Harrison’s previous Job

• Was a lawyer from Indiana when Civil War broke out.

• Served as Brigadier General for the US Army.

Governor Attempt

• After civil war lost governor election for Indiana in 1876.

• Only lost by 5000 votes out of the possible 434000.

US Senate

• Won election in 1879 and served until 1887

• He did not make a great impact to the US Senate mainly just voting like the other Republicans.

Presidential Nomination

• 1888 Republican nomination deadlocked between:– John Sherman- Ohio– Walter Gresham-Indiana – Benjamin Harrison- Indiana

Democrats Convention

• The Democrats had Incumbent president Grover Cleveland from New York

Campaign

• Harrison campaigned little because Cleveland had fought against the electorate in his first term.

Front Porch campaign

• Mainly speaking to groups that came calling to him at his house in Indianapolis

Presidential battle

• Harrison lost the Popular vote to Cleveland.

• Won key states of Indiana and New York to win the electoral college.

By the Numbers

• Lost pop. Vote by 100,000.

• Electoral college he won by 233 to 168.
