PRINCIPAL’S REPORT BEHAVIOURAL

OPTOMETRY Recently we had the privilege of

having Norman Russo, Russo &

Associates Optometry provide a

presentation to staff as part of our

professional development program

for this year. Norman‟s presentation

was one of the most enlightening

educational presentations I have

witnessed in many a long time. In

little more than an hour Norman

explained the visual challenges that a

significant number of children face –

challenges that often impact

negatively on their learning.

At the core of his presentation the

following passage explains a lot:

“Many children have a visual

problem which significantly limits

present performance and could

limit future potentials, and yet

they have no eye problem. They

have healthy eyes internally and

externally, no optical defects and

have clear sight at six metres

(100% or 6/6 visual acuity), yet

they are unable to effectively

control and use their system to

obtain “meaning” from the

environment.”

Reading is an important skill that

underpins a great deal of learning. As

Norman pointed out, he has never

met a child who is a poor reader

who is so by deliberate choice. For

these children, reading is a painful

chore, yet too often we make the

child read more to overcome this

difficulty, with little improvement. In

other words, more of the same

doesn‟t work, unless children are not

reading enough in the first place.

Instead of banging our heads against

the wall, the field of behavioural

optometry offers alternative

strategies that often work. Reading is

inextricably linked to visual skills and

explanations for poor reading are

more complex than children simply

having a technical visual problem or

having a fundamental lack of reading

ability.

Credible research evidence indicates

that there are a range of strategies

that can be utilised to improve what

is called a child‟s “visual

performance”, thereby enabling the

child to learn better at school.

We are hoping to have Norman

present his message to parents at

school forums in the future. In the

meantime, he does have a website

that you can visit for more detailed

information. It is:

www.russooptometry.com.au or

phone him at 9792 3077

FREQUENTLY ASKED

QUESTIONS (FAQ’s) Q. Will we be using the new

BER building this year?

A.No. We will be using the time

available in term 4 after the building

is completed to ensure that we have

the building properly furnished and

set out in the way that we wish to

use it next year. It would be too

disruptive to relocate grades and our

library for one term.

having a sale this

week. Until

Princes Highway, Hallam. They can

be contacted on 9702 3181.

FROM 5th SEPTEMBER,

2011 THINGS TO

REMEMBER: UV levels are on the rise again so

September is the time to grab

your sun protection gear. When

UV levels reach 3 and above, sun

protection is needed because the

sun can start to damage skin and

eyes and lead to skin cancer.

Use a combination of the following

five sun protection measures.

1. SLIP on clothing that covers as

much skin as possible (no singlet

tops)

2. SLOP on SPF30+ broad

spectrum sun screen and reapply

when going outdoors

3. SLAP on a broad brimmed hat

that shades the head, neck, face

and ears

4. SEEK shade

5. SLIDE on some wrap-around

sunglasses

Be especially careful during the

middle part of the day (between

10:00AM – 2:00PM or

11:00AM – 3:00PM daylight saving

time) when the UV rays are most

intense.

CONGRATULATIONS -

who created a beautiful

watercolour depicting „feeling

good, feeling healthy, feeling

SCHOOL COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome everyone to my School Council President‟s Report.

SCHOOL COUNCILLOR PROFILES

This week I would like to introduce Lesley Lees, one of our new parent representatives and Sue Naismith, one of DEECD

representatives and Grade 6 teacher.

Lesley Lees: Hi Everyone! My name is Lesley Lees, and I have been part of School Council since the beginning of this year.

I have been asked to tell you all a little bit about myself, so here goes: I grew up in the Springvale area, and moved to

Hampton Park when I married my husband Michael, in 1991. Since then we have had three wonderful children, Ben (17), Josh

(14) and Chloe (8). Although I am a qualified accountant, I have put my career aside for the moment, so that I have the time

required to raise my children. I work part-time at Case Victoria in Dandenong, doing accounts and administration. I don‟t

get a lot of spare time for hobbies, but I do love spending time with my friends, music, dancing and even

karaoke on the rare occasion (did I just admit that in the newsletter??). I have been involved with Berwick

Lodge since my eldest son started here in Grade 2 in 2001. I could not have asked for a better primary

school experience for my children, and will be very sad when my youngest child finishes at the school in

2014. Please do not hesitate to contact myself, or any of the other school council members, if you have any

questions or comments you would like to discuss.

Sue Naismith: I‟ve been at Berwick Lodge P.S for just over 20 years now and I can honestly say I have enjoyed every one of

those years! Although I am currently teaching in the senior grades I have taught in all areas of the school and even spent time

as the Library teacher when the school first opened. My passion is to contribute to the education and development of all of

our children in a positive and encouraging way. Outside of school I have a wonderful family and we love to enjoy the

outdoors life. We have travelled to many places all over Australia in our caravan and love to stop and enjoy the scenery of

our great country. I also love to garden and spend time fishing when the weather is kind to us!

PRINCIPAL’S DAY

This Friday 2nd September 2011, is the annual VPA Principal‟s Day. On behalf of our School Council and our school

community I would like to thank our Principal Class Team (Henry Grossek, Lynne Brenner and Debbie Cusack) for all their

hard work, dedication, time and effort they put in to making Berwick Lodge Primary School the great school we all recognize

it is. If you see one of the team on Friday, please stop and wish them a “Happy Principal‟s Day” to let them know the work

they do is appreciated.

FATHER’S DAY STALL

Today I assisted at our annual Father‟s Day Stall and I would like to congratulate the PFA on a very well

organized morning. It was a great to see our students choosing gifts for their Dad, Grandad or

Great-Grandad. Thank you to the PFA for running this stall and providing this service to our school. I

would also like to wish all our Dads, Grandads and Greatdads a very Happy Father‟s Day. I hope you have

a great Sunday!

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly via the school office or you can email me on [email protected]

SCHOOL AWARDS

Congratulations to the following students who received awards over the

last week:

BOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY

To celebrate Book Week (20th-26th August 2011) and Literacy Week (29th August-

4th September 2011) we are having a dress-up day.

On Friday 2nd September 2011 all the students at Berwick Lodge Primary School

are invited to come to school dressed as their favourite book character.

Students are asked to bring a gold coin to help raise money for our 2 Asian schools in

Cambodia and Laos. At the moment these children only have one A5 notebook to

record all their learning for the whole year. It would be nice to think we could provide

them with some much-needed books.

Weather permitting; a whole school buddy lunch will take place on the basketball courts to showcase

everyone‟s effort.

There will be a „Smiggle‟ prize awarded to the best-dressed student in each grade!

THE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE –

LIVE IT AT HOME

HOST FAMILY OPPORTUNITIES IN 2012

In January 2012 we will be receiving exchange students

from Japan, Europe, the USA and Latin America. Our

new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a

local school for 2-10 months. As we plan for their

arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families

located in VIC who might be interested to host a

student.

Hosting an exchange student can be a truly rewarding

experience. It allows a family to

experience a foreign culture first hand,

be exposed to a new language and

pass on a bit of our own culture. They

might even make a friend for life!
