    Berthoud Eagle April 2012

Principal to ParentDear Families,Throughout this year staff members have been making use of the Early Release Wednesdaytime to evaluate the new Common Core Standards that the state of Colorado adopted last year.We have met several times with our sister school Ivy Stockwell Elementary and all schools inthe district to begin the very complicated process of developing integrated units of study, usingRigorous Curriculum Design and Understanding by Design protocols, for these new standards.

It has been exciting to see the high level of collaboration with teachers from across the district.Conversations about what our essential learning will be for each subject area and how to mesh

that learning when integrating reading, writing, social studies, math and science have been richand thoughtful. The time to do this work on Wednesday afternoons is priceless!

We recently received our student projections for next year. We are projected at 365 studentsand will be funded at 98% of that number. Our projected student count is critical to how we arefunded each year. This year, with again diminished funding from our state, we will have largerclass sizes. We may be facing personnel cuts as well. Our staff will continue to use our limitedresources creatively to be as effective as possible.

    Mrs. LoJeske

    Class Placements for Next Year

Manyfactors are included in the complex process of designing class lists. We use academicand social needs, parental input, gender balance, learning styles and dynamics created whencertain children are grouped together. A Parent Input form, which is used to provide us withinformation about your childs specific needs, is now available in the front office if you wish tohave additional information considered in the process. Please return it to the office by April 20thand please do not request a specific teacher.

Kitchen NewsHi everyone, Aprils Harvest of the month is Dried Beans! The beans will be prepared in refriedbeans, tacos and burritos.

Nutritional guidelines request that students not share food. If you bring in lunch for your child, please avoid sharing with other students. Thank you for supporting this school policy.

Parent Volunteer InformationThompson School District appreciates its volunteers! Volunteers are a necessaryand greatly appreciated resource in our schools. Balancing this treasuredresource with the safety of our students is of utmost concern. With more than4,000 volunteers in the district, managing the number of parent and communityvolunteers is also a challenge.

Our new online volunteer registration and management program will help us keep track of our growingnumber of volunteers and allow us to keep them informed about upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Beginning February 27, current volunteers will log on to the district website www.ThompsonSchools.org and click on the purple volunteer button on the right side of the homepage then register online. The registration process takes less than five minutes. The district will conductcriminal background checks on all registered volunteers. Principals will be notified if a volunteer is notapproved.

New parent volunteers should complete a school volunteer registration form first and then go online toregister. Community and other non-parent volunteers need to complete the community volunteerapplication located on our VITAL volunteer page on the district website. When they are matched with avolunteer position, they will be instructed to register online.

It is important that all school volunteers register online. Board policy states that ...a volunteer is anindividual, except a student enrolled in a district school, who provides an act or service withoutcompensation. This requirement applies to all volunteer service, whether it is only for a single occasion orwill occur on a sporadic or regular basis, and regardless of the program, event or activity involved.

Have you registered online? If you have any questions, please contact Chris Ingold at 613-5072.

BHSSE: Continuing to Make a Difference in the Community

By: Lauren Sawinska, BHS Class of 2011

After giving away five scholarships to last years graduating seniors, the Berthoud High

School Scholarship and Endowment committee is determined to reach out to even more students

this school year. To accomplish this, a group of Berthoud High School students as well as local

advisors are asking for contributions of any amount from local residents and businesses. The

money they collect will not only benefit the graduating Class of 2011 but also future BHS

graduating seniors. A student committee chooses deserving senior recipients before graduation.

The amount remaining at the end of this school year will be added to an endowment fund in

hopes of continuing to provide local students with scholarships to help offset ever-increasing

college costs. Tax deductible donations for this program can be sent to Berthoud High School,

c/o BHSSE, 850 Spartan Ave., Berthoud, CO 80513. For more information, please contact

Jennie Koolstra at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting BHS students.
