entirely new as all four starters graduated, al-though Wyvell saw ac-tion in five games at first base and extensive time at the position during the Legion season. Jamison Schuh was The Birds’ starting short-stop during the summer and those two will be the anchors to the infield. “We are really young,” Hoemke said of his infield, who will have three-fourths of his infield begin the season with no varsity experience. With Wyvell ex-pected to be the team’s cleanup hitter, the re-mainder of the infield will have to be table setters offen-sively. “Tyler makes consistent contact and can drive the ball. Defensively, he can really pick the ball and, with his size, it’s hard to overthrow him. “Jamison makes great contact at the plate,” Hoemke said of the junior who is expected to hold down the starting spot at second base. “He makes great contract and sprays the ball around.” Drees, who also saw time with The Birds last summer and Brooks battled for starting shortstop duties and the duo, when not on the mound, will hold down the left side of the infield. The duo, along with Wyvell, will give BSM one of the biggest infields in high school baseball, as their average height is 6-3. Vecere, who has seen action at third base, along with

The 2015 season brings Benilde-St. Margaret’s to a new conference and a lot of new faces to the Red Knight varsity baseball team. With the return of just five players, BSM head coach Greg Hoemke has his work cut out for him in finding out who the pieces to the puzzle that is his squad fit together.

PITCHERS “This is one of the few spots where we return players with any experience,” Hoemke said and three of his five returning players made contributions on the mounds last season. Senior co-captains, Tyler Wyvell, John Vecere and Connor Day should anchor the starting spots in the rota-tion according to Hoemke. “If they can command their pitches, they should give us a chance to win,” he said. Wyvell led the staff last season with a 1.03 earned run average, while going 4-1 with a save. Vecere made a team-high eight appearances out of the bullpen while Day won his lone start of the season and struck out 12 in 12 innings of work while posting a 2.33 ERA. Senior Stephen Bliss proved, during the summer, to be a reliable relief pitcher for The Birds and, with his fastball is in the low 80s this spring with good movement, Hoemke is looking for him to close out some games. Juniors Trebor Eberle and Mitch Melquist are expected to contribute out of the bullpen. “They won’t overpower many teams,” Hoemke said. “They can get hitters out when they throw strikes.” Sophomores Derek Drees, Matt Brooks and Alex Hou-lihan will also see spot duty. Hoemke stated all possess good velocity and have shown tremendous potential.

CATCHERS Riley Simonetti will handle the bulk of the catching du-ties in 2015 in his third season with the Red Knights. Simonetti’s bat is his biggest asset as the junior has hit

.308 in his first two var-sity seasons, primarily as a pinch and designated hitter.

Newcomers Nick Gionet, who spent time last summer player for the Chester Bird Legion team, and Dylan Hewitt will provide the backup behind the plate.

While we have little experience at this posi-tion, all have looked good early, particu-larly throwing the ball,” Hoemke said.

INFIELD The Red Knights’ starting infield will be

Hewitt, who also plays third, and Gionet, a sec-ond baseman, will see playing time as well.

OUTFIELD Co-captain Riley Crane returns after see-ing action in 23 games last season, 20 in the outfield. He’ll moved from left field to center field this season, where he saw extensive playing time for Chester Bird last summer. Hoemke feels the team’s outfield defense will be a strength as speed, which has always

been on of the team’s assets in the outfield, will be avail-able again. Crane has shown his ability to run and that he has a strong arm. Five others will battle for time in the outfield. Eberle, Alex Houlihan, Cole Jacobs, Jack Qualen and Will Whit-more are expected to see time in the outfield this season. “They’re all capable players,” Hoemke said. “I have confidence that they can all get the job done when called upon.”

After leading the Red Knights to the NSC title and the top seed in the Section 6AAA playoffs in 2012, Hoemke served as a

coach in the Lions All-Star Game. He took over the reigns of the BSM program in 2008, following five seasons as the Red Knights’ assistant coach, and promptly won the first of his three NSC crowns. In seven seasons under Hoemke, the Red Knights fin-ished no worse than fourth in the 11-team North Suburban, including six seasons of finishing either first or second. In his seven seasons as head coach, Hoemke has seen 17 of his graduating players go onto play collegiate baseball at all three NCAA levels. Last season, on May 1, 2014, Hoemke recorded the 100th win of his career with an 11-0 victory over Columbia Heights. Hoemke came to BSM from St. Agnes, where he spent six seasons as the assistant baseball coach in addition to serving as an assistant football coach during his tenure there. He is a 1983 gradu-ate of St. Agnes and earned his bachelor’s degree from Minnesota in 1986. He and his wife, Jane, have two children;

Rachel, 23, a 2010 BSM graduate who played varsity soft-ball and tennis; and Marshall, a 2014 BSM alum, who was a member of the Red Knights’ varsity baseball and football teams, and currently attends the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

A graduate of Edison High School in Minneapolis, he was a five-year varsity player for Tommies, earning all-conference honors three times and playing in the Metro All-Star game following his senior season. In 2005, Boyd began his coaching career as the head coach of the Northeast Minneapolis American Legion team. *-Metro West Conference game

Benilde-St. Margaret’s finds itself in a new conference in 2015 following the disbandment of the North Suburban Conference, of which it was a member for 10 seasons. The Red Knights join the newly-formed Metro West Conference this season along with former NSC members Robbinsdale Cooper and St. Louis Park. The other founding members of the MWC include Bloomington Jefferson, Bloomington Kennedy, Chanhassen, Chaska and Richfield.

Connor Day won his lone start of 2014 and allowed just 10 base runners in 12 innings of work.

Following seven seasons as a Major League player, Mike Mason joined the coaching ranks. He is in his 23rd season as a professional coach and, after six seasons as pitching coach with the Iowa Cubs, he takes over as the pitching coordinator for the Chicago Cubs’ organization. Previously, he was the Kansas City Royals’ minor league pitching coordinator in 2007 and served as their minor league pitching instructor for three seasons before that role. Mason split time in 2004 between his minor league instructor position and interim pitching coach for the major league club.

He spent 10 seasons as a pitching coach in the Royals minor league sys-tem for Appleton (1991-92), Memphis (1993-94), Springfield (1995), Lansing (1996-97) and Wichita (1998-99). He spent the 2000 and 2001 campaigns as the Royals minor league pitching instructor and then served as a pitching coach from 2002-03 for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA) in the Phillies organization. He resides in Chanhassen, with his wife, Terri, and has two children, Derek, who played four seasons for Concordia University in St. Paul, and Stephanie.

Pat Scanlon ‘70James Patrick Scanlon was drafted in the fifth round, 99th overall, by the Montreal Expos following his senior season at Benilde High School. He made his Major League debut on Aug. 27, 1974, and played three seasons for the Expos before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals following the 1976 season. He was then traded to the San Diego Padres in 1977 and played 47 games that year, his final season in Major League Baseball.
