    Dear Father Vasey,

[am. sending to you the original copy of my letter to Father Tutas and the original copy of t}1e letter of Brother Bernard Pleimann ir1 which he requests a dispensation frorr1 his perpetual vows. so that you can act upon this im1nediately, if that is wit}1 the General i\dn1inistration.

I am doing this, your agreement

I arrt sendlng carbon co-pies of all this n1aterial to F'atl1er Tt1tas 1 and I am sending it directly to the General Arlministration and not to Africa.

At the present I d(i not know of any otlircr religious in the Province wi.th perµetual V-O\VS \.vho ar(~ thinking of asking for a dispensation. This is

goc0d news, and l hope that I an1 not too optimistic, for the. end of the school year has not yet come nor have we gone through the summer. l-·{01,,vever at preser1t it seerns that only a couple of temporary professed \vlil be askl.ng not to ren.e1,.v their vows this summer. It looks, therefore, as though our perseverance rate this year will be good. I hope this is

so and st.1ch is our prayer.

Presently we ·have alrearl_y approved four for the novitiate for next year. There is a p.ossibility of one or the other besides these four. This is also good for us.

    P. S. I am wondering if the Sacred Congregation is still working on the laicization of Father Peter Choo. You will remember that we submitted a request for a laicization of Pete Choo without his knowledge of this. I am wondering what might be the status in his case at this time. Thanks for any information you can give us in this regard.

    Dear Barney,

    'OJ Ir 'Vj

    lJ

I have received your letter in which you requested a dispensation from your perpetual vows. 1 have forwarded your letter to the General Administration, and asked that they petition Rome that you be dispensed from your perpetual vowa. As soon as I receive any in1ormation from Rome, 1 will contact you.

Certainly I am sorry that you are asking for this dispensation. However. Brother Roger mentioned that you. did not want to be dissaaded from seeking the dispensation, so we have proceeded with requesting your dispensation from the Sacr0d Congregation.

I do hope that all will go well with you during the remainder of this year, and that you will begin to make plans for your future life, so that when the dispensation arrives, yoi1 will be a.ble to adjust easily to the lay life. Be assured you are in our prayers. May your Easter be a blessed and joyous one.

Aa soon as you have received this document, you have ten days to decide if you w;u1t to accept the dispensation. When you receive this document, if yon are still definitely determined to leave the Society of Mary, I would advhe that you signd:he enclosed return postcard to me immediately, As soon as you sign this postcard, your vows are dispensed.

You have ten days in which. to do this, If &!ter ten daya, you have not signed the enclosed poetcard, your vows remain in effect and you are a Mal'ianist in good standing. Later on then, if you would ever again decide to leave the Society of Mary, you would need begin again to request a dispensation. Dear Father Tutas:

1 am enclosing with this letter the correspondence of Brother Bernard Pleimann addressed to Pope Paul VI in which Brother Pleimann asks for a dispensation from his perpetual vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability.

As Brother Pleimann indicates in his letter to His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, he was professed in the Society of Mary in 1935, Because Brother Pleirnann is already in his middle fifties. we have endeavored to dissuade him from seeking a dispensation. Several years ago·, Brother Pleima11n wanted to ask for a dispensation, and I at that time dissuaded him. On this·~~asion when he first wrote to me telling me about his intention to ''seek a dispensation, I asked Brother Roger Richter, the Assistant Pro-vincial, ~ho was going to visit Japan to talk to Brother Pleimann about this. Brother Pleimann does not want to be dissuaded from seeking a dispensation at this time.

I have consulted with members of the Provincial Council, and we agree that we should send to you this letter of Brother Pleimann asking for a dispensation.

Brother Richter, the Assistant Provincial, upon his visit to Yokohama learned from the members of the religious community in which Brother Pleimann is presently living, that Brother Pleimann is drinking liquor quite heavily and is frequently intoxicated. He has been visiting saloons and has been seeing in the presence oi' women, which has been disconcert-ing for the religious con1munity. I do not believe, from what I know of

    Hello Steve,

[email protected] Tuesday, July 05, 2005 2:23 PM Steve Glodek Pending investigations

Hope your summer is going well. Today I received a phone call from the lawyer, Jim Burns, who is following up on alleged cases from Junipero Serra HS, Gardena. You referred him to me.

Just a quick summary on my part: I find it difficult to believe that either Jim McGloin or Barney Pleimann were guilty of inappropriate action with young men.

dlllililll!lllllllllllllillllli.-who, I believe, is making the accusations was a little "different." At his introduction to me at the reunion of his class in 1984, he openly told me he was gay. (What do you do for an encore?) He may very well have not like either one, since I doubt if math (BP) and science (JMcG) were among his better subjects (conjecture on my part). He definitely did not tell me in the presence of another member of the class that he was "molested" by a Brother. He claims that another student was abused by BP. Knowing the student and since He has not made the accusation, I question it. I taught all three students. I hope that this gives you directly this summary.

You continue to be in my prayers, especially in dealing with these accusations.

    Dear Bernie:

I have your information sheet here on your visit home for this summer. I have noted also that you will be the recepiet1t of a grant in Nch·man, Okla~ homa, l have p11ssed this .information on to Bi·other Roger Richter,

Since your trip to Oklahoma will be financed by your grant, but the rest of your trip .to Cincinnati a,;_d Cincinn~.ti. back to Honolulu will be a province expense, l think that it would be good for you to write to Brother Frank Lahey and to explain to hi.m how you wish your tickets to be made out. It may be that youwill need to disti.nct tickets~ Also, you may want to have Brother Frank to send you opo;>n tickets so that it will make it convenient for you to fill them in. once you have definite dates.

I just did not want. t.o have ym1 left stranded conce1·ning ticket:»; so I am writing to you about therµ at this time. I am sure that Brothe.r Frank Lahey will be happy to take care of the tickets for you when you write to him. i do think that you would do well to have Brother Frank send you open tickets. lf there ii:! an~ other. arrangement that is more convenient than the one .that I suggested, do not Hesitate to aak Brother Lahey to make them for you.

Thanks for all the wonderful \vork that you are doing in Honolulu, Bernie, I am very happy that you have l'eceived the grant to study in Oklahoma this summer. I am sure that you will profit much from the studies·and enjoy the trip to this state. Keep us in your prayers as you are in ours.
