9th March. 2012 Issue 22/2012 www.besaturkey.org Dear Parents, This has been a super week and the children and staff have all thoroughly enjoyed BOOK WEEK! A huge thank you to Ms Ann Kardas for organising a won- derful range of activities and competi- tions which have kept us all very busy! Congratulations to all the winners of the competitions and thanks to par- ents for their support in making this a great event. It was great to talk to the parents who came to Breakfast with the Head this week. We had some very good dis- cussions about snow days, book week, competitions, handwriting and the use of the Internet and computers. I thank you for your contributions and good ideas. Keep them coming!!! The term dates have now been approved by the Board of Governors and are attached to this email. It was also decided at the Board meeting last Wednesday that BESA would not make up Snow days this year. This decision was taken based upon feed- back from parents and also the fact that the children accessed schoolwork from the VLE on days when we were forced to close. Mr Kunz father of Nadine in Year 6 shared a useful link to a site which pro- vides internet security for parents and their children: https://onlinefamily.norton.com/ familysafety/loginStart.fs?ULang=eng I hope to see you all at the Wine- Tasting event this evening! In Year 2 we have been making puppets this term. We made one in school and then made another one at home with our parents. We had to plan what our puppet was going to look like and then come up with a story to go with them. We decided where the puppet was going to come from and what their name was going to be. Then on Wednesday we took our pup-pets to the library for our partner reading time with year 6, and told our Year 6 reading partners the stories behind our puppets. Come into the Year 2 classroom to see our amazing puppets on display! Sam Walker

BACK FROM THE ARCTIC

I am slowly coming back down to earth – despite the

epic snowstorm outside at the moment! I had an amazing ad-

venture and was able to collect a great deal of information and

data for the children to use throughout the school. The trip was

both physically and mentally demanding and was full of scary

moment’s especially runaway dog teams and sleds! I have at-

tached some of my favourite photographs which I hope will

give some insight into what an amazing place the Arctic is.

Leeanne Halloren

I would like to ex-tend a big Thank you to Tony Furlong, Karen An-toine, Penny Ahearn Er, Eloise Hammond and Nuray Prebble who all gave up their valuable time to help me train effectively and return with no inju-ries.

I would also like to thank everybody who has put so much effort into raising sponsorship money for this event. I will be collecting all the money in this week and hope to have a final sum raised by Monday March 12th. I have been com-pletely overwhelmed by the generosity and en-thusiasm of everybody to raise funds for two very important charities, all of the cash raised will go directly to the respective causes.

I will announce the winners of the competi-

tion at one of the assemblies week commencing

12th March.

THE GOLBASI DOGS

As you are aware, the BESA has been supporting

the “Gőlbaşi Dogs” Home for many years and we have

provided items such as food and blankets for the dogs,

along with various fund-raising activities to help pur-

chase what they need.

Over 3000 dogs live at the Home, which is financed to a very limited degree by the local government, who also collect any

dogs in need found on the streets. More dogs arrive daily, and this winter has been especially difficult because of the terrible cold.

There are many many puppies at the home who have lost their mothers and who would die if they were left outside, along with

other dogs of all shapes and sizes that have been found. The Home sterilises the dogs and then looks after them. Very few ever find

a loving family to live with so most spend the rest of their lives at the Home. Some are lucky (!) enough to have kennels but many

live in overcrowded cages.

“ PLEASE HELP ME ! ”

“ AND ME ”

This week, Mrs. Sarah Sener and Nurse Karen Antoine visited the home on behalf of our school to see how the dogs were getting on and to ascertain what they needed. Meeting the dogs was a moving ex-perience and we were amazed to find that although they live in difficult conditions, they were loving and affectionate. As you can see from the photographs, their primary need is love and a home but if we cannot provide that on daily basis, then we can at least try to do our best to make their lives there as comfortable and good as we possibly can.

The BESA proposes to raise enough funds to build a ‘BESA Street’ for the dogs, with kennels, runways and a roof in each

enclosure. This will cost at least 2000 TL. To this end, we will be having a non-uniform and Burger day on Friday 16 March

(more details of this will follow). We would also welcome any donations, which could be given to Mrs. Melek Burton in an enve-

lope marked ‘Dogs’ Home’. Additionally, if you feel able to adopt a dog there are many at the Home who would love to become a

member of your family.

Thank you very much for your sensitivity in this matter,

Mrs. Sarah Şener and Nurse Karen Antoine
