PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEJANUARY 2017
This month, I am very glad to let you know that TPT will be premiering an important new program that the station has produced for the national PBS schedule. Alzheimer’s: Every Minute Counts sounds an urgent and necessary wake-up call about the national threat posed by Alzheimer’s disease. While many of us are aware of the tragedies sparked by the disease, few people know that Alzheimer’s is one of the most critical public health crises facing America. As the Baby Boomer generation ages, the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is projected to skyrocket. This powerful documentary illuminates the tremendously serious social and economic consequences for the country if a medical breakthrough is not discovered for this currently incurable disease in the near future. I am so proud of the work that TPT has done to shine a national light on Alzheimer’s. In 2004, TPT created the groundbreaking, National Emmy® Award-winning program, The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s. The Forgetting took an all-encompassing look at the disease — what it is, the current state of research, and the struggles of families affected by it. With Alzheimer’s: Every Minute Counts, TPT zeroes in on how the disease has escalated to the state of impending national epidemic. Our goal for this program is that it will serve as a national catalyst for public awareness and as an inspiration to ignite efforts to find a cure. Please know that your support of TPT is integral to making important national programs like this possible. Thank you. Alzheimer’s: Every Minute Counts airs on January 25 at 9 p.m. on TPT and throughout the country that same evening. If you, or someone you know has questions and concerns about Alzheimer’s, please call the Alzheimer’s Association at 1-800-272-3900.
