CONDITIONS AFFECT FINAL FOURS ORDERORMOND S NEAK IN !

by Jan HowardIt seems that winter has really arrived and as the grounds become heavier

and colds and `flu' take their toll, the clubs that scored early premiership pointscan begin to reap some of the benefits . It is much harder to come from "downthe list" in these conditions . Indeed in some Sections the four has taken on adecidedly settled look over the past couple of weeks, and the advent of less thanideal conditions.

Last week's "winning" (or is it non-losing?) margins ranged from 0 to 210points with two "draws" being recorded - one in D Section, the other in JuniorSection 3 - St. Bernard's (A) in Junior Section 1 registering a thirty-five goalwin over Ivanhoe .

Another comfortable win was recordedby University Blues over their co-students the Blacks in A Section. St .Bernard's stayed with the leaders byvirtue of their two point win over NorthOld Boys. A thirteen goal plus win byOrmond over A .J .A .X. enabled themto slip into the four while a seven goalwin over Old Melburnians has allowed;.iarcellin to now entertain a slim hopeof making the finals - they are certain-ly well clear of the relegation zone :though they must keep winning to main-tain either of these hopes .

Kew's tendency of the B Section num-ber one spot was short-lived, when theytrailed Monash Blues all day beforefinally being defeated by twenty-threepoints . Collegians re-asserted themselveswith a twenty point win over Fawknerin a very low-scoring game, whilst OldXaverians and Old Scotch Collegiansboth had percentage boosting wins .Other winner - in another low-scoringgame was Old Paradians, who seem tohave decided that they wish to stay inB Section for another year .

The Elsternwick Park match lastweek saw the C Section leader OldBrighton inflict Bulleen-Templestowe'sfifth consecutive defeat, the "luck of thedraw" has allowed B-T. to hang on tofourth as their nearest rivals - OldHaileyburians, St . Kevin's and M .H .S .Old Boys were all similarly dealt with .Nothing is straightforward in C Sectionas the fifth match saw Old Trinity Gram.defeat Old Camberwell Gram . - and

so re-open the relegation stakes inearnest.

State Bank moved in third spot be-hind Old Carey Gram . on percentagefollowing their narrow win over thesecond side in D Section last Saturday.St . Bede's were less fortunate as theycould only manage a draw againstninth-placed A .M .P . Society . That drawand their own defeat by Heathertonhas put country Colleges "in the hotseat" with regard to relegation now .Alphington dealt a crushing blow toBeverley Hills, the margin being overthirty goals .

In E Section the top four all recordedwins last week though none could beconsidered as really comfortable al-though three were against teams welldown the list . The biggest winning mar-gin in the Section was that of A .N.Z.Bank who over the past two weeks havemade a concerted effort to avoid slippingback to F Section next year .

Following last Saturday's results theF . Section four has taken on a "new"look with three first year sides (Thomas-town, Peninsula Q.B. and CoolarooRovers) occupying the placings behindUniversity Reds. Previous leaderThomastown led the Reds for threequarters last week but could not with-stand a determined last term by thehome side . Therry C .C .O .B ., and Foot-scray I.T.O .B. moved a little closer -with narrow wins whilst CommonwealthBank recorded a fifty point win in thei rgame against Banyule.

Congratulations to Old Iv anhoe champio nDave " Soapy" Purcell on playing 100 games."Soapy" has had a brilliant career winning theclub best and fairest award in 1973, 1975,1976 and 1978 and captaining the 1st XVIII in1976, 1977 and 1978.

He is a dynamic player who has theability to lift the side with his own efforts .He is also a fearless player who regularly winsthe hard ball and often throws himself acrossthe boot of an opposing player in an effort tostop a forward thrust. Well done to a trueV .A .F .A. champion .

RUCKMAN'S 100thGary Jone's M .H .S.O .B's young ruckman

played his 100th game for our club againstthe Hampton Rovers on 5th July. Garybegan his career in 1975 and has developedinto one of our most valued team memberswith his superb high marking and great athleticability his major assets. "Jonesie" still has anenormous amount of untapped ability whichin the season to come will ensure that hereaches championship status with Melb . High.

A fine club man and committee member aswell as our senior vice-captain, Gary hasreached the first major milestone in his careerand all at Melb . High hope that he will seethe high-flying number 7 for many moreyears - Congratulations Gary on your fineeffort .

150 AT TECH.Last Saturday's game against St. John'smarked the 150th appearance of Ian Murtey

for the F.I.T . senior team. "Murls" startedhis long service with the club back in 1966 andremains one of the few survivors of theMighties' last premiership side of 1968 stillplaying . Regarded highly by past and presentteam-mates for his ability to read the play,"Murls" continues to put in outstanding per-formances as a player belying his years illus-trating how much experience can mean whenthe ball is in your possession. All your pastand present team-mates wish you the bestfor your 150th "Murls" and look forwardto you playing your 200th during the Mighties'climb through the higher sections .

100 AT POWER HOUSE

Congratulations to Ray Sibraa who plays his100th game for Power House today againstOld Carey .

Ray commenced with the club in 1970 andhas played most of his football with theReserves on the half-back line.

He has a fine record winning the ReservesBest and Fairest Trophy on two occasions in1972 and 1975 .

Ray invariably misses several matches earlyin the season owing to cricket commitments atPrahran where he captains the Seconds.

Good luck today Ray and to the Reserveswho should notch up their fourth win in arow .

AJAX play host to St . Bernard's O .C . today.AJAX were again disappointing last week andnow have the distinct possibility of being "theather" team to go down to B Section . Thereams above them have cleared away by twoctames and they will really have to pull oneout today to stay in touch. St. Bernard'sagain had a good win last week and theconditions at present are suiting them. Onthe firm AJAX ground the game will not gonuite their way all the time, but their overallstrength will see them through to win well .

University Blacks meet Ormond at home thisafternoon . Uni . Blacks were beaten ratherwell last week by Blues and will be lookingto, improve today . Allanson, Parrett andChristie have shown the way but it will needa full team to topple "The Monds" today .Ormond came back with a solid win last weekand will certainly want to maintain thatv:inning way, which seems to have eluded themcver the past few weeks. If they are to makea concerted effort in the four, then a wintoday is a must. In a very close game, thewinner possibly moving right into the four,I will go for Ormond .

The match of the day, which may be theprelude to the grand final, is between De LaSalle O .C. and University Blues. De La gotback into business lost week, but on theirhome ground things may not be that easy.It is very heavy and they will be lookingforward to both Ruffolo and Murphy kickingaccurately . University Blues gave Blacks anobject lesson last week, in going and gettingthe ball . Today the opposition will be muchmore fierce and Blues will be looking to Yeo,Tyquin and Carey to stem the flow towardsgoals . In a most interesting and tight gameI will go for De La Salle to make it thesecond time they have beaten Blues in the80's .

Ivanhoe venture out to Bulleen to playMarcellin O .C . Marcellin again had a goodwin last week and have now won three outof their last four encounters . If they keeppushing forward then they may have achance at the four, but will not be able tolet this game today slip away. Ivanhoestruck the formidable De La Salle last weekand today I think Marcellin will have too muchto lose to let it out of their grasp. Marcellinto win.

North O .B. play Old Melburnians at hometoday. North, after a good win two weeksago, struck St . Bernard's last week . Northhave been most inconsistent but on theirhome ground should prove a handful for theO .M .'s . G . Carroll and Griffin have been play-ing well and they will be a worry to theC7.M .'s . The Old Melburnians may only be finalfour "pretenders". All the work has beenleft to Brown, Murray, Lester and Waddington ,

while the others coast . If a concerted effortis made by the rest then they could possiblywin, but I feel North will be too strong.North O .B . to win.

B SECTIONTwo-thirds of the season is over, and, as

Jim Fidge writes, the four seems settled.Interest does lie, however, in the order of thetop four, and conversely, who will berelegated .

Today sees Monash Blues visit Old Scotch .Victory is quite possible for either sidethrough skill . Monash have built up strength,but their failure to play consistently mustcause worry to Stuart Schneider. The Studentshave stars in McKenzie, Ludeman and CaptainOlds, to say nothing of big men Moore andAnderson, who contribute regularly . Upforward, Rodger and Bergin are proving re-liable goal scorers . The experience of OldScotch players and their ability to play wellunder pressure may well be telling factorstoday . No payer has contributed as much tothe Cardinals' cause this season as has TomMason, although Simon Tallent, Bedford andPolkinghorne are giving great service. Ander-son, Morgan, Letts and Duke are four playerswhose influence could prove vital today .Without any confidence I select Old Scotch .

What can I write about Old Paradians?When I select them they fail ; when I tipagainst them they win, and win well .Caulfield Grammarians, their visitors today,had nineteen points to spare in the May 3clash . The advent of heavy grounds has aidedParadians consistency as their strength hastriumphed . As the Edmund Rice Oval will beheavy today, the visitors could be all at seain the mud, and could be yearning for theirporous Albert Park Oval . Match-winners forParade could well be Chris. McCarthy, Vin.Considine and Sam Assetta. On the otherhand, the Paradians must nullify Griffiths,Cooney, Watson and Kanis, each of whom hascontributed for Caulfield consistently thisseason . Today the Old Paradians shouldvindicate my judgment and win.

The leaders, Collegians, play C .B .C . St. Kildaat Elsternwick Park . The Saints are now in therelegation zone and their defenders faceanother torrid afternoon . Last SaturdayHinrichs, Blakeley, Jennings and Kay all reso-lutely faced purposeful Parade pressure andcan expect no respite today. Coates and Whitecould outruck Balsillie and Cook to give theSaints first use of the ball . However, theCollegians' runners such as Hoyle, Wagstaff,Rice and Hibbins should be able to win theball and nullify any St. Kilda aerial suprem-acy . From what I have seen of the two sides,I believe Collegians will take the points .

clash today in the Pitcher Park mud. Condi-tions will not favour good football and theside able to be first to the ball shouldtriumph. Fawkner, despite their poor visitingrecord, should have enough skill to carry theday . Dar ryl Foley and "H" Busst should havean interesting duel with Bob Arnold aroundthe ground. Allan, McMahon and Flavel areall playing well for the Two Blues and can'tbe given any latitude today. Dennis Grovesmust alert his players to closely check ParksideCaptain Jones, Clarke and Ware to preventthem becoming match-winners . Parkside willhold a small winning margin at the finalsiren .

The final match for decision is at Kew,familiar territory indeed for many of the OldXaveriansS This game could be a preview ofthe Grand Final . The small ground will notsuit the Old Xaverians, but their height ad-vantage should offset Kew's close-checkingtactics . The Xaverians have deep talent, andMichael Green is having success exploiting it .Individual duels will be a highlight of thisgame . Ken Rowlands, for Kew, will be fullyoccuaied by the active Curtain . Roving duelswill be interesting as Vale and Adgemis battlewith the Zerbis . In the air the Xaverians willhave a distinct advantage, as Burne andNoonan will outreach Walker. The veteranSierakowski will be well matched by BruceSmith and Terry Hayes . Despite Kew's lapselast Saturday they will be full of endeavourto erase memories of their May 3 loss to OldXaverians . Overall skill should enable thevisitors to repeat this result today.

C SECTIO NWell, last week was certainly a case of going

from "chocolates to boiled lollies", but atleast I have stayed away from the woodenspoon position.

My spies provided valuable informationabout Coburg last week, but it was after thepublication deadline. Whether last week was a"flash in the pan" or not will be proved todaywhen they visit Bulleen-Templestowe, whohave now lost five in a row. Despite all ofthese losses the B-T's have retained their placein the four. I do not wish to appear to be' putting the boats in", but I am selectingCoburg to win because they have to avoidrelegation.

One could be excused if one thought thatSt. Kevin's O.B . had lost the real desire towin, as they appear to have thrown away theonportunity of entering the four in two outof the last three weeks. Even their juniorswere held to a draw by the St . Bernard's juniorreserves . despite a big victory in the firstround . M .H .S.O .B . kicked the game away lastweek against the Rovers . This should be thematch of the day, as both sides must win tokeen alive their chances of participating in thefinals. M.H .S . won the first encounter ontheir home ground, and I am selecting St.Kevin's to win at home today .

Hampton Rovers just scraped in last weekand no doubt will be keen to return to theirown territory . Old Camberwell Grammarianskept the relegation stakes alive by allowingTrinity to beat them on their own ground .On form one must select the Rovers .

Old Trinity Grammarians today welcomeGeelong, who thrashed Haileybury last weekby a mere 21 goals . While Trinity will notcause the visitors any trouble, they will cer-tainly not allow them to have a percentageboosting win .

Old Haileyburians certainly let their bubbleburst last week and today play host to topside Old Brighton Grammarians. Brighton de-feated the B-T's last week and can now boastthat they have beaten every side in theSection. While Haileybury will be out to makeamends, Brighton should have an easy victory.

D SECTIO NLast Saturday, A .M .P . Society and St . Bede's

O .C . fought out a thrilling draw, and StateBank finished too strongly for Old Carey towin by five points .

Today, State Bank are at home to Aiphing_ton, and after defeating Old Carey last week,they will be out to defeat their opponentsfor the second time this year . Alphingtondestroyed Beverley Hills last week, kickingthirty-one goals, but they have not played oneof the other top four sides for eight weeks,and they will find goals much harder to scoretoday . State Bank make the most of theirhome ground advantage, and Alphingtonstruggled to defeat A.M .P . two weeks agoon the adjoining oval at Albert Park. ThoughAlphington have great goal-scoring ability,I think that State Bank can suppress theiropponents enough to win today .

A .M .P . Society have shown top form thelast two weeks - a draw against St . Bede'sand a good effort against Alphingon to troublethe top side for three quarters. They are nowonly two premiership points behind the strugg-ling Country Colleges, and a win today couldsee them move out of the relegation zone .Their opponents, Heatherton, had a win overCountry Colleges last week, and this was theirsecond win in three weeks, so they too areshowing good form. Today at Albert Park,A .M .P . appears to be capable of winningthis hard-fought game .

St . Bede's O.C . received a shock last weekwhen they were held to a draw by A .M .P.Society. The two premiership points theymissed out on have cost them equal secondspot on the ladder . They will therefore bein a savage m"d when they meet bottomside, Beverley Hills, who copped a hiding fromAlphir.gton last week . The only thing thatBeverley Hills can look forward to is that thiswill be the last time this year that they willhave to play one of the too four sides . St .Bede's to win easily .

Old Carey Grammarians travel to AlbertPark to play Power House at Ross GregoryOval . They had a hard-fought game againstState Bank last week, but they found it was

Power House had an even duelwith Old Ivanhoe last week, but finally wentdown by two goals in a relatively high scoringgame. The previous week they scored a winover Heatherton, so their form is reasonable,but I do not think that they will be goodenough to defeat Old Carey today.

Country Colleges gave an inaccurateHeatherton an eighteen point lead at quarter-time lost week, and they trailed by thatmargin all day to record their third successiveloss. They must now be wondering how theyever beat State Bank a month ago . Theiropponents, Old Ivanhoe Grammarians, whowere in the doldrums a few weeks ago, havelifted themselves, and a win over Power Houselast week followed up the good form theyshowed against Old Carey the previous week .Country Colleges are due for a lift in form,and with the home ground advantage, arecapable of winning today, but they won't .

E SECTIONThere is no change in the four, and

Mentone, with a close win over Latrobe, moveinto fifth position vacated by last week'sdefeated North Brunswick .

A.N .Z . are making a valiant effort to getaway from the relegation area with a veryconvincing win last week over U .H .S .O.B .They play near neighbours this week on theirhome ground and depending how and whichway the wind blows, they could pressureElsternwick.

Mentone had a good win away from hometwo weeks ago against North Brunswick, butI don't think they can repeat this againstSt. Pius today .

Bulleen United did not disgrace themselvesagainst the top team, Elsternwick, last week,and this week at home will put a lot ofpressure on Old Geelong, who have been losingmatches away from Como .

Princes Hill lost the match against U .H .S.O .B.in the first round, and will be out to provethey are a better side at home.

North Brunswick badly need this matchto keep Thornbury away from the bottom ofthe four and to keep Mentone down the list .I think they have the determination to winthis home game .

La Trobe are a very unpredictable side thisyear, but at home to West Brunswick theymight just sneak in.

F SECTIONSt . John's O.C . v . Univ. Reds.

After such a good win over the hairy oneslast week, the Reds should have little diffi-culty in knocking over the Dandy Dashers,

although the latter were a bit stiff againstFootscray .Brunswick Y . Commonwealth, Bank .

Brunswick dropped out of the four and theBankers moved up a couple of places, so bothsides will face this game with some degreecan expect to find dislodging Coolaroo veryof confidence . Should Brunswick not win, theydifficult indeed, so they have to attack thisgame with all their vigour and skill or get outthe mothballs .Thomastown v, Peninsula O .B .

The heavy ones were done by a comfortablemargin last week and may be thankful forit . A good hard look at the reasons behindit and the last third of the season to attendto the problem . The P.O .B .'s didn't have muchdifficulty with Clayton, but can anticipate adifferent ball game against the heavy ones.Monash Whites v . Footscray I .T.

JUNIOR SECTION 1The heavy conditions that prevailed last

week did not stop the favoured teams fromtaking victories in some very interestinggames .

Ormond continued their good form andmoved closer to the Four, whilst De La Salle'sdefeat of North Old Boys enabled them totake their place in the top division of theladder. Melbourne University, St. Bernard'sand Old Haileyburians proved too strong fortheir rivals .

This week's round contains two matcheswhich have a direct bearing on the final hopesof four teams .

North Old Boys are at home to St. Bernard'sin a game which North Old Boys must win ifthey are to keep in contact with the top sides.They will be desperate to "knock off" the topteam in the Saints, who are fresh from amassive win over Ivanhoe. North Old Boys arealways a tough proposition at home and St .Bernard's will have to concentrate for the fullgame to take this one off .

Ormond meet Melbourne University and thiswill be a real test for the "Monds". Theyhave shown great form over the lost month

Melbourne University's forwardsare brilliant on their day, but Ormond has ahard, close-checking backline which will ensurethat every goal is hard won . I'm going forMelbourne University, confident in the know-ledge that Ormond will love to prove mewrong .

De La Salle visit Coburg and this game islikely to be a tight affair . Coburg's form hasbeen very patchy this year but they arecapable of upsetting the top teams on theCoburg ground . De La Salle's form away fromtheir own oval is not all that inspiring, andthey will need to be right on their form if theyare to take this one from the "Burgs".

Old Haileyburians versus Kew in a matchthat is likely to be a one-sided affair unlessthe Kew boys can get their act together. "OldHails" have their eyes on the top spot butknow they must keep going to hold on to thesecond place . I must select "Old Hails" to winthis one .

Ivanhoe take on Hampton Rovers at home .The Rovers have dropped a bit in form overthe Past few weeks but they must continueto har.g on in there if they are to keep theslim final hopes alive. The "Hoes" were over-powered in the heavy conditions by St .Bernard's lost week and must lift their gamefor the sake of their supporters . I fancyHampton Rovers will take the points in thisgame.

Of course, I find this hard to take, asI and my fellow Committee members wereunder the impression that Michael was devot-ing his complete and untiring efforts torunning our Club . Perhaps I'll have to puta bit more pressure on him at our nextmeeting .

Enough prattling on, and back to today'sgames.

The only game with any bearing on thefour is the clash out at Fawkner, where thehome side take on Monash'. The winner willmove a game clear in the four. PerhapsFawkner will be a little too desperate in qtight one .

Buiteen-Tempiestowe should return to thewinning list at the expense of M .H .S .O .B .

Old Paradians should enjoy the return toYarra Park with a good win over Old Scotch.

Marceliin have displayed very ordinary formof late, but today they should get the badlyneeded four points over West Brunswick .

Therry gave Bulleen-Templestowe a nice fixlast week, so they should have little troublewith Caulfield Grammarians at home .

A win today could place Old Brighton backin the four, and they will be keen to notchtheir second victory against Parkside. Re-turning to their own ground should furtherassist Old Brighton's endeavours .

At their first meetnig, Heatherton trouncedSt. Bernard's (B), but the gap between thetwo now seems to have narrowed . Heathertonmust win today if they are to entertain hopesof a prolonged season, and this should makethem the more desperate side .

St. Pius will be too good for a strugglingClayton - particularly at De Winton Park .

George 'Digger', `Disco' Swami' Corredigplays his 50th game today for S.K .O.B . Georgehas played most of his games at centrehalf-back for the club .
