Tell us a bit about yourself.I am a small business owner with an undying entrepreneurial spirit. I started my business from humble beginnings at my house in Soweto without any real support system. Fortunately, I did have a residential line. After I had toiled and struggled I was able to rent an office in the Dobsonville Shopping Centre in Soweto. The reasoning behind that was that I needed to prove that there can be a corporate Soweto. I needed to prove that professionalism does not come from Town to Soweto – in fact – the other way around is true. We have now been in the business of recruitment, selection and placement of staff for 18 years.

What is it that you do, or what is your business? We started out as a recruitment company, but we have now added a Training and Development arm to the business, as well as an outsourced call centre, where we train unemployed matriculants and house them in our call centre.

What inspired you to do what you do? To be physically in a position to create jobs in order to alleviate the current scourge of unemployment.

What are some of the challenges you have faced? The very first almost insurmountable obstacle was a lack of capital and lack of resources that one needs to start a business.

How did you overcome these challenges? With that one line I had, I got calling… that is the only reason my business survived.

How has it been having handle your ICT?Having as a service provider for our internet connectivity and fixed lines has eased off the pressure of worrying during downtime. ’s Telephone Management System also assists with tracking the employees who abuse the phones.

Why is it important to have the solutions to the above problems? As a small business owner you really need to be abreast with the times to have any chance in business. is my business solutions architect with years of experience, credibility and a good reputation, so it is easy to just give it all over to them.

Why should other business people and entrepreneurs consider ?In South Africa, is connectivity.

What advice do you have for other business people and entrepreneurs?Do not go into business expecting to quickly make money and tremendous traction with clients, especially if you are not from the so-called ‘connected people’! Go in with a long-term plan and a great passion for what you have as the business of your choice. Business is a long-term marriage.

What are your plans and goals for the future? Our plan, and wish, is to grow all the arms of our business, including extending our Call Centre in Debt Collection so that we can create a number of sustainable jobs.

The culprit behind most would-be entrepreneurs giving up on their dreams is the fear relating to finance or, more accurately, the lack thereof. Even at a potential entrepreneur’s most motivated of times, such as when he is just a few steps away from the boss’s office about to hand in his resignation and take that daring plunge, that pushy little voice inside his head will almost certainly be taunting him with the same persistent questions.

“Will I be able to access enough capital to successfully fund my venture?” “How will I even go about doing this?”

Yes, capital is a BIG consideration when starting a business – it will always be at the forefront of everything you do and will always have a gargantuan impact on every decision that you make. The good news is that, as long as you know where to look, obtaining access to start-up capital needn’t be as daunting a task as you might expect. Here are a few options to keep in mind.

Government funding Our country boasts a multitude of government funding platforms geared towards helping ambitious entrepreneurs, just like you, realise their vision. The Department of Small Business Development is one such platform and is known for training hundreds of informal traders each year. You can learn more via their website: www.dsbd.gov.za.

The Small Enterprise Development Agency is another alternative, and while they don’t actively provide funding themselves, they have dedicated their expertise to helping small business owners with the processes involved in accessing funds from other sources, predominantly through providing guidance when it comes to drawing up a viable business plan. Contact them on 0860 103 703 or via [email protected].

A newer initiative, known as the Small Enterprise Finance Agency, opened its doors in 2012 and is knownfor funding both grants and loans. Much like SEDA, they are always happy to lend a hand to entrepreneurs who do not meet their criteria for grant/loan applications. If you do meet their criteria, you can apply for business finance through them online via their website, www.sefa.org.za.

LoansThere is always the option to seek out a loan from a financial institution or private enterprise. Most South African banks will be able to offer flexible repayment terms to suit your needs and preferences. However, it is important to note that obtaining a business loan isn’t easy.

You will need to present a concise and convincing business plan and let the bank know the exact amount that you would like to borrow. You will also need to ensure that your credit history is immaculate.

Government loansGovernment loans are known to come with substantially lower interest rates and longer repayment terms when compared to the loans offered by financial institutions. Small business owners may choose to apply for a government loan through the Isivande Women’s Fund (as the name suggests, female entrepreneurs only), Khula and the National Youth Development Agency. For more information, interested applicants may get in touch with the Department of Trade and Industry via their call centre on 0861 843 384.

InvestorsMuch like applying for a loan, you’ll also need to convince potential investors with the help of an impressive business plan. While ‘who you know’ could go a long way towards getting this approach right, there are many platforms out there to help you find capital in this manner. Arguably, the most popular angel investment network is that of the South African Investment Network: www.investmentnetwork.co.za.

Self-funding According to the ‘2016 State of South African Small Business’ report (as released by South African research group World Wide Worx), out of the 400 small business owners who were surveyed, 63% relied solely on their own personal savings to start their businesses. With nointerest to pay and no stressing over being indebted to your creditors, many will agree that this is the ideal wayto go! The good news is that the same business owners, 62% of them in fact, said that they required less than R100 000 to get started.

Remember… once you have successfully accessed your start-up capital, the focus will shift from getting started to actually making your business work. can help with that. Click through to www.telkom.co.za or visit your nearest store to learn more about our custom packages and solutions. We are dedicated to being your trusted ICT partner, promising accessibility, affordability and sustainability, and look forward to supporting you on your entrepreneurial journey today, tomorrow and every day thereafter.

Tell us a bit about yourself.I am the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Yourself Management, an award-winning through-the-line marketing agency, specialising in the African market. I formed the agency in 2004 with a R350 tip I earned asa waiter. Today, Yourself Management has grown into a team of over 300 employees operating throughout the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region with a Head Office in Johannesburg and regional offices in Cape Town, Durban, Namibia and Zambia.

What is it that you do, or what is your business? The business is Yourself Management, a main marketor African-focused through-the-line marketing agency. The business offers an integrated approach, where it uses below-the-line, above-the-line and digital marketing methods to reach a wide customer base and acquire market share within the African market. The business started in 2004, is 100% black owned and has a Level 1 B-BBEE score.

What inspired you to do what you do? When I started my company at the age of 19, I only wanted to survive – pay my rent, send some money to my poor home and buy clothes. Little did I know that the same company I started with a tip I got while working as a waiter would change my life, and the life of another 300 families, becoming a key player in the marketing industry. There is a Somalian proverb that goes: “Wisdom does not come overnight”, and I definitely agree with it. With 14 years of history in the business, Yourself Management has grown from being an underdog to become one of the competitors within the main or African market.

What were some of the challenges you faced? The fact that I am black and young, the business systems of our country, especially in the private sector, are not supportive. The banks are not willing to partner with one on their journey, clients (private sector) do not have confidence in you regardless of your track record, government is not supportive and one has to be politically affiliated to get their attention. The biggest challenge is sustaining the business under such factors.

How did you overcome these challenges, and how did aid in this? One has to be determined and persistent with the visionof the company. We set out a five-year strategic plan for the business, which we review every six months. This has helped us identify where there are opportunities,

and where we need to adjust the plan to sustain the business. , with its tailor-made facilities for my kind of business, has come in handy to position us accordingly in this competitive market. We use Unlimited Business, and the facility has been very handy, especially in our type of business, which is dependent on high-speed internet and voice calls.

Why is it important to have solutions to the above problems?Business is about image and ’s solutions allow small businesses to create a good image.

How has having handle your ICT helped you focus on your business?’s ICT facility is great, especially with video conferencing, which makes it easy for us to communicate with our global clients.

Why should other business people and entrepreneurs consider ? offers SMMEs an all-in-one solution, and the fact that there is dedicated personnel from their site to deal with any matters, is helpful for any business. Personalised service.

What advice do you have for other business people and entrepreneurs? Success is not an instant thing, we should be patient enough to build generational wealth and offer solutions for our economy.

What are your plans and goals for the future?I’m currently focusing on expanding the agency’s presence in Africa, which is the main reason behind the opening of the Namibian and Zambian offices, with Nigeria to follow. I see a great opportunity to leverage on the expansion of African operations. We have invested time and resources into understanding the market trends in African countries. We do this to be able to position our partners (clients) accordingly within this emerging market that is full of opportunities, especially for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), information and communicationtechnology and banking firms.

Kabelo Ncholo – CEO of Yourself Management

With 70 – 80% of all small businesses in South Africa failing within five years of opening their doors, many ambitious entrepreneurs will be wondering what the remaining 20 – 30% are doing differently. If you’re looking for a manual, you’ll be looking for a very long time. On the other hand, if you’re in search of advice in terms of how to go about sustaining your new business, read on.

That elusive ‘personal touch’Many small business owners feel it is impossible to compete with larger companies that offer the same products and services as they do.

After all, how can you possibly contend with a companythat is well-established, has an endless marketing budget and boasts the resources necessary to provide its product/service on a much larger scale? The truth of the matter is that, as a small business, while you won’t have the same level of capital to play with as these industry big-wigs, and you might not be as well known, you DO have something that they don’t. You have that elusive personal touch.

These days, everything revolves around building connections, being connected and staying connected – and yet we have never been so detached from oneanother as a result. In a society driven by monetarygain, it is difficult to come across as sincere and, as aconsumer yourself, we’re sure that you can agree thatmany of the bigger brands are failing at this, and quitemiserably so. Could this be precisely because of theirendless resources and the methods that they employto manage their large consumer base? Think about it…customer queries are answered with automatedresponses and outside help is often employed to ensurethat their Facebook response rate is kept at 100%.They have the resources necessary to automate allcommunication that exists between their brand and itsconsumers. Whereas small business owners who don’thave access to these resources are forced to be morehands-on – what they perceive to be their greatestweakness is actually their greatest strength.

While big businesses are telling their customers how much they care about their wants and needs, small businesses are walking the talk. While big businesses are pretending to be sincere, small businesses actually are.

The way in which you treat and communicate with your customers is the number one differentiator and the key to success. In a world that has become centred on deadlines, instant gratification and in-your-face marketing practices, people have never appreciated a warm smile and a kind word more than they do today.

Never remaining stagnant According to the ‘State of South African Small Business’ study conducted by Xero in partnership with World WideWorx, 67.9% of small business owners see economic volatility as the biggest challenge standing in the way of their success. Unfortunately, we have very little control over the state of the economy. However, what we can control is how we conduct ourselves within the existing economic and business environment. The key to success in most things in life is to never be satisfied with what you have, and business is no exception. This doesn’t mean being ungrateful or neglecting to acknowledge the many wonderful things that you’ve managed to achieve thus far. It means always striving for more, never allowing yourself to get comfortable, and constantly seeking improvement.

Heard about a communication skills workshop taking place in your area? Attend it! Received a negative piece of customer feedback on your Facebook page? Make the changes necessary in order to fix it and stop it from happening again! Been approached by an employee who is keen to take on more responsibility and grow in his career? Mentor him!

By taking steps to ensure regular improvement when it comes to all aspects of your business, you can always be pretty sure that you’ll remain at least one step aheadof failure.

The right ICT partnerAnother factor that can help to keep your business on the right track is finding the right ICT partner and solutions. As a leading supplier, is known for reducing the cost to communicate for all South Africans, and providing business owners with all that they need to ensure accessibility, affordability and sustainability. Nowadays, business and ICT (Information andCommunications Technology) go hand in hand. In the business world of today, being competitive means being connected. Unfortunately, according to the ‘How Technology is Reshaping South Africa’s Small Business Economy’ study, conducted by Xero in partnership with World Wide Worx, 45% of small business owners acknowledge that they could be doing more with regardto technology adoption, and a further 52% stated that they feel they are just barely keeping up. What does thismean? Hardly any SMEs feel confident in using new ICT technology to their advantage.

This is a sad state of affairs, as there are almost limitlessbenefits when it comes to fully connecting your business. We examine just a handful of them below…

Streamlined communicationTo be connected means to have the means and abilityto communicate seamlessly with all customers, suppliers and employees at any given time. The vast majority of ICT solutions have been designed to helpbusinesses achieve that goal. Streamlined communication leads to streamlined internal processes which, in turn, lead to a hearty boost in productivity which, finally, contributes to a positive transformation within the business, especially when it comes to that all-important bottom line.

Happier customersDue to the fact that ICT promises better communication, there is sure to be an increase in the number of happy customers who associate themselves with your business. ICT also means that you’ll be able to offer yourcustomers a more well-rounded experience, such as digital assistance via automated chat on your website and e-commerce options for those who would prefer to shop online.

Increased reachEven if you see your business as one that is solely dedicated to servicing your local community, ask yourself this question: How much of your local community actually knows that you exist? ICT provides you with the chance to reach a greater number of people both within your town/city and, if you offer e-commerce facilities, far and wide, too. This is becauseit makes it possible for you to draw on the power ofdigital marketing. Did you know that you can now targetyour digital marketing efforts to reach people fromspecific demographics and specific locations, makingevery cent that you put into it a cent well spent?

Enhanced insightThis goes for insight into your clients and customers and for insight into your competitors’ successes and failures. By setting up a Facebook page for your business, for example, and growing your following through your efforts, you’ll have direct access to the people responsible for making your business successful. You’ll learn more about their interests, needs and wants, as well as receive feedback regarding your products, services and the quality of your customer care. All of this information can help you to mould your establishment into more than just what you want it to be, but what your customers and clients want it to be – or, rather, what they expect it to be.

Your internet connection also affords you the opportunity to keep an eye on your competitors’ online activity. Not only will you be able to see what they are doing and how they’re doing it, you’ll also be able to use this information to brainstorm how you can do it better.

Cutting costsWith the right ICT solutions in place, a reduction in operational costs is something that is certain to happennaturally. With streamlined communication comes a lower risk of human error, and a reduction in the cost that comes with rectifying these errors. With happier customers comes an increase in loyalty and word-of-mouthadvertising, which equates to more visits to your store and more money in your pocket. With increased reach comes even more potential customers. With enhanced insight comes the chance to tailor your product/service offering to suit the needs, wants and expectations of your customers. In short, an investment in ICT almost automatically means a better financial outlook for your establishment.

From telephones, computers, servers and the internet to social media, digital advertising and content marketing, if you want to get ahead, you need to get connected.

Did you know that 41% of small businesses battle with an unreliable internet connection at work? It is ’s mission to remedy this. We are all about connecting people and businesses just like yours, providing peace of mind that once you get connected, you’ll stay connected. With a variety of affordable packages to suit the requirements of your business, we will help you to take that next step towards success, growth and expansion. Top tips for optimising tax for your business

The tax season is upon us once again. Instead of allowing it to stress you out, why not see it as an opportunity to optimise your return instead? Here are our helpful tips for getting this right:

• Start by ensuring that you are fully tax compliant. If you are not, along with incurring fines from SARS,you will also run into challenges when it comes tofinding investors, obtaining expansion capital andattracting new clients. As a rule, whenever applicable,South African businesses are liable to pay Income Tax,Value-Added Tax, Provisional Tax, Capital Gains Tax andSecondary Tax on Companies.

• Know what you are entitled to claim for. Most smallbusinesses can claim for the majority of expensesincurred through generating income for, andmaintaining, their business. This includes stationery, rent for your office/business premises, ICT services, business travel costs, inventory and subcontractors.

• Ensure that you keep an accurate record of all of yourexpenses, along with any till slips or invoices thatrelate to them. By keeping these in logical order andfiled away safely, you’ll be able to avoid the mad rushthat tax season is so well known for, as well as makecertain that your return runs as smoothly as possible.Just to be safe, you might also want to scan thesedocuments and save them on your laptop (or in theCloud) to allow for easy access in the event that any ofthe hard copies are lost.

• Keep all documents, slips and invoices for at least fiveyears before getting rid of them. This will safeguardyou should SARS ever wish to review previous taxreturns for your business.

• Investigate the correct rates of depreciation. From yourcomputers to your office’s air conditioning unit, all ofyour assets depreciate at different rates. Luckily, SARShas provided a helpful list to follow in this regard, which can be downloaded online via their website.

• Consider applying for a tax directive. If you get morethan 80% of your business from one client, you onlyhave a handful of employees and you spend a lot oftime working on one of your clients’ premises, a taxdirective is advised and will save you plenty of moneyin the long run.

• Register as a sole proprietorship or partnership to limitred tape and administrative costs. However, keep inmind that you will need to register a company if youplan on applying for a loan in the future.

• Be aware of what type of tax you are liable for. Mostsmall businesses will fall into the ‘Small BusinessCorporation’ (SBC) bracket, which offers pleasant taxsavings. In order to qualify as an SBC, you will need toturn over less than R20 million per annum.

• Find out if you qualify for Turnover Tax. Turnover Tax isaimed at micro businesses with a turnover of less thanR1 million per annum, with the goal of making it easierfor them to meet their tax obligations. Turnover Taxreplaces Income Tax, VAT, Provisional Tax, CapitalGains Tax and Dividends Tax. As of March 2012,micro businesses that are registered for Turnover Taxmay also elect to remain in the VAT system.

Ultimately, the key to a seamless, stress-free tax return lies in proper preparation and comprehension of the SARS policies, laws and procedures. If you have any queries thereof, you can contact the SARS call centre on 0800 00 7277 (in operation on weekdays between 8am and 5pm).
