Dear Parents,

October was the month of Thanksgiving and we would like to take a moment to say thank you to

our students who have had a fantastic start to our school year; staff for all that they do to make

Benson a great place to learn and play; and the parents for giving us the privilege of working

with your children each day. We would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our

custodians, Ms. Droski, Ms. Mero and Mr. Vachon. We appreciate all they do to make our

school clean and safe for us.

At Benson School we believe that educating children is a partnership between parents and

teachers. At school, we are responsible for organizing the day with a balance of structuredlearning, guided and independent practice and ongoing assessment to ensure every child’s needs

are being met. As parents and caregivers, your responsibility lies in encouraging your children to

always put forth their best effort and supporting them by providing a structure for studying for

tests, completing homework assignments and projects. When the school and the home work

together, children are truly the beneficiaries.

On November 7th, your child will be receiving a progress report. On Thursday, November

11th from 4:00 to 6:00, we will be holding Parent/Teacher interviews. This is an excellent

opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss your child's strengths and areas

of concern. Please call the school to schedule your appointment(s) as soon as possible. We look

forward to the opportunity to discuss your child's progress with you.

The boy’s soccer team had an excellent season this year. Theyshowed great teamwork and support for each other which lead to a 5win regular season. At the district tournament the boys represented

Benson very well. They won their first game, defeating Central 2-1 andmoved on to round 2. The team put up a great fight against a well

rested Southwood team, but were defeated 2-1. Thanks for a greatseason boys. Special thanks go out to Matt D, Jared H and Brandon K

for 3 solid years on the soccer  team. Good luck. Mr. Kennedy

On Thursday, October 28, Benson

students were treated to apresentation by Essex-Windsor SolidWaste Authority representative,Heather Taylor. Ms. Taylor explainedthe importance of reducing waste, reusing precious resources, and ofcourse, recycling. She showed chillingstatistics of the fate of most paper, water bottles, and cans. Only 15% ofplastic bottles end up being properlyrecycled, while the other 85% end upin landfills for 100's of years. Did youknow that recycling one pop can can

save enough electricity to run your TVfor 4 hours or one lightbulb for 20hours?

She let all of us know that there is hopefor a cleaner, better planet. One way isto start small. We are asking that fromnow on, your child brings his or herdrink in a reusable container. If notreusable, at least use a recyclable juicebox. This would tremendously lower theamount of garbage collected at Bensonand think of the money you could save.Last year we earned the Bronze Eco-School Award and this year we aregoing for the gold! Let's all do ourpart!

Each day, with the assistance of dedicated volunteer staff, Mrs. Lane and Ms. Landry, Bensonstudents receive a healthy snack during our morning nutrition break. This program has been a great

success and students have been commenting on how much they enjoy the fresh fruits andvegetables. Parents are still encouraged to send snacks with their children to ensure that tummiesdon’t grumble, but this new program at Benson has truly helped to improve our children’s nutritionDonations of funds or healthy foods are always welcome. See Mrs. Muzzin if you are interested indonating to this program.Mrs. Muzzin
