2014 RECOVERY AWARD RECIPIENTSLENORE AND THE LATE HAL SCHNEIDERMAN

Fresh A.I.R. Gallery (Ar tists in Recovery) exhibits the works of individuals affected by mental illness

and/or substance abuse disorders. Through ar t, we educate the community and work to break down the

stigma of mental illness and substance abuse by bringing focus to the ar tistic vision. Fresh A.I.R. is a

program of Southeast Healthcare, a comprehensive provider of mental health, primary healthcare for the

homeless, substance abuse counseling, and homeless services. Southeast opened the Fresh A.I.R. Gallery

in 2004 to celebrate 25 years of recovery. The Gallery exists to address stigma about mental illness and

to create a venue for ar tists affected by mental illness or substance abuse disorders to display thier work.

Fresh A.I.R. Gallery is open to the public Monday thorugh Friday 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 131 N. High Street,

Columbus Ohio 43215.

ABOUT FRESH A.I.R. GALLERY

One only needs to chat with Lenore Schneiderman for a few minutes to come up with a single, descriptive

word.

Pistol.

Lenore was the opinionated, outspoken chairperson of the Human Services Depar tment at Columbus State

Community College for 25 years, from 1984 until her retirement at age 83 in 2009. During this entire time,

she served on the Southeast, Inc., Board of Directors in many roles and committees.

Even then, she didn’t want to retire. “I was in good physical condition and I liked my job,” Lenore

explained. “But, my husband Hal wanted to travel more. So, I retired so we could travel and the son of a

gun died on me two years later. I’m so pissed at him.”

Lenore had completed just one semester at Wayne University in Detroit when she and Hal married. Over

the next 15 years, she moved around the country, following Hal’s work as the director of the Jewish

Federation. She attended several colleges, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in

social work.

After Hal retired from working close to 30 years at The Ohio State University School of Social Work, he

decided to go back to school at the age of 70 and finish his law degree and become a lawyer. Hal was

also a prolific ar tist and donated his glass blown creations to the Ar t of Recovery year after year.

Lenore was the moving force behind Southeast and the Columbus State Community College par tnership

for the Community Living Specialist (CLS) cer tificate program. Students who were enrolled in the CLS

program at CSCC had to have an identified mental illness and be in recovery. To help the students,

Southeast paid for their tuition in the program. If they completed the cer tificate program, Southeast would

employ them. The program has since changed to the Peer Suppor t Cer tificate Program and has opened up

to more students.

Although retired, Lenore continues to be involved in fundraising for the Steve Wilson Scholarship Fund for

students in the Mental Health / Addiction Studies / Developmental Disabilities program at CSCC. Lenore

and Hal have two children, daughter Fern (Dennis Brown) Schneiderman and son Ian Schneiderman (Mary

Rae) and they have 2 grandchildren Meagan and Brendan Schneiderman. Lenore currently resides in

German Village and is an avid ar t collector.
