OUR HISTORY

Formed in 1925, Evans originally manufactured cow standings and water troughs for agriculture. As the business expanded, the company became nationally recognised for the production of high quality exposed aggregate, reconstructed stone and structural precast products.

In 1998, Evans expanded its services to offer designed and bespoke precast concrete products resulting in the highly specialised capabilities we see today.

Shay Murtagh Group purchased Evans in 2016 allowing the company to expand their work-load, reliability, knowledge and capabilities to even further horizons. Hard landscaping and the value proposition this company brings is invaluable. Now with in-house design and logistics, the client is the central focus and their requirements are what every department work together to give best solutions each project.

INTRODUCTION

Hard Landscaping is the term used to describe structures that provide solid frameworks around designed landscapes. These frameworks shape, fence and provide durable functionalities. Hard landscaping is most evident in city centres, dispersing at suburban and rural areas.

CONCRETE IN HARD LANDSCAPINGThe value of concrete in hard landscaping can be seen across the globe. Castings can be produced in a near-infinite variety of shapes and sizes enabling landscape designers to create functional as well as imaginative and aesthetically-pleasing projects.

Once seen as a cheaper alternative to stone or brick, concrete has come into its own as a hard landscaping option. The versatility, functionality and finishes of bespoke concrete elements make it ideal for innovative projects.

EVANS BESPOKE HARD LANDSCAPING Evans work with clients to design bespoke concrete elements such as seating, planters, artistic monuments and retaining walls. Evans have considerable experience in creating complex units and using specialist mould technology to incorporate elements such as water features. Our talented design and engineering team use the latest AutoCAD and BIM technology from concepts through to production of full working drawings, including the design of associated fixings.

Design

Carried out at our 11.5 acre plant in Derbyshire. Manufacturing is coordinated, with defined programmes in place for associated trades. Quality control, catering for specific requirements ensure strict standards are met.

Manufacture

With experience installing a diverse project range, we can approach any scheme with the confidence of achieving beyond expectation. Full contract management by allocating dedicated resources to the project warrant continuity throughout installation.

Our structural design team liaise with the client and their consultants in an efficient, punctual and precise fashion to determine definite design requirements. Our structural design team utilise and continuously develop sophisticated design aids in order to achieve such adaptability without compromising design speed. The team maintains a combination of flexibility, efficiency and reliability that is rarely found within the design divisions of structural manufacturers.

Using the latest technology throughout the design process starts with initial concepts and progresses through to the production of full working drawings, including the design of associated fixtures and final design detail.

Evans ability to issue and receive drawings in ifc, rvt, dwg, dwf and pdf formats as well as being conversant means that the process is organised and controlled efficiently. Highly capable engineering support on every project ensures complete design satisfaction, and all is managed in-house.

BIM - BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING

BIM virtually constructs a project and simulates its impact on the surrounding environment, thus removing uncertainty and offering improved project insight. BIM’s collaborative process of working enables early supply chain involvement, which unlocks more systematic methods of designing, innovating and maintaining.

Sub-contractors from every trade can input critical information into the model before beginning construction, offering opportunities to pre-fabricate or assemble off-site.

Calculations can be made regarding materials allowing precise budgeting. Waste can be minimised on-site and products delivered on a just-in-time basis which maximises smooth operation.

With Evans, our design and production engineers work in both Tekla and Revit to deliver to our customers exact specifications.

MIX

The Evans sample range provides a summary of the main architectural mixes used in production. All samples show an acid etched finish to three different levels - light, medium and heavy etch. These mixes incorporate aggregates such as limestone, granite, basalt and Spanish dolomite and are compounds we have historical performance data for mix designs, product data sheets and concrete cube strength tests.

This range is used for approximately 80% of the projects we undertake. However, where a non-standard colour and finish is required, we will source an appropriate aggregate and produce special mixes and finishes that compliment the project.

FINISHES

Evans also offer a range of finishes if required by the architect. Polished, grit blasted and exposed aggregate finishes are common examples.

Using cast in tiles and resin letters, form liners and stencils offer further options to create lettering, artwork and texture to the units.

Peter is a Senior Estimator at Evans. Peter is the initial contact forenquiries from architects, clients or main contractors. AARON WHITMORE

PRODUCTION MANAGER

Aaron started working at Evans in March 2010. He originally started out as a Joiner and progressed to his current position as Production Manager. Aaron oversees every operation on site and manages the day to day running, from production to employees, and general site requirements.

STEVE TOWNDROW

QUALITY & TECHNICAL MANAGER

Steve worked in precast concrete since leaving college in 1993, and for eleven years was CAD draughtsman. After joining Evans in 2004 he gained valuable experience in contracts management, planning, production and quality control. He works closely with all departments/ clients/ professional bodies to ensure our products meet the required specification and architectural requirements by developing project specific inspection & test plans and maintaining control of all production operations.

FERGAL O’NEILL

PRODUCTION MANAGER

Fergal is the Production Manager with Shay Murtagh Group and has worked in the industry for over thirteen years. He graduated from Waterford Institute of Technology with a degree in Construction Management and a post-graduate diploma in Project Management from Trinity College Dublin. He has worked on numerous major civil engineering and construction projects in Ireland, Australia and the United Arab Emirates. He works closely with the Production Team on our large scale projects.

NATALIE WHITMORE

PRODUCTION PLANNER

Natalie is Production Planner at Evans. Once awarded a new contract, Natalie starts the production planning process. Working closely with the design department in order to start the moulds and timetable schedule Natalie assembles a casting programme to meet the requirements of the Client. Natalie works closely with the production team, making sure we meet the targets set and the work load is managed.

ROBERT FITZSIMONS GROUP DESIGN MANAGER

Robert Fitzsimons is Design Manager for the Shay Murtagh Group and has been with the company for over ten years. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Heriot Watt University in Civil and Environmental Engineering. With over 15 years industry experience in various sectors

of construction in the UK and Ireland, Robert works with his team to deliver solutions to clients and has worked major

projects with responsibility for the design, coordination and production of precast concrete units.

JOSÉ TERRA STRUCTURAL DESIGN MANAGER

José is a Senior Civil Engineer at Shay Murtagh Group with 18 yearsexperience in the industry. He is highly involved in the innovation of new products as well as design and production. José graduated as a Civil Engineer from Porto University. He has since focused on the industrial construction sector where he has gained experience with Grupo Castelo, one of the most important companies in the Iberian Peninsula that specialise in industrial and commercial buildings, petrochemical industries, concrete floating pontoons and breakwaters

TÂNIA ROCHA

DESIGN ENGINEER

Tânia Rocha is a Civil Engineer at Shay Murtagh Group. With a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from Minho University, Tânia started work in design, developing her competencies in bridges. For three years she was involved in the development of form travellers, a mechanism used to pour deck bridges. The last project that Tania was involved in was in Columbia where she developed 10 metres long segments. Tânia has experience in steel structures, production management and three-dimensional software.

FÀTIMA SALGADO

CIVIL ENGINEER

Fátima is an Engineer at Shay Murtagh Group and joined the team in 2017. Fátima has a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering from Technology and Management School of the Viana do Castelo Polytechnic Institute in Portugal. In her role as Civil Engineer, she is responsible for the planning, designing and supervising projects, ensuring it’s completed comprehensively, efficiently and on schedule. Fatima also liaises with clients, provides solutions for any arising issues and produces reports.

We pride ourselves on carrying out all testing in-house. cube strength testers, cylinder strength testers for tunnels and the only in-house lab in Ireland to possess a flexibility tester for bridge beams ensures rigorous procedures are carried out routinely and without delay.

Checks are documented on all pre-pour and post-pour work. Robust inspection and test plans are implemented to ensure compliance with project specifications and all aggregates are tested in accordance with CE Markings.

Transportation is well planned and managed by the highly trained Shay Murtagh crew who have been involved in abnormal loads for many years. HEALTH & SAFETY

Health & Safety is imperative to Shay Murtagh Group. Continuous training of staff to keep awareness of their surroundings, their colleagues, the public and their actions is part of management philosophy. Specific training such as Confined Space Training for installation crews to general training such as Manual Handling Training for every member of staff is organised and attended as required.

There is a qualified Health & Safety Officer on site who carries out continuous assessment of the related needs of the company and staff. The Safety Committee meets quarterly or as required to discuss upcoming projects, changes to existing procedures and any other safety related issues. This Committee comprises of representatives of Management and Staff throughout all departments.

Shay Murtagh Group are certified and audited annually for the OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety Management accreditation.
