidentally

Corrugated Cardboard Box

• In the year 1895, the first corrugated carton box was manufactured in the United States of America

• By 1908, paper traders started the use of corrugated paper boards and corrugated cardboard

and there hasn’t

been much change in

their structure since!!!
