DUE COMPRENSORI, DUECENTO CHILOMETRI DI FELICITÀ.TWO SKI AREAS, TWO HUNDRED KILOMETRES OF HAPPINESS.Si può misurare la felicità? Via, tutto sparito. Restano solo duecento chilom-etri di piste immacolate. La misura della felicità.
Can you measure happiness? On the Bergamask mountains you can – just join all the ski runs together, one after the other. The result is a single, very long stretch that extends for more than two hundred kilometres. This is happiness to all those who at the weekend can’t wait to put on their ski boots and race down a snowy white mountain. Happiness that in the Berga-mask Orobie mountains is within easy reach. In some cases only a few dozen kilometres away and then, as if in a fairy tale, you open your doors to a world made of mountains of snow, well-kept runs and time to relax. Traffi c, chaos, noise? No more. Only two hundred kilometres of immaculate runs. The measurement of happiness.

There is a “mountain” of good reasons for choosing to spend time holidaying or relaxing in the Seriana valley. A long valley that winds its way along the Serio river, surrounded by not only spacious snow-covered fields and enchanting woods, but also surprising mountains of unrivalled beauty, which ends in the rugged Val di Scalve. There are about ten winter resorts, both large and small, that make up the enchanting Orobie skiing area. These include resorts in both the Seriana valley and Scalve valley; many kilometres of runs to practice alpine skiing and where there is also the chance to cross country ski and go off-piste. A slice of hap-piness that must be tried to be believed...

zona; copre l’arco dell’intera giornata, seppur senza danneggiare
trascorrere piacevoli giornate.

This is a very popular ski area as it is easily reached from the large
cities of Milan and Brescia (approximately an hour) and is a beauti-
ful place. The shape of the rounded mountain with its slopes of
varying gradients and the lack of vegetation means it has wide runs
of every degree of diffi culty. It is exposed to the sun the whole day
– a distinctive feature of the area – although without damaging the
conditions of the runs and offering the non-skier a chance to pass
pleasant days on the snow.

THE NATURAL NURSERY SLOPE
This is one of the most classic and enchanting winter resorts of the
province. Easily reached from all directions, it is a “paradise” for
beginners and children, and has become known as the “ski gym” of
Bergamo, but is not lacking however in demanding runs for the more
experienced. The resort is equipped with snow cannons, a kinderheim
and Ski Stadium with automatic chronometer, accessible to all, and is
the fi rst centre in Lombardy to offer ski lessons to disabled people.
cronometro automatico, accessibile a tutti.

THE SNOW PARADISE, A LITTLE FURTHER AWAY
If, after the Presolana pass, you wish to travel a bit further, you come
across Colere, positioned at the start of the Scalve valley in the shad-
ow of the north face of the Presolana mountain.
The town has a unique atmosphere due to the grandeur of the impos-
ing mountains and offers kilometres of runs covered in snow until late
in the season, because it is facing north.
The good tourist accommodation, together with the high altitude runs
(the pride and joy is the Pista Italia, famous for hosting European Cup
trials and international and national races) and the beautiful mountain
refuges (including the well-known and very popular Albani) are all
excellent credentials for a holiday of quality
fi no a tarda stagione proprio per effetto dell’esposizione a nord.

Continuing along the valley, where the mountains act as a natural di-
vide with Valtellina valley, you can fi nd a small but pleasant ski area
with several alpine ski runs and a beautiful cross-country ski track,
set between mountains that frame the picturesque village. Here the
snow remains until the end of spring, allowing enthusiasts to continue
their sporting activities late into the season.
The summer is green, a luscious green, the air is pure and the fre-
netic life of the city is far away, even though in reality, as with all the
other resorts we have mentioned, it is only just over an hour away
by car from Milan.

DESCENTS INTO HISTORY
The runs in Spiazzi di Gromo are also as good as any of the oth-
er, better known resorts. The Vodala, for example, a beautiful route
through luxuriant woods – a feature of the whole Timogno Ski Area
- is a wonderful surprise.
The resort is very near Gromo, one of the oldest villages in the Orobie
mountains, and is also equipped with a bob run for the summer.
Not to be missed is its medieval historic centre, which still today re-
members and relives the ancient tradition of sword and metal work-
ing, a long and profi table activity known throughout the world.
Enjoy the tranquillity of the forests and scenery, a characteristic feature
of the many places in this valley.

THE KINGDOM OF THE CROSS-COUNTRY SKI
In the centre of Val di Scalve, in a particularly attractive natural amphitheatre,
lies Schilpario, a point of reference for international cross-country skiing.
Schilpario has a wonderful cross-country piste: the total trail is 10 Km
and is divided into a 2 Km section for children, a 4 Km easy section, a
competitive section of 7.5 Km, while the most demanding section covers
the entire length.
Km è articolato in un tracciato fi no a 2 Km. per i bambini, facile fi no a

The plateau of Selvino and Aviatico is the perfect place for a winter holiday.
Here, in the tranquillity of the wide, open spaces, life is characterised by
alpine skiing and toboggan and sledge runs, cross-country skiing and nordic
disciplines. Mount Purito has a ski run on its slopes with programmed snow
cannons and a conveyor belt, perfect for children and beginners. There is
an open-air skating rink, in use even in summer, attracting both young and

DOVE CANDIDE OASI PUNTELLANO INDOMABILI PENDII.SNOW-WHITE OASES DOTTED OVER THE UNTAMED SLOPES.La Valle Brembana è una valle chiusa, ma è prorio quest’ambiente apparentemente ostile a renderla così affascinante e suggestiva.
Valle Brembana is a closed valley, but it is this apparently hos-tile environment that makes it so enchanting and interesting. Its harshness blends into the folds of its wild mountainsides, giving it a more spacious feel and transforming its numerous and competi-tive ski resorts into true oases. Here the rough slopes have been tamed for skiing, but without compromising their natural beauty. A really interesting and exciting mix that makes a holiday in the snow fun and unforgettable. All that remains is to discover it for yourself: Foppolo, Piazzatorre, San Simone, Carona, Valtorta Piani di Bobbio are waiting.

This is where ski-mountaineering races for the legendary Parravicini
trophy are held. Every year hundreds of athletes climb the steep slopes
with sealskin attached to the underside of their skis, applauded by the
many enthusiasts of this traditional sport.
There are plenty of other opportunities too, because Carona, the
headquarters of the event, is also a important ski resort in the Bergamo
area and belongs to the same skiing area as Foppolo, to which it is
connected by the lifts in the Carisole valley. Those who instead do not
want to go off the beaten track must be “content” with 8 runs: 1 easy,
5 medium and 2 diffi cult for a total of 22 kilometres. Snow cannons,
a skating rink near a pretty artifi cial lake and loads of sun complete
the attractions of this popular ski resort.
SCI A 360 GRADI

Come minimo tre: italiano,
A POLYGLOT RESORT
How many languages do they speak in Foppolo? At least three: Ital-
ian, Bergamask and for the last twenty years English. This resort in
the upper Brembana valley is certainly the most well-known of the
province and enjoys the greatest international fame, not only for the
size of its skiing area (47 kilometres of runs, and if we count the con-
necting runs with Carona and San Simone, this easily rises to 80), but
also because the atmosphere is one of a complete skiing experience:
There are many residences and hotels, concentrated so that they do
not invade the vast slopes on which the runs have been marked, large
parking areas, two ski schools, which have been passing on their
tradition for more than fi fty years, structures for leisure activities such as
the skating rink and numerous places to pass pleasant evenings after a
day’s skiing. Finally, the jewel in the crown – and very reassuring: 50
points for low pressure snow cannons that ensure skiing on most of the
runs even when the snow is not as good as it could be.

HERE YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND SNOW
Why do so many skiers choose San Simone? Firstly because you can
always fi nd snow. Ensuring this are not only the low pressure cannons
positioned along the Arale and Colla runs, but also a geographic set-
ting and position able to guarantee an always perfect and consistent
snow cover. In second place, but certainly not to be overlooked, is
the friendly, welcoming atmosphere at this resort which, with its fi rst
class structures concentrated in a small area, has over time become
specialized in receiving parties, groups, school pupils and children.
The lower areas have nursery slopes and equipment for even the
smallest. 30 kilometres of runs wind around the upper areas with three
challenging black pistes: the «Camoscio 1», «Sessi» and «Muri». And
what about snow boarders? In San Simone they have not been forgot-

has increasingly attracted lovers of this discipline. In other words San

FIELDS FOR SKIING
The beautiful green fi elds are one of the strong points of Piazzatorre
in both summer and winter. In summer they are the delight of walkers
and in winter they make it easier to prepare the slopes without having
any of the stones so hated by skiers. Add to this the favourable posi-
tion (to the north east) and Piazzatorre has it all. With its 44 kilometres
of runs (5 easy runs, 6 medium and 3 diffi cult), it is the perfect resort
for beginners and intermediate skiers. Snow cannons are positioned
along 9 kilometres of runs, allowing skiing even during years when
snow is scarce. The après-ski activities are also good; there is a cov-
ered artifi cial, Olympic-sized skating rink open all year on which ice
hockey tournaments are often held.
PASCOLI PER SCIARE
Prati verdi, anzi verdissimi.
tanto odiate dagli sciatori.
hockey.

TWO VALLEYS, ONLY ONE SKIPASS
Two valleys, Brembana and Valsassina, two provinces, Bergamo and
Lecco, only one ski-pass for the Valtorta-Piani di Bobbio skiing area.
This area is the only one in the Orobie mountains to have developed
on the slopes of two different valleys. It can be reached from both
Valtorta in the Bergamo area, and from Barzio, an historic skiing re-
sort in Lecco province. The two places were joined in the middle of
the eighties, when the new runs marked out from Piani di Ceresola
towards the Brembana village were connected with Bobbio, giving
skiers the fi rst intervalley resort in Lombardy. Since then this spacious
area – surrounded by an imposing range of peaks that culminate in
the unmistakeable pyramid of the Pizzo dei Tre Signori – has become
one of the most popular winter resorts of the Orobie mountains, thanks
to its beautiful runs, in particular those on the Piani di Ceresola slopes,
but thanks also to the farsighted alliance between the two valleys.

fi no a primavera inoltrata. A Zambla Alta, inoltre, funzionano anche
piste di pattinaggio su ghiaccio.
A VALLEY OPEN ALL YEAR LONG
The valley of Oltre il Colle, a natural divide between Val del Riso and Valle
Serina, is the ideal place for mountain lovers who wish to choose between the
numerous activities linked to winter and summer tourism.
Together with the runs for alpine skiing in Zambla Alta, equipped with snow
cannons, and Monte Alben, a cross-country ski piste, one of the most beautiful
and important in Lombardy is available to nordic ski enthusiasts. It runs for 15
km through woods and its sheltered position helps keep the snow in an excel-
lent state until late spring. There is also a ice stating rink in Zambla Alta.

Once upon a time, to appreciate the real winter – a winter with tons of snow and icicles - postcards were not necessary nor did you need to look at the scenery. You just closed your eyes and listened to the sound of the snow under your feet; that “crunching” sound cross-country skiers know so well. They seem to appreci-ate certain details better. There are many enthusiasts of this sport and so it is not by chance that nearly all the ski resorts in the province have a cross country track - in Piani di Bobbio, Oltre il Colle, and also in Schilpario. A sport that is the queen of winter – a winter with tons of snow, icicles and the crunching sound of snow underfoot.

Arte
A stroll through Città Alta (Bergamo upper town) is a good place
to start. It gives one an idea, in just a few minutes, of how much
Bergamo can offer in terms of history and culture. The unmistakeable
outline that everyone can see from the motorway becomes real and
takes shape in an uninterrupted series of old buildings, museums and
historical examples that make even the most well-known art cities
envious. What can we say about Piazza Vecchia for example? And
what could be more interesting than a visit to the Venetian walls in
search of the ramparts and underground passages? The next step
however must inevitably be to widen our horizons and travel up
the valleys dotted with old villages, “lose oneself” along the roads
that cross the plains flanked by castles and splendid summer resi-
dences built by aristocrats who wanted somewhere far from the city,
changing direction again, choosing this time to cross the lakes with
their banks dotted with villages, whose walls are engraved with the
DNA of fishermen. It is difficult to decide which is better: Arlecchino’s
house in Oneta or the Accademia Tadini in Lovere, or more interest-
ing: a visit to the tiny village of Cornello dei Tasso or the splendour of
the vestry in Alzano Lombardo. It is difficult to make a list of all these
wonders without running the risk of being biased. We are confronted
with a truly important heritage. The only sensible recommendation is
to discover it a bit at a time. Between one ski and another.
Art
E per fortuna ci sono an-
cora.
Abbinamenti e menu dipendono
Buon appetito.
Once upon a time there was polenta and casoncelli (a typical
Bergamask dish of stuffed pasta), and luckily they still exist. Today
however, the wine and food choice in the Bergamo area has wid-
ened considerable and a series of recipes and typical products that
previously were, unjustly, not given any consideration, can now
be found alongside dishes of a tradition par excellence. Who, for
example, does not know Strachitunt Valtaleggio, praised by the
chef Vissani as the best cheese in Italy. And how could wines, such
as the Val calepio or the moscato di Scanzo, which until a short
time ago were only drank by a few, privileged connoisseurs, not
be appreciated? Bergamask cuisine, in other words, is becoming
richer with every passing day and it would be a crime not pay
honour to it during a holiday or brief visit. There are also plenty of
other opportunities, wine and food festivals, and quality restaurants
throughout the province. The food combinations and menus obvi-
ously depend on the area: from fish at the lakes, cheese in the
mountains to cured meats in the lowlands. The choice depends on
you. Enjoy your meal!
Gastronomy
rispetto. Preferite aggiungere sport a sport?
Sport e benessere
Sport and wellnessWhat can you do after a day’s skiing? There is a wealth of choice.
Hotels are ever more frequently being equipped with beauty
farms and wellness centres. Bergamo has spas and resorts that
have been famous for centuries. The spa town of San Pellegrino
Terme, at the start of the Brembana valley, is the most important,
where signs of the Belle époque are still evident in the many Art
Nouveau buildings. The spa building is still very popular thanks
to the therapeutic properties of its waters, while a walk along the
banks of the river Brembo is a pleasure which alone makes a visit
to this area worth while. Otherwise, if you do not want to travel
too far from the ski pistes, you can visit Sant’Omobono Terme in
Valle Imagna, another prestigious spa town. If you prefer to add
sport to sport after a day’s skiing, there is plenty of choice and
each place offers a fun activity – the bob run in Castione, for
example – to end the day in the best possible way.
