From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Members of the Community,
Parent Helpers’ and Community Morning Tea—Tuesday 13th December I would once more like to thank and acknowledge the many parents and community members that make Bert Oldfield Public School a lovely community school. This year we will be thanking our helpers a little differently and inviting the Bert Oldfield Public School community to a morning tea after our Presentation Day service. We will acknowledge all our classroom helpers, Scripture teachers, as well as our hardworking P&C members. We love the additional help and support offered by our parents and community members. It is a vital part of our school and our educational programs and strongly encourage you to become involved in the school in 2017.
OOSH Our OOSH providers in 2017 will again be “Helping Hands Network.” As they
commence their 4th year of service. They are a highly accomplished and
accredited service provider of before and after school care and are very
excited to be continuing their tenure at Bert Oldfield Public School in 2017.
This service will be available to provide vacation care over the coming
January holidays for any families who might like to use that service. The
service program will re-commence from the 27th January, the first day back
at school. Please make contact with The Helping Hands Network on 0448 003 267.
SEMESTER TWO REPORTS Our teachers have been preparing the Semester Two Reports which will be
coming home at the end of Term 4. These reports represent a formative
appraisal of your child’s learning and application to their studies across
Semester Two, 2016. The student reports for this semester provide
information to parents which encompasses all six Key Learning Areas, as
well as social and behavioural information.
As with semester one, students will be provided with an overall assessment
of achievement in the Key Learning Areas using a five-point scale, Basic,
Limited, Sound, High and Outstanding, with the majority of students expected
to be within the sound level of achievement for their stage of learning.
Students are also provided an assessment ranking for their application in the
Key Learning Areas and are indicated as Limited, Consistent and
Outstanding.
As always, you are encouraged to focus on the level of effort your child has made towards their progress and regard it as equally important as their level of achievement.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS 2017 Enrol now for 2017. We have had a great response from the community and are growing as a school. As part of our wonderful learning community you already know what a great place Bert Oldfield Public School is. The brilliant staff at Bert Oldfield Public School caters for the individual learning needs of all children. If your child, or the child of someone you know, is turning 5 before 31st July 2017, they can enrol at Bert Oldfield Public School for 2017. Please collect an enrolment package from the front office and return it as soon as possible, as places are filling fast. Proof of age and residency status will be required. 2017 SCHOOL LEADERS - SPEECHES & VOTING On Monday 21st November, 7 of our Year 5 students presented their School Leader speeches to their peers from Years 1 to 6. I would like to congratulate each candidate for the effort and delivery of their speeches. It takes a lot of courage and confidence to stand in front of your peers and deliver a speech informing them of your leadership qualities and convincing them to vote for you. The quality of the speeches was outstanding and this definitely made it difficult for the audience to decide who to vote for. Votes will be tallied over the coming days and the 2017 School Leaders will be announced at Presentation Day (Thursday 8th December). Good luck to our candidates - Dylan, Dax, Indripta, Kashish, Kalala, Corben and Keval. Congratulations and thank you to our current School Leaders, Riya, Lachlan, Lea and Pritom, for the wonderful job they did in hosting the event.
Ms Perente.
BACKYARD LEAGUE PROGRAM Years 1 to 6 have been involved in the NRL Backyard League Program for the last three Wednesdays. Our participation allowed for three free sessions which were conducted through our local district NRL Club, the Parramatta Eels and by our NRL Game Development Officer, Dave. The purpose of these sessions was to teach students the rules of modified league in a fun and safe environment. Each class had their own 40 minute session and lessons were differentiated according to grades. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave for the endless support he has provided to our school and for encouraging the children to keep active and the importance of fitness and
participation through playing modified rugby league. Ms Perente
STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter and exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.

Thank you to the parents and students who delivered spare bikes and scooters which enabled all students to participate. A great day was had by all but the day would not had been such a success were it not for our dedicated parent helpers and community members who gave up their time to assist. I would like to thank Mrs Iola Hewett, Mrs Orlagh Howell, Ms Britt Humphris Ms Janel Gatley, Miss Louise Lynch, Mrs Jillian McLean, Mrs Terina Pepper, Mr Paul Reynolds, Mrs Lisa Sellwood and Ms Shelley Wilson. Not only did these wonderful helpers assist with group lessons and the running of skills stations, they also remained and assisted with the cooking of the BBQ. Mrs Stennett and I cannot thank you enough for your efforts on the day – it was a fantastic combined community effort! I encourage all parents to continue to promote Road Safety at home and discuss with their child what messages were learnt through the Stage 2 Road Safety Day, as well as those delivered during class lessons.

NPM EVENTS & SHAREBOOTH On behalf of the Year 6 students and teachers, I would like to thank Natalie from NPM Events/Sharebooth Photography, a local business, for providing BOPS with a photo booth for the Year 6 Farewell. Natalie has kindly offered us the photo booth for half price. I would also like to thank the P&C for offering to pay for the photo booth. I know our students will have an amazing time posing and taking photos which will undoubtedly leave them with life long memories of the evening, their friends and their time at BOPS. Please have a look at NPM Events/Sharebooth websites, as well as their Instagram and Facebook pages, for all your party hire needs. http://www.sharebooth.sydney/npm-events/ Facebook & Instagram links https://www.facebook.com/npmevents.au/ https://www.instagram.com/npm_events/ https://www.facebook.com/Sharebooth.au/ https://www.instagram.com/sharebooth.au/ Ms Perente
STAGE 2 ROAD SAFETY DAY Our first ever Stage 2 Road Safety Day was held last Thursday at school with students having the opportunity to bring their bikes or scooters to school and learn about the importance of Road Safety. The day began with Road Safety lessons which students participated in small groups and with the direction of a parent helper. This was then followed by a visit from Senior Constables Mills, Citon and Stone from Blacktown Police, who delivered the important messages of wearing a helmet, ensuring bikes/scooters were road worthy and passenger safety – wearing a seatbelt and not causing distractions to drivers. Students were then treated to the opportunity to wear police vests as well as explore a brand new police vehicle, which at one point had its sirens and lights activated! After recess, the groups rotated around 6 Practical Skills Stations which were manned by teachers and parent helpers. These stations were; Slalom Course, Bag in a Bucket, U-Turn, Slow Race, Scooting and Distance Racing. Each station focused on certain skills such as control, braking, changing direction, balancing, scanning and avoiding obstacles and hazards.

GARDENING CLUB NEWS Our wonderful gardening guru, Mrs Lessells, works with our students each week in the school garden teaching them all about the plants/vegetables they are growing. Mrs Lessells has asked if anyone in our school community has succulents (non spikey) that you might donate for the students to make a green wall. Also if you have any second hand earthenware pots that you can donate to the school. Please bring any donations to the Administration Office and they will be given to Mrs Lessells. Thank you for supporting the Gardening Club. They have been doing some great work.

It would be a treat for any students to see their grandparents who have also volunteered to help in the canteen. Please see Shelley on Tuesday mornings or Janel, the P&C President, on Fridays in the canteen. P&C Committee

MONEY SENT TO SCHOOL
When sending money to school we ask that you send it in an envelope with your child’s name, class and what the money is for. We are experiencing too many students bringing money into the office or handing it to their class teachers without envelopes which is leading to misplaced money. We request that you purchase a pack of envelopes, especially for school. Thank you.

Hi Everyone,
This term at Helping Hands the children have been enjoying our drawing competitions and boat making challenges.
We have been excited to see the different drawings everyone enters into our competition and the children are pleased to share
their artwork with their families and friends.
Our boat challenge has the children thinking about how to make a boat that will stay afloat using any of the recyclable materials
available in the craft area.
We have seen lots of different boats using paper, cardboard and sticky tape.
The children have also expressed interest in gardening this term so we have been planting seeds and watching them grow as well
as trying to grow plants from cuttings.
Our December/January Vacation Care program is now available for you to book your children in for. If you would like to make a booking or for enquiries please contact the Coordinator. Costs are from $3.62 per day.
The 23rd of December will be our last day for this year. We will re-open on the 9th of January 2017.
Need a Break or some extra time to get things done at home coming up to Christmas? We offer casual before and after school
care for as little as $3.96 per morning and $5.68 in the afternoon.
Please come and see us for an exact quote based on your family’s eligibility for Child care Benefit and Child care Rebate. There
are no upfront costs for enrolments in any of our programs.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your term.
Thankyou
Natasha Burge
