Of note...on a normal basis we would be closed on a Monday, however, in view of the fact that July
4th falls on a Tuesday this year, we will not be closed on Monday, July 3rd. All facilities are open
and we look forward to seeing you at the Club on Monday!
Cart Path Project Update: Work will begin earlier than previously noted, as this project will now
start on July 5th. We are hopeful to have all work (Holes 1-9 & 18) completed within 30 days.
The latest information re: Clubhouse Carpeting indicates that the carpeting will be delivered
towards the end of August. This is a very busy time of year and we will have to carefully plan the
carpet removal and installation schedule. We will keep you posted.
It has always been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and this certainly is the case
concerning Scott Thomsen’s July newsletter article...just photos. We have been receiving golf
course equipment pieces for the last 30+ days and Scott is thrilled beyond words. Take a look!
Please note that the “Hole-In-One Policy” has been revised as follows.
IT SHALL BE POLICY to issue one (1) complimentary beverage per member present, when a member Hole-In-One is achieved. Distribution of Hole-In-One beverages shall begin on the day of achievement, and shall continue until the close of business on that day.
Hole-In-One beverages shall consist of Soda, Juice, Iced Tea, Milk, Coffee, Domestic or Import Beer, House Wine or Well Drink. Hole-In-One beverages are to be consumed in the clubhouse only. Rain Checks or Drink Tokens will not be issued. Each time a Hole-In-One is achieved, a $2.00 “HIO” fee shall be charged to each membership account. Additionally, a $50 Golf Shop merchandise credit shall be issued to the maker of the Hole-In-One for his/her accomplishment.
[07/01/2017]
Our heartfelt sympathies are expressed to the Jeff Monson family for their recent loss.
Patricia will be dearly missed!

"Best in Class"
Following our last Board meeting I had a chance to chat with Dale Folmar, VP of Operations for our partner,
CBIGG. Dale has recently appointed primary liaison to Berkeley Country Club and is the process of coming
up to speed with the club and our needs. During the course of conversation, I asked Dale for his vision for
the club. Without hesitation he replied "to be the Best in Class".
How then do we become "the Best"? Experience tells us that being "best" is achieved by getting
incrementally "better" every day. The challenge for CBIGG, the management team and the Board, becomes
one of critical self-assessment. What does "better" look like? Where are we falling short? What amenities
and service levels require the most urgent attention?. There needs to be a concerted effort to identify and
improve every facet of the club's operations from accounting to member food and beverage service and
everything in between.
Next time you are up at the club, take a fresh look around. Put yourself in the mind set of someone
experiencing the club for the first time. What's it like driving up Cutting, going through the gates, parking,
entering the pro shop, the clubhouse, the locker rooms, the dining and golfing experience, the 9 Down Cafe,
coming off the course and on to the 19th hole? Is it a cohesive, welcoming and quality experience?
The ultimate judge of our success or failure in this regard will be the collective voice of the membership.
We want to hear from you on where we need to improve (and what we are doing right!). In addition to your
emails, we will be setting up a Suggestion Box in the Clubhouse if you prefer to simply jot down your
comments.
In prior FORE articles I have spoken to the need for increased member participation in the club's
governance. The response has been encouraging, in particular that of many of our key Junior Executive and
"younger" non-equity members. They are the future of Berkeley Country Club and their participation will
become increasingly critical as the current leadership of, shall we say, more "seasoned" members begins to
step aside.
It was also gratifying, but not surprising, to learn that the younger members share many of the common
values we have long espoused at the club; respect for the game, the course, the staff, and fellow members, as
well as for the traditions and customs that make the club a haven from the stress and dissonance of the
workaday world. In short, generational differences aside, they "get it" when it comes to what a relaxed, yet
respectful, private club is all about. If this is any indication of the next generation of members rest assured
the club's legacy is in good hands.
Until next time, remember to fix two ball marks on every green, rake the bunkers, repair your divots………
and let's get better every day.

Happy July everyone!
The Berkeley CC Summer weather has arrived with foggy and cool mornings but as usual the fog burns off and we
have been treated to some wonderful afternoons of Golf!
June held our first Club Championship of the year and for those who have not heard our new Medal Club Champion
is Mr. Kyle Filippelli, who fought off Zak Forrest in a one-hole playoff! In our Net division, our long time Legacy
Member Mr. Ken Rosen raised the trophy after an impressive 6 shot victory. Congratulations to both and make sure
to say CONGRATS next time you see them in the grill room!
Our Men’s Match Play Club Championship is upon us as well and being held over the next 2 weekends. Sign up on
ForeTees or call us in the Golf Shop to sign up. There are 3 flights to choose from so please make sure you let us
know where you would like to play: Club Championship (gross), Senior Club Championship (Gross) or Net
Championship (Net).
Once again changes abound within our Professional Golf Staff with the departure of Sara Yarmer to a Club closer to
her home. We wish her the best of luck in all her future endeavors; we know she will be successful in all that she
takes on! And with Sara’s departure we quickly introduce 2 new Golf Professionals in Rod Ghilarducci and Jeremy
Watson. Rod will join us as our new Director of Instruction and Player Development while Jeremy will join Christian
as an Assistant Golf Professional forming in my opinion, one of the strongest Professional Staffs in our area. I hope
you will all welcome our new team members to the BCC family with open arms. I am sure you will see the
immediate improvements they both will bring to our Club! Rod’s Bio is included.

Rod Ghilarducci, PGA
Berkeley Country Club
Director of Instruction and Player Development
With over 18 years serving the golf industry, Rod has had the opportunity to work
with Private, Resort, and Public golf facilities such as Meadow Club & Pebble Beach.
Those experiences have shaped Rod's approach on the importance of providing
exceptional service to enhance the golfer's overall experience. An accomplished
player and instructor, Rod has competed in over 100 professional golf tournaments,
and worked with players of all abilities and ages to help them play better golf and
enjoy the learning process. Rod enjoys time away from the course too; an avid fan of
bay area sports, local music, Rod also stays active and has competed in numerous
triathlons as a hobby to enjoy with his wife and friends. Rod and his wife are
expecting their first child in September, and very much look forward to joining the Berkeley
Country Club family.

July is the month for heat and fireworks, and it is unfortunate that other areas of the state are experiencing the worst
part of those two. But here at Berkeley Country Club we experience the cool/breezy/foggy nature of summer…it’s a
true blessing! Just be aware that when we visit other clubs that the weather may not be so appealing – dress
appropriately for the hot weather, and stay hydrated.
We still have a lot of Senior events left in the 2017 season. Here are the dates lined up for the next 2 months:
Wed. July 5 @ Round Hill
Tue. July 11 @ Stonetree
Thu. July 13 @ Richmond (re-scheduled from earlier rain-out)
Wed. July 26 hosting Contra Costa/Oakhurst/Stonetree
Tue. Aug. 1 @ Oakhurst (afternoon date—11:30 lunch)
Tue. Aug. 8 @ Fountaingrove (7:45 breakfast; 9:00 golf)
Thu. Aug. 10 @ Claremont (afternoon date—11:30 lunch)
Thu. Aug. 17 BCC Ladies host Seniors + Breast Cancer benefit
Thu. Aug. 24 @ Moraga
Wed. Aug. 30 @ Crow Canyon
As you can see, we have a LOT of events going on, so get signed up early because there may be limits on the
numbers of players we can bring to the “away” events. Also, be aware that I CANNOT sign you up myself – you
have to do that either on-line through ForeTees, or by calling the Pro Shop.
If you are new to the Club, or are just turning 50 this year, the Senior Men’s Association is a GREAT way to meet
other members of our club as well as other private club members from around the Bay Area. In these events, you will
paired up with a host club member and other visiting club members, competing against all the other foursomes for
prizes (usually shop credits).
Most events are in the morning, but we have a couple of afternoon dates mixed into the schedule. These events
typically include breakfast, lunch, a round of golf with cart, and a chance to win prizes for a price (in the $50 range)
that is significantly less than the Guest Fee you would pay to play just a round of golf at those clubs. It’s a bargain!
All of this comes to you by simply signing up with the Pro Shop (the annual Senior dues is billed one-time through
your monthly club statement). Should you have any questions about the Senior Association, our events, or anything
at all, please ask me, Paul Weir, or George Bakkenta. We’ll be happy to talk with you about our fun organization. If
you can’t locate us, you can also ask our golf professionals.
Remember: Life is uncertain – play golf as often as possible!

Congratulations to Kyle Filippelli for winning the Men’s Club Championship. From first to third place was separated by three points. Net
Flight winners were Peter Conn, First Flight, Neville Duvall, Second Flight, Tom Travis, Third Flight, and Kenneth Rosen, Fourth Flight.
Thanks to the oversight of the newly formed Handicap Committee, we only had two players shoot under par for the two day competition.
Upcoming this month is the men’s match play tournament. Spots are still available, but this is a limited field tournament. Check with the
Pro Shop if you are interested in participating. We also have a Men’s Guest Day schedule for July 28 th. This will be a great time to
introduce your friends and others to the Newly Named Berkeley Country Club.
In August, we will be introducing a new format for a fun type tournament. More information on the exact format will be forthcoming later
this month from the Pro Shop.
It is not to early to to start thinking about a partner for the September Men's Invitational. This is a great tournament you don't want to miss.
Check Foretees for the exact dates.
As a reminder, we have three bathroom locations out on the course where one can relieve themselves. One behind the Second Tee box and
next to the fifteenth Green, another next to the fifth green and at the halfway house at the turn. If the ladies can get around this course
without stopping to water the trees...surely you men can.
Let's be more aware of the cart signs out on the course, they are put there by the Course Superintendent for a reason. If you have a physical
need to get closer with a motorized cart, see the Pro Shop prior to starting your round and they will issue you a blue flag for the cart.
Get out and enjoy the course, the weather is great.
Golf Committee Harvey Flinn
Men’s Posting Update
In May, male members posted 79% of their 1679 rounds played, which is excellent performance for a busy month of golf. Members can
post their rounds by using any of the following methods: 1) Using the My NCGA app on a smartphone or device; 2) posting using the
NCGA website from any device 3) Using the pro shop posting computer; or 4) giving their scores to the pro shop staff. Per the USGA, the
player is always responsible for their scores. Ensure you inform the pro shop of any non-postable rounds you intend to play (such as playing
6 or less holes or just practicing).

June was a great month for the Niners. We had the first of our wild and crazy summer games on June 20: Sucker in
a Bucket. There was a tie between the teams consisting of Wendy Bakkenta, Sally Haapala, Danielle
Sanchez, and Rae Ann Hines, and of Nancy Strauch, Diane Williams, Suzie Lundeen, and Eileen McDavid. Great
playing ladies! Pat Mighetto was the June Charm Champ, with a net 31! Good job, Pat! We also had a
Secret Partner Day, with Wendy Bakkenta and Suzie Lundeen carrying away that trophy.
The Nine Holer Group welcomes all women golfers to join us as our guests on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 AM.
Please arrive by 9:15, check in with the pro shop, then one of the co-captains.
There will be more fun and games throughout the summer. The Niners are especially grateful to our regular 18 holer
guests who support our prize fund with generous donations. You guys are the best!
