We have much to be grateful this year as we enter into what many of us know as a month of gratitude and thankfulness! We began our year at Bermuda Hundred UMC focused on seeing God’s vision for our church, and seeking to discern God’s wisdom for the future of our ministry!

In January we focused on living a Complaint Free Life so that we could grow in God’s grace and find beauty in the life God has given us. As we moved into Lent, we worked on discovering how we, like the disciples, are called and sent to serve Jesus Christ. We journeyed through the Easter

Season focusing on the ways we Encounter Christ. Beginning this Pentecost we experienced knowing how the Holy Spirit leads and guides us in our Invisible God sermon series. And then we focused on what love does in our Love Does sermon series and how God’s love not only compels us but propels us forward in our mission to love God and others. We wrapped up our summer reflecting on what we have learned in our “What I learned this Sum-mer” sermon series seeing the impact stopping to reflect can have on our life and remembering that we are all life-long learners. This fall we continued to learn and seek wisdom in our series “Making Sense of Life” as we focused on the Wisdom Literature of the bible found in Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. This wisdom has led us through October as we’ve continued to pursue a life where we fear the Lord, where we seek to be humbly before God in awe, for fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. This wisdom from God leads us to know God is here with

us for good and we too, want to be here for good- to serve God and one another. In our Here for Good Sermon series we’ve recognized that we can be here for good by earning all we can, saving all we can, and giving all we can. That’s how we’re here for good – to reach all we can for Jesus Christ! Our year has been one of intentionally pursuing lives that: grow in the grace of Christ, seek to live as disciples of Christ, love others as Jesus loves, and move forward in the wisdom of God’s call.

This year we have sought God’s vision for our church. We know God planted out church 59 years ago beginning with a seed planted in a log–cabin church on Point of Rocks Road. God has grown our church over these year to reach out into the growing Enon Community! And God’s work in our church is here for good! The visioning of this year has helped us to celebrate and give thanks for what God had done, to pay attention to what God is doing, and to boldly follow where God is leading. Throughout the month of November our Sermon Series will focus on God’s Vision for our church. We’ll celebrate who we are and what God has called us to do, and how we are led to do it! Yet, none of that matters if we do not clearly share why. Why do we do what we do? Why are we disciples? Why do we love? Why do we serve? Why does any of it matter? The answer is Jesus Christ. We are who we are and do what we do because of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. We love because Jesus was sent to love us; we love because God first loved us. We serve because Jesus served us. We forgive because Jesus forgives us. In God we live and move and have our being and this is why we want others to become disciples of Jesus Christ! For when we encounter Christ and grow in His grace our lives and indeed the world can be changed!

United Methodist Youth Fellowship

October was a great month for our youth. We had some meaningful devotion time and started the Earn. Save. Give. bible study that is geared for youth. Thank you to Charles Woodard for volunteering and leading our Jr. High group one night! I think his ears are still ringing. Lisa Crowder was a big help when she helped lead the first lesson of Earn. Save. Give. It was a blast! The youth also volunteered with Stop Hunger Now and a few were able to come to Harvest Fest. November will be our first annual Health and Wellness fair fundraiser! The best way to support our youth is by showing up and checking out all the great health related vendors that will be there. Are you a vendor? Contact Laurel about vendor space! The t-shirt fundraiser was postponed a little, but keep your eyes open for the order form. I would also like to thank Tyler Craddock and Bill Talley for cooking us dinner in October. We are always looking for volunteers to help out during the meetings, and to provide dinner.

Children’s Ministry

Thank you to Meredith Steinbraker and Sheila LaRue for volunteering in the children's church during October. The children are also doing their own version of the earn, save, give study. They are really loving it! Check out our art gallery in the hallway across from the nursery to see some of the things your children are doing in children's church. In November we will continue the earn save give study and then start our practices for the Christmas program! I know all the children can't wait!

Another event going on in November is the rock and roll summit for fourth and fifth graders. Pastor Beth will be leading this. Please let her know if your children will attend. It should be a wonderful time full of roller skating, rock climbing and a terrific devotional. We are still in need of volunteers for children's church.

Our Confirmation class spent time learning about Christianity’s Jewish roots last week. We are so grateful to

Congregation Beth Ahabah for their hospitality and generosity last Friday night as we worshiped with them

for Shabbat Shalom! Executive Director Russell Finer helped each of us follow along throughout the

worship service! We even learned how to sing and pray in Hebrew! Rabbi Martin P. Beifield, Jr. gave his

time to us generously after the service during the time of fellowship answering questions and teaching us

more about Reform, Conservative, and Orthodox Judaism. Sarah Beck-Berman, the Cantorial Soloist for the

congregation, not only lifted our hearts in worship with her beautiful voice, but also spent a great deal of time

sharing with our students and opened the scroll again to share with them and teach about the Hebrew

language. Each of our confirmation students left knowing we had been part of a holy time of prayer and

worship with our Jewish brothers and sisters. The experience of confirmation is leading our youth on

journey to know more what they believe who they are as disciples of Jesus Christ.

The response to the monthly item collection has been fantastic! Collection week is November 16-23 and we will have a "packing party" before the 16th (details to come). Our collection items for November will be plastic shoeboxes ($1 each at Dollar Tree) and donations to cover the shipping fees of $7 per shoebox. We could also use some more toy items to fill up our boxes!

We will have the opportunity to volunteer at the collection center at Crestwood Presbyterian Church during Collection Week. I will pass this information on as soon as I hear from them.

Safe Sanctuaries Training

The Discipleship Team will conduct Safe Sanctuaries

Training for all who volunteer with children and youth

on Sunday, November 22 from 12-2pm with lunch

provided. A second training will be offered on

Sunday, January 31, 12-2pm.

Safe Sanctuaries is an overt expression in making

congregations safe places where children, youth, and

elders may experience the abiding love of God and

fellowship within the community of faith. All who

volunteer with children and youth ministry are asked

to participate in one of these training opportunities.

Earn. Save. Give. - BHUMC 2015 Stewardship Program & Consecration Sunday

Dear BHUMC, A Stewardship reminder to all that Consecration Sunday is on November 1st. We will ask that everyone turn in your 2016 commitment cards and then partake in the Celebration of Sharing pot luck lunch to follow. Please prayerfully consider your connection to this commitment and all that we have done in the years past with our giving - think/pray about challenging your stewardship commitment for 2016 to reach new giving heights, to be more consistent, or to start giving. The 2016 Consecration if very important….BUT, let’s not forget about our current giving and stewardship goals as we finish out 2015. We will let the below tracker slide speak for itself in regards to the wonderful success our church has experienced today as a result of our givers. Currently (through September) we within 2% of our commitment number for the year and have funded 7 out of 9 possible apportionment payments – WAY TO GO! Again – CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU. We continue the challenge to achieve our 2015 goal of funding 100% of our budget and apportionments for the 3rd consecutive year. Just 3 months remaining and a little less ground for us to make up. We can do it, we will do it!

United Methodist Women

The UMW will be putting up 2 Mitten Trees again this year. One will be in the hall downstairs or the fellowship hall, the other will be outside the Pastor's Office. The items we will be collecting undies, socks, hats, scarves and gloves. The trees will be up November 15th thru November 29th . The items will go to local elementary schools grades K-5. The UMW Advent Retreat is Saturday, December 5th at VUMAC, Blackstone, Va. The cost is $13.00 for Registration with Lunch. Sharing and Worship is 9:30 – 2:00. The registration deadline is November 15th. Please see Betty or me if you plan to go. The next UMW Meeting is November 16th at 7:00 in the Grundy Parlor. It is time to start planning the CCHASM Thanksgiving Meal Gift Package Program for 2015!

This year’s program will be held, as usual, at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds in the Exhibition Center located at 10300 Courthouse Road, Chesterfield, VA 23832.

Please turn in all monetary and food contributions to BHUMC no later than Sunday, November 1st. Make your check out to BHUMC and write “CCHASM” in the check memo.

Items for Thanksgiving Meal Gift Packages:

1 40 oz. Can (Large) of Yams or Sweet Potatoes

1 13 oz. Box of Mashed Potatoes

1 14 oz. Can of Cranberry Sauce

2 15 oz. Cans of Green Vegetables

2 15 oz. Cans of Corn

2 Boxes or Packages of Stuffing Mix

CCHASM VOLUNTEER INFORMATION All volunteers must be at least 12 years of age and must be able to lift 25 pounds. Each child under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who will stay with the child

throughout the Volunteer process. (One parent/or legal guardian per child) Individuals wishing to Volunteer should come to the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds Exhibition Center on:

Monday Nov. 16th From 9 AM to 5 PM (Sorting & Packing Work)

Tuesday Nov. 17th From 11 AM - 7 PM (Sorting & Packing)

Friday Nov. 20th– From 9 AM to 12 PM (Distribution to the Homebound) and final packaging if needed.

Saturday Nov. 21st - From 6:30 AM – 7 PM (Package Distribution)

Volunteers need to go to the CCHASM Volunteer Desk when they arrive and will be asked to sign a Hold Harmless and Indemnity Agreement/Photo Release prior to Volunteering (agreement will be available at the Volunteer Desk during the event). There is no need to let us know when you are arriving – please volunteer at your own schedule.

Our church, along with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts packaged 10,152 meals for STOP HUNGER NOW! There were folks of all ages helping to fill, weigh, gather, count and pack the meals in boxes to be shipped off to a country with people who are in need of food. Thanks to everyone who raised funds, who purchased items, or donated money! The CCHASM Thanksgiving Meals collection is underway! Our church has made a monetary pledge of $1500.00 to CCHASM for Thanksgiving Meals. However, if you would like to put together a meal kit that’s great! CCHASM’s goal this year is to provide 3000 meal kits to hungry families for Thanksgiving. The final turn in date is November 1st. Operation Christmas Child is in its final month for collecting items to be put in shoe boxes and shipped to children who don’t receive a gift for Christmas. This month the collection is for boxes and $7.00 for shipping! There will be a packing party in mid November. Thanks to everyone who is donating food to the Backpack program! We have 15 children that we are providing food for, so please continue to give. This program would not be possible without everyone’s support! If you would prefer to give monetarily please make the check out to the church and write backpack program in the memo. The UMM last met on October 20th.

We decided to support the Youth Group by signing up to attend the meetings and help Laurel whenever possible. Four men signed up and I attended the Youth Group meeting on September 27th. The UMM will pay for meals when none are provided.

We are in the process of finding a way to thank our police department.

The Hill Project is on hold right now. I'm talking with Jesse Smith at the County to try and get something accomplished. I have also asked Kathleen McNinch to design a new landscape plan for the area of our property bounded by Florence and Route 10 (that area at the big tree). Kathleen said she should have something for us by Christmas.

We presented Bibles to our upcoming 3rd graders. This is always the highpoint of our year. Thanks to Pastor Beth for allowing the UMM to stand up for Christ and support our youth.

We will approach the Boy Scouts about painting the picnic tables. Gordon Miller has volunteered to provide a power washer to clean the tables before they are painted.

We will be cleaning out the storage area at the pavilion. I have talked with the Preschool and they will clean out their area at the same time. We will also build shelving in that space and add hanging hardware to get that area organized.

We are looking for a storage shed for the Scouts to use just for their supplies.

We have scheduled a Fish Fry for October 28th. Our next meeting is on November 17th.
