FATIMA MESSAGES STILL REVELANT….

100 Years ago, precisely on Sunday afternoon, May 13th 1917, The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God appeared to the three poor shepherd children- Lucia dos Santos,10yrs, and her two cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, 9 and 7 respectively, in a field as they were shepherding their parents’ flock in Fatima, Portugal. The Blessed Mother appeared as ‘a lady dressed all in white, more brilliant than the sun’ on top of a small tree in an open field called the Cova de Iria (The Cove of Irene) in the small, peaceful and faithful town of Fatima, and she asked that the children come back to the same spot on the 13th of the next month. She brought with her requests for the recitation of the rosary, for sacrifices on the behalf of sinners, and a secret regarding the fate of the world. Francisco and Jacinta were canonized on May 13th this year by Pope Francis at Fatima. The Mother of Jesus kept her promise of appearing to the three shepherds on the 13th of every month for the next five months. On the fourth apparition on August 13, the three children were not there. Due to anti- Catholic sentiment still prevalent in the country, Arthur Santos, an apostate Catholic and high mason who was the local mayor did everything to stop the children. The mayor abducted them and attempted to force them to reveal the secret of the July 13 appari-tion. Despite bribes, threats of death by burning oil and threatening to lock them in a cell with criminals, the children never recanted their story. Because of the mayor’s actions, the children were not there on August 13. Our lady appeared though because it was reported that ‘at Cova de Iria, thunder, followed by lighting was heard at the usual time. The spectators noticed a small white cloud that hovered over the holm oak for few minutes. Phenomena of coloration were ob-served on the faces of the people, the clothing, the trees, and the ground’. As God’s way of think-ing is extremely different from man’s way of thinking, Our Lady appeared briefly to the three young shepherds on August 19, at Valinhos, repeating her request to pray the rosary daily for the reparation of sins. The final apparition on October 13 came with miracles as she promised – miracle of the sun, healing of the sick, etc. As we mark the centenary anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, described as the ‘gold standard of apparitions’ it is very necessary and urgent for all to continue to embrace with deep faith the messages of Fatima. Though it’s been 100 years the messages of Fatima are very relevant in 2017 as they were in 1917. According to a miracle researcher Michael O’Niel, ‘the essence of the message is a call to conversion, and that’s something that’s as important in our life in modern times as it was when Mary appeared in 1917. I think this 100 years anniversary is a great opportunity for us to revisit the devotion and to re-incorporate it into our lives today’. It is indeed a great opportunity to revisit and pay attention to what she called us to do which she

repeated in almost all the apparitions- PRAY THE ROSARY DAILY. Let us resolve and strive as sons and daughter of Mary to devote time to daily recitation of the rosary and meditate on the mysteries for peace in our lives, homes and the world; for conversion and reparation of sins especially the sins of indifference that is eating deep into the society and spreading like a wild fire in our time.

The church designates the months of May and October as special months for Blessed Virgin Mary. These are months during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and they are months in which a greater abundance of God’s merciful gifts come down to us from our Mother’s throne. But our devotion to the Mother of God, the queen of heaven and earth should not be restricted to these months only, rather it should be a daily devotion. St. Louis de Montfort said that ‘true devotion to Mary is interior, tender and holy… True devotion to Our Lady is holy; that is to say, it leads the soul to avoid sin, and to imitate in the Blessed Virgin particularly her profound humility, her lively faith, her continual prayer, her universal mortification, her divine purity, her ardent charity, her heroic patience, her angelical sweetness, her divine wisdom’. And to those who pledge an unwavering loyalty to Jesus and tend to relegate the Mother of Jesus Christ to the background or have no devotion to her, kindly be reminded- NO MARY, NO JESUS. Jesus & Mary are inseparable. May the Mother of God, Mother of mercy, comforter of the afflicted, refuge of sinners, and Saints Francisco and Jacinta continue to intercede for us. Amen.

Book Review: “The Lamb's Supper’

I enjoy listening to Scott Hahn on EWTN. He is a Catholic convert and in my opinion converts seem to know a lot more about our faith compared to cradle Catholics. At Christmas all of the parishioners were given a wonderful book written by Scott Hahn titled , The Lamb's Supper. I started reading it during adoration and found it to be very informative about the Mass and the book of Revelations. The book traces the Mass from the Jewish Passover, to the Apostolic Tradition by Hippolytus to the sacrifice of the Mass as we know today. Scott reminds us that the liturgy engages the whole person-body, mind and spirit. He further explains the parts of the Mass and that the Holy Eucharist wipes our venial sins away. I am currently reading the in depth explanation of Revelation. I have been taking my time reading it and have reread several parts in order to meditate on them. It is an easy read, but so rich. I thank the parish for this rich gift and wish happy reading to all.

A Unique Collaborative Effort Between Two

Parishes

This year’s seventh grade service project has truly been a collaborative effort

between two parishes (St. Philip Benizi and St. John the Apostle) and two St. John the Apostle classes. Making forty

nutritious sack lunches on the first Friday of every month for The Father’s Heart Ministry, in Oregon City, has truly

fostered the development of servants’ hearts in the SJA students as well as

donors from St. Philip Benizi and St. John the Apostle parishes.

About a week earlier, preschoolers and seventh graders meet in the preschool room to create lovely,

welcoming cards for inclusion in the sack lunches. Using food and

supplies from St. Philip Benizi ‘s Helping Hands and SJA’s St. Vincent de Paul food pantries, as well as

fresh fruit and delicious homemade baked items brought in by students,

the seventh graders enthusiastically first create an assembly line of items to be included in the sack lunches.

Excitement is palpable as the preschoolers are welcomed, buddied up with an eager seventh grader, and

assembling the sack lunches begins.

Youth Group

The 2016/17 school year for Religious Education has come to an end, but the youth group is just getting started. The kids have worked very hard with their fundraising efforts and have raised to needed amount of money for the 12 of us to attend Steubenville OC. We will be leaving on July 6th and will return on July 11th with a refreshed sense of our faith. Many of the students that will be attending this year have never been to a Steubenville conference and are ready for the experience. Out of the 12 of us that will be attending...only 4 of us have attended before. Please pray for a safe and refreshing experience for us. One of the fundraisers we did was the Taco Night/Auction on May 20th. We had amazing food. Thank you to Don Pepe's on Main Street for the yummy refried beans and cheese. Thank you to Mazatlan on Beavercreek Rd. for the delicious rice. Thank you also to El Papalote on Molalla Ave for the amazing taco tortillas, they were quite tasty. Thank you also to Todd Schnoor

for cooking the hamburger and chicken...there were rave reviews. We actually had so much food that we were able to sell some on Sunday after the 8am mass. There were some fun Auction items like Shakespeare tickets, a BBQ basket, Summertime Family Fun baskets, Handpainted Peace Poles, Gardening Basket, Car Wash Kit, Home Spa Basket, Handmade Pillowcases w/pillows..the list goes on and on. If you weren't able you attend this year, please plan on coming next year to support our youth program and to have fun with our parish community. Katy Schnoor Youth Minister

Tornado hits Salisa Bana School in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Only a few bruises and scratches to the 280 students, teachers, other staff and volunteers who manage the 35+ acres of school and grounds. God was truly watching over the most precious part of our

school.

Now Construction Repairs at Salisa Bana School have Begun! On May 15th we sent the first half of our $30,000 repair cost goal to Salisa Bana school to start the repair process after a tornado struck the school in late March. We are so thankful for the

awesome response we have received from our donors and partner families. Soon new roofs will be placed on 3 school building and the other buildings to replace the ones destroyed by the tornado. Once the outside of the buildings are repaired the work of refinishing the inside starts. Solar panels that were destroyed in the tornado have been purchased and will be installed soon to provide electricity for classrooms, other buildings and to provide most need electricity to run the pump for our new well that provides for the first time clean, fresh, life saving water.

Many of the school desks were destroyed and we will have to build new ones at a cost of $25 each. We will need a total of 75-100 desk to replace the

destroyed ones. Here are the first photos of the repairs: The process has begun but we still need help. We have raised just half of our goal and need another $15,000 in order to bring the school back to full working order. Please consider giving to help us bring positive and life changing education back to the students at Salisa Bana School. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LOVED ONE??

That was our question about our son from the time he was 3 until the answer came at age 21. He was withdrawn from family and others, always sad, succeeded at nothing. School was misery for him and after barely graduating, he went through a series of jobs, lasting only a week or two at any of them. All those years, we sought advice and help from his teachers and anyone else we could find. No answers. Finally, the answer came as he was dropped from Job Corps after only 3 days. The youth agency recognized his woes as symptoms of mental illness and directed us to get help at Clackamas County Mental Health. That was 32 years ago and his improvement has been sporadic with highs and lows, but at least he, and his family, now knows that he has a treatable, physical disorder. He is in treatment, has a safe living environment and is finding some peace in his life. Together we have grown to a point of acceptance and mutual support. My son’s illness led me to the then fledgling National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for support and education. This involvement has developed into a second career of helping other families and individuals to understand what is happening to them and their loved one and to obtain medical help and peer support. It has been very rewarding to teach coping classes and to assist people in recovery to do outreach presentations in the community and in school health classes about their experiences. One in five families has a member with mental health issues, yet only one in three of them ever recognize that fact and seek help. Most just endure a lifetime of suffering, never knowing it is not their fault or even what is going on. Thankfully, many famous people who have been treated successfully for mental disorders are going public with their experiences. We show pictures of them (including many pop singers, President Kennedy, Winston Churchill, etc.) to students and urge them to get beyond the stigma and learn to recognize the warning signs. We let them know that help is available, treatment works and stigma is inappropriate. Still, many families stay mired in the “hope against hope” that their loved one will miraculously recover without any medical intervention or that it is not mental illness. This attitude only prolongs the agony, delays recovery, and sometimes ends tragically. If someone in your family is failing to thrive and seems very unhappy, check over the warning sign list. If you see two or more which describe that person, take action. Educate yourself about mental health issues and urge that person to seek medical advice. WARNING SIGNS

• Feeling sad or withdrawn for more than 2 weeks • Trying to harm or kill oneself or making plans to do so • Severe out-of-control, risk-taking behaviors that can cause harm to self or others Sudden overwhelming fear for no reason, sometimes with a racing heart, physical discomfort or fast breathing • Throwing up, using laxatives or not eating to lose weight; significant weight loss or gain • Seeing, hearing or believing things that are not real • Repeated use of drugs or alcohol • Drastic changes in mood, behavior, personality or sleeping habits Extreme difficulty concentrating or staying still that puts a person in physical danger or causes school failure Intense worries or fears that get in the way of daily activities

becomes the mission of St. Philip Benizi parish, to proclaim the

kingdom of God, to build up the parish community as a witness of

God’s love and care for the world, to be the invitation to become what

God has called us to be.

This mission is best accomplished through individuals working with

others who accept the same purpose. This forms a parish community

and the work achieved with the guidance of the Spirit is called ministry.

In this way we are directed to work toward God’s purpose of “wanting

all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.”

Since the inception of St Philip Benizi, volunteers have been a mainstay

of the smooth functioning of the parish as we strive to fulfill the

St. Philip Benizi Mission Statement.

You are the hands that bring the body of Christ to those who hunger

for the Bread of Life. You are the catechists who I introduce the great

truths of our faith to our youth and others. You are the voices that

proclaim God’s Word.
