Fairview Gala Features Music

of the Sixties

Fairview Hospital will present the Midtown Men, the original

cast members of Broadway’s “Jersey Boys,” at the 2014 Fairview Gala. The event will take place Saturday, September 20th at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington, preceded by a pre-show buffet reception to celebrate Fairview’s Second Century of Caring. The 2014 Gala will raise funds for new anesthesiology technology at Fairview, to be used for both outpatient and inpatient surgery, as well as medical care.

Tony Award winner Christian Hoff, Michael Longoria, Daniel Reichard and Tony Award nominee J. Robert Spencer will bring their sensational sound to Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, as stars of Fairview’s largest annual benefit. The evening will be full of favorite 60’s Hits from the Beatles, Beach Boys, Motown, Four Seasons and more. The show will be produced by Abby Schroeder, a resident of Great Barrington and leader in the entertainment industry.

Cheryl Raifstanger, a community, business and civic leader who serves on many organizations’ boards in the area will be the 2014 Gala honoree. She and her husband, John, founded Kwik Print in Great Barrington in 1974, in the basement of what is currently the Mahaiwe, with a second hand printer and Selectrix typewriter. Today, Kwik Print is a full service copy center which serves individuals, schools, businesses and organizations in the area. Cheryl has three children, two of whom now lead Kwik Print, and ten grandchildren. Cheryl has supported Fairview Hospital on numerous committees and regards the hospital as a vital community resource.

TaoismSince the earliest recorded times, Chinese thought has been characterized by an awareness of man’s close relationship with nature and the universe. Two basic distinctions in nature are symbolized by the Yin and Yang (sun and moon, heaven and earth, dark and light, chaos and order, etc.) Taoism sees balance as the basic characteristic underlying these distinctions.

Traditional Chinese medicine includes herbal treatments, diet therapy, use of animal secretions and organs, and folk methods. Chinese women, because they are modest about their bodies, believe in proactive healthcare. At the end of life on earth, Chinese perceive death as natural, an extension of life.

BHS Employee Leadership Education

Program Graduates First Group

The Employee Leadership Initiative (ELI) celebrated its first graduating

class with a recognition ceremony on June 20th. ELI is a selective-enrollment cohort program for non-managerial staff to explore the roles and responsibilities of managers.

“Participants were selected through an application process in conjunction with senior management sponsorship,” said Matthew Painter, BHS Director of Leadership Development. “The ELI program is designed for outstanding employees interested in a management career to promote leadership thinking, increase exposure to the skills and expectations of good managers and help determine if participants would be interested in pursuing a management career.”

The program is administered annually each spring and is held on five days over a five-month period. ELI includes career development, strengths assessment, shadowing and a wide range of management-related seminars. More information regarding the Employee Leadership Initiative can be found on the employee web portal under Departments, Institute for Organizational Learning, and Employee Leadership Initiative.

The first class of graduates posed with program leaders, from left to right: Pamela Monterosso, CPhT, Employee Pharmacy; Jennifer Steinman, RN Case Manager; Matthew Painter, Director of Leadership Development; Debbie Phelps, Dietary Aide; Jason Reynolds, EVS Team Leader; Judybeth Crowell, RN, BSN, CRNI, IV Therapy; Brooke Bencivenga, Employment Specialist, Human Resources; Sharon Greb, Senior Staff Accountant; John McClean, Client Liaison, Occupational Health; Paulette Pontier, Cardiac Rehabilitation Coordinator at Fairview; Stacy Hebb, Molecular Department Supervisor, Laboratory; Donna Kaley, Pre-op Nurse Clinical Coordinator; Alexis Montgomery, RN Clinical Educator; and Arthur Milano, Vice President of Human Resources. Dave Messing, RN is a graduate who was unable to attend the ceremony.

United Way CornerDid You Know…

Alcohol, drug use and teen pregnancy increase the high school dropout rate? That’s why Berkshire United Way is encouraging youth to make healthy decisions to ensure high school graduation. By doing so, we have seen results.

Since 2006, 8th grade 30-day marijuana use has declined 43% and 8th grade 30-day alcohol use declined 50%. And, teen birth rates are also declining. Since 2009, there has been a 52% reduction in the countywide teen birth rate. When we all work together to improve the quality of life in Berkshire County, we see meaningful results and get things done.

Consider donating today – your community depends on it! Visit the BHS United Way portal page or contact your BHS United Way Co-Chairs ([email protected] or [email protected]) to learn more.

Diversity Includes YouFocus on: The 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act

Fifty years ago it was still legal to discriminate on the basis of sex, color, race and national origin when hiring someone or refusing service in a public accommodation. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 changed that: women were no longer restricted to working only “pink collar” jobs, such as nursing, holding secretarial positions, or as elementary school teachers. People who belonged to a minority group had the ability to apply for jobs other than the often dangerous and dreadful jobs that they were expected to hold before.

The Civil Rights Act was the first step in radical social change, but most people are unaware that while it banned discrimination and segregation, it did not grant much authority to adequately enforce the new laws. Also, it did not explicitly define a “private” institution and therefore created a loophole for owners of private institutions. However, while the act may not have been well-enforced when it was first signed into law, it is very much so enforced today.

President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act in 1964 with Congressional leaders and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. in attendance.

BMC Joins Get With The Guidelines–AFIB Program

Berkshire Medical Center has joined the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–AFIB, a quality improvement program created to help hospital teams consistently provide the latest guideline-

based treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation, or AF, is a quivering or irregular heartbeat affecting more than 2.7 million Americans, and accounts for about one-third of hospitalizations for cardiac rhythm disturbance. People with AF are five times more likely to suffer a stroke and can develop blood clots, heart failure and other complications.

The American Heart Association’s GWTG–AFIB was developed to help healthcare professionals utilize a quality improvement blueprint for how best to care for AF patients using the most up-to-date research-based guidelines.

As a GWTG–AFIB participating hospital, BMC is developing a comprehensive system for providing rapid diagnosis and treatment of AF patients that includes appropriate use of safe anticoagulants to prevent stroke and heart-rate controlling medications to prevent heart failure.

BMC is also increasing its efforts to identify those patients who have AF, using GWTG-AFIB protocols for treatment, monitoring tools, and patient education. Through GWTG–AFIB, the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association provides BMC training in the program’s patient management tool and the opportunity to track performance against the guidelines and national benchmarks.

“Berkshire Medical Center is dedicated to helping our patients with atrial fibrillation have the best possible outcomes, and implementing the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-AFIB program will help us accomplish this by making it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis,” said Gray Ellrodt, MD, Chief Quality Officer.

Chaplain’s Corner

“All nurses and aides on the floor, everyone was great, an excellent team.” – Comment from a BMC 2 South patient

“I have never had an unpleasant visit. Staff makes it feel more like family than healthcare.” – Comment from a BMC Radiation Oncology patient

“It is hard to imagine how the entire experience could have been any more pleasant.” – Comment from a Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery patient

“I’ve been in the Emergency Department twice and they have been wonderful. I was also there for cataract surgery, a nuclear stress test and cardiovascular therapy. Thank you, Fairview.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“Excellent care. As I had to have blood transfusions, I was reassured by the diligence of accuracy/match for appropriate blood, as well as the monitoring procedures throughout my time receiving transfusions and afterwards. Thank you, BMC. Especially useful was the discharge information, including CT results, hemoglobin counts and paperwork I could reread myself as well as share with my primary doctor.” – Comment from a BMC 5 South patient

“We felt very much at home and laughed about our 5-star hotel experience. Thank you, mother baby unit for a beautiful experience for the birth of our daughter.” – Comment from a BMC Mother Baby Unit patient

“I had so much fun that I was reluctant to leave. What a competent and friendly group of caregivers.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“I was very sick, and most of the time very medicated. But, what I was very aware of was the kindness that was incorporated in every aspect of my care; from the highest level doctor, to all of the nurses, to the food service attendant. The kindness that was shown to me made a big impact to me and my recovery. Thank you.” – Comment from a BMC Oncology patient

“My five day stay was good. The physicians were attentive and explained things well to me. The nursing staff was caring, and all personnel I had contact with were polite and caring.” – Comment from a BMC Telemetry Unit patient

“My phlebotomist was fantastic. Very personable and very professional.” – Comment from a BHS Laboratory Services patient

“This was my first colonoscopy and I was dreading it. Your staff made me so comfortable and was so personable. I was very relaxed going into the procedure. Not the horror story I imagined it would be. Very good experience.” – Comment from a Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery Endoscopy patient

Paying Rent for Living By Sister Colette Hanlon, SC, BMC Chaplain

Shirley Chisholm once described service as, “The rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time.”

Have you ever thought about your volunteer activities, as well as your job responsibilities, as something you do, not just for money and benefits? Has it occurred to you that the service we offer to individuals, our neighborhoods, our employers and our faith communities is part of our “rent” as humans?

It is so easy to forget that we celebrate Independence Day and other national holidays because we deeply acknowledge the gifts we have as Americans and people of faith. It is a privilege to be able to work, to worship, to speak on issues of importance to us. People in other lands do not always enjoy these privileges we often take for granted. That is why our ancestors fled to this country and why so many families still look to us for welcome and freedom, especially those fleeing from violence and oppression in their homelands.

Maybe thinking about our service as rent will help us to work to enable all of God’s children on this earth to enjoy similar freedoms and opportunities.
