NEWS FROM THE SHOP

Well, we have a newly plastered and decorated shop now! Dave is adding the final touches to

the painting but it’s all coming along nicely. Over the bank holiday the fireproof tiles will be

installed on the ceiling in the back room, hopefully there will not be too much interruption.

We also had the outside of the shop painted last week which looks wonderful, thank you all

for your patience whilst this was going on. Kirsty, Laura, Jayne and Rita held the fort whilst

I had a bit of a break, can I just say a big thank you to them, and I have heard from so many

customers what an amazing job they did.

We are continuing all the time to get new stock into the shop, if there is anything we do not

stock that you think would be useful to you please let us know, we can get products in to

order too.

I have been asked on many occasions if we do an ‘Interflora’ service, we can arrange for

flowers to be sent worldwide, its similar to Interflora but it is a network of florists that work

independently so we cut out the middleman. At the end of this August I will start to get in

more plants now the weather is starting to cool a little.

I know a number of our customers are still feeling safer staying at home so please don’t

forget we are still accepting grocery deliveries, orders can be made by either telephoning or

by email to [email protected]

Finally just a note about August Bank Holiday, the shop will be on normal hours, but the Post

Office will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday.

Berriew Community Group

Following on from the spring when we had unofficial support for the community through the early part of the pandemic in a number of different ways that seemed to come together and work, it seems sensible to continue support throughout the forthcoming autumn and winter months. I will liaise with the community council about whether they would take over the coordination of village support through the remainder of the pandemic which would put it on a more formal footing and allow access to additional resources if necessary. In the meantime we have an original list of volunteers that I will ensure is checked and updated. If anyone new is happy to volunteer please email the following to [email protected]

1. Contact details; 2. Geographical areas you are able to cover; 3. Limitations as to days, times or types of help you can offer; 4. Whether you have access to a 4x4 in case of severe weather.

In the meantime if anyone needs any help with anything please ask through the Berriew Community Facebook Page or ask a neighbour or relative to post for you https://www.facebook.com/groups/BerriewCommunityGroup Darrell Shephard

Helen Hamer 1963 – 2020 Many of you will know already that Helen died on Sunday 16th August after a brave battle with cancer. This is an unimaginably sad time for her parents Eric and Elizabeth, and for Bryan, Dominic, Jamie, Bridget and her siblings, Mary, Frances and Michael, and to all who know the family. Helen was a wonderful lady, radiant, witty, intelligent, kind and loving. She was a friend and neighbour to us, and to very many people in the community. You may wish to know the arrangements for Helen’s funeral so that you can pay your respects to her and the family. Her burial will take place at 14:00 on Saturday 29th August at the Green Lane Burial Field at Abermule. Only close family will be able to attend. The cortege will pass through Berriew on its way to the field at about 13:40, so those who wish to say their last goodbyes might need to arrive in Berriew a little before that, say 13:30. The family is happy to receive flowers at their home or alternatively, donations may be made to either Macmillan Nurses or The Lingen Davies Charitable Trust, both of whom Helen thought very highly of. I have been deeply touched by Helen’s death and have been asked by the family to make this announcement so that all her friends and neighbours know. Please pass the word on. Helen, thinking about you will always make me smile. The fun, happiness and joy you gave, and your three wonderful children, are the most valuable legacy anyone could leave. Phil Bettley

PENTRE LLIFIOR METHODIST CHAPEL, BERRIEW. SY21 8QJ

ALL DETAILS SUBJECT TO CHANGE as the Covid-19 situation demands.

Like our Facebook - Pentre Llifior Methodist Chapel - page to be kept up-to-date.

Welcome to September, The Good News is…………

We are now open for worship - yay!

With further guidance and lifting of restrictions being issued by the Government and Methodist Church, we are pleased to announced that we will be open each Sunday at 2.30pm for worship. We have completed all the necessary risk assessments etc and protocols are now in place to allow us to meet. This means that social distancing (2m), hand sanitising and providing track & trance details are a MUST for ALL attendees. Face coverings and disposable gloves are also available for those wishing to use them and of course, family "bubbles" may sit together. For the time being, worship will take the form of All Age Cell Group (informal style), meeting in the Chapel - the Preacher's Stable remains closed, apart from the toilet facilities. We are NOT allowed to sing collectively, however, this does not stop music being played so we will have to be content with listening to hymns and wait to test if our vocal chords can still reach those high notes!

For those still a little uncertain about venturing out, we continue to issue our weekly worship at home sheets via our Circuit website - you are always welcome to use these for free. All services are prepared by ministers and lay preachers and can be found at:-

www.wbhmethodists.org.uk Access is also available via our Facebook page along with the technical notes to be able to enjoy the service to its full potential. Here's a reminder of what to do. To join in the hymns or follow the readings in a new tab, Press Shift and Ctrl together (bottom left of keyboard) and (left) click on the link. You can then click back on the worship sheet once it starts to follow the hymn or reading. NOTE: Don't forget, though, to close the new tab after the audio has finished. Apologies for the ads at the start of the hymns, our tech guys just can't seem to remove these.

September always marks a time of change within Methodism. It's the time that many Ministers move circuit and this year we welcome our new Superintendent, Rev. Jacquie Evans. We hope that she and her husband John will be happy sharing time with us over the next 5 years. Change sometimes unsettles us, we are comfortable with what we know and the routine of things. Becoming a Christian can sometimes mean BIG changes - you only need to look at the story of Saul's conversion to Paul in Acts ch.9. It's almost unbelievable that someone could change that much - from one extreme to the other! Can they? Especially in today's world? Well, several years ago I met a guy called Kim Goh. He had been a member of the Triads, in fact a very high ranking "member" in the hierarchy within the UK. He evaded police capture for quite some time but was eventually caught and convicted. Whilst serving his sentence he was converted. So from one extreme to the other - just like Saul. Kim's book "Conquering the Dragon" (Authentic Media, 2008: ISBN 978-1-86024-616-6) tells of some of his exploits prior to God calling him, his visit to the "Godfather" in Wales, as well as details of how his conversion happened (Ch. 11). It's a short book, 150 pages only, but very readable and an interesting insight into a man who was once feared for his violence by many but who has become a testament to God's love for all. If you're not into reading, do a Google search on the Reverend Kim Goh and you'll find various links telling his story. No-one is immune or beyond God's love and care, as Rev. Kim's testimony clearly shows!

Following the article from Peter Watkin – ‘Penysarn Cottage’ in the August

issue of the Newsletter we have received the following comments:-

From Eryl Tucker:-

I was so interested in the postcard from Peter Watkin in the August Newsletter. I wonder how he came by it?

Did it never get to Nurse Ellis?

In 1917 Brynteg was the home of my grandparents, Lucy and Sydney Smith, and their sons Douglas, aged

five (who became my father), and Gordon, aged one. I well remember Granny telling me how she saved

Gordon's life by sticking her fingers down his throat to dislodge the diphtheritic membrane when he had

turned blue.

The writer of the postcard, Sue, would be Sue Ellis who was a teacher at the school and lodged with my

grandparents. (She came from Llanfyllin). Presumably the addressee, Aggie, Nurse Ellis, would be her sister.

Sue later became a missionary in Papua New Guinea and married a Mr Rankin. I believe she visited Berriew

School later to talk to the children about her experiences. Sue kept in touch with Granny all her life.

Eryl Tucker

From Glenys McKee:-

I am Glenys McKee, daughter of Douglas Smith. I have just read the article with photograph of Penysarn

Cottage, and Peter Watkin asks about the people mentioned: I can give some information. Douglas Smith

was born on July 14th, so the postcard was written the day after his 5th birthday. He was born in Brynteg, as

was his brother Gordon who was four years younger, though I can't remember exactly when his birthday

was. His mother was Lucy Amy Jones, married to Sydney Smith; they lived in Brynteg after their marriage

in 1911. Lucy had two sisters, Eileen and Eva. Eileen was two years older than Agnes, Eva was younger than

Agnes. It seems likely that Eileen would be the Miss Jones mentioned, staying to help with the new baby.

Sue Ellis lodged at Brynteg with the family (she came from Llanfyllin) as she was a pupil teacher at Berriew

School. It seems likely that Nurse Aggie Ellis was related to Sue, perhaps a sister. Sue later became a

missionary and worked for years in Papua New Guinea. She married a fellow missionary, Bob Rankin; I met

Page 7: BERRIEW NEWSLETTER · Finally just a note about August Bank Holiday, the shop will be on normal hours, but the Post Office will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday. BERRIEW DEFIBRILLATOR

them both when they visited my parents in 1952 or 3 during our time in Paisley, Scotland. Sue still spoke

Welsh and made friends with our Welsh corgi, Ianto, who had been bred by Welsh speaking people in Port

Talbot, and responded better to commands in Welsh rather than English - though he had to learn English as

Father's Welsh was rather limited by then: "Tyd yma!" worked when "Come here!" might be ignored. Sue

chatted to him in Welsh and he sat adoringly at her feet.

I'm afraid I can't help with Penysarn Cottage (presumably now demolished, as Peter Watkin can't identify it).

My husband suggests that a search of Census returns for 1911 and 1921 might be useful.

My husband and I usually spend our summer holiday in Montgomeryshire, but have cancelled this year. I

note that the newsletter had some of the handicraft classes for 2021, so hope to see you all at Berriew Show

then with entries in hand. Best wishes. Glenys McKee.

Also from Glenys:

I found in my father’s collection an Ordnance Survey map published in 1836. It shows a place called Pen-y-

soryn. It is off the Manafon Road, about halfway between Berriew and Manafon: turn right just after Ty

Coch. We looked up the census returns for 1911, but they are not easy to search using place names, they

want personal names. I think, in common parlance, Penysoryn could easily be said as Penysarn. This place is

not marked on the 1953 map. Please pass this additional information on to Peter Watkin, and wish him good

luck!

Covid Update

Well maybe by the time you read this we may be in a position to restart classes, watch this space!

The class will be adapted to be Covid safe.

One thing I will have to do is ask people to book a place at the class just so I have some idea of numbers. I think to start with I will restrict numbers to 12 people, this is not usually a problem but I will need to be cautious to start, see how it goes.

Anyone interested in starting the class please call me on the Tel numbers shown below.

A reminder of a subject I left off with back in March, Pranayama:-

Pranayama

We pay so little attention to our breath, why should we, it just happens? But often with the stresses and strains of our lives our breathing becomes maybe shallow and rapid, tense without us realising. In yoga we focus a lot of attention on the breath, learning particular yogic breathing techniques which are known as Pranayama. This helps us in several ways, the way we breath can often be affected by stress focusing attention on the breath re learning how to breath or just using the breath as a focus of attention will help calm cluttered minds. Pranayama directly works on the nervous system. Daily Pranayama positively affects autonomic nervous system which controls and governs essential functions of the body like the heart rate, respiration and blood pressure – It just gives you a technique to help you relax!

I will put up some new posters and put a message on the local web/facebook pages when I know when I can restart but when it does it will be same time and place as before - Yoga Classes at the Community Hall in Castle Caereinion every Thursday - 6.30pm till 8.00pm – Cost £5.00/class. Call Richard on 01938850578 or 07583079423 for more information

NATIONAL GARDEN SCHEME: POWYS GARDENS OPEN FOR CHARITY September 2020

If like us you have spent so much more time in your gardens this summer you may be

interested in news from The National Garden Scheme as they launch a new initiative. You

will know that it is only in the last few weeks that we have been able to visit gardens

open for charity. As such the funding the NGS donates to many of the nursing charities

will be much reduced this year. To address this Mary Berry, our president, is launching The Great British

Garden Party which is intended to celebrate your garden and help support our nurses.

During the week of 14th - 20th September, the NGS charity is inviting everyone to host an event in their

garden. This is open to ALL garden owners, not just those who have registered with NGS. Whether you

choose to host an al fresco lunch, afternoon tea, Prosecco by candlelight or a plant sale from your garden

everyone can join in and help raise funds for the various nursing charities the NGS supports. The idea is to,

within social distancing guidelines, invite friends or family to enjoy your garden and make a donation.

For more information, including invitations and posters visit:

ngs.org.uk/gardenparty where you can register your interest and sign up to host an event.

September is also the month to register your garden for next year, if you have previously opened your garden

you just need to go to the NGS website and register for 2021. However if you have spent a lot of time in

your garden this year and it is looking beautiful you might like to consider opening your garden for us next

year. We are always looking for new gardens. If you would like to share your garden please contact our

County Organiser, Susan Paynton by email susan.paynton@ngs or call her on 01686 650531.

Finally, we have one garden open at the end of August,

31st August Little House, Llandinam

And the following in September:

5th September Little House, Llandinam

6th September Hurdley Hall, Churchstoke

10th & 11th September Tranquility Haven, Whitton.

Open for groups by arrangement: Fron Heulog, Berriew. SY21 8QJ and Maesfron Hall, Trewern, Welshpool.

SY21 8EA.

Under the new guidance all visits must be pre-booked on line by going to the NGS website and look for

book a visit.

Some garden owners are adding dates for opening on a weekly basis and again this information can be found

on the website of our Facebook page.
