attending InnoTrans 2016?Oladipupo: I wish to attend InnoTrans 2016 in order to gain international awareness and exposure in the railway industry. Being one of AREMA Career Award at InnoTrans 2016 recipients will give me the opportunity to attend the Career Forum and meet with young professionals as well as students. Plus, I am looking forward to having a direct conversation with potential employers and experiencing their services and products first hand. Soote: I see events such as InnoTrans 2016 as critical for me to be success-

ful in pursuing opportunities within the rail industry as a civil engineer. I expect to obtain a better understand-ing of the future of railroads and how to further my career by meeting with experts and other students from around the world at the Career Forum.

What are your professional goals in the future?

Soote: I want to transition from rail-road operations to a role in my field of study as a civil engineer. Upon gradu-ating from university and completing the fundamentals of engineering exam next year I plan to enter the rail engi-neering field as an Engineer in Training.

Oladipupo: My professional goal is to become a professional engineer work-ing in Railway infrastructures.

Rail travel 4.0 - “Made in Germany” Around the globe there are more

people than ever who wish to have ac-cess to sustainable mobility for their everyday life. The threat of total grid-lock in many megacities, exasperat-ing search of a parking lot, unbearable smog. All this calls for completely new mobility concepts worldwide which

InnoTrans Report: What are the most significant challenges and

opportunities VIA Rail Canada is faced with? Desjardins-Siciliano: VIA Rail operates primarily on freight rail infrastructure. In fact, VIA Rail only owns 3 percent of the tracks over which it operates. This operating environment represents a significant challenge. In order to address this, VIA Rail has developed a project which proposes to build a dedicated passenger rail corridor, be-tween Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City, the busiest in Canada. A railway

dedicated to passenger trains would eliminate the challenges of sharing tracks with freight trains. It would al-low for a greater number of frequen-cies, shorter trip times, decrease GHG emissions and ultimately a safer and more reliable and seamless service. The positive economic impact of the Dedicated Tracks Project would be substantial. Whether through reduced congestion, increased pro-ductivity or employment creation, Canada would benefit. Furthermore, this strategy would open the door to better connectivity with our inter-

modal partners such as airlines, bus companies and car sharing services.

How will passenger railway change how Canadians will travel

over the next 10 years? The transportation sector is one of the biggest contributors to air pol-lution in Canada. In 2014, it was re-sponsible for 27.7 percent of national GHG emissions, and of that 52 per-cent was specifically attributable to the use of personal vehicles. Right now, in Canada, mobility (especially inter-city) means pollution. Given this, our only choice is to reduce

the ratio of mobility to emissions. Passenger rail can help bring the transformational change required to reduce the transportation sec-tor’s contribution to climate change and smog. At VIA Rail, we have been working for years to further dimin-ish our environmental impact by im-proving the efficiency of our trains, a commitment we reaffirmed by taking the COP21 pledge to support inter-national goals to reduce our carbon footprint. We are proud to say that all of these goals can be achieved through the Dedicated Tracks Project.

The sky is the limit

Increasing urbanisation, popula-tion growth, progressive digitalisa-tion and automation of the living spaces – there is a long list of chal-lenges to which the transport sec-tors rail, air, navigation and road must increasingly adapt in future. Visionary mobility concepts are thus called for and they will also play an important role in the framework of

InnoTrans 2016. As an example, the Hyperloop will be an unprecedented emerging means of transport. This is a high-speed transportation system that shall move electrically driven trans-port vehicles travelling at speeds of up to 1,225 kilometres per hour through a partially evacuated tube on pillars. The ideas generator Elon Musk had called developers of the sector around

the world to put his concept into prac-tice. An example for a possible way of realisation will be presented by the US-American company Hyperloop One at InnoTrans 2016. CEO Rob Lloyd considers Hyperloop as a “fifth mode of transport that will not replace but connect the already existing modes of transport in a cost-efficient and envi-ronment-friendly way.” Trade visitors are invited to the stand in hall 3.2/201 where an interactive iPad application will enable them to test the difference between Hyperloop and conventional means of transport. A further approach for the Hyperloop implementation will be presented by the Canadian startup

TransPod Inc. in hall 2.2./401 Trade visitors will find the cen-tre for creative ideas and plan-ning around the transportation of the future in the Future Mo-bility Park between halls 20 and 21 in the socalled ’Trumpet’. For two decades prior to the economic crisis of 2009, combined Transport averaged an annual growth rate of close to 7%. This propelled cT to become the largest and only dynamically growing production system of rail freight.

Current issues of EuropeanCombined Transport

towards Russia and China; the EU sanctions against Russia have caused a decline in volumes destined to Rus-sia, the migration crisis has made transiting rail freight traffic through the Balkan peninsula totally unreli-able, while migration-related distur-bances also affected the reliability of rail freight traffic between France and the UK on the Channel Tunnel.

• Cheap oil: since the price of traction electricity does not follow the price of diesel, made cheap by the collapse of the price of oil, rail freight did not gain the ability to match the freight rate cuts implemented by road hauliers, which undermines the price competitiveness of - especially short-er haul - Combined Transport.

• Issues of rail freight: 1. there is a lack of train paths for freight trains on some highly used sections of the European rail network; 2. the quality performance of rail freight is inconsistent: while the punctuality of freight trains is near or over 90 per-cent in the domestic network of the UK and the networks of Sweden and Norway, on the continent the same figure is closer to 60 percent; and 3. the deficiencies of the network in terms of technical parameters and interoperability undermine the pro-ductivity.

Four passenger trains per hour instead of six

While external issues and global (oil price) developments are what they are, a lot could be done regard-ing the competitiveness of rail freight in Europe. Politicians need to explain

sis and the collapse of the price of oil caused a change in the decade-long growth trend: first came a gen-eral decline that was recovered in the meantime, than a decline in shorter distance consignments in favour of long-distance relations. In principle Combined Transport is competitive when the distance to be covered by rail or other sustainable modes of transport performing the long-dis-tance section of the transport chain exceeds 300 kilometre. However it is a fact that the actual average distance covered by a CT consignment aver-aged 882 kilometre in 2015. Subse-quently, shorter distance CT services are suffering.

the main present challengess of Combined transport may be grouped as follows:

• External issues: due to the cri-sis involving the Ukraine, that coun-try is difficult to be used for transit

to their citizens that having six PSO passenger trains an hour means that the right lanes of our motorways will be occupied by a “train of trucks”. If only four passenger trains were run-ning an hour, it would open up two train paths for 750 metre-long freight trains, which in turn could remove over 100 trucks from the roads.

Heavy preference for passenger traffic

There is a similar problem with traffic priority rules: firstly they are different from country to country and secondly there is a heavy pref-erence for passenger traffic. Subse-quently, along the same lines where freight trains achieve a punctuality of 60 percent, passenger trains deliver a punctuality performance of over 90 percent! Interestingly, in the Nordic

countries and the UK, where the train in time has the right of way, both passenger and freight trains deliver superior results to the rest of Europe.

Finally, the quantity and the ori-entation of investments must be mentioned. Here also a preference for passenger-related projects can be observed, while freight related pro-jects often suffer delays. Funding is often not provided for harmonisation of the maximum train length (750 metre), the axle load and the profile gauge.

UIRR, as the industry association of Combined Transport, works hard to catalyse the correction of these deficiencies. In the same time UIRR pleads for an intermodal initiative and a better regulatory framework in Eu-rope, in order to achieve the level play-ing field between all existing modes of transport in the logistic chains.

After his activities as Bombardier site man-ager of the Vienna and Bautzen plants he became “Head of Pro-

ject Management, Operations and customer Support” in 2007 for the “Light Rail Vehicles” (LRV) business and in March 2010 he was promoted President of Light Rail Vehicles. In January 2015, Germar was appointed as leader of Bombardier Transportation’s

The “Combi solution” is a project for the further development of the tram network in Karlsruhe. It con-sists of three construction lots: the Light Rail tunnel, the tram line and the tram-free pedestrian zone. It is being carried out by the Karlsruhe based Schieneninfrastruktur-Gesell-schaft (KASIG) and building com-panies like BeMo Tunnelling GmbH. “The great bandwidth of compact machines from Wacker Neuson has convinced us, as we can cover many operations on this major construc-tion site, among them many very spe-cial tasks”, explains Werner Seibald, foreman at BeMo Tunnelling.

Various machines were rented for the construction work, among them also four new 10-ton track excavators ET90 as well as a battery-powered wheel loader WL20e. It was specially with the wheel loader that Wacker Neuson could convince, as there is a need to use electric devices that are free of emissions for the tunnelling under air pressure. Two electric mo-tors, one each for propulsion and for the working hydraulics, make sure that the performance characteristics of the electric wheel loader WL20e are equal to those of a conventional

machine. A further positive effect is the considerable reduction of noise emissions. Furthermore, the energy cost of a WL20e wheel loader are be-low that of a diesel powered model.

Less fuel, more power

The 10-ton excavators of the lat-est generation that are being used in Karlsruhe also have a number of advantages: They save up to 20 per-cent fuel and still have a better per-formance. Furthermore they have ad-ditional features like the load sensing hydraulic system for easy and precise operation, innovative kinematics for powerful excavation and an innova-tive machine and cab design.

A special issue had to be con-sidered for the use in Karlsruhe: A special redesign for use in tunnel construction had to be carried out quickly. Wacker Neuson was able to make it possible at once. Diesel par-ticle filters that are subsidised by the accident insurance company were retrofitted. This ensures trouble-free working conditions.

The new generation of milling machines

In cooperation with Mevert Maschinenbau GmbH, Lauen-hagen and Gleisbaumechanik Brandenburg / H. Kirchmöser the milling machine HSM (Highspeed Milling Machine) was born. The machine has received certification by the German Federal Railway Authority and was approved in April 2016 by DB Netz AG.

HSM is a self-propelled ma-chine composed of three vehicles in standard vehicle design. Milling is possible on various main line networks well as on metro net-works and takes place in synchro-nisation. Chips are aspirated di-rectly at the machine. The milling modules guarantee an extremely

flat cutting into the rail by the mill-ing tools thus reducing the remain-ing error as compared to traditional milling modules.

HSM can be used for maintenance work or for preventive rail works. The latter is a novel application field of

mobile rail works. A high work-ing speed can be easily realised, as well as minimal material removals between 0.2 to 0.3 millimetres per milling module.

The building measures that were carried out with the participation of five enterprises included, among others, the renewal of the tracks, the conversion of all stations for a barri-er-free access and the renewal of the catenary. These works included 280 special deep foundations for new ca-tenary masts that were carried out by Spitzke. In order to make the best use of the three months of full closure of the line, two drill and pile drivers, the Krupp I and the O&K I were deployed in parallel. The special deep founda-tions had an absolute priority over

originally been developed for oil ex-traction. The piling device is driven into the ground with 25 cubic metres of compressed air per minute. The challenge lies in driving the in-hole hammer into the rock with the right speed in order to prevent a blockage of the edge area of the drilled hole by major chipped-off rock fragments. A blockage of the ring space would cause a wedging of the in-hole ham-mer in the drilled hole that would need a laborious recovery.

The second major challenge was the changing and difficult soil con-ditions along the line. Piling was carried out in loose soil by the Krupp I while the O&K I drilled into the rocky ground with a compressed air in-hole ham-mer from the USA. This method had

further special difficulties. There were five pumps operating each day in or-der to keep the substructure for the foundations of the masts as dry as pos-sible. The renovation of the Dreiseen-bahn is part of the “Breisgau S-Bahn

2020” project. All regional railway lines in the Greater Freiburg area will be upgraded to in order to create an S-Bahn system with daily train ope-rations at half-hour intervals.

Felix®: the evolution of a mobile robot by Loccioni

Automatic turnout inspection During InnoTrans 2014, the rail-

way industry could witness the debut of the Felix® robot, a unique system of its kind dedicated to the automatic measurement of geo-metrical as well as specific dimen-sional features for turnouts and rail-way tracks. The system is currently deployed across the entire Italian railway network and will now be ex-panded internationally with the sup-port of the regional Loccioni offices in Germany, the USA and China.

The Loccioni Group, an expert in measurement and automatic con-trol systems, has a separate busi-ness unit dedicated to the railway and transport sector. The close-knit cooperation and the continuous ex-change of know-how between the highly specialised personnel of RFI

(Rete Ferroviaria Italiana) on railway maintenance procedures and the Loc-cioni Group with its measurement and automation competences allowed to engineering of the first switch inspec-tion robot. Felix® has been designed and equipped with a contactless vision technology that is able to automatical-ly inspect railway turnouts and tracks, delivering objective and certified data.

This limits errors both in the data acquisition and transfer phases. Last but not the least, Felix® improves the safety of operating personnel: by remotely controlling operations, two operators can carry out the measure-ments without entering the railway track area. In the last two years the development of Felix® has steadily continued, with cutting-edge com-ponents and new software architec-tures allowing the robot to perform additional measurements such as wear under 45 degrees and wear of the point – stock rail couples. A further result has been achieved by strongly reducing the operative cycle time: the upgraded Felix® model per-forms about twice as many measure-ments in a given time unit.

tÜv NoRD tests Gmeinder locomotives for eu-wide certificationAs a Notified Body, Designated Body and Assessment Body, TÜV NORD has certified shunting locomotives manufactured by Gmeinder in Mosbach, Germany, in the framework of approval throughout the EU. The Gmeinder locomotives DE75 BB-H and DE75 BB-D are shunters for heavy shunting service in big industrial areas or marshalling yards. One of their specialities is that they can be used with different types of power sources. For example two diesel aggregates or one lithium-ion battery-pack combined with a diesel aggregate can be used. The power transmis-sion is electric in all cases. This saves up to 40 percent of fuel and noise plus reducing other emissions. Using lithium-ion batteries enables their mobility within the factory hall without causing health and environmental emissions in the working area. Furthermore, power can also be supplied by live rails. consequently, the locomotive can be used for all imaginable kinds of industrial requirements. The approval of the vehicles throughout the European Union is scheduled for the endof 2018. A condition for the EU-wide approval but also at national level is the fulfilment of a set of Requirements catalogues of requirements the respect of which TÜV Nord will strictly control in its role as a Notified and Designated Body.In the European process these are the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI). The following TSIs will be applied: LOc & PAS TSI, SRT TSI, NOI TSI, TSI ZZS. In this context the company’s quality management system will also be controlled. Additionally, in the national process all the national technical requirements, which have not been considered for the European use, will be taken into account. TÜV Nord as an Assessment Body controls also the requirements of the European Regulation EG/402/2013. This concerns the evaluation of the risk analysis and the setting up of a safety assessment report. The sealing systems provide supe-rior protection against risks caused by fire, smoke, water, rodents, tensions, vibration and shock waves. They are designed for cable sealing, cable man-agement and smooth, yet firm, reten-tion of cables and pipes. The seals are available in large and compact versions as well as with Ex and EMC performance.

In cooperation with the cable pro-tection system provider PMA, Roxtec has designed an innovative fire bar-

TPS key products include auxil-iary power conversion systems (APS), battery chargers and converters. A revolutionary auxiliary converter was tailored to the client’s needs for an In-ternational Monorail project.

This Monorail APS boasts many unique features including a liquid cooling system designed as a modu-lar line replaceable unit (LRU). For easy maintenance these LRUs are equipped with quick-release no-leak couplings that are integrated into the main vehicle cooling circuit. The 3-phase, single phase and DC conver-sion circuits were optimised to meet the specifications while still achieving the smallest space and lowest weight for each module. The enclosure was manufactured using weight reduc-tion techniques more frequently seen in the aircraft industry.

Software for diagnosis and data acquisition

In addition to the power modules, it also features extensive diagnosis and data logging facilities. These data can be accessed directly from the APS by a connection to a computer that runs the portable test equipment (PTE) software developed by TPS. The PTE is a diagnosis tool for inves-tigating the running parameters and the fault history on the APS product range designed and built by TPS.

DLR has developed an easy solu-tion to check rail networks. With the own road-rail vehicle RailDriVE® the institute has tested new tracking components under real conditions to analyse wrong influences and can now determine sections of line with high-precision. In order to analyse these data, DLR has developed a special software for railway opera-tors. “When the data are registered by our server, we can see exactly at which point the train should adapt, for example, its speed so as to cir-culate in an energy-efficient way on certain line sections.” explains Prof. Lemmer, Director of the DLR-Institute of Transportation Systems. The key of the matter: the software is a system which fits into a simple suitcase. “The suitcase is in a position to carry out measurements without having to close down a complete section of the line.” – explains Prof. Lemmer. “Measurements are there-fore extremely cost-efficient, since regular trains on their normal ’work-ing route’ serve as measurement vehicles“.

And to top it all: the software can do much more: it fits into a smart-phone as an app and can transmit actual position data from there to the server. Or scientists integrate it as a so-called worker into a con-struction site lamp, so as to indicate the length of construction sites. “Thanks to this we can issue real time warnings on dangerous sites” – stresses Prof. Lemmer. “The possi-bilities we have thanks to this small but fine software are tremendously diverse.“

In order to optimise the connection between recorder, Smart Terminal, IP-cameras and counting sensors, DResearch has additionally developed a high-quality, easy-to-in-

stall 10-port-switch. There are inter-esting innovations regarding software as well. DResearch has implemented the protocol set up according to the VDV301-guidelines (IBIS over IP). This will safely position the combi-systems of the Berlin manufacturer in the latest standards of the efficient vehicle-IT.

The deployment was accomplished in a short time frame and under very difficult lo-gistical conditions such as the very restricted space in the tunnel. “We are pleased to have played a central role in what is surely the most com-plex and sophisticated railway tun-nel project in the world. As a member of the Transtec Gotthard Consortium, Nokia has erected the complete communica-tions network in the worlds' currently longest railway tunnel. It enables a multitude of communication services that are important for the operative functions as well as for passengers.

The Transtec Gotthard Consortium had the overall responsibility for the deployment of the railway infrastruc-ture for the constructor of the tunnel, AlpTransit Gotthard AG, a subsidi-ary of SBB, the Swiss Federal Rail-ways (SBB). Nokia was responsible for the overall project management, engineering, installation, integration and maintenance of the complete telecommunications infrastructure in the 57-km-long tunnel. The network encompasses the SCADA-based tun-nel control system and IT solutions, multi-service Ethernet over IP/MPLS (Internet Protocol/Multi-protocol La-bel Switching) technology, emergency telephone and public address systems and incorporates wireless network-ing technologies, including GSM-R technology from Nokia, 3G/4G and Professional Mobile Radio. The com-munications network is a prerequi-site to ensure that railway passengers remain connected at any time to the outside world via voice and data ser-vices. At the same time emergency call and supervision systems guar-antee that freight and passengers reach their destination safely and on schedule.

At the upcoming InnoTrans 2016 international bus manu-facturers and the supply industry will have the pos-sibility for the first time ever to present their innovative vehicles, components and charging infrastructure sys-tems on a completely novel exhibition area. The so called “Bus Display” is centrally lo- cated in the Sommergarten of the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. Besides a Static Dis-play, the Bus Display also fea-tures a 500 metre long circular circuit, called: Demonstration Course. Here exhibitors may present their vehicles in mov-ing operation to an audience of international experts.

Debut with Solaris, Sileo, Siemens, vDL and others

Bus manufacturers from France, Poland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belarus, China and other countries have already secured their partici-pation at the premiere. This addi-tional exhibition area for buses will integrally round off the Pub-lic Transport segment  – its more

than 20,000 square metres being InnoTrans’ third biggest sector.

In compliance with an environ-mental-friendly local public trans-port system, the exhibitors will mainly focus on electromobility. The bus manufacturer Solaris Bus & Coach S.A. from Poland will, for instance, show an electrically operated bus, which can be powered by a plug-in, pantograph or an induc-

tion system. The neces-sary charging infrastruc-ture in form of a mobile charging station will be shown by Siemens AG’s Mobility Division in coopera-tion with Solaris. The Nether-lands will showcase a wholly electrically driven articulated bus, Citea SLFA-181 Electric from VDL Bus & Coach bv.

Special energy storage systems and super capaci-tors to shorten loading times are the main features of the electric bus exhibited by the Belarus manufacturer OJSC Managing holding company Belkommunmash and its Chi-nese partner company XIN-ZHU Corporation Chengdu Xinzhu Road & Bridge Ma-

chinery. Sileo GmbH from Salzgitter will present the battery-driven ar-ticulated coach “S18”.

To complete the Bus Display, the French company SA Lohr Industrie will provide information on “Cristal” at their outdoor booth. Besides a self-propelled module, this novel local transport system has a shuttle module with two to four vehicles linked together at its disposal.

eLv51 – allround solution for mobile air conditioning use in railways

The ELV51 weighs only 25 ki-los and was specially designed for railway vehicles. It offers a cooling performance between 7.5 and 25 kilowatts. This compressor con-vinces through a wide range of use and considerably contributes to an increased system efficiency.

Considering the increasing number of passengers with reduced mobility, there is more pressure on transport services to develop automatic doors which close even more safely. On the other side we find increasingly short-er cycle times, the strict observation of which imperatively requires fail-ure-free operation of the automatic doors.

In order to guarantee maximal passenger safety and failure-free operation at the same time, Mayser has developed a touchless capacitive sensor: the Non-Touch Detection System. It complements the applied safety-systems, which secure the au-tomatically controlled vehicle doors of public transport in compliance with EN 14752. These systems mostly rely on a tactile sensor technology. This means that the passengers have

Another advantage: while the de-tection field of light grids or scanners covers the entire boarding area, the Non-Touch Detection System only re-acts to movements in the immediate critical periphery of the sensor along the main closing edge, that is, only in case of an immediate risk of trapping or impulsion.
