Before becoming Prime Minister of Canada (1930 to 1935), Richard Bedford Bennett practised law in Calgary starting in 1897. A skilled barrister with a quick and sharp mind, and a quicker, sharper tongue, R.B. was also a successful businessman and corporate director. He imparted to our firm a dedication to serve our clients, the law and Canada without compromise.

Mac Jones articled at Bennett Jones in 1939 before joining the Navy to serve in the Second World War and returning as an associate following active service. Mac ingrained in the firm his business acumen, commitment to tending to clients, and maxim, “get the deal done”. His mentorship has helped to shape the careers of numerous corporate lawyers in our firm and the Canadian energy industry as a whole. In 2010, Mac became the first Law Society of Alberta member to reach 70 years of service.

With just 29 lawyers in 2000, the office has more than 140 lawyers today, mostly the result of a steady stream of high-profile partners attracted from other firms to the Bennett Jones culture. Climate Change & Emissions Trading: Recognized as a leader in providing climate change advice, we have extensive experience assisting clients with voluntary and compliance-driven carbon trading, carbon finance and renewable energy projects and financing, projects which reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and programs aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. We also advise on climate change risk and opportunity management, and regulatory compliance.
